Can Java make server side socket connections?

I plan on placing a java file (application or applet I don't know) on a website and have my application connect to the java file and tell it to connect to another host (outside of the website's domain) and send and receive data. Is this possible? If not why? If so, then should it be an applet or an application? Would I need to have it listen on a specific port or what?
I read this (http://java.sun.com/sfaq/):
"How can an applet open a network connection to a computer on the internet?
Applets are not allowed to open network connections to any computer, except for the host that provided the .class files. This is either the host where the html page came from, or the host specified in the codebase parameter in the applet tag, with codebase taking precendence.
For example, if you try to do this from an applet that did not originate from the machine foo.com, it will fail with a security exception:
Socket s = new Socket("foo.com", 80, true);"
- sun
And it through me for a loop.

Think about this:
Any webpage may contain an applet.
Imagine the security implications if an applet could do whatever the developer wanted (erase your hard-drive, read your data, run your programs) without your permission.
Network connections are another example of the same thing.
Imagine you visit a webpage and an applet pops up that uses your computer to make a connection to government websites in an attempt to hack them.
Yikes.
So basically what happens (by default) is an applet starts of with a reduced set of permissions to protect the end user.
An application (by default) starts with more permissions you'd expect an application to have.
This is all configurable by the person who will be running the Applet or application. If someone trusts you, they can set up their runtime to give your applet all permissions, or give it a particular set of permissions. Or you can sign the applet with a digital signature, and if the end user trusts the certificate, and trusts you they can give your applet permissions that way.
Java Security, however, is not something that can be covered in one post on the forums.
You should probably look for some online tutorials/documentation or get a good book.

  • Java Chat (Server, Client Socket Connection)

    Assignment:
    The assignment is to deliver two source codes that can run a Server (1) and Clients (2) in order to create a simpel chat program. The server has to wait and check an IP (localhost) + Port, and the client has to connect to that port and create a socket connection. The only thing that should be done is create a new socket connection for each client... and when a client sends a message, the message should be delivered to all clients connected to the server.
    Problem...
    However I can read an edit Java, it's difficult for me to write it. I allready found many turturials about socket connections on the internet, and tried to edit those, but they don't really do what I want unless I really write new shit. Is there a way you guys can help me with this, or that you find a really good website that fits my question?

    According to me ,
    take string variable 'str'
    Take some class ,I think u already taken.....
    Scoket scoket = new Socket(IP,port);
    OutputStream out;
    IInputStream in;
    in = socket.getInputStream();
    out = socket.getOutputStream();
    If sends the msg then use
    out.writeObject(str);
    This line sends data to the other user
    msg resivce from client then use
    str = in.readInput();
    & this str set to the any objects out put .
    Such as TextField.setText(str);

  • Server/Client Socket Connection

    Hi, I am trying to program a simple server/client socket connection program, the main function is to send and receive objects between them. I somehow went wrong and the connection between them keeps terminating right after establishing connection. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?
    This is gonnna be kinda long post.. sorry. These are the code that starts and ends the socket connection. I'm kinda desperate for this to work.. so thanks in advance.
    appinterface.java:
    //Set up server to receive communications; process connections. 1x.
         public void runServer () {
              try {
                   //Create a ServerSocket
                   server = new ServerSocket(12345, 100);
                   try {
                             waitForSockConnection();     //Wait for a connection.

  • How can i reuse my existing socket connection

    Hi,
    this might sound basic, it probably is:
    As part of my larger project, i have to send and recieve data to multiple socket connections.
    The thing that happens is that everytime i send data, it seems that java is creating a new stream or something (code is multithreaded)
    so as i send 4 items of data, a bit like a chat program sending 4 statements, it creates 4 different streams, instead of using the same stream. therefore when i close the connection, i get:
    java.net.SocketException: Connection reset 4 times.
    i know why.. its because i have added the:
    Socket socket=new Socket(host, port);
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
    PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(socket.getOutputStream()));
    bit in the same method with the
    out.println(THE DATA....);
    out.flush();
    The thing what i want to do is to create the connection one, and reuse the objects:
    out, in and socket
    to send / recieve the new data.
    please help me guys,
    thanks

    }The send autoconnects as required. It then send on message/packet/object.
    The getNext autoconnects as required. It reads one message/packet/object and returns.
    This allows multiple threads to access the same socket. It allows data to be sent while a thread is blocking on a read. (Thus two locks)

