Can I determine datatype of a control from it's reference??

that's pretty much the question...
for example. if I'm using an dynamic event structure, and an event fires.... I'd like to use the control ref that is given in the event structure to determine what type of control (numeric, boolean, array, etc.) changed...
is this possible...
more simply, if I have a reference to a control, can I determine it's type?
thanks
-z

Thank you Darren,
I should be more specific. Is there any way to accomplish what I will describe below?
I have an event structure fire on an dynamic event. The eventData node (on the left of the structure) has several outputs including "CtlRef" and "NewVal". For a dynamic event, the data is of type varient and must be cast into the proper type using the "Varient to Data" function. Unfortunately, this requires that I put a constant in the code that is equivalent to the actual data type and wire it to the "Varient to Data" function.... What I would prefer is to somehow use the "CtlRef" value and wire that into the top of the "Varient to Data" function in order to properly cast the data.
ideas?
thanks

• How can i change my home itunes control from my pc to my ipad

I am in the process of moving all my files from my PC to storage devices and cloud in order to make my new iPad my primary device for everything. No more PC. one problem I'm trying to solve is that I can access my itunes setting acct. info on my laptop, but not my iPad. How do I make my iPad the primary iTunes device?

Never mind, I figured it out. Like most things to do with Apple I'm finding, there is an easy solution. I was able to go to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign In> and access the personal info.

• Is there a way I can configure LV To pick user controls from a different folder

than user.lib folder under C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW
6.1\
I hate putting my own code where the application software is installed.
Makes it tough to manage in IMHO.
I see that \* is used under Options->VI Paths, so if I can just
modify this userlib environment variable, I should be good to go, but
haven't figured out how to do it.

LabVIEW is much more flexible than most people think. You can configure any folder to show up as a sub-palette of the controls pallette. Just edit the palette. See chapter 3 of the LabVIEW User Manual. You can insert a sub-palette and like it to a directory. That sounds like what you want.

• How can I determine the device number from the task ID

I'm using 'Port Config' to initialize my DIO port for a NI-DAQ 6052E. Port Config returns a task id and it would be very useful if I could determine what device number I have based on the task id.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments.
It is not possible to determine the device number programmatically from the task id. This would be slightly redundant since you must supply a device number when you Port Config executes. You could simply create a local variable of the Device Number control that is connected to the Port Config.vi if you need to use the device number elsewhere in your VI. Simply right-click on the Device number control and select Create >> Local Variable. Then right click on the local variable and select change to read. This will allow you to read the value of the device number you provided anywhere in your VI.
If you would rather determine the actual device that is being used rather than the device number, yo
u can use the Get DAQ Device Info.vi. I have attached a simple example program that demonstrates how to use the VI.

• How can I determine which computer a share is connected to in /Volumes from terminal or a script?

I run a set of virtual machines via Fusion on an iMac that we run automated tests on for our website. There is a folder on each VM called /Automation that is shared.
I have a python script that runs on the host, that will find an open VM, start it up and then mount the VM's /Automation folder. So if there is only 1 VM powered on, the folder shows up in /Volumes as /Volumes/Automation. The problem is when there are 2 or more VM's powered on, because then the shares start being named /Volumes/Automation-1 and Automation-2 etc. So my question is, how can I determine which computer each share belongs to from terminal or a script?
In other words, I'm looking for something like:
/Volumes/Automation = "FirstVirtualMachineName.local"
/Volumes/Automation-1 = "SecondVirtualMachineName.local"
Is there any way to determine which computer a mounted share is connected to? In the past, I've just unmounted all /Automation folders, and then mounted them in a particular order, but that's unreliable and messy in my opinion. If anyone knows a better way, please let me know. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Well I think I have a workable solution. It's not perfect, but I think it will do the trick. I can put a spotlight comment on the folder similar to 'HostName=OSX-Automation-1.local' and can then retrieve that value from our server with the following python snippet:
import subprocess
out,err = subprocess.Popen(['osascript','-e','tell application \"Finder\" to get comment of \"Macintosh HD:Volumes:Automation-1\"'],stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE).communciate()
So I could just loop through each 'Automation*' folder in /Volumes and grab the name from the spotlight attributes on the directories. I don't think I really need to worry about the comments being overwritten, but I may have one of our launch daemons that run on the VM check that spotlight comment once a minute or something to ensure that the correct value is there.
If it ends up not working well in practice, I'm going to give your suggestion about a config script a shot. It would require a little more up front work, but seems as if it would be pretty solid after that.
Thanks again for helping me think it through

