Can I embed a font?

Hey all:
New web designer here: what's the latest, greatest trick for
embedding obscure fonts into a page? Or is there a practical way to
do this? I want to use all these beautiful and distinctive fonts,
but I also want to be sure my page shows up correctly in any
browser, on any system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas!

Images. Use 'em sparingly, though.

  • Can I embed OpenType fonts in Flash CS 5.5?

    I just reopened an old-ish Flash project and the fonts aren't working. The project was worked on previously in CS 3 or 4 - don't recall - on a Mac running some earlier version of OS X. I'm currently running Lion and Flash CS 5.5, and some of the fonts aren't embedding or rendering. The project is using Postscript fonts.
    I thought I read that TrueType fonts are more reliable, but the font I need (Akzidenz Grotesk) is not available in TrueType, only OpenType.
    Am I safe to buy and use this in OpenType format? It's several hundred dollars so want to be sure before blowing the money. I think I'm looking at this version, which seems to be the smallest/cheapest I can get away with: http://www.linotype.com/265010/AkzidenzGroteskStdValuePack-product.html
    Thanks!

    Thanks. I'm actually using the Font Embedding panel in Flash. Seems to be working though I can't get any of the variations to work.
    I create a new font in the Font Embedding panel, choose my font and weight (trying Myriad Pro and Myriad Pro Italic), export for actionscript (AS classes fontNormal1 and fontItalic1).
    Then in the class where I do my formatting, up top I have:
    private var fontNormalFont1:String = 'Myriad Pro';
    private var fontItalicFont1:String = 'Myriad Pro Italic';
    In my constructor I have:
    Font.registerFont(fontNormal1);
    Font.registerFont(fontItalic1);
    Then I create my text format:
    fmtMainTitle:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    fmtMainTitle.color = 0xffffff;
    fmtMainTitle.font = fontNormalFont1;
    fmtMainTitle.size = 18;
    Which I subsequently apply to text fields (including an embed font directive). It works great if my font is fontNormalFont1, but if I try fontItalicFont1 it comes up blank - no text appears.
    I tried creating an instance of the AS class for the italic font, and getting the font name:
    fontItalicInst:Font = new fontItalic1();
    trace(fontItalicInst.fontName);
    And I get back "Myriad Pro" - in other words it's only returning the base font name, not the full name.
    I'm pretty rusty at AS/Flash, and fonts were never my strong suit, so I could be doing all the the wrong way. I do need to have fonts available in CSS, which could be why I'm registering the fonts (it's been a few years since I built this app).
    Would appreciate any advice

  • Embed a font in one SWF use in another?

    Long version:
    I've got a "player" app that I've built that shows content
    from various XML files. I have certain common fonts embedded in it
    (Verdana, Arial, Times, etc.) that it uses to display text. Now,
    I've got a client with a special symbol font that I'll need to pull
    characters from to show specific text in my app. I can't embed this
    font in my app (due to many considerations), but I'd like to use it
    without having to use each character as a graphic (by converting
    every character in the font into a JPG). So, can I embed his font
    in a SWF and load that SWF to use the font in my app?
    Short version:
    SWF1 loads SWF2 which contains an embedded font. SWF1 uses
    that font via a TextFormant instance to show text on the stage.
    Is this possible? My target is Flash 7 player using AS2.
    Thanks!
    Matt

    that approach won't work i don't think. i've looked at shared
    libs before and don't remember it being that useful. but i'll take
    another look.
    is there now way in pure code to do it?

  • Can 6i Embed Fonts in PDF?

    Is it possible to embed fonts into the PDF outputs created with reports 6i? If so, where is there information on how to do this for 6i?
    Thanks,
    Kurz

    As you say, you cannot generate a PDF directly with the embedded font, but I discovered a trick:
    Use the IX library config file to embed the font in the postscript output when reports runs, then convert the postscript into PDF with an embed fonts parameter to ps2pdf or ghostscript:
    ps2pdf -dEmbedAllFonts=true reports_output.ps
    This will create a PDF with the embeded font, and with the IX library, you can use TTF fonts.
    Can this command be executed somehow automatically by pasta or IX after the report finishes?

  • Can I embed fonts in exported Word docs in 09

    No, not in a Word document. If you export to PDF fonts will be embedded.

