Can I run as a non-administrator?

I run on a Windows XP user account that does not have administrator priveledges. The administrator installed ADE and I can run it. However, if I attempt to get a book from Adobe's web site, it wants me to install ADE. Of course, if I try to install it, that fails with a message indicating I need "administrator access". Is there any way I can run as a non-administrator user (so not being able to install a program), but still download books?

Hi,
All that one need to run application in NWDS is the SDM password to deploy the applications .
who ever know the SDM password can simply install NWDS on thier PC , deploy and run applications.

• Can't run programs installed under Administrator

Our user DLU's run at the User level, so we install any extra software that isn't on our image using the local Administrator account. Sometimes users are prompted to enter the Administrator password just to run such software, but it seems to depend on the program.
Virtual Apps are not always possible so I'm trying to understand the mechanics of why Users can run something installed under Administrator.

If you want them to be able to install software, make them part of the
administrators or power users group.
Of course, what's gonna happen to them WHEN they install improper software
(not IF, it is a WHEN).
What software are you trying to install?
You should probably look up the app @ the website www.appdeploy.com
While not specific to ZCM, it has an incredible wealth of info on specific
applications and how to deploy/package them

Most users are trying to install simple .exe files for browser addons
and they are nearly attacking me for the rights to do this. There has
got to be an easier way than trying to make a bundle each time some
small install issue comes up.
I just want my users to be able to install whatever they want. If they
blow up their machine we can reimage it.

• Can't run programs from non-admin account: redux

Background: I have years of experience with PCs, very little with Macs. I work with children in a group home. The tech support people who set up this iMac (OS X 10.2) have long since departed, and no one in the organization has any clue as to what changes they made to this system, and I'm sure that those tech people made some changes. For example, in admin accounts other than "root," either there is no access to the Utilities folder or the folder has been well hidden.
The Problem: The boys in this home will use a non-admin account. The programs I have installed for them will run under admin accounts but not under the "boys" account, which is non-admin. The system tells me that the account does not have enough access privileges to run the programs. (Program that had been installed before I got access to this iMac will run under the "boys" account.)
In discussions on this forum several months ago, I thought the answers I got here had helped me solve the problem. Then, for administrative reasons, I did not touch the iMac until last week. What I thought had been solved is not solved.
From "root," using the "Capabilities" option in the Accounts folder, I have added to the "Add other applications..." section the programs I want "boys" to have access to. But this doesn't work. When I log in to "boys," access is denied: insufficient access privileges.
If I give up on this system, the boys will not be able to use this iMac, and that would be a shame.

I realize that it sounds like I ignored all the previous advice before I drafted this latest post. But the first thing I did when I returned to the iMac was to look at the posts.
I didn't touch the system for six months. I was waiting for approval from administration to upgrade the OS. By the time I got the approval, upgrading was no longer an option -- according to the manager of the local Genius Bar. This system is not capable of running 10.5, and Apple will no longer sell 10.4. I can find 10.4 on the Net, but those are private sellers and the price is too high.
Now that I've got that out of the way, the current task: I have no idea why, but the gains I accomplished six months ago have disappeared. The "boys" account can run none of the software I installed. No one else has touched the system. (I live alone.)
I logged on as "root" and went to Accounts. Using 10.2's Capabilities function, I tried to check all the boxes for "boys." But when I close the screen and then re-open it, the system has unchecked "Open all System Preferences"; "Change Password"; and access to "Utilities."
At this point I cannot create new folders under "boys." "boys" can run software that was installed before I got the machine, but that's all.
I have to assume that I inadvertently did something that wiped out my previous gains. But I ain't got a clue.

• Can't run programs from non-admin account

I'm new to the Mac and rusty with -- but not new to -- UNIX. I'm working with an iMac running OS X 10.2. I have installed several programs in a non-admin account (called "boys"), but they will not run from that account. The "get info" screen tells me that the "boys" account is the owner of the program. Read/write permission is enabled. When I try to run the programs, I get this error message: "The operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges." I have installed the same programs in an admin account, and the programs run just fine from that account. I'd like to get this working so that the boys in the "boys" account can actually use the system. I have "inherited" this system from prior users. Programs that were on the system when I got my hands on it do run -- for the most part -- from "boys."

