Can migration assistant install on two drives?

I am purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace my G5, and would like to use Migration Assistant to move everything. However, I am also considering for the new machine a SSD drive for boot, with everything else on a hard drive. Is it possible to have Migration Assistant move just the OS and apps to one drive, and everything else to a second drive? If possible, would I be playing with fire . Thanks.

Not easily. Both +Setup Assistant+ and the similar +Migration Assistant+ will only transfer to the volume you're running from.
Your best bet may be to use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your apps and most user accounts and data to the SSD (perhaps omitting some large folders).
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum.
Then either move some large things to the HD, or use Time Machine to restore the things you didn't transfer there (you'd need the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, and restore to an alternate location, per #16 there).
Another option would be to transfer just an account and default folders to the SSD, copy the home folder to the HD, then use Time Machine to restore the other folders there.
Once everything's there, change the account location via System Preferences > Accounts: click the padlock to make changes, enter your Admin password, then right-click the account you want to move, select +Advanced Options+ and change the +Home directory.+ Do this very carefully, of course!

  • Can I use a TM backup and Migration Assistant to "merge" two machines?

    Here's the situation:
I have a TM backup of an iMac which is being recycled to another use. This iMac has a couple of user accounts, and applications, including VMWare and XP pro.
I have a MacBook pro, which has user accounts and applications (It's been in use for a couple of months.)
What is the best way to transfer all of the iMac "stuff" (user files and applications -- have I left anything out?) to the MBP?
Migration Assistant looks like it might be the right tool -- is it? Or should I do it another way?
I'm worried that the user account on the iMac and the MBP might have the name username and/or the same numeric userID. Does it matter? If it does, what's the easiest way to check the userID?

    Ok, I wasn't clear enough...
The iMac has user1 & user2 as user accounts, and MSOffice, VMWare and XPpro as applications
The macbook has userA as a user account, and the usual suspects in Applications.
What I would like to end up with is either user1 and userA as two separate accounts on the macbook, or (better) all of the user1's user directory copied into a subdirectory on userA's account properly owned by userA. (I don't care one way or another about user2). And I need the Applications out of the iMac's Applications folder to end up in the macbook's Application's folder. (I can come up with install disks for MSOffice, VMWare and XPpro if that's easier, too.)
Any advice on how to do this would be gratefully received!

  • I am unable to connect my PC to my Mac using the Migration Assistant.  The two computers do not seem to connect and I am not sure on how to do so.  I'm using an Ethernet cable and neither computer recognizes the other.  How can I get the two to connect?

The PC keeps saying "Waiting for your Mac to Connect" and the Mac keeps saying "Looking for Computer"  I have no clue what to do.

I suspect you didn't follow the Migration Assistant instructions. Please carefully look over:

If you still cannot get it give AppleCare a call, the number is in your owner's manual. You have 90 days of free telephone support when you purchase a new Mac. They can assist on the OS X side but remember they may not speak MS Windows.

  • Migration Assistant finds external hard drive but says it has 0 kb in profile

I'm trying to transfer all my stuff from one MacBook to a Macbook Pro. I have been saving Time Machine back ups on an external hard drive for a few years on the original MacBook, running 10.6. I know it has been backing up properly because all of the files are there when I browse the backups folder.
When I go to Migration Assistant on the MacBook Pro and choose back up from Time Machine or other disk, Migration Assistant recognizes the external hard drive, but when I click through, it shows my user profile and says it has 0.0 kb in it. Also says 0.0 kb for Apps and Documents / Files.
If I do Mac to Mac transfer through Wifi, it finds the entire profile and all of the files. That takes too long, though, and I thought the purpose of having my stuff on a hard drive was to make this process really easy.
Appreciate any help anyone can give me about getting this to work right. Thanks.

I did this just yesterday yesterday. I put a new disk into a G4 iMac, installed a fresh copy of Tiger on it and then migrated the user folders across from the old drive that I put in a firewire enclosure. Obviously if you go for an Intel Mac then you will have to be careful with the applications.

