Can Automator be used to generate iCal backups?

I would like to use Automator to run iCal's backup utility - namely File > Back up iCal....
Has anyone done this? It seems like this should be fairly straightforward but I'm not seeing how this can be done from within Automator. TIA!

Couldn't figure out how to do in Automator but I took a crack at writing an Applescript that works.
This saves the iCal backup in your home folder and overwrites the previous copy. You'll need to create the first one yourself and then the script will work.
Here is the script:
tell application "iCal" to activate
delay 2
tell application "System Events"
tell menu item "Back up iCal…" of menu "File" of menu bar 1 of application process "iCal" to click
delay 3
keystroke "iCal Backup"
keystroke "H" using command down
delay 3
keystroke return
delay 2
keystroke tab
keystroke space
end tell

I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:

That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.

No. It is intended for use in local networks.

  • Can iCloud be used like a carbonite backup?

I'm new to Mac. Bought an iMac and am wondering if iCloud should be or can be used like an offsite backup like Carbonite?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iCloud can be used to back up iOS devices for purposes of performing a complete restore, however iCloud is primarily a sync service and shouldn't be used to back up your mac.

  • Can APEX_ITEM be used to generate a Form page?

    Hi,
I would like to use APEX_ITEM to generate in APEX 4.0 a Form region at runtime, based on some meta tables that describe the columns, labels, datatypes etc..
It seems that people use APEX_ITEM for generating updatable tabular form and I start to question my original concept. I created a PL/SQL Anonymous block region, that contains the following code segment:
    htp.p(
    APEX_ITEM.SELECT_LIST (
    3,
    'Y',
    'Yes;Y,No;N',
    'Y',
    'readonly=readonly',
    'P1_MARRIED',
    'Married'
When I run my form and click my 'Session' link at the botom of the page, the P1_MARRIED item would not show up in the item list of the page. Am I missing something or this 'Generate a Form region at runtime' concept is based on my missunderstanding of APEX_ITEM API?
    Regards, Tamas

    Thanks, that was enlightening!
So if I understand it well, it means that:
1.) I have to give my region 'Form like' layout by using htp.p appropriately. Yes. A custom named column report template is another useful approach.
2.) What concerns the update processing, it means I should handle the region as a 1-record report i.e. using Fxx arrays but always referencing the first member of each Fxx array only: APEX_APPLICATION.G_Fxx (1)Yes, unless there are actually any 1:M elements (home, work, and mobile phone numbers/email addresses for example), where the same type of element is repeated. (This might also help with point 3...)
Note also that disabled items are not submitted, and only checked checkboxes are submitted
3.) I am OK, provided that I generate maximum 50 items on a page, since 50 is a hard-coded limit that can not be gotten around. (I will have to work out solution for this, since i have 53 columns in the given table)Dividing the form into several wizard-style pages as used in the APEX Application Builder is probably the best solution to this. It enables you to keep the sub-form pages simple, clean and short, so users don't have to scroll up and down. Save the submitted values from each sub-form page in APEX collections, and display a final report based on the collection(s) for the user to review before saving the information to the database table.
Alternatively, some of these columns might be common across all the form permutations, and implementable using standard page items.

  • The system requirements for Mavericks used years of production for the computer requirements.  Why can't they use the generational number system?

Office location where Mac Pro is located has a slow internet connection.  I downloaded Mavericks installer onto thumbdrive.  Attempted to install on a dual 3 core Xenon Mac Pro, model 2,1.  After a few hours, I figured out that the error message that was generated by the installer was telling me that my computer doesn't support Mavericks.  Do other people get confused with which generation of hardware is supported with software?  I understand the difference between PowerPC and Intel.  The tricky part is the difference between 32bit and 64bit with the EFI and the CPU instruction set.  Also, why can't they stick with a clear numbering system that is visible when you get info on the Mac?

If you are desperate you can use hackintosh tools to boot in 'legacy' mode which allows 10.9 to run on unsupported Macs. Chameleon bootloader & some google fu will get it running in an unsupported way (assuming your graphics card is supported).
I think Apple dug this hole when they told everyone that these were '64bit Macs'. Sadly if they don't support 32bit EFI in their new OS it's not going to work by default. In other discussions I have read that drivers need to be rewritten for actual 64bit support on a 32bit EFI.
I have run 10.8 on my 1,1 MP, but 10.6 was nicer, at some point I'll try 10.9 on it
P.S. http://mactracker.ca and http://www.everymac.com are handy for working out what model supports what features etc.

  • Can you resume using a Time Machine backup?