Thanks for the reply, Ken. My various unsuccessful attempts to solve this problem led me to create a folder named "Programs." (I know, my PC roots are showing.) I did this for two reasons: 1) I hoped that this would give me more control over what was happening; and 2) I wanted to give the children with whom I am working an easy way to find the programs that I want them to use. When I use < cd /users/boys > and then do an ls- l, I see the Programs folder. An ls -l on that folder shows all the program I have loaded and indicates that the "x" permission is applied to owner, group and others. Moreover, I assumed (incorrectly, perhaps) that installing the programs using the "boys" non-admin account would make them the "owner" of the programs and that "x" permission would follow. Well, ls -l indicates that they are the owners and that they do have execute permission. I can only guess that the prior users of this system -- and nobody in this organization seems to know where they are -- did something that requires more than Advil to overcome.

• Can't Run AA3 After Non Activation Version Install

I began using AA3 after a recent new build that put out of service a DAW that ran Cool Edit on Win 98. Since the acquisition of Syntrillium by Adobe, I’ve kept my upgrades current, but still used CEP on the old DAW.
The new DAW ran fine with AA3. I completed a project and took a year off music production. Came back and discovered the AA3 activation servers have been shut down. I do the special download and install thing and get this message:
Current user account doesn’t have the privileges to perform product activation. Run this application from a user account with administrative privileges or contact your system administrator.
I uninstall, delete the down load, download and install again two more times and the message remains the same.
My OS is Win-7 Home Premium with no other users. I turn the computer on and it boots right to the desk top. What's the deal?

Ok, I did some research and figured out what was going on in my particular case. I have been using Path Finder for a long long time, and have had it to cover up the regular desktop with its own. In the past Path Finder would change automatically when the regular desktop changed. HOWEVER it seems Apple disabled a system wide notification event in 10.7.4 that lets other applications know when the desktop changes.
[[NSDistributedNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(desktopImageChanged:) name:@"com.apple.desktop" object:@"BackgroundChanged"];
So PathFinder was never getting notified of the change. If I turn off PathFinder's desktop the main Finder desktop seems to be working fine. There is actually a setting in PathFinder to use the desktop picture from the Finder desktop while using all the icons from the PathFinder desktop, so i am using that now, and it works great. It is suprising that an option like this even exists, but fortunately it does.

• Can't install add-in for non-administrator

Hello all,
I'm having trouble getting the Adobe Connect add-in installed under a non-administrator user's account. I found a successful method of installing it in this thread, but that method is no longer working for me. As the forum in question is currently down, I'll paste the post below:
I know this is an old thread, but we recently had this issue. Our users do not have the ability to install software, and using admin credentials at the UAC prompt installed it in the admin's profile, instead of the user's.
Here's how we solved it and made it per computer on Vista SP2. All without turning UAC off.
1) Log in as an admin and install the Connect Add-In.
2) Browse to the plug-in directory; directory should contain 1 .exe and 1 .s. **Note, there is a space in ...\Flash Player\...**
C:\users\%your_admin_account%\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\www.macromedia.com\bin\connectaddin6x5\
3) Run the connectaddin6x5.exe file, which will create 2 .dll files. It will also launch a window, which is okay to close after the 2 .dll files have been created.
4) Copy "\www.macromedia.com\bin\connectaddin6x5\*.*" to a central location for easier access.
5) Copy "\www.macromedia.com\bin\connectaddin6x5\*.*" to c:\users\default\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\www.macromedia.com\bin\connectaddin6x5\*.*
**When any new user to the system logs in and their profile is generated, this will include the Connect Add-In plugin
6) For users who already have a profile, we created a simple .bat script to xcopy the directory structure and files created in Step 4 to "C:\Users\%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\"
7) Have the user run the script once and the plug in will be installed for the user.
8) Log in to/Refresh the meeting.
I hope this helps. If there's a better way to do this without disabling UAC, I'm interested. Or maybe an MSI to push with GPO. Or even a Setup.exe that can be run with User privileges. But with 10-15 users per computer and 100+ computers, this was our best solution.
Evan Franklin
Field Service Engineer, SAIC
The computer that I used this method on had the add-in working fine until a few days ago, when the add-in stopped being recognized. Repeating the process yielded no results. When installed as an administrator it works fine, and launching the browser under administrator credentials allows the add-in to run, but this is not an acceptable solution for the long-term.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Having the same problem has anyone come up with a fix yet?
Since the connect 9 update to our hosted account we can no longer use in the connect add-in for meetings. we lose all the screen sharing option that we once had working fine.