  • Migration Assistant with External Hard Drive

Can the Migration Assistant be used with an external hard drive which has a complete install of OS X on it?
I am finally upgrading my old iMac for a new iMac. I plan on harvesting the old iMac's 60 GB drive and put it in an external enclosure for added storage. Though the old one's firewire ports work fine, I thought it might be easier to migrate the old iMac's settings from the "new" external drive rather than going through the targeted disk mode and all.
    Thanks for any opinions,
    Michael

  • Migration assistant form a Firewire drive back to a MBP

    Hi
My MBP has been returned for a replacement (3rd Time) and I have made a complete clone of the hard drive with on a fire wire drive. I would like to know if I can use migration assistant to transfer my details using the firewire drive. I don't want to do a complete system transfer, but only my settings etc like migration assistant does it. I cannot loose e-mails and reinstall everything this time round again...
    Please advise.
    Regards
    Mike

If you made a clone of the drive, why not just clone it back on the repaired MBP. That way you would be sure all your files, settings etc. are on your new computer. The Migration Assistant will miss some files. I frequently lose monitor profiles and many apps, such Adobe CS, are broken by MA and need to be reinstalled.

  • Why can't I install the RAID driver?

I'm a newbie with a newly built system, I originally wanted to set up a RAID0 with my two drives but I ran into a problem using the instructions in the user's guide.  No matter how many times I pressed F6 to install the RAID driver, it just won't load and pressing CTRL+I does nothing.  Eventually I gave up and just install the drives as IDE drives and installed the OS on the first drive.  After installing the OS, I tried to install the IAA RAID Edition but it keeps saying that I don't have the right I/O Controller installed even though I know I do because I checked it using Intel's chipid program.  I'm running out of ideas, can anyone help me?

    In Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config:
You must have 'Configure SATA As Raid" set to "yes"
Then if you have the drives attached to Serial1&2 properly(data and power), you'll be able to use control-I to enter the Raid Utility and configure the Raid.
Then load the XP setup CD and hit F6 to install the Raid drivers and continue the WinXP installation.
The Intel IAA Raid Edition will Not install if it detects the Bios setting mentioned above is not enabled OR if there are no Raid configured drives.

  • Migration Assistant not displaying relevant drive

I purchased a 1TB SATA internal HD for my Mac Pro tower last night, with the intention of making it my start up disc. Currently I have a 500GB HD in bay 1 of 4, with a secondary internal drive in bay 2. I put the new 1 TB into bay 3, slid the carrier shut, and launched Disc Utility and formatted the disc, no problem. I then launched Migration Assistant, with the intention of copying over all of my files from my 500GB current start up disc, over to the new 1 TB drive in bay 3. Afterwards, I was going to put the 1 TB drive into bay 1. Upon launching Migration Assistant, here is the first prompt that came up with two radio button choices:
HOW DO YOU WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR INFORMATION?
    • From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk?
Transfer information to this Mac from another Mac or PC on the same network, a backup disc, or another startup disc.
    • To another Mac
Transfer information to another Mac on the same network
I selected the first radio button (top bulleted item above). I was then prompted to provide my password by M.A. When I did so, another window popped up with two more radio button choices:
HOW DO YOU WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR INFORMATION?
    • From another Mac or PC
Transfer information to this Mac from another Mac connected to it, or from another Mac or PC on the same network.
    • From a Time Machine backup or other disk
Transfer information to this Mac from a back disk or another startup disk
Wanting to copy data over from my current startup disc, I selected the second radio button.
When I did so, the only choice I had was HD 2, which I didn't want, or a Time Machine backup of my startup disc (HD1) which was done too long ago to make it a currently relevant.
The big question is, after an hour of waiting for all the drives to be scanned, why wasn't the startup disc (HD1) offered on the list to choose from, instead of just the Time machine backup version of that same disc?
Would placing the new 1 TB drive into bay 1 instead of bay 3 solve the problem?
    Thanks, Carl
    p.s. Using Lion 10.7.1

    Thanks again, John.
While I was waiting for another reply, I tried something I had heard about that seems to have worked. I rebooted into Lion's Recovery Disc. I then launched Disc Utility and selected the Restore tab. The resulting window gives you a source disc field and a receiving disc field. I just selected the existing 500 GB startup as my source and my new 1TB drive as the receiver and hit restore. It copied file for file the entire contents over to my new drive in about an hour and a half. I renamed it HD 1, dropped it into bay 1, renamed HD 1 as HD 2 moved that into bay 2, and so on with the last internal drive. I set the startup disc in my Pref Panes as the new "HD 1".  It started up and remembered my username and password. So far, so good. Why do I get the feeling there's another shoe to drop? Maybe it's just my paranoia.

