Can I force caching of data files?

Our applet is an open-source molecular viewer, http://jmol.sourceforge.net
It fetches molecular model data files from the web server.
The larger molecular model files are a few hundred kb in size.
They are being fetch using URL.openStream(), which uses the URLConnection class.
It seems that the data files are not being cached in the local data cache.
Q: What kinds of files get cached in the local data cache (.jpi_cache or .java/deployment/cache/javapi) ?
Q: Is there anything I can do to ask that my data files be cached?
Thanks,
Michael

>
The Java Plug-in caches files of the following types
downloaded via HTTP/HTTPS:
.jar (jar file)
.zip (zip file)
.class (java class file)
.au (audio file)
.wav (audio file)
.jpg (image file)
.gif (image file)
So your options could be to jar up your files and
access them using the jar util classes (Im not 100% if
this can be done for your situation) or a bit of a
hack, is to rename your files to one of the above.
Hope this helpsI develop Java applets too and I load .zip archives via URLConnection. I got the same problem as -michaelthoward-:
My files (.zip) are almost NEVER being cached. Almost means that if I load the applet from my hardrive (effectively from localhost) they will then be cached.
At the moment I use the "dirty trick" -maherrj- mentioned too,, by renaming my .zip archives to .jpg.
But even then it can happen that bigger files (about 300kb up) are STILL NOT CACHED. This strange and unreliable behaviour of the Applet Plug-In from Sun takes effect from Java 1.2 to 1.5beta2.
If anyone has ideas (I don't dare to speak of fixes) please write.

  • Can I force iTunes to display file extensions?

I just downloaded iTunes  yesterday.  It's my first experience with the program.
Can I force iTunes to display file extensions?  If so, how?
For example, when converting an MP4 audio file to an MP3 one, neither shows its extension, and so the two files appear the same within iTunes.

I wrote a program for Windows to embed the downloaded
artwork into the file. Please note, embedding the
artwork takes up more disk space; Apple's method of
NOT embeddeding it means they only have one copy of
the artwork. Embedding the artwork takes up X times
as much space, where X is the number of tracks for
that album. (e.g. if the album artwork is 500 KB,
and you have 10 tracks, the disk space consumed is
    10*500KB or 5000 KB (~5MB))
    http://home.comcast.net/~teridon73/itunesscripts/itune
    sinsertartwork.zip
That sounds exactly like something I am looking for. Yes, I realize that I am sacrificing disk space to do this - but I have a lot of space to spare on my iPod and I am really tired of redownloading artwork when I change the way I organize my files (or God forbid I have to do a full restore at some point).
I am running your tool now and it looks to me like it works great! Thanks for posting it, I truly appreciate it. Do you know of any sites where people develop these kinds of tools for iTunes (I suspect you participate in one or more of these).
One question - from the looks of it, you do handle the case where I have already embedded my own artwork in files (for those that are not in the Apple iTunes library). Does iTunes actually put that image in its database (the one I embedded) or did you have to allow for that in your utility? Just curious.
Thanks a LOT for that utility!

  • Can I share a .accdb data file on OS X Server?

I want to set up a Mac-based computer system for my new business but need to use some PC software too... Can I share a .accdb data file on Snow Leopard Server among the client Macs (which will be running the PC software with Parallels)?

The .accdb file extension is typically used with the Microsoft Access 2007 Database file extension.
While it is possible to serve files from Mac OS X to Windows via SMB protocols, it's not common to serve (shared) databases that way. Few multiuser databases support that, and [Microsoft indicates there are issues here|http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/access-help/ways-to-share-an-access-data base-HA010279159.aspx], and specifically: +This is the simplest option, but it also offers the least functionality. The database file is stored on a shared network drive, and people use the database file simultaneously. Reliability and availability can become issues if there are multiple simultaneous users changing data. All database objects are shared.+
It's far more common to migrate to a native database format and serve that (and Windows clients can access MySQL and other databases via ODBC and JDBC), or to serve the contents of the database from a SharePoint or from SQL Server running on Windows Server.
I know you're not looking to use Microsoft Windows here, but Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server probably isn't a good fit for what I'm assuming is your [construction management application|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12474506] requirement. (If this mixed-OS environment goes off the rails with this application such as with Microsoft Access, who are you going to get support from?)

  • Where can I find the Reminders data file in Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find the data file for the reminders in Mountain Lion?  When I recently synced my iPad to iMac it deleted the 50+ reminders that were on the iMac.  I have done hourly backups with time machine but would like to know where to go to find these to reinstate them.
Also, does anyone knows how to turn off the reminders sync as I'm not using iCloud and there does not appear to be any option to sync reminders in iTunes?
    Thanks a bunch!!

    Hi,
in JDeveloper 11 the deployment is in the project properties. I am not sure they are written to the file system anymore

  • Can I reimport originals after data files are deleted?

While selecting photos to burn to a cd I copied folders from the 'Data' folder in iPhoto library. I then moved several individual files, which I did not require for the burn, from the cd to trash - before I had burned. I did not realise that this would delete the data files from the iPhoto library itself. I emptied trash before checking back with iPhoto and now, of course, those images disappear from my library whenever I open iPhoto. However, I still have the photos saved in two locations as 'Originals', but when I try to import them back into iPhoto a message appears to tell me they are unreadable. The 'Originals' files are not corrupted, but how do I reimport them into iPhoto so that they reappear in my Library Data folder in their old locations?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You do know that the Data folder only contains thumbnail sized files that iPhoto uses within the library, right?
If you can see the blank thumbnail boxes in the library and can click on them to bring up the full sized image you have a good chance at recovering the library by rebuilding as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't resurrect the library then you'll have to start with a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library. Here's how:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the iPhoto library folder from the desktop. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
In the future, Don't mess with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. See TD's treatis on file access for how to access photos for use outside of iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can I force migration of data from the old sync to the new?

