Can I copy all my programs on an external drive to run?

I have a 80GB internal drive & I want to run bootcamp to install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
My Question Is: Can just cut and paste all my programs to an external hard drive to free up space and they will still run? If not is there a way to move them off the internal drive where they will still work? I bought this MacBook laptop used, so I don't have the original install disc's for many programs I can't afford to buy.
Thank You for your help!

Copying and pasting applications in a fair number of cases may fail because by copying you're typically resetting the permissions of files to system defaults (i.e. non-root) which may cause the app to malfunciton. Also, during updates some apps will also expect to see the application in a specific location. It's not true for all apps, but it probably just enough to make life really irritating.
Depending on how involved you want to get you could do the following:
Create a symbolic link from the external HD to /Applications after moving the contents of /Applications using ditto.
Create a symbolic link from the external HD to /Applications after moving the contents of /Applications using rsync 3 (not the rsync that comes with OS X)
Both ditto and rsync 3 will preserve permissions, resource forks, attributes, etc etc and the symbolic link would be set up to "redirect" from the external HD to the Applications folder. I've done this several times with development directories and even XCode and it works great, but you need to know what you're doing. Cloning tools like Phoenix, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDuper all make use of these commands - that's how they work.
If you're up to doing a little command line work and you're familiar with what I'm talking about, items 1 or 2 above may be an option. Otherwiise you might want to pay attention to the input the previous posters provided since their points are all valid.

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Can't copy/paste 2+GB vids to external drive.

I've got some videos on my iMac which are up to 11GB in size and I'd like to move them off of this comp in order to reclaim some space but when I try to copy/paste files that are about 2 or more GB in size to an external drive via USB it stops and gives me an "Error code 0". Smaller files have no problem pasting, just the heavy weight ones do. Anyone know what's wrong..??

is it Fat32? remember 4GB file size limit.
if not than, do the suggested by draggign them, as copy&paste method isnt the most secure and best way to transfer files.
the data cache of something that large may not have enough time to copy every file, so dragging simply buffers the process and creates that cache as it goes so all the files get accounted for and transferred.
    goodluck.

  • How can I copy only some music to an external drive to free up space on my lenovo laptop?

I have a lenovo laptop and almost ne space left on my computer. How do move the library to an external drive?
As a separate question, there are several folders labelled "old I tunes library"  What are these?

In one line you say "some music" but then you ask about moving the library which is a big single parcel.  Moving the whole library is easy.  Moving just some media is not so easy and can cause complications in the future unless you are really familiar with how iTunes operates.
To move the whole library you copy your iTunes folder and everything it contains to the other drive.  Start iTunes while holding down the shift key, then guide it to the library location on the external.
To move just some things is more complicated and I am not sure of the best method with new iTunes versions (I run an old one), nor of the key combinations on a PC. You posted in the iTunes for Mac forum and I'll request this be moved to iTunes for Windows.

  • How can I boot my (OS Lion) Macbook (using external drive) to run Leopard

I have recently installed Lion on my macbook. Previously, I had Snow Leopard.  During that time, I used an external hard drive to boot into Leopard to run some programs that didn't run on SL (Spring Cleaning, for example).
Today is the first time I tried to boot from the hard drive with Leopard on it since upgrading to Lion. Hitting Option during startup doesn't even show the external drive, and using the System Preferences/ Startup Disk method is equally useless.
I like Lion and don't feel like doing a total re-install just to have occasional access to an older OS, but I'd sure like to have it all!
      Any ideas for a workaround?

Verify that your external drive was formatted as GUID, it won't be bootable otherwise.

  • Can´t copy a 60 GB file to external drive

I´ve tried several times to copy a single iMovie MOV-file with 60 GB to an NAS-Server via LAN, no success. Finder is aborting.
Same with an external USB drive?
Even under Parallels with WinXP and Win-Explorer.
    Any ideas?
    Thx

Is WinXP able to read this format?
Not without software such as MacDrive.
I can't identify the format of my Synology Diskstation 209.
The format of a network drive can't be directly determined from a device other than the one it's directly connected to. As long as that device is able to read the drive, the capabilities of the other computers on the network don't matter.

  • Is there a way to install Windows (with programs) on an external drive and run it from the Pro?

I have a 1TB Seagate Goflex that I am using to backup the Mac, but I want to partition it and run Windows and Windows Apps from it, rather than risk my HDD.  Does anyone have any experience doing that or have any ideas on how it might be done?  I am willing to risk the Seagate external drive, but not the laptop.

    Bob,
you could put a virtualizer such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop on the external drive, and install Windows and Windows apps in the virtualizer.

  • Can I keep all my apps on an external hard drive?

My MacBook Air has 64GB of flash storage and I recently purchased a 500GB G-Drive external hard drive.  I was hoping to free up the installed flash drive since I show about 19GB of Apps on it.  It won't go over and now Time Machine is not backing up all my photos and music to the external.  I figured I paid for them, I should be able to save them as I see fit and not have them stuck on my flash drive.  What gives?