    Hi everyone,
I recently migrated to a new MBP using Migration Assistant but now Time Machine wants to do a full backup of the new system. I don't have enough room on the external hard disk I use - how do I get TM to resume updaing the existing backup?
The external disk is a WD MyBookWorld which has a separate area for TM backups so I can't see any files in Finder.
As far as I know I named the new MBP the same as the old MBP...
    Thanks

If you transferred you data from the WD MyBookWorld HDD, your 'new' MBP should have no more user data than before.  It should not be able to exceed its (the WD) current capacity.  (Am I missing something here?)
If your 'new' MBP had a HDD with a capacity greater that the WD MyBookWorld HDD,  then you should get a HDD with a capacity equal to or greater than the internal drive in your MBP.  Otherwise it is simply a matter of time before you exceed the capacity of the Time Machine HDD.
Though you have named the new HDD the same as the old one, Time machine looks at the 'name' in SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE>SERIAL-ATA.  That will be different than your old HDD>
    Ciao.

  • T500 - HDD for Ultrabay - can it be used for Recovery Media & Backups & Page File & data?

I'm learning to check first before buying things.
I am considering getting a generic ultrabay SATA adapter
    http://cgi.ebay.com/SATA-adapter-IBM-THINKPAD-43N3412-R400-W500-X200S-R500-/130441260492
    and a WD 7,200 HDD
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136278
Can the ultrabay HDD be used for Recovery Media, and also Backups, page file, and other data?
And can the Backups on this HDD be deleted, so only the last backup is present?
Also, is it possible to use a HDD in the ultrabay slot, without an adpater?  My T500 is a desktop replacement currently, so the HDD wouldn't need to be protected from movement or bumps.
    Thanks for any ideas

For all of you who know less than I do,  a HDD in the ultrabay slot can be used as a Recovery boot, and for the R&R backups.
These must both be put on the primary partition of the HDD.
I believe, but can't test or confirm, that another partition (logical partition) could be added to the drive and used for page filing and data.

  • If I set up secure shared disks with accounts, can i still use the time machine backup feature.

I was setting up an account on the time capsule so I can have other people have their own private folder. My question is, Can I still back up my data on my time capsule by using time machine?

Sorry the account feature is irrelevant.. You do not want to use it.. you can migrate your data to your computer.. The account feature is not needed, required, useful or anything to do with restoring your files..
You use account access to stop everybody being able to see your files.. the problem is.. it is not itself secure.. so if i get hold of your TC I can delete your accounts with a soft reset and access all your files.. so it is useless.. don't bother using it.. ignore it.. !!
If you wish to have secure backups use the Time Machine Encrypt backup feature.

  • Can Automation be used to send User-defined CC's to Environment objects?

Hi, this is probably a really dumb question but I'll ask it anyway:
I've bought a controller-environment for a synth (Alphajuno2, PG300 programmer) for Logic, the faders in the environment layer use sysex to communicate with the synth.
Apparently it is possible to map an external midi-controller to these environment-faders, and that's all and fine, but what I'm after is a method of using automation to control the environment-faders. How would I go about doing it?
I've only ever really automated some volume changes or plugin parameter changes, I've not yet automated faders in the environment, so how would I go about doing it?
Would I create a fader which I'd link to the sysex-sending fader, and automate the fader, or maybe an environment-monitor (and add it to the arranger) and somehow configure a set of CC#'s to be automated with that arranger object, and then just cable them up to the various Sysex-sending faders (I do know enough to be able to set the input of those sysex-faders to match the CC#'s which the automation would be sending).
Is this kind of "User-defined CC#'s in Automation" possible? How should I go about it?
Message was edited by: esaruoho to further clarify it

Is it just because there is currently no way whatsoever of Automation CC, and I should have known to use Hyper Draw to talk to an Environment object directly, which would then be connected to the Faders of choice?

  • I can not remember my passcode and do not have icloud installed, can i still use my laptop to backup up my files before resetting my phone?

  • Can ARD be used to generate a software inventory?

I need to be able to generate a list of all installed apps on each Mac for inventory purposes. Can ARD do this?

Yes. You can do a file search for Kind is Application (if I'm remembering the phrasing correctly; I'm not in front of an ARD 2.x admin station at the moment) and you'll get a list of all the apps. You'll get some "chaff" - AppleScript applets and such - but it's not hard to weed those out.

  • Can Automator be used to make movie screencaptures?

Even though I've had a MacBook Pro for over a year, I've only recently discovered that I have Automator on it and what it can do. I noticed that there is a "New Video Capture" option and I was wondering if this option is the equivalent of making movie screen captures?
If it is, can someone forward me to a quick tutorial?
    Thanks in advance

    No.
A quick glance at the options for iPhoto in Automator shows no options for exporting.
That's not your only hope, of course, and an app like Keyboard Maestro should certainly be able to create such a workflow triggered by a keystorke or event - like completing an import.

KM is a complex and very powerful app. You'll need to read the help on it.

How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use  time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

    So what is your question?
If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
