Can my iMAC use a thumb drive?

I have a thumb drive with photos downloaded from a PC.  Can I just insert that thumbdrive into a MAC USB port and read it?  (I've tryed o-- doesn't work).  What course of action should I take to move those PC-based photos to the iMAC environment?

A Mac can read PC formatted volumes. What happened, exactly, when you plugged in the USB drive?
Perhaps the photos were not exported in a format the Mac can read. Use whatever program the PC uses to read photographs and export them as jpeg or other format.

    Have leopard, can I with using lion thumb drive, install without first install snow leoapard ?

    The requirement for Snow Leopard was for downloading Lion from the app store. With Lion on the thumb drive, you can upgrade without SL.

    can i purchase lion on thumb drive so if pc crashes i can reload as i work offshore and cant use internet a lot

    Apple sold such a thing right after Lion was introduced last year - since Lion isn't even offered in the Apple store any longer, you'd need to call Apple to see if they have any left.
    As a workaround: you could create a bootable clone on an external hard drive which you could boot from if needed (you'd need CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create a clone) or, you could follow the instructions here for an install disk:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20080989-263/how-to-create-an-os-x-lion-ins tallation-disc/
    And, a third idea: download the Lion installer, but dismiss it before it wants to start installing. Find it in your Applications folder and drag/copy it to a safe place - that way, you'd have a copy of the installer (not bootable, but installable).

  • HT4527 I transfered my Itunes information using a thumb drive to my new computer and downloaded the newest version of itunes to my new laptop. My songs are all there on the new computer but it won't recognize my ipod and sync.

    I transfered my I tunes library to my new laptop using a thumb drive. I downloaded the newest version of Itunes to my new computer. My old ITUNES library of songs and books came across just fine. I can play them on the new laptop but they won't sync with my Ipod. The Itunes shows no devices when I hook it up to the laptop. Windows recognizes that the IPOD is hooked up. But no connection with ITUNES. Did I make a mistake in trying to sync my Itunes purchases to the new laptop before transfering the old library into the new ITUNES. If so how do I undo the problem.  Please help.  I use a PC with Windows XP.

  • Use of thumb drive screws up iPhoto

    What has trying to use a thumb drive done to my iPhoto files?  A couple years ago, I transferred many photos to a thumb drive as an iPhoto file.  I believe there was a trick to getting the iPhoto software over to the thumb drive, but I've no recollection how I did it.  Anyway, there was no problem with iPhoto on the thumb drive or on my MacBook-- both showed the pix they should have. The other day, I tried to move a few more photos to the thumb drive, but they didn't fall into iPhoto.  I guess that would require some extra software.  The annoyance is that when I eject the thumb drive and summon iPhoto, I don't see what should be on my computer but still see the iPhoto display from the thumb drive -- apparently it's been retained on my hard drive or in memory.  I've tried restarting the computer, after which the best I can get is an iPhoto screen with no photos at all in it.  There are three or four photo libraries on the hard drive, but none containing all my current pix.  I have found some of those photos on the hard drive by using Spotlight to list items with .jpg suffixes.  But they seem to be scattered, and I doubt that all the old pix are there.
    This all involves a MacBook running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 6.0.5, and a Geeksquad 4-GB thumb drive.

    Thanks for your prompt response to my posting.  In response to your questions and comments:
    1.  The thumb drive's format appears to be "MS-DOS File System (FAT32)"
    2.  "fall into" refers to the fact that the pix recently transferred to the thumb drive didn't go directly into the "iPhoto Library" folder already on the drive and listing material put on the drive a year or so ago but are listed as individual jpeg files.  I've dragged these individual pix into the iPhoto Library.  But I hesitate to boot from the thumb drive because of the mess it led to the other day.
    3.  When I enter /volumes in the Finder/Go/Go to Folder wndow, The volumes directory that appears lists aliases for my computer's hard drive and the thumb drive, which is plugged in at the moment.  Entering volumes in Spotlight produces only documents that mention the word "volumes."

