Can no longer connect to my network - AirPort Extreme

Hi everyone.
I have a small network in my home office and as of lately cannot connect on the wireless side for some reason.
My setup:
I have a linksys wrt54g router connected to my modem.
I have an Intel MacMini connected to the router via ethernet. I also my G5 connected to the modem via ethernet. Then I have just my MB Pro wit it's APExtreme card to connect anywhere in the house via the wireless portion of the network.
Now, I have always been able to connect to my network. I have simple wep protection and can connect to coffee shop hot spots outside my home (so I know the problem is not in my MB Pro or in the card). It has got to be in the router setup.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

When you restart a wireless network and things seem OK for a time, but the speed slows down after a time and connections become difficult....this is almost always a clear indication that the network is picking up some sort of wireless interference from another source.
The most common cause of wireless problems are cordless phones. If you have them, try turning them and their base stations off, restart the wireless network and try things out for a few hours if possible. If things improve, then you'll need to move the phones as far away from any wireless devices as possible, or as in my case, switch to cordless phones that do not use the same 2.4 GHz frequency as most wireless networks.
"Extended" networks are also more susceptibe to picking up interference than those that have a single router. You might try powering down the Express for a period and see if that makes any difference.
My neighbor...across the street....can literally bring my wireless network to a crawl and stop if he's in his front yard talking on his cordless phone, so it's always possible that a neighbor is causing the problem, or a wireless security system nearby.
Post back on your progress and findings and we dig a bit deeper if needed. Unfortunately, if you are in a crowded situation like apartments, condos, etc the wireless interference issue can be a real challenge.

  • IBook can no longer connect to wireless network

I have a wireless network set up in my home using a Linksys wireless router. While it has worked fine in the past, I can no longer connect to it with my G4 iBook running 10.3.9. It shows up in my network connections with a strong signal but when I open a browser it can't connect to the internet. When I try to open 'Internet Connect' to explore the issue I get the spinning beach ball and have to Force Quit. When I open the network status window, I get a message for Airport that says "Airport is connected to the network 'name of my network'. Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet".
I have an iMac G5 connected to the router through ethernet cable and it works fine. I have an iMac G4 connected wirelessly to the same wireless router and it works fine. I have a Dell laptop that can also connect wirelessly to the wireless router with no problem.
It appears something is corrupt with the Internet Connect utility?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Doug

What type of IP address are you getting? If it starts with 169, it indicates that your iBook can not connect to the DHCP server provided by the router.
Have you enabled the MAC address filtering on the router? If so, remember that you must add the AirPort MAC address for your iBook.
If you have a correct IP address, perhaps it is a DNS issue. See KB 106798, Mac OS: Troubleshooting "A connection failure has occurred", "The specified server could not be found" or Similar Messages.

  • Guest Ipod touches and husband's iphone can no longer connect to internet with airport. But Ipad2 works and so does hard wire computer. where is the problem and how do we remedy

WiFi connections no longer working on Iphone and guest's Ipod Touches. How do we remedy this problem. The Ipad2 and hardwired computer are working with no problem

I had the same problem -- only iphones couldn't access wifi all of a sudden.  I solved it this morning by uploading a previous firmware version to my Time Capsule.  The solution was offered in a different discussion in the iphone section, which I found at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15180888#15180888 :
    Eureka thats the problem
The iOS 4.3.2 and 4.3.3 for iphone is not compatible with the firmware 7.5.2 for apple airport extreme and time capsule. If the WiFi router is an apple airport with firmware 7.5.2 an iphone with the updated firmware will not be able to detect and connect to the WiFi network.
Solution The iphone firmware can not be downgraded, the airport firmware has to be downgraded
    1)  Make sure that the settings of your Airport Extreme are in mixed a/b/n mode
    2)  Open Airport Utility
    3)  Select Upload Firmware from the BaseStation menu
    4)  If you current version is 7.5.2, click Upload Firmware
    5)  Select 7.5.1 from the pop up menu
    6)  Restore Firmware
Now the WiFi network is detected and connected perfectly as before upgrading the iphone to 4.3.3.

