Can I generate separate Word docs and retain cross-references?

I've poked around the forum and am seeing an answer to this, so forgive me if it's already been answered.
I'd like to generate separate Word documents from within RH8 (as opposed to a single Word doc of the entire help system) and yet retain the functional cross-references across documents.
As it is, if I generate the help as a group of Word docs, only cross-references having destinations within the same Word document are present. That's not hugely surprising, but it would help me a great deal if intra-document cross-references were present in the generated Word docs.
Any ideas how I can do this?

I believe that might work if you used the master document method. That said I strongly recommend that you research Word's master document method as everything I have read indicates the Word gurus suggest it has problems.
Why would you want all these links working? If that is needed, shouldn't the user be accessing the online help?

  • How do we duplicate FM books and retain cross-references?

We are using FrameMaker 10 in a Windows 7 environment.
This post is related to an earlier post of mine:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4237821#4237821
Note: To resolve this issue, we are willing to completely reorganize our folder structures or our user guides themselves.
    We have the following contraints:
    1. Our clients often require us to give them user guides in Microsoft Word, so they can edit the content as they customize the product over the years.
    2. So, to avoid giving our clients Word documents that are in the vicinity of 500 to 600 pages in length (which often makes Word documents unstable), we break apart our user guides into two different guides: A procedure guide with step by step processes, and a guide that lists all windows and all window elements (tabs, fields, buttons, etc.).
    3. The procedure guide has several dozen cross-references to the windows guide.
    4. When we create WebHelp with RoboHelp, we combine the two guides together so the cross-references in the procedures are working hyperlinks to the corresponding window descriptions.
And then we have one more constraint.
Because we customize our product and user guides/online help for all of our clients, we start with a "baseline" starting point.  We have a "baseline" procedure guide, and a "baseline" windows guide.  So, we have to duplicate both of those guides to start customizing it for each client.  The customization changes about 40% of the starting "baseline" content, and we have several concurrent contracts with various clients (so, we don't want to solve the problem I describe here by continually adding new conditional text to the baseline content every time we start customizing content for a new client).
So, we duplicate the two books when we start the customization process for a new client.  We duplicate the procedure guide, and we duplicate the windows guide.
As you can imagine, we can use the "save as" technique in FM to preserve the cross-references that are internal within a single book, but we cannot figure out how to preserve the cross-references from the procedure guide to the windows guide.  We end up having to manually fix all cross-references in the procedure guide that point to the windows guide.
Does anyone have an idea how we can regularly duplicate the original "baseline" books, and preserve the cross-references from the procedures guide to the windows guide?
Thank you in advance for any ideas.
    Tim

  • I downloaded a word doc and can't open it on new computer which has pages installed

I downloaded a word doc and can't open it on my new computer that has pages installer

Have you tried dragging it onto your Pages icon?
Is it by any chance passworded?
It helps if you give some details:
eg What version of Pages you are using?
Can you just open Pages on its own?
The file extension and origin of the word doc
What message does the computer pop up when it fails to open?
Otherwise it is all just guesswork.

  • After I exported a PDF to a Word doc and downloaded it, I can't get the pointer tool to work.

After I exported a PDF to a Word doc and downloaded it, I can't get the pointer tool to work. When I click on the document text, the only tool is the "move" tool. I can't edit or select text. Please advise.

Version of Adobe: Adobe ExportPDF (not Pro)
    Operating system:  Windows 8.1
Steps I am taking: When the PDF file is selected and opened, I clicked on Tools menu on right side of the screen; then I clicked on Select PDF file; then under Convert To, I selected Microsoft Word (*.docx); then I hit the box below that; and clicked Convert. I then see the message that says it is Converting to Export PDF Online. Then I see a link below that, that says Download Converted File. This takes me online to Adobe Acrobat .com, where, I see the command, Export PDF, and see a blue box on the same screen that says Select PDF Files to Export. I click on the thumbnail of the file I want to export. This brings up, online, a screen containing the file I wanted to convert to Word. Then, on the same screen, I click on the icon on the right hand of the screen that says Download. then I click on the box on the bottom the screen that contains the Word document I had wanted to convert. This brings up the Word doc. in Compatibility Mode the latest Word version, which I am unfamiliar with and which has a Picture Tools tab that I cannot escape from and I cannot get any selection tool other that the Move pointer, and I cannot find the Select text pointer to select any text on the page. I don't want this Word version and do not know how to return to the old version of Word that I am familiar with.
    Can you help me, please?

  • Pls tell me how I can convert a PDF form to a Word doc, and have radio buttons etc work?

Pls tell me how I can convert a PDF form to a Word doc, and have radio buttons etc work?  My PDF form did convert using Adobe PDF Export.... but the formatting is a schamozzle if I try to do anything with it.  Most importantly, I need the check boxes and radio buttons to work in Word!

Checkboxes and radio buttons are form objects from Acrobat.  There is no equivalent for these objects, with the way they were constructed, within Word.
    I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Notes App That Can Import Word Docs and Record Audio

I have Pages now which you can import Word docs to.
I have another app that can record audio and take notes, but you can't import documents.
Is there an app that does both? Import Word docs that I can edit and then also record audio at the same time?
    Thanks!!

Yes you can use Pages for Word documents and transfer the files as Word documents to iTunes and then to your desktop via file sharing. I use it. Frankly I haven't paid attention to any of the spell check features at all so I can't say for sure that it will work the way that you want it to work.
From everything that I have read about Pages v Documents to Go, I was under the impression that Docs to Go was the much better choice for all around compatibility with Word files. Actually, Pages has some issues going from Pages on the iPad to Pages on the Mac in terms of compatibility and formatting.

Do you see disconnected Arabic or nonsense?  If nonsense, it could be an encoding problem.  Use the camera icon here to  post screenshot of what you are seeing.
It is important to understand that MS Word for Mac has never supported connected Arabic.  You have to use some other app, like TextEdit or LibreOffice, and sometimes select the text and change the font to one of those provided by Apple, like Geeza Pro.

how can I edit a word doc received in my icloud mailbox on my ipad?

You need a compatible app in which to save it such as Pages or Documents to Go.
Find an app that is compatible with Word that you want to purchase and then after you download that app - go to that email and you can select the "open In" option. Tap and hold down on the open document in the email and select "open In' and select the app that you purchased.

  • Word docs and PDFs on iPad

I don't have an iPad yet but I'm considering buying one. Can I transfer a Word doc or a PDF from my computer to an iPad in order to read it? To edit it?

You have to be careful with annotation apps. With some, you can view the annotations in some pdf readers but not others. There have been discussions about this before, below I include a post by GNRBeaumont. I have PDF Expert, but it can't create the two types of annotation formats (see below) - but it does have other features that are valuable. Since iAnnotate PDF can handle the two formats, I bought that as well. You'll also be wise to have several pdf readers, since some do not read material that other do. Anyway, the post I referred to...
"I have spent several hours of research and trial and error and money on numerous apps to learn a surprising thing about pdf.
Annotations will not show up unless [1] the viewing app supports the particular format by which the annotation was added or [2] You are using an annotation that saves in image format (still a pdf file).
I like the latter but that means the annoation can not be edited.
The best for "2" are neu.annotate and noterize. When your annotations are made in this format everything will read it including built in email attachment viewer.
Number "1" is a mess. If you use editable format for adding annotation then the built in email viewer will not show it and many other pdf readers (iPad and desktop) MAY not read it. I have had really crazy combos, including one where my desktop would see it but when it printed the annotation disappeared.
The app in "1" category that seems most universally reliable is pdf expert.
iannotate is the only one I know of that lets you choose what format (editable or non editable) to save in. But it currently has a rotation bug that they are working on.
Since I want to make sure that whomever I send annotations to can see them, I use method "2" "

  • Can not open MS word docs

I have an emac running 10.2.8, two users, when i sign in and try to open a word document from the desktop a window opens and says i can not open the document because it's in use by another user. I created this document and the other user has not signed on in months. I then tried all of my word docs and the same message appears. I've shut down the computer, restarted putting in my password but same problem occurs. I repaired permissions but no change. These are my docs and no one else is "signed in" or using them. I cannot copy them or send them via email (which now unexpectedly quits upon opening), Do I need to archive and install?, How much free space on the hard drive do I need to reinstall the OS?
    Thanks for any response.
    Joe

Many system issues can happen as the hard disk drive's capacity is over-full
with saved content and there is no room left in the hard drive for the OS X
and applications to function. The drive should have more than 10% free of
content in order for the OS X and Applications expected to run in the Mac
to have room. This space is for swap files, virtual memory, and flex space
where the system has to automatically find and use free space for most
    everything the computer can do.
{There are specific rules (seen online in helpful articles, some in Support)
on how to transfer iTunes music libraries or make and restore archives
to external hard disk drives and maybe save to DVD if possible; these
    and iPhoto libraries eat up essential space on a hard disk drive.}
The drive is over-full and a failure (including damage to the physical drive)
is a matter of time. He should try to archive music on DVD off the Mac
& then free-up that space on the internal hard disk drive so the OS X
and apps can use the free space for their required functions. Moving a
few dozen original items, after saving them off the computer, to Trash
may be helpful, but that would take a lot of time & looking.
An externally enclosed drive, properly formatted for OS X and capable
of booting the computer (firewire 400) is advised; at this point.
My computers have about 50% empty hard disk drives; that free space
allows the OS X's automatic virtual memory allocation to create and use
that space to help the apps and system function properly. When it is not
there, the system tries to overwrite non-essential files or could cause a
kind of corruption to happen on the main hard disk drive...
The documents and other permission issues are a symptom of other stuff.
    A computer in a good state of maintained health requires some effort;
and when that is not done routinely, things get slower and as the drive
gets full, stuff can fail. So, to free-up user created files such as music
(including hidden duplicates if they exist) so that space can be reclaimed
and used by the OS X, is a good idea.
To get and use an externally enclosed hard disk drive in a self-powered
unit with AC Adapter, probably a FireWire ported one so the transfer
rate is fast enough to get the job done (USB 1.1 is too slow to boot an
older computer, so FireWire can; a clone of the entire computer could
be created on a formatted FireWire bootable externally enclosed drive
and that could be used as a bootable backup.) Archiving this way is a
way to keep all the files and their status collectively together; then if
something happens to the computer's internal drive, this remains.
To boot the computer from the OS X install disc and see if a disk repair
and a permissions repair can be done in that disc's version of Disk Utility
may be helpful. Not sure if that old of a system will tell you much in this
Disk Utility (on installer disc, but not used to install anything) but you
can Verify the SMART status of a hard disk drive & also try to repair it.
But the drive is over-full if there are only mere MBs of free space. He
should look into the Get Info (File menu in Finder) on the Hard Drive
Icon to see what the total capacity of that drive was, and how little is
remaining; then work on getting rid of non-essential items, so as to
save the system itself from damages. Also, if the computer is getting
    older, it may be time to consider a new replacement hard disk drive;
and if so, a larger capacity one could be installed, and the older one
put in an external FireWire enclosure, then the content may be cloned
back into the computer on a partition or direct; so there'd be more
free space that way for the contents. (Or weed out non-essentials, too.)
More information would be needed to proceed, since this situation is
at best sketchy and could be problematic to say the least.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Copying word.doc and excell spreadsheets

    I just bought a new Curve 8330.
Can I copy word.docs and excell spreadsheets to my Blackberry?
    If so, how?
Thank you for any help you may give me.
    Gordon

    Yes, you can.
    1. You can email the files to yourself and from the BlackBerry device, download to your Media Card.
    2. You can set the Media Card to Mass Storage Support, and move the documents from your PC to the BlackBerry while connected to the PC via the USB cable.
    See this:  http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/How_do_I_add_media_files_to_my_microSD_card%3F
Now, if you have OS 5.0 on your device, (Look at Options > About, third line down beginning with a "v.4.xxx") you will have DocumentsToGo and WordToGo and SheetsToGo installed on your device (look in the Applications folder).

  • Clicking a link to a Word doc and it tries to open it with Adobe Acrobat

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine. I have Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3 and Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) installed. I clicked on a link to a MS Word doc and I got a dialog box asking what I wanted to open it with. The default option is Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3, which, of course fails with an error message saying it is not a supported file type. I looked at the other options and Microsoft Word is not among them.

Save the Word document. Create your email in your normal mail application (Mail?), click on the add attachment icon (the paperclip if you are using Mail). Navigate to where you saved the Word file and select it. It should now appear as an attachment in your email. If you are sending it to a PC user and you are using Mail make sure 'Send Windows-friendly attachments' is selected in the edit menu. And if you don't want the attachment to display inline within the body of the email Control+Click on it and select 'view as icon'.