  • Re-install lion using Apple Thumb drive

    I am having some problems with the sleep fucntion and want to consider a re-install of Lion as a way to correct the problem.
    I have a MacBook Pro, bought June 2011.  I upgraded from Snow Leopard using the Apple Thumb drive.
    Pretty much all advice for installing and re-installing Lion refers either to the downloaded version for the App Store or using a recovery file produced by the user after installation.
    I am just wanting straighforward guidance on the process for doing a re-install of Lion using the Thumb drive or whatever process is proper.
    I have a Time Machine set up with a Time Capsule.  Not really sure if this could end up causing me more troubles using the stroed data/files.  It may be those which are causing the troubles.
    If necessary,I am fully prepared to use an external drive to capture my files (photos, music and iWork stuff) and then use these as I need to for restoring data.
    Bottom line: how do I do a re-install of Lion using a MBP with an upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard from a thumb drive from Apple?

    Just plug in the thimb drive and reboot the unit. After you hear the startup sound press and hold the "Options" key. You willl get a one time boot screen where you can select the drive to boot to. Select the USB thumb drive.

    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • HT5287 If DVD Movies, Audio CD's and even burning CD and DVD's are not supported, what is the point of DVD & CD Sharing then? Wouldn't it just be better to remote in or use a thumb drive if it's only able to be used for data transfer?

    Or am I missing the bigger picture?

    As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

  • How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule ...

    So, I am in Oklahoma and my daughter is in Tennessee...
    She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
    She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.
    The question, then, is:
    How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule to do Time Machine backups?
    Thank you very much for your insights.
    Roberto

    It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
    Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
    Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
    Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
    TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
    No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.
    The setup for using the TC is explained in the bottom of this thread.
    TC in a second local network.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
    The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
    I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
    It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
    It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
    Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

  • Can I import my music library from pc to imac using a flash drive?

    I copied all my cds into my pc itunes library years ago. I just got the new imac and found that musicmatch / icloud blocked more than half the tracks on the imac (I can see them but they are grayed out, won't play, and their icloud status says "waiting"). Trying to import the tracks thru my ipod also didn't work. How do I transfer the (missing?) music over to the imac using a high-capacity flash drive?

    The easiest way is to simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
    This copies the entire library, not only the media.

  • Can I use Lion Thumb Drive as normal USB pen drive?

    I have Thumb Drive OS X Lion, the question is:
    Can I format this Thumb Drive and use if as a normal pen drive in Mac and windows PC?
    If yes, how do i format the Thumb Drive?
    thx! =)

    Yes; as a Microsoft FAT-format volume.  It's probably already in that format as most external storage devices such as traditional hard disk drives, flash disks or key drives or USB sticks arrive that way, and OS X can use FAT directly.  Plug it in, and you're good to go.
    If you want to erase and start over with a particular storage device – to reformat the storage as FAT – then use Disk Utility, in the Applications > Utilities folder, and select the formatting option.
    But if you're not going to use the storage on Windows (without having to reformat it back to FAT) and if want to use it to best advantage, I'd reformat Windows FAT or NTFS volumes over into the HFS+ volume structure; to reformat the storage using the native file system of OS X.
    As for how to reformat as FAT...  From the Disk Utility help:
    "You can use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer.
    Notice: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
    Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
    Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
    If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
    If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
    Type a name for the disk.
    The name’s maximum length is 11 characters.
    Click the Erase button, and then click Erase again."

  • Use a thumb drive for recovery startup?

    27" iMac late 2010 OSX 10.9.4. After recent startup disk failure, I've been interested in crash recovery steps. Can I use a 64 GB USB thumb drive for an emergency STARTUP DISK?

    Yes, but you don't need one that big. An 8 GB is sufficient.
    OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
    You could also install the full OS on that USB and be able to boot into a system as opposed to just Recovery.

  • Backing up photos on iMac using external hard drive and time machine

    How do i back up photos from my imac using an external hard drive and time machine
    Thanks in advance

    Apple explains how to use Time Machine in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427.
    Setting up and using TM is very simple to do, connect any external HD (format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utility ) and your computer shoudl ask if you want to use that EHD for a Time Machine backup. If you have any questions visit your local Apple Store or reseller and they can answer how to setup and use TM and also should be able to offer suggestions on EHDs. My personal preference is OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro due to the build quality and OWC's level of support.