  • IMac G5 isight Can No longer connect to internet over Airport

I have an iMac G5 that has been working fine on my Airport Extreme wireless network for 3 years. Suddenly, I can no longer access the internet over my Airport connection. The computer is on my local Airport network wirelessly (I can access it from my laptop and share files). I can connect to the internet from 4 other computers connected to the same wireless Airport network (2 MacBook Pro's, 1 Powermac G4). In addition, if I connect my iMac to my laptop via a twisted pair ethernet cable and turn on internet sharing on my laptop, my iMac can connect to the internet. All systems are running 10.5.5 and no firewalls in place. I checked my internet preferences and they have not been changed from what they were before when it was working. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHY SUDDENLY IT STOPPED CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET OVER MY WIRELESS AIRPORT CONNECTION?

I have just experienced the same situation. Everything was working fine and now I can't connect to my airport from my macbook pro. I also have an iMac G5 working perfectly well on the same airport.
Could it be a latest update that has caused the problem?

  • Apple TV 1st Gen can no longer connect to wireless networks

My Apple TV (1st Gen) has recently lost the ability to connect to either of our wireless networks at home.  I rean the diagnostics at the reset screen and the Apple TV says it is performing normally.  In the settings, whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless network, I am now only offered "Other..." as a choice. Proceeding to the next screen, I enter the name of the network closest to the Apple TV -- an Airport Extreme set up for 5 GHz that this Apple TV connected with daily up until 2 days ago.  The Airport base station is perfoming normally, as my MacBook Pro can see it and establish a network connection without any difficulty.  The issue is limited to the Apple TV.  I did a Factory Restore, and now when I go to Wireless Network > "Other..." > Enter the name of the wireless network"  the resuit is always the same, and error message stating: "There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)".
This message comes up almost immediately, without requesting a WiFi password -- suggesting to me that this Apple TV has lost the ability to connect to ANY wireless network due to a hardware failure.
Q: Has anyone else in the Support Community had a similar experience with their 1st Gen Apple TV, and if so, did you find a solution to it?
Note: When I first noticed the connction to this Apple TV had gone stale (greyed out in the iTunes Airplay Speakers list), and prior to doing the Factory Restore, I could play back iTunes content stored on the hard drive, but could not connect to the local wireless networks.  I noticed that the Apple TV was running very hot -- it has alwasy run pretty hot to the touch.
If this Apple TV has died, I will get a 3rd Gen Apple TV, but wiill then have to work through the HDMI to Composite video + Audio issues, as this Apple TV is connected to our older (non-HDMI) TV.

Follow-up:  Able to connect with ethernet cable, downloaded software updates, connected to iTunes, and synchec content.
Next, disconnected the ethernet cable.  ATV1 froze and was restarted using the Menu + ( - ) combo on the remote.  Re-ran diagnostics yeilds: Apple TV is working fine.
Restarted, then went to configure the Wirelss settings.   Apple TV once again does not show either of the two wireless networks.  Selecting "Other..." and entering the SSID yields the same immediate response:
"There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)"
No change on the wireless front :-(   Bummer.
Looks like an ethernet connection is the only option left to continue using this Apple TV 1st Gen.
Thanks for your help. -- Paul

  • Can no longer connect to wifi network

My landlord controls our wifi and I assume he has the router or device somewhere in his apartment, as he lives adjacent to us. I used to be able to connect to our wifi network until yesterday when I came back after being away for a month. I expected this, as he had previously sent an email saying he changed the network password while I was away. When I tried to connect to the network, my MacBook recognized the network and tried to connect. Instead of connecting to the internet, the icon had an exclamation point in it and there was an alert that said something like "unable to connect to the internet." I figured this was because of the new password, so I went into launchpad > keychain access > and deleted the keychain that was attached to the wifi login for that specific network. I tried entering the new password but every time I try it says that I have the wrong password, even though I am 100% sure it is the right one. It still accepts the old password but it doesn't connect. I would normally assume that I'm entering something wrong, but the weird thing is my roommate is able to connect using the new password and my iPhone is also able to still connect, even though I didn't make any changes to the settings (I guess it's still using the old password). Does this make any sense? I can't seem to find any answers.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • T60p can no longer connect to the network

