Can I use my iMac as a external display?

I would like to use the iMac as a second display for my PC laptop. Does Thunderbolt allow this?

    No.

  • Can I connect to iMac 27" as external display?

I'm considering buying 2 iMac 27" to run Windows 7.
Can I connect these two together so iMac 1 can use iMac 2 as external display and visa versa.
In other words... is the mini display port both for input and output?
If yes... does this work under Windows 7 as well?

I just love Mac hardware, and an iMac (two in my case) on a desk is just such a nice clean setup, with only one cable. Just counted 16 cables for my current PC mini tower setup with 2 screens - don't ask
Just so you know, I'm well aware of Apple's "cableless" marketing for this thing. But on my new iMac, I actually only have a single port, the FW800, that doesn't have a cable sticking out of it.
But Mac OSX is just not a nice operating system IMO
At least we can use you as an example of a 100% legitimate Mac owner of a Windows OEM install.
Anyway... I just ordered 2 x 27" iMac's. If i somehow succeeds in getting them connected in Windows, I'll post here... if not feel free to ask me, in 6 months.
Please do post back, because if someone tries it, then everyone will know if it works. I have seen reports of a PC driving the iMac display and I have done it with my MacBook Pro. I'm still not 100% sure that two iMacs will cooperate in this way. They both have the same cable connected to the same input/output port. Which one is the target? I have never heard of Windows or any PC hardware having the ability to convert a video port to input, so Windows would have to be the broadcaster. You may need MacOS X to detect the input and use it instead of trying to send out its own signal. Hopefully this won't short out the video circuitry on both.
And in 6 months when you are reinstalling Windows to clean off all the malware, you can still use the Mac machine

  • Can I use my iMac as an external hard drive?

My iMac monitor recently gave out. The CPU is working fine (according to a diagnostic test). Rather than investing in a new monitor, I plan on getting a new Intel based iMac. Can I use my old base as an external hard drive and how do I boot it up as a hard drive? Thanks.

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

  • Can I use my iMac as a display for a G5 - New Mac User

I am still a fairly new iMac user, I would like to know if I can use my exsisting iMac with someones elses G5, and use my iMac as a screen display for his G5. Im sorry if this topic does not belong in this forum, I did try searching thru other forums to post and read up on this info.
Please direct me to the right place, or answer my question. Thanks in advance.

Here's the scoop, if you want to use any iMac as an external display for a G5 Mac you have these options.
    1. Target Disk Mode, only available on iMacs with Firewire:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58207
This only gives you access to the data files of that Mac and basically treats it as an external hard disk.
    2. Networking via ethernet, wireless, or Firewire, you can setup Virtual Network Computing or Remote Desktop:
    http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=VNC&os=macosx
    http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?os=macosx&keywords=remote+desktop
    3. As others have suggested, somehow to remove the VGA cable from the logicboard of the iMac and connect it to the Mac externally.
The external VGA port of iMacs only display what is on the Mac itself and as far I know can't be used in a reverse signal application.

To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display

  • How can I use my iMac6.1 as a display for my MacBook Pro

I have a relatively old iMac 6.1 that I would like to use as a diplay for my MacBook Pro:  any idea of how I can do that and what connecting cables I would need?
    Thanks.

Unless the MBP has Thunderbolt you can't use the iMac as an external monitor unless you get ScreenRecycler. If the MBP does have Thunderbolt you need a Thunderbolt cable. Because Thunderbolt is so new finding a cable could be quite a challenge, you may want to contact Lacie and see if they can sell you one other than that I have no idea where to find one now.

  • IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

    Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?
Thank in advance for any help.

I don't think you can.  Wish I had better news.  Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK.  I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac.  The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt.  So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't.  What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell.  Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.

Can I use my iMac screen as an external screen for my PC laptop ?

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.