I have two old instances of firefox (version 18 and 24) with sync set up; these are not accessible. How can I get the data from that account migrated to the new Sync backend without disconnecting these clients from Sync?

The old and new sync use the same backend but that may not help you here; if for instance; you were hoping to do directional merges.
Note the old and new syncs use a different account, and that the new sync only offers a merge option.
    * [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]
*[[How do I choose what types of information to sync on Firefox?]]
Relying on sync alone to backup bookmarks could result in all devices having corrupt bookmarks listings.
If you have bookmarks involved I personally strongly recommend you manually back them up before making any sync changes, and thereafter do so at regular intervals - say every 2nd week. Sync is not good at handling large changes and large merges of bookmarks, corruption or duplication could occur.

If I overwrite one ID file with another, can I try to recover the overwritten file somehow?
    I'm using ID6 and Windows 7.
    Thank you.

This reminds me that many continuous or sceduled background backup systems save incrementally, so may be possible to recover a past version.
And, going forward, don't overlook starting a new habit of manually using Save As to a new file name with a version number in its title, like document.indd, document01.indd, etc.

  • Can Bootcamp Assistant cache its support files?

I'm needing to run the Bootcamp Assistant several times to get the right Windows installation working with my machine, so I keep needing Bootcamp Assistant to build a new USB bootable installer. EVERY time I do this, it insists on downloading the "Windows support software". Over a gig.
...I know which installer package I need; I've downloaded it myself. Is there any way to get Bootcamp Assistant to cache the support software download so it doesn't need to fetch it every time?

Is this the correct model? I would not recommend Vista drivers on Windows 7. You can download these in .zip format and put them on a FAT32 USB flash drive and unzip these.

  • W520 - Lenovo Password Manager - Can .CSV or .DAT files be imported from other Password Managers?

    The title says it all!
Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager.
If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
No you can't import .CSV or .DAT files into Password Manager. It uses a .PWM file format, and uses a 256-bit key Advanced
Encryption Standard (AES) with Microsoft CryptoAPI. You can export your info to be used in another machine with the Thinkvantage Password Manager installed, but not from another password manager.

We have one 10.2.0.4 database to be migrated to a new box running 11.2.0.1. The 10g database has too many data files scattered within too many file systems. I'd like to consolidate the data files into one or two large chunk in one file systems. Both OSs are RHEL 5. How should I do that using Data Pump Export/Import? I knew there is "Remap" option could be used, but it's only one to one mapping. How can I map multiple old data files into one new data file?

    hi
datapump is terribly slow, make sure you have as much memory as possible allocated for Oracle but the bottleneck can be I/O throughput.
Use PARALLEL option, set also these ones:
    * DISK_ASYNCH_IO=TRUE
    * DB_BLOCK_CHECKING=FALSE
    * DB_BLOCK_CHECKSUM=FALSE
set high enough to allow for maximum parallelism:
    * PROCESSES
    * SESSIONS
    * PARALLEL_MAX_SERVERS
    more:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28319/dp_perf.htm
    that's it, patience welcome ;-)
    P.S.
For maximum throughput, do not set PARALLEL to much more than twice the number of CPUs (two workers for each CPU).

    P.S.2
    breaking news ;-)
I am playing now with storage performance and I turned the option of disk cache (also called write-back cache) to ON (goes at least along with RAID0 and 5 and setting it you don't lose any data on that volume) - and it gave me 1,5 to 2 times speed-up!
Some says there's a risk of lose of more data when outage happens, but there's always such a risk even though you can lose less. Anyway if you can afford it (and with import it's OK, as it ss not a production at that moment) - I recommend to try. Takes 15 minutes, but you can gain 2,5 hours out of 10 of normal importing.

  • Error when trying to install the iSCSI target - Cannot find the Windows PowerShell data file 'ImportExportIscsiTargetConfiguration.psd1'

    Hi,
I'm just attempting to setup an iSCSI target on a freshly installed Windows 2012r2 box, but I get the following error when attempting to Create and iSCSI virtual disk via the wizard after a successful
installation of the iSCSI target role.
    The full error is:
Cannot find the Windows PowerShell data file 'ImportExportIscsiTargetConfiguration.psd1' in directory 'C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\IscsiTarget\en-GB\', or in any parent culture.
I tried to uninstall, then reinstall the role but no go.
The Server Locale and UI was all updated to en-GB but this folder does not appear to exist in this location. Rather, the folder I can see is:
    'C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\IscsiTarget\en-US\'
I'm going to attempt to copy the 'en-US' folder to 'en-GB' to see what happens, but I would like to know why this has occurred in the first place? Other roles have installed (such as AD DS AD CS and
IIS) on other machines with no issue.
    Many thanks

    Hi Chris,
The error "Cannot find the Windows PowerShell data file 'ImportExportIscsiTargetConfiguration.psd1'" occured, because the file 'ImportExportIscsiTargetConfiguration.psd1' can't be loaded under the folder en-GB with current culture.
I recommend you can copy this .psd1 file under  'C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\IscsiTarget'. Essentially if PowerShell can’t find the specified data file for the current culture it will “fallback” to the top-level data
    file in this case.