    Greetings,
In an effort to reduce hacking on my laptop, I configured server access restrictions at the BIOS level. In any case, I was left without the ability to connect to ANY network. Ethernet, WiFi, USB WAN prepaid access card.
I then relaxed all BIOS restrictions and after that, I can connect to a WiFi Network however, I still can´t browse.
After getting advice from a couple of friends, I:
    1. Uninstalled the Norton Firewall (which was apparently active but which I have not bought)
    2. Disabled the Microsoft Firewall and made sure the only active firewall was McAffee (which I am licensed for)
    3. Restored the McAfee Firewall setting to default values.
Now, I can connect to a WiFi Network, and, I can see down to packets being sent and received. IPCONFIG does reply with valid Gateway, Subnet mask and local IP addresses. However, I cannot ping sites like www.microsoft.com .
So, everything indicates that I am connected and yet I cannot surf either with IE or Opera...
Any clues? The local Lenovo support people have still not returned my calls.... Any help would be appreciated.

  • IPhone no longer connects via Airplay to Airport Extreme

Any device that was connected to my wifi was able to play music and video audio straight to my Airport Extreme. And then one day, it stopped. My iTunes on my computer connects to the Airport no problem, it's just the other devices. Yesterday, my friend connected with her iPhone but still not mine. She doesn't update any of her apps, ever. Is my iPhone simply to update to work with an older Express?? it's about four years old. Can someone help?

A simple first step is to reset your iPhone's network settings. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It will prompt for your passcode, and ask for confirmation. After that, you will need to connect to your wireless network again. No other settings will be altered.
If you still don't see an AirPlay icon, the gold standard for troubleshooting an Express is a "hard reset" (read below) after which you will need to reconfigure it. If you reset it, you might as well reset your iPhone's network settings again. Other devices may need to re-connect to your wireless network also.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then gently press and hold its tiny reset button. Don't apply any more force than required to feel a tactile click. Keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Can time capsule connect to ethernet through airport extreme and then send wifi on a different band ?

    Hope this makes sense.
At the moment, an Airport Extreme (n) is connected to a single wall outlet by ethernet and sends wifi signals at both 2,4 and 5 GHz.
I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme and connect to the AE with a very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
This way both are connected to the internet by ethernet (the AE directly to the wall outlet, and the TC to the AE's ethernet out), hence both should be able to send wifi at full signal strength.
In order to achieve full wifi strength I would then set the Extreme to (only) send at 2,4 GHz and the Capsule to (only) send at 5 GHz.
Please note that the house has an open (loft style) floorplan, so there's no reason to position the AE and the TC at a distance from each other for wifi reach throughout the house.
Dear Bob, what do you think? I've been reading up but didn't find a directly related post.
Is this the right way to go about it?
    KInd regards.

I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme
The position immediately above is poor.. and next to each other is even worse.. you are blocking the antennas from one side or the other..
Please  use a patch lead of around 2M (6feet) min.. and place them that far apart.
very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
Having the devices link wirelessly causes the speed to drop by half which is caused by double hop wireless.. it does not reduce signal actually.. but you can have interference issues.
The gap between two radio transmitters is so they don't flood the receiver on the unit next to them.. It has nothing to do with the room. If I stick two transmitter/receivers next to each other they need some space. It is also to give full access to the antennas which are spaced around the sides on the older N models.
You also cannot turn off one band.. If they are dual band models.. ie Gen3 AE and later. Gen2 TC and later.. they are permanently dual band. You cannot do anything about it.
You can simply set the channels.. although auto should work.. there are 11 channels for 2.4ghz.. set one to channel 1 and the other to 11.
At 5ghz there are heaps of channels.. set one to 36 and the other to 149.. or whatever is available.
You are not going to achieve anything much doing this unless you have more clients than bandwidth.. ie both boxes can fully service internet to up to 10 clients.. maybe more if each band is used properly.. you will gain nothing using two routers next to each other.

  • Can external HD connect to PS3 and Airport Extreme at the same time?

I currently have a external HD connected to my PS3 to play vids. Can I connect a AirPort Extreme to that HD at the same time to wirelessly drop files on the HD to play on the PS3?

Most likely, no. How do you propose that you would connect this drive to both devices simultaneously? Via a USB hub?

