Can anyone help me decipher these Unix install instructions for Maya 7.0?

i have these (to me) cryptic lines of code:
#!/bin/sh
if test `whoami` != "root" ; then
echo ""
echo "error: must be root to run install_licenses."
echo ""
exit 1
fi
cd "`dirname "$0"`" && ./findkey -i prekey.dat
accompanied by a Unix exec file called findkey and another folder called prekey.dat. frankly i'm not sure what this operation will do, but it seems to need to be done before the actual install process.
MacBook Pro 2.0/2GB/100GB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   also own Powerbook G4 1.67/1GB/100GB

it's me again--did you lose the first line of your message concerning "#!/bin/sh" ? Thanks again.
the line below is just a check to make sure that the
root user is the one
that is running this script.
"if test `whoami` != "root" ; then"
if not, "!=" means "not equal to", exit the script
and print the message.
the line
"cd "`dirname "$0"`" "
changes to the directory where the script is,
hopfully, if no path is given, is just assumes the
current working directory.
And finally, if the script was able to change
directory sucessfully. then the script runs the
command " ./findkey -i prekey.dat". Which does what
ever it does (it's appears to be specific to maya).