• Can the position and szing of a control element in a View be controlled from the ViewModel?

Is it possible to change the position of a control, say a label, as a response to some action/operation from the ViewModel? Like if one response to something is true then place the label in the top left corner. If false, place the label
in the lower right corner. I realize you could have a label in each position and just set the visibility. But can the position and sizing of said label be controlled from the View Model? What would be a sample coding of this? would
it be in the xaml or combination of a method in the ViewModel and the xaml?
Rich P

First off Rich, say TextBlock to yourself ten times.
Use a TextBlock rather than a label.
There are a bunch of different ways to do this and the easiest is to have two controls whose text is bound to the one property.
Bind the Visibility of each to another 2 properties in the viewmodel.
Collapse one and Visible the other.
The reason for that is that it's easier.
Technically, you could put one textblock in a grid and use margin to control this. You could animate x y co-ordinates and move the textblock mysteriously across the window if you put your mind to it.
Or you could put it in a row/column "cell" of a grid and change which cell it goes in - but that would involve some mechanism like messaging from the viewmodel to the view and is not really ideal if you can avoid it.
I'd have a pair of textblocks, here's one:
<TextBlock Name="TopLeftMsg"
Text="{Binding Msg}"
Visiblity="{Binding TopLeftVis}"
Both would bind to a public string property msg in the viewmodel.
They each get their own public visibility property and that'd be switched between Visibility.Visible and Visibility.Collapsed.
Sizing of textblocks is best fitted to content because all you see is the text.
Textboxes are arguably different because you can see the things.
Hope that helps.

• How can I determine what LLB a VI is being loaded from?

I've been frustrated switching between versions when an application opens and suddenly can not find a VI which is being loaded from a LLB. How can I determine what LLB (or other type of library) a VI is being loaded from ?
Is there a list of all libraries along with what VIs are included in them somewhere?

• Can i place controls from the properties dialog of an express vi on the front panel?

I'm using the spectral measurements express vi in my vi and I'd like to put the "window" and "number of averages" controls from the properties dialog on the front panel. However, there are not outputs on the express vi icon for these parameters. Can I place controls for these on the front panel somehow or do I always have to go into the block diagram and open the properties dialog to change the values?

The way to do this is to right click on the express VI and select Open Front Panel. This will convert it to a standard subVI. then go into the subVI and replace the Spectrum Averaging and Spectrum Window constants to front panel controls by right click on them. Right click the icon and select Show Connector. Wire the new controls to a free terminal on the connector. You may have to add additional terminals if there aren't any available to wire to the new controls.

The problem seems to be related to a custom object that I am passing to the exposed
clientRequest(String, CustomObj) method in the process control. If I remove the
CustomObj parameter, all works fine. Unfortunately, I need to pass that object
to the workflow. I have the CustomObj define within my project "Project/com/omeninc/package/CustomObj",
my process file located at "Project/processes/customerNeed/SubmitNeed.jpd" and
my pageflow define at "Project/pageFlows/customerNeed/customerNeedController.jpf".
The entire project builds without error, but when I run it I get the ClassCastException.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

I create a simple pageflow that invokes a process control (jpd file)
to start a
business process. I created a process control from the jpd and added
it as a control
to the pageflow. I can run the process indepedently in the test harness,
but cannot
invoke from my pageflow.
Any ideas what what could be wrong?
When I invoke a method on the process control I get the following in
the test
browser:
