Can I reformat the space created by a single tap of the space bar?

Question

Can I reformat the size of the space created by a single tap of the space bar?
What I would like to do is have the space bar create a double space [with just one tap of the space bar] between each word in the current document I am creating.

I would use Auto-correction
string before = standard space
string after = EN QUAD ($2000)
or EM QUAD ($2001)
or EN SPACE ($2002)
or EM SPACE ($2003)
In the first line,
between a & b I inserted a standard space
between b & c I inserted an EN QUAD
between c & d I inserted an EM QUAD
between d & e I inserted an EN SPACE
between e & f I inserted an EM SPACE
In the second line,
between a & b I inserted a standard space
between b & c I inserted two standard spaces
between c & d I inserted an EM QUAD
between d & e I inserted two standard spaces
between e & f I inserted an EM SPACE
So, it seems that EN QUAD or EN SPACE give the exact wanted space.
Now, it's time for me to try to find the difference between EN QUAD and EN SPACE
According to Wikipedia, they are identical but EN SPACE and EM SPACE are the preferred ones.