Your problem(s) could be caused by a number of different issues. I suspect that the reason you can't copy the applications over to your external drive is a permission's problem. I selected my external drive and then chose File>Get Info from the menu. You should do the same.
The above is what I see after the GetInfo. I clicked on all the triangles to make the picture smaller because what I want to point out is at the bottom. In the bottom right hand corner is a lock. I clicked that and then typed in my password. Then in the bottom left is the Ignore ownership on this volume checkmark. I clicked on it so ownership is ignored. This lets me put files on the drive reguardless of who owns the files. I suspect your external drive doesn't have this option checkmarked.
Now, having fixed this problem (I hope) I urge you to be very careful about putting applications there. I have two hard fast rules: 1) never move any program when it comes with an installer and 2) never move any program I buy from the App Store. The reason is simple: when these programs receive updates the programs are expected to be where they were originally placed and the updater doesn't look for them. Consequently your programs aren't updated and sometimes odd 'gifts' are placed in your Applications folder.
However, many programs come in DMG packages and you drag them to your applications folder to install them. These can be safely moved anywhere you'd like to. Usually, but not always. Even with these programs, some have dumb updaters that won't work properly and some mysteriously stop working if you move them.
It is best to move data not applications. Movies (and other video), music, and photos are the best choices since they tend to be large files.
You also indicated that TimeMachine isn't backing up all your photos and music any longer. Are the files all in one place? In other words, is the music being backed up and the music not being backed up all on the same hard drive? I have a suspician they aren't but I want to confirm that first.

  • I can't copy iTunes media files from one external hard drive to another.

Hi, I am running the latest iTunes and Mavericks software on my MacBook Pro. My iTunes library is stored on an external Seagate 2tb hard drive and it is almost full. I want to transfer the files to a WD Elements 3tb external hard drive and have made that new volume the destination folder for my iTunes library. However, even though I have enabled read/write on both volumes and made the iTunes media folders on both shared folders, I can't copy all the files from the Seagate drive to the WD drive. It comes up with an error message that says "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8058)". I can transfer files from my MacBook hard drive to the new volume, but can't copy files from the old Seagate volume to my MacBook hard drive; it makes the "boing" sound that indicates it is copying but nothing transfers. Files that won't copy include all music files, some video files and all podcast files. Some transferred with no problem. Any ideas out there?

Hi Limnos, thanks very much for your reply.
both external drives came preformatted for Windows but I erased each and reformatted them for Mac before using them.
i made the destination folder on the new WD drive the new iTunes folder using Advanced preferences in iTunes.
my original iTunes folder on the first drive contained all my iTunes files, as that, also, was the destination folder that was linked via Advanced preferences.
If I download new content now with the new drive attached, iTunes has no trouble finding where to place the files.
in Preferences I have both boxes checked (copy files" and "organize") that deal with copying iTunes files.
When  I first attempted to copy all iTunes files from one media folder to the other on the external drives, I just did a drag and drop of the whole iTunes media folder from one to the other while both were mounted on my desktop. It started copying immediately with no problems, but as it progressed it started skipping files, each time displaying the error message I reported earlier. that included my entire Music folder. When I open, for example, a season folder that contains files that would not copy, eg, Modern Family Season 5, the episodes that won't copy are there and visible but any attempt to drag and drop them into the correct folder on the new drive results in the error message. There is no pattern to it; it will choose some episodes from some seasons but not others, and no music at all.
when I look at the "missing" files in  iTunes they have the small exclamation mark that indicates the file is missing, but when I locate it through iTunes it doesn't copy the file on the old external drive to the new one. It just plays it having found the file on the old drive.
originally I had to make the iTunes folder on the old drive into a shared folder using the Get info window after either a software upgrade or an OS upgrade (I can't remember which, it was several years ago). For some reason the upgrade changed the preferences of that folder to a Read Only folder and after researching the problem found the only way to keep using the drive was to make the folder a shared one. I can't remember why and I apologise for that but it was a long time ago.; I can tell you that at the time it was necessary.
thanks again for your time; I have a good working knowledge of iTunes and Macs in general so I truly believe I have done everything according to how it should be done,, but clearly I've done something wrong!

You can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner.  It will clone your HD to the external.  The format is the same as your internal drive and you can boot from it using Option key at boot time.

How can I copy all the comments from my picture/s in fotostream to my picture/s in my library?

Hi, first, you should prevent the iTunes library auto sync with iPhone: Launch iTunes > click Preferences... > click Devices. In the window, check the option 'Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically'. Next, connect your iPhone with your computer via the USB cable. Click the mini menu for iTunes on the very top left and click the option 'Show menu bar'. After then you can see iTunes File, Edit, View, Control, Store and Help menus on the ribbon. Click File > Devices > Transfer purchases from (your iPhone name). You can also access to the File menu by holding down Alt (Option on Mac), Shift and F keys. This is how to get your iPhone purcahsed song transferred to iTunes Library.

You can do that in FCPX too, as all the things you cited are listed separately in the inspector.
Here's a little gotcha. Let's say you've color corrected a few clips and you've applied an effect to one and want to paste it the other clips. You switch off color correction and copy the clip. You select the other clips and paste effects. What do you think happens? The effect is applied, but the color correction is applied as well, only it's switched off as it was in the first clip, so all the color correction on the other clips is lost. Fun, eh?
I'll try to replicate your gotcha - but no, that doesn't sound like fun at all!

  • Can't copy all songs from an imported CD

I have an OLD 15gb iPod. I bought a new CD and successfully imported all the songs into iTunes (V.7). I then selected all songs and dragged them to my iPod. However, only some of the songs copied. I cannot even drag some of them one-by-one to my iPod from iTunes.
I cannot figure out why I can't copy all the songs.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I never laughed in all my life. Here I was, inserting the cd Dance with Me, thinking it's not going to copy the whole thing. yeah, right.
Sure, it prompted me, Do I want to replace the songs, so of course I said "no, don't replace the songs". and guess what it did. It copied the whole cd (at least I got my two songs).
I went into the itunes library, and sure enough, all the songs were there twice. So what did my intelligent brain think of? I just unchecked the doubled songs and stuck my ipod into my computer and it synched up and I got what I wanted.
Now what did I do wrong when it prompted me. I clicked on "don't replace" and it replaced them anyway.
Am I dumb? or is itunes stupid?
    thanks, Melody