  • Ethernet MAC address has changed and I can no longer connect to the network

I have a new iMac, 21.5" running 10.6.4. It was purchased in the past month.
I am using it on an ethernet network and using DHCP to obtain the address. It has been working for the past few weeks. I turned it on today and it is failing to connect. After some digging around, it seems that the MAC address (Ethernet ID) has been reset to 00:10:18:00:00:00. This is different to the one it has been using last week.
I have not changed any network settings. Airport is working fine.
If I pull out the ethernet cable and reinsert, the machine tries to obtain an IP address. After a while, it returns with a self-assigned IP Address.
Last week, I did notice that it was taking a relatively long time (a minute or so) to obtain the IP address over ethernet. Plugging the same ethernet cable in a macbook, I am able to obtain the IP address for the macbook much more quickly.
I see that I could use ipconfig to change the interface address to what I believe is the correct address. Would this be sensible?
Why would the machine have reset the MAC address anyway?
    Regards,
    Neil

    Dear all,
I am having the same problem with a new MacBook Pro, bought end of October - for me it became apparent for software (Matlab, Comsol) that are registered with a licence file which was created based on the MAC address, and also when trying to register the computer to the company network. That software will only work those times that the computer "knows" its real MAC. Also, I found that audible audio books, managed through itunes, will not synchronize with the ipod at those times when the MAC address is at the producer's default (00:10:15:00:00). I never had network issues other than this computer registration, - no probs at home or elsewhere - , so it will depend on the individual setup which issue users observe.
I have had long phone discussions with different Apple support people, they have done checks based on Capture Data that I sent to them via email, etc.. They can't find the problem in the software/setup and they advised me to go the Genius Bar and have those guys look at the computer's guts.
Restarting sometimes did set the MAC to the real one, also running the code that someone suggested in Terminal sometimes helped.
Other than that, looking through the web, it does not seem to be an Apple-unique problem, but certainly one would like to see support to take care of that issue for Macs soon.
Also, thanks a lot for this thread! Otherwise the support guys on the phone would not have believed my : "the Mac address changes on a daily basis" and would just have brushed me off.
    All the best,
    Susanne

  • Can no longer connect to internet via airport

My roommate and I have wireless internet. I used it all last semester with no problems. Sometime in December, I was unable to access the internet (Firefox, Safari, tried both..) here in my apartment, even though Internet Connection shows a full signal under our Airport network. When I went home, wireless worked just fine on this laptop - same when I'm at a library with wireless.
I've tried restarting the wireless router, no success. I'm only able to access the internet when I'm plugged in directly to the router.
    Any suggestions?

Um it's an AT&T DSL wireless router. Yes, my room mate uses the wireless. On my computer in the top right by the airport signal, when you click it, our network is shown with a check next to it, so it must be the signal from our router.
There's an IP address when I unplug my computer from the router (when the web pages cannot be displayed), but when I plug it back in to use the internet, there isn't an IP address - just an IPv6 address.

  • Apple TV can no longer connect to network after upgrade.

I had heard that lots of people were affected with this problem with the software upgrade before this one so I deliberately waiting until this one came out before taking a chance. I was wrong.
After updating to 4.4. (3140) I can no longer connect to my network. It says there was a problem and gave the error messaged number: (5) in brackets.
I've had nothing but problems with both Apple TV's that I have owned, version 1 and this new version 2. I've a good signal from my router and I've used three different ones over the time I've had the two apple tvs.
    Anyone got any ideas.
I can't connect the apple tv directly because they are too far apart in the house. I can only connect by wifi.
There is nothing wrong with my wifi because I'm connected to it fine though my imac, iphone and ipad and laptop, (not all at the same time)

Ok, here's a solution, courtesy of our friends at AppleCare.
Unplug the router for 90 seconds.
I was running ATV2 with a Time Capsule.   The TC thought the ATV was still connected using its former IP address so wouldn't let it reconnect with a new one.
Hope this works for anyone else with same problem.

  • I recently installed itunes update and can no longer connect to network nor internet

I recently (sept 2013) installed itunes update and can no longer connect to a network nor internet wired /wireless. I know it is not the gateway as other devices work. Please help. I am not very knowledgable so exact instructions will be most helpful.

Try connecting your computer/laptop directly to the base station with an ethernet cable to one of the external ports and install your network settings. If it finds it there, it will find it after you've reloaded your network info to the base via the Apple Utility. Hopefully when you disconnect afterward, all will be fine. Be sure not to select "closed" network although Macs will login with no prolem, PC's have trouble doing so even with the network data stored in the internet settings.