  • Can Migration Assistant Copy MSIE

My wife has an iMac that has MS Internet Explorer installed on it. She needs it to do account transfers at our bank. If I bought a MacBook Pro, would Migration Assistant be able to import a working version of MSIE from her iMac? I ask the question because Microsoft have stopped making MSIE available for Macs.
    Thank in advance,
    Bud Cook
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Bud;
I guess that is your call but there is absolute no
reason to write a web site for a business so that it
is browser specific. They should just be written to
the HTML standards. If they do that then there are no
problems. My thinking is that this is especially true
    of banks.
I do my banking with a credit union also and i can
use whatever browser I prefer to use. They don't make
any restrictions on what I use.
I am quite confident if you were too complain about
this and present the security problems they are
leaving themselves open to by forcing their user to
access them via MSIE, they would listen.
    Allan
I did tell them that everyone including IBM is telling us to use FireFox instead of MSIE but I got no response. I doubt they care much about Macs and if you have a PC, they also support Netscape.
As I pointed out above, there is only one function that won't work with Safari.
I've owned PC's since before IBM made them available to the general public and I've installed and used every version of MSIE including Betas since day one. I've yet to experience a virus on any of my machines.
I currently use MSIE 7.0 Beta 2, FireFox 1.5 and Netscape 8.1. Unfortunately, none of them work on a Mac.

  • Can migration assistant resume after being cancelled

I'm using Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro.  Each have same Mac OX 10.6.8.  I've connected them through a LinkSys router.  Migration ran for about 3 hours and 39 minutes before completion prompted that a there was a problem with the network.  I double checked all the connections and even replaced the router and the error message continued to appear.  I have no choice at this point but to cancel the migration.
Before I do, I need to know that assuming I do have a network issue and get it fixed, will I be able to resume the migration from where it left off or repeat the whole process again?
    Thanks.

No, it will start from scratch. You can always uncheck items that have already migrated but this removes a whole category from the process.
I suggest you connect the two computers by Firewire cable rather than use your network. The direct connection is much faster and more reliable. You only need a suitable Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode on the old computer - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • Trouble Installing Windows 2012 R2 (Windows can't be installed on this drive)

<p>I "binged" this error message and it seems to be beaten to death but my problem is not resolved. Basically, Im trying to install 2012 R2 on a server which currently also has CentOS6.3. Im not doing a dual boot and I want only Windows 2012.</p><p>During
the install process I hit error message below. I have tried partitioning my disk but I end up with Primary partitions and same error as below. I tried pointing the Load Driver option to the right driver for the SUperMicro motherboard but it comes back to the
same error. What am I missing and how can I fix this. All of the other links that the search found point to driver issues but did not mention which drivers exactly. Seems like I cannot upload images, but the error basically shows me
    Drive 0 partition 1
    Driver 0 Unallocated space
and below it shows me that Windows cant be installed on this drive.
    <br />

If you deleted all partitions (don't try formatting), you should have been presented with a volume with no partitions during the installation procedure.  You should be able to proceed at that point and Windows will initialize, partition, and format
the disk according to its needs.
If the disk is being shown to you but it still won't accept it for installation (it would be really helpful to get the exact message you are receiving), that is a little strange.  Possibly it requires a different driver.  At the screen that presents
the volume to use for installation, there is also an option to load a driver.  (I have to do this all the time because I am regularly using drivers that are not on the Microsoft installation media).  You have to have access to the driver in order
to be able to load it.  If the driver is on a CD, you remove the Windows DVD, insert the driver CD, browse to the location of the driver and install it, remove the driver CD, insert the Windows DVD, click refresh on the window, and you should be able
to proceed, if the problem was a driver problem.
The only other time I have had a situation like yours is when I have improperly zoned/masked a LUN from a SAN, but it sounds like you are dealing with local storage, so that most likely will not come into play.
Is this the only hard drive on the system?

  • If I purchase Adobe Standard, how many computers can I install it onto? And is there any way of buy an additional subscription? i.e. if it can only be installed onto two, is it possible to purchase a third installation?

The company I work for are looking to purchase Adobe Standard, how many computers can this be installed onto? We need it on three computers so if it is only possible to install it onto two is it possible to install it onto a third computer without having to buy the software twice?
    Thanks

    Hi There,
We would like to inform you that you can just activate 2 machines with one subscription, however, you can just use one at a time.
If you wish to use the 3 machine, then, you would have to purchase another subscription with a different email address.
You would need another email address, because the activation is done via email address and more than two activation on 1 email is not possible.
Please revert if you need any more information on this.
    Thanks,
    Atul Saini