  • How do I embed multiple font outlines in dynamic text field

    Can anyone tell me how I can embed multiple font outlines in
    Flash MX so I can get smooth text in a dynamic
    text frame? I want to use Regular, bold and italic in various
    parts of the text.
    I was using the Character button in the properties manager
    and tried to include all Characters. That does not work.
    In the Properties manager I can choose Bold and/or Italic.
    But it becomes a universal setting that overrides my HTML tags in
    my external txt file that I am importing. I dont want all my text
    to be bold.
    If I dont select them in the properties, however, Flash will
    not embed the font that it needs.
    Is there a different way to embed fonts other than under the
    Character Tab?
    I tried to import fonts to the library, but can not select
    them.
    Your help would really be appreciated.

  • Can i use a font such as Yuppy, Chalkboard which is basically included in iOS  for commercial purpose?

    hi!
    I make a e-book and it will be published on appstore and android market as application.
    I'm wondering about font.
    Can i use a font such as Yuppy, Chalkboard which is basically included in iOS  for commercial purpose like me?
    I bought a mountain lion on appstore.
    I look forward to hearing from apple whether it is lawful or not.
    Have a blessed day~:)

    Strangely, there isn't and end user license on Apple's site regarding iOS. But here's a look at the font agreement section from OS X Mountain Lion:
    E. Fonts. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you may use the fonts included with the Apple Software to display and print content while running the Apple Software; however, you may only embed fonts in content if that is permitted by the embedding restrictions accompanying the font in question. These embedding restrictions can be found in the Font Book/Preview/Show Font Info panel.
    So basically, you need to examine the fonts to see if there are notes on usage restrictions or limitations.

  • While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

    While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

     Thanks for answering. The version is XI.0.10. I just did the update yesterday hoping that I could now properly edit a scanned pdf document. Yes, it's happening on most all scanned documents. I followed your steps & found the list of fonts used in the document & then attempted to edit. The same occurs. When I type in a correction, I get an error alert... "the original font (in this case Fd 5805) is not available or can't be used in editing. Acrobat is using the font Minion Pro in its place."
    When I select the text & right click as you suggested, my only choices are cut, copy, delete or select all, no "edit text".
    I have no other options to choose another font. Thanks for any help you can direct my way.

    When trying to upload a PDF to an interactive site I get the announcement: "The attached PDF file references a non-embedded font Tahoma. Please remove file, embed the font and reattach."
    I could not get rid of the Tahoma font in the WORD file.
    How do I embed this, or in fact any other font ?

    Thank you very much !
    Indeed, I was unaware of the enormous number of options that can be selected when converting a WORD file to PDF.
    I went thru the settings and found the right one for embedding the fonts.
    Thanks again !

  • Can I embed Arabic text in flash?

    1. If so, how can I do this? When I cut and paste an arabic
    text from a notepad or photoshop, all the characters comes out
    wrong.
    2. I believe I can use an external txt or xml file instead.
    But if I do this, would the user be able to get the right
    characters / fonts if they don't have the arabic fonts on their
    machines?
    thanks in advance.

    About embedding font outlines:
    Let's say I want to use a decorative font - call it
    "Lithograph" (one I commonly use) - to type the word "HELLO" in my
    Flash movie. Flash will embed the outlines of the actual shapes of
    the Lithograph characters H E L and O into the SWF. It treats them
    as actual outlines, not as fonts. That way, even if you don't have
    Lithograph on your system, you will still see "HELLO" in my SWF,
    formatted as Lithograph font. This applies to Static Text only. It
    is done automatically. You do not need to physically embed the font
    yourself. You do not need to convert the letters to shapes.
    Therefore I am GUESSING that the same thing happens when you
    use Arabic: Flash will embed the shapes of those Arabic letters. So
    the end user does not need to have Arabic on their system. Again,
    this applies only to Static Text, not Dynamic or Input text.
    To see whether this is happening, generate a Size Report (in
    the Publish settings), open the Size Report text file, and scroll
    down close to the bottom: it will tell you exactly which letters
    are embedded in the file.

