Can't boot archlinux

i'm not able to boot my arch linux and when i power on .. the grub bootloader loads normally but after thet it stays at infinite loop on this screen
https://scontent-cdg.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot … e=55B9FA81
the recent changes i made .. i just installed bumblebee and nvidia and bbswitch
(sorry for my english)
thanks for helping

There is nothing wrong with the bootloader, that screen comes after the bootloader has done it's job.
Silenthell, can you press Alt+F2 to switch to a TTY when at that screen? If not, try booting without "quiet" in your kernel boot arguments so that the boot process is a bit more verbose. Also see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot_debugging

  • Can't boot Archlinux with tripple boot environment [solved]

    Hi
I've two IDE HD's in my computer.
The first one is for Gentoo and WinXP and the second one should be for archlinux.
I installed archlinux on /dev/hdb1 or better /dev/sdb1 because the archlinux kernel detects the ide-drives with sd*.
The hole second hd is for the archlinux /-partition and I use the swap partition from the first hd.
Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf on the first hd /dev/hda2
    default 0
    timeout 5
    title=Gentoo Linux
    root(hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda4 video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap vga=794
    title=Windows XP

    title=Archlinux
    root(hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=794
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
Booting Gentoo and WinXP works wihout any problems. But when I choose Archlinux I get right after Enter -> "error 15: cannot find the file"
    What's wrong?
    Here is are my partitions:
    /dev/hda1     ntfs       (WinXP)
    /dev/hda2     /boot     (Gentoo)
    /dev/hda3    /swap     (Gentoo & Archlinux)

  • Archlinux & iMac - can't boot after deleting rEFLt

    Hello,
I havent used Linux for about 4month (Got to an iMac through work). But since OSX really annoyed me I wanted to install Archlinux again.
Tried several Tutorial for Mac installation, ended up with a blank HDD and tried arch only after several tries with OSX.
Accidently deleted rELft (Or however its called) now I can install everything, but I dont know how to boot.
I just get a blank white screen, and can boot cd or recovery mode etc. But I have no idea how to boot my Archlinux System, everything I tried failed or broke even more.
I really really hope someone here can help and explain me how I can boot Archlinux.
My partition table now consits out of 2 Partitions, root and swap.
I Also changed my Layout to MBR.

I am far from an expert on how to install properly on a mac.  But I'm pretty good at having linux improperly installed on two macs.
If you want a smooth quick efi-based boot on your mac, stop reading here and wait for better input.  If you just want to boot into arch, however, you *can* follow all the installation guides ignoring everything mac specific and pretend your machine were like any PC.  In the end everything will work ... with a very long boot.
This is due to - from what I understand - is mac's bios compatibility mode.  When I boot up one of my macs (single boot to arch, no refit, no uefi, no efi of any sort) I get the white/gray screen for about a minute.  Then it falls back to bios compatability mode, detects the boot flag on the disk, and starts up my boot loader (grub-legacy on one, syslinux on the other).  From there everything works fine.
Have you tried waiting at that white/grey screen for a while?  I've read the delay should only be 30 seconds, but on my macbook it is almost 2 minutes, consistently.

  • Can't boot installation cd on my Macbook pro 8.1

    Hi everybody,
I am trying to install archlinux for dualboot with os x. The problem is that no matter what I do I just can't boot the installation CD. First I come to the normal screen where I can choose to boot archlinux, boot existing os, do memtest etc. If I choose boot archlinux I get an output similar to this: (I am trying to copy the text by hand from my macbook to another computer)

And I get the same result no matter what i do. I have tried it on two different harddrives (both newly formatted and with a fresh install of OS X 10.6.6 fully updated), with or without premade partitions of many different kinds. I have made like 5 different cd:s and dvd:s and I now that at least one of them have worked on another macbook of the same model.
Please could someone help me because I have no idea what I possibly can be doing wrong.