• Adobe Updater can be run only by users with administrator rights error on 2003 termianl server

I just installed the latest security update of 8.1.7 on my two terminal servers. Now when each users logs in, they get the following error.
Insufficient Rights (title)
Adobe Updater can be run only by usrs with administrator rights.
They simply click OK and it goes away but it is very annoying. It seems like every time their is an update to Adobe Reader, something goes wrong.
Does anybody have any thoughts on how to stop the Adobe Updater from loading when my users login? Thanks,
Justin

I ended up finding the solution at this link.

Here is the solution I found.
"Renaming %program files%/Common Files/Adobe/updater5 to something else removed the error."
This seems like a brute force approach, but it does work. I checked the event logs after doing this and don't see any errors in the App or System logs. This folder is the location of AdobeUpdater.exe and all of the Adobe .cer files, so it makes sense that this works, but seems like it should generate other errors...
This is not how I wanted to solve the problem but it did solve it.

• Allow a windows non-administrator user to run cmd.exe as administrator without sharing administrator password with the user

I have standalone Windows 2003 and 2008 Oracle database servers (they are not in a Windows domain environment ). The Oracle DBAs can perform all their routine activities from command line with administrator privileges. For this i've to either share administrator
user password with the Oracle DBAs or add their windows login user to Administrators group. If i can give the DBA user permission to run windows command prompt without sharing administrator password, i can give them non-administrator login access to Windows
2003/2008 server. Normally when a non administrator user would try to run a program as administrator on Windows 2008, the user is prompted to input administrator username/password. Is it possible to give non-admin user access to run a program/application (cmd.exe
in this case) on Windows 2003/2008 without sharing administrator credentials with them?

With the OTORISER application I developed, normal users can run applications with admin privilege …
Otoriser is totally free ! Applications, mmc consoles, control panel cpl files can be run under admin and system context with Otoriser. Let’s say you donot want your users to be admin in their machines, but want them to run some applications with admin rights.
If this is the case then you are on the right blog.
There are two components for Otoriser. Management and client components. There are no complex implementation and no frustrating steps to be performed. Within 10 minutes you can start testing the results
After you download the setup files, install client components in the client by running it directly (or any deployment method you have), it will take about 5 seconds to install it. Then, let’s say you want your user to change system properties of the machine.
With the tool provided in Admin package produce the hash of system.cpl file and enter that hash into the group policy (details are provided in documentation). When policies are applied for that user then he or she can run that control panel applet under admin
context but donot forget that the user is still an ordinary user.

Hi everyone. I get this error during the update of Solution Manager 7.1 SPS4 (dual stack) to SPS10. It is a green install. This happens during the

As of EHP3, you could still install some EHP components. On an ERP 6.00, you could just push SAP_APP to 6.03 and move on. Now if you want another component in your system with an EHP4 version, you can't have some components at EHP3 and some at EHP4. You would install EHP4 for the new component you desire updated and part of the work will be to also update SAP_APP to 6.04.
EHP4 is an UPGRADE process, with shadow instance & all the joy of an upgrade process. You can either run ressource minimized or downtime minimized. In resource minimized, the shadow instance runs on the same server as the main instance. Downtime minimized allow to run the shadow instance on a separate / new server. Anyway you go, you will always have a "Downtime Phase" when you bring back the updated components from the shadow instance toward the real production one.
As with any UPGRADE project, the benefits of installing EHP4 for your business has to weighted against the downtime cost.
Our tests so far on small systems (few data, few users, 120GB database) show ~3 days process from EHP3 to EHP4 (all components) with a downtime phase of about 22 hours using the "resource minimized" path, i.e. shadow & main instance on the same server (4 CPUs, 16GB RAM). Until you give a try at your Sandbox or DEV systems, you won't have realistic figures for your environment.
Good luck!