  • Embed OTF Font as CFF in Pure Actionscript Project using Flex SDK 4.0

    I want to apply the method explained here: http://www.insideria.com/2009/03/flash-text-engine.html using only the Flex SDK 4 (not using FlashBuilder)
    Specifically:
    Embedding fonts can be tricky. In Flex, embed the font and store it
    using DefineFont4 and font subsetting currently only supported by Gumbo.
    A future version of Flash will support it but in the meantime, a Gumbo
    SWC with the embedded font must be created then adding to your Flash CS4
    project.
    The following is the method I am using to embed the fonts.
    public class Main extends Sprite {
         [Embed(source="../assets/GE Thameen DemiBold.otf",
                                  fontFamily = "GE Thameen",
                                  fontWeight = "bold",
                                  mimeType = "application/x-font",
                                  embedAsCFF = "true"
         private const GEThameen:Class;
    The following command line was assimilated after solving the output error messages using google and a little looking into how FlashDevelop works..
    mxmlc Main.as -load-config config.xml -managers flash.fonts.AFEFontManager
    The output SWF is not working as supposed, and the file size (20KB) does not seem to account for the embedded font. PS: When the font embedding is bypassed, and a device font is used for the text engine classes, the file works perfectly.
    The contents of config.xml are as the following:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!--This Adobe Flex compiler configuration file was generated by a tool.-->
    <!--Any modifications you make may be lost.-->
    <flex-config>
      <target-player>10.0.0</target-player>
      <compiler>
        <source-path append="true">
          <path-element>E:\actionscript</path-element>
        </source-path>
        <external-library-path>
            <path-element>C:\bin\flex_sdk_4\frameworks\libs\player\10.0\playerglobal.swc</path-element>
            <path-element>C:\bin\flex_sdk_4\frameworks\libs\flex.swc</path-element>
        </external-library-path>
      </compiler>
      <file-specs>
      </file-specs>
      <default-background-color>#FFFFFF</default-background-color>
      <default-frame-rate>30</default-frame-rate>
      <default-size>
        <width>800</width>
        <height>600</height>
      </default-size>
    </flex-config>

    After losing about 2-3 days to trying to figure this stuff out, I rolled back to build 4.5.0.19786 and the problem doesn't occur anymore.  I'll revisit this issue once we ship the product next week.
    Thanks Alex.

  • HELP! Embed PDF Font for Qoop Document

    I am attempting to create a book for qoop.com; howevver every time I attempt to upload the pdf, created in Adobe Acrobat (version 6.x), I get an error message stating that "The file you uploaded contains non-embedded fonts that we cannot print. Please embed the fonts and re-upload." I have contacted the Qoop company; however they just said to google it to find the solution....AWESOME customer service! At any rate I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. My file is all Times New Roman, has columns, bullet points and bold fonts (if any of this matters).
    Thanks SO much for any help you can provide.

    Select the Print or Press job options settings. The Standard settings does not embed Times Roman and other default fonts. Check the font properties of the job settings files to be sure. You can do that in Distiller if you like by selecting the job settings and then selecting edit => check the fonts tab. For the Standard, Arial and Times-New-Roman are both listed as never embed. They are not listed in that set for the Press or Print settings.

  • Cant embed a font in Edge

    Hello,
    I am trying to embed "Collaborate" font using each step of this tutorial: http://blogs.adobe.com/edge/2012/01/27/web-fonts-and-edge-together-at-last/
    But when I apply it to my text it keeps putting the default Arial font instead.
    I have copied the web font folder in my Edge directory and then followed all the step.
    When I save as I have this messgage (sorry it is in french)..
    I hope someone can help,
    Thanks!

    I have created another project, that doesn't give this message anymore ("Chemins non pris en charge..") but the font still doesn't work.

  • Embed all fonts in eps

    I have a lot of existing eps-files of which the option "embed all fonts" is unchecked.
    Know I have to check the "embed all fonts" in the existing eps-files.
    I tried to modify the script below, but it seems that the embedallfonts is NOT working.
    When I do it manually (without script), then it works fine. With script, it doesn't work.
    #target illustrator
    // PART 1
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    // PART 2 -> herbewaren eps als eps
    var destFile = new File(decodeURI(doc.fullName).replace(/(?: \[Converted\])?\.eps$/, '.eps'));   // also remove "[Converted]" from filename
    var options = new IllustratorSaveOptions({});   // new save as options
    options.compatibility = Compatibility.ILLUSTRATOR15;   // save as CS5
    options.embedICCProfile=true;
    options.embedAllFonts=true;
    options.pdfCompatible = true;
    options.useCompression = true;
    doc.saveAs(destFile,  options);  // save the file in the same foldere as the eps
    // PART 3
    doc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES);   // close the file with saving
    Another question will be: can I get a dialog box to put in the path to the eps-files, I can do thereafter it in batch instead of each time opening and closing a file.

    For the people who are interested. This script asks for a source and target folder, opens an ai or eps file, save to an eps file with fonts embedded, create automatic a scaled png folder and close the file(s).