  • JDBC server-side Default connection doesn't work

    Hi folks
    I am using Oracle 8.1.6 Personal Edition on Windows 2000 with JDK 1.2.2.
    I can't connect to the database using the server side jdbc driver. Following is a simple program.
    ==============================================
    import java.io.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    class JdbcCheckup
    public static void main (String args []) throws SQLException, IOException
    // Load the Oracle JDBC driver
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver ());
    Connection conn =
    new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver ().defaultConnection ();
    // Create a statement
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement ();
    // Do the SQL "Hello World" thing
    ResultSet rset = stmt.executeQuery ("SELECT 'Hello World' FROM dual");
    while (rset.next ())
    System.out.println (rset.getString (1));
    System.out.println ("Your JDBC installation is correct."); }
    ==============================================
    When I run it I get the following error...
    Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:477) at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:159) at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver.defaultConnection
    (OracleDriver.java:2
    65)
    at JdbcCheckup.main(JdbcCheckup.java, Compiled Code)
    All my PATH and CLASSPATH variables are pointing to the correct places. I wonder why JServer/JVM is not giving me the connection.
    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi,
    Try using the complete database URL address in this manner:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    class JdbcCheckup
    public static void main (String args [])
    try {
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@<server_name>:1521:<database_sid>",
    "<user_name>",
    "<password>");
    // Create a statement
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement ();
    // Do the SQL "Hello World" thing
    ResultSet rset = stmt.executeQuery ("SELECT 'Hello World' FROM dual");
    while (rset.next ())
    System.out.println (rset.getString (1));
    System.out.println ("Your JDBC installation is correct.");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }

    Ive just got this phone for my daughter on Vodaphone contract, I am really worried however that it is going to randomly connect itself to the internet like my old Nokia 5800 used to! How can I make sure it doesn't, I don't want it to end up costing me a fortune. Many thanks

  • How can I make server use single class loader for several applications

    I have several web/ejb applications. These applications use some common libraries and should share instances of classes from those libraries.
    But applications are being deployed independently thus packaging all them to EAR is not acceptable.
    I suppose the problem is that each application uses separate class loader.
    How can I make AS use single class loader for a set of applications?
    Different applications depend on different libraries so I need a way that will not share library for all applications on the domain but only for some exact applications.
    When I placed common jar to *%domain%/lib* - all works. But that jar is shared between all applications on the domain.
    When I tried to place common jar to *%domain%/lib/applibs* and specified --libraries* attribute on deploying I got exception
    java.lang.ClassCastException: a.FirstDao cannot be cast to a.FirstDaoHere http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19879-01/820-4336/6nfqd2b1t/index.html I read:
    If multiple applications or modules refer to the same libraries, classes in those libraries are automatically shared.
    This can reduce the memory footprint and allow sharing of static information.Does it mean that classes should be able to be casted ?

    You didn't specify which version of the application server you are using, but the config is similar as long as you know what to look for. Basically, you need to change the classloader delegation. Here's how it is done in 8.2

  • How can I make my "passw.cgi" connect to DB

    I tryed to use my "passw.cgi"(written in Pro.c) to access database, but I failed. The reason is just as Chris. Rimmer indicated (in his answer to my another question) that my web server can not connect to my DB. In local environment, before I connect to the DB, I should first type the command:
    "source /opt/bin/coraenv" to set the environment, then I can connect to the DB. But in my passw.cgi, I could not set the environmen. I tryed to use the sentence: "system("source /opt/bin/coraenv");"in my "passw.cgi" to set the environment but I failed. Could somebody tell me how I can set up the environment for my "passw.cgi"(written in Pro.c) and make it passble to connect to the DB? Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi Glossopian, did you find a remedy to this? I just renewed my contract and upgraded my phone to the harrier. Like you my last phone automatically connected to any wi fi I had already entered a password into including home,  holiday accomodation, pubs etc. Now I have to manually tell it to connect every time I go out into the garden and come back into the house. Very frustrating!

    How can I make my ipadresume connecting my facetime calls?

    You may not be able to. There seems to have been an issue with facetime over the weekend, and going by the number of people having issues It's likely that it's something Apple needs to fix.

    Hi WLV_Jim2,
    Apple changed the way the OS functions with the 10.6 update.  Please refer to: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-print-pdfs-mac-os.html  This document outlines how to create PDF files with Acrobat 9 on OS 10.6 and later.

  • Server-side JDBC connection

    I am trying to establish a connection
    with the database containing my Java code
    I could use DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:default:connection:") but I don't want to.
    I use the following:
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@172.20.13.109:1521:SID","userName","userPwd");
    But this returns a NULL connection. I have dbl-checked the Host IP address already. Is it because it cannot find the SID ?? Where does getConnection look to find SID ??
    Does it look into TNSORANAMES.ORA to locate the SID ??
    Any idea why using Thin JDBC to connect to the default database is returning me a NULL connection ??
    Thanks if you can help !
    null

    you asked :
    Where does getConnection look to find SID ??
    the answer is you must provide it !!
    if your SID is "ORCL" then do the following :
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@172.20.13.109:1521:ORCL","userName","userPwd");
    substitute your actual sid as required above.