    had the same problem today.
    My observations are:
    1) I tried that with brand new mac pro 8.1 - OSX just as I got it from apple. All worked, arch boot up and I was able to begin installation. eth0 worked as well.
    2) I tried it again few days later and got the same problem as you described/pasted. meanwhile I downloaded upgrade from apple - I guess that is what causes the problem. Basicly cd is not detected at all, so /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108 obviously is not there.
Anyway the solution to this was quite easy - sice in initramfs you can detect usb keys:
    1) Copy all the files from your arch-install cd to some usb key (just cp. no need to format/dd etc)
    2) try to boot from the cd like before untill you arrive at ramfs
    3) plug your usb key and hope it will get detected
    4) then do
    ln -s /dev/<usb key> /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108
    5) logout (exit)
and you have your arch booting
    Ho
    I'm ok with that procedure.
But now i'm on archlinux installer, how to make an proper installation of grub, that work?
Because all of the things I tried didn't worked.
    Thanks !

I tried to reinstall the machine, but during the install process the installer isn't able to create a swap partition.  Later, I got the error message "stale NFS file handle" at the console (I don't do anything with nfs here). Same errors with kvm-87 and 88.
I tried to install other distros, but any of them failed to install on the virtio disk one way or another.
Everything works with kvm-84. With kvm-85 libvirt (which I am using)  wasn't able to boot from a virtio disk.  Note that libvirt has nothing to do with the error/bug described above. This happens since kvm-86 with plain kvm started from the command line, too.
I am switching back to kvm-84 for now.
    To reproduce:
Get a Debian Lenny qemu/KVM image and virtio disk and try to boot it. Or try to install Debian Lenny on a virtio disk. There were other errors with other Distros, so I suspect that there is somesthing wrong with kvm since 86.

  • [SOLVED]Can't boot Arch after installation-grub use wrong uuid in bios

Hello I would like to ask for Your help and say hello. I'm new here.
I have one big problem with Arch. Can't boot it after base installation. The same problem with Arch, that was mentioned in this topic:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1294597
I have the same problem and the same error:
    No such Device: ad4103fa-d940-47ca-8506-301d8071d467.
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
    error: no such partition.
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
error: you need to load the kernel first.
    Press any key to continue..._
I'm new here, and with Arch, could you explain me how to fix it? I tried the solution given in the link above, several times but with each time i have errors and warnings from the post 1 in mentioned topic. I installed my Arch from usb thumb drive. Maybe this is something to do with it? Also, my hard drive that Arch is installed on is being connected to a "raid card" named Adaptec, but during installation my disk is being found so i think that drivers is present and works ok, so it is not related to this, also there is no raid present, i use it only as a mean to connect to motherboard because there is not enough sata port, and because:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/35626
he wrote that this error is also on virtualbox, so it is not my fault and Adaptec related issue.
    I haven't tried this yet:
    Sotanaht,
I had the exact same problem as you, but I was able to fix it by replacing the bad grub.cfg file with the grub.conf file found in the same directory. If you try this do not forget to back up your original file (just in-case smile)
because i don't know much about it, don't want to destroy data on my hard disks or to destroy my other distros (i use Ubuntu with derrativates such as Mint, Kubntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and Slackware 13.37 and 14.00).
If you could explain it in details i would be really happy.
I could post something about my setup, please write what. My computer is:
    -AMD X4 PII 955 runinng at 3.2GHz
-4GB DDR2 runinng at base clock (800 if i remember correctly)
-about 7 hard drive disk connected to a sata ports, one adaptec drive that i mentioned above and one dvd-rom
    -nvidia GTX260
    -850W PSU Chieftec

It is wrong, the root partition is different than in this, we can see that this grub leads to wrong root partition, i posted my root partition at the bottom from /etc/fstab. I don't know how to fix it - i'm not familiar with the dos names (hd 0,5 and so on).
    Here is my /etc/fstab:

  • Can't boot to all my partitions?

I have a few partitions on my mac, the default OSX partition, running snow leopard, an Ubuntu partition, and I just created a pair of Arch linux partitions. When I boot holding option, only the Mac and Ubuntu partitions come up (also the archiso CD). I made and mounted the ext4 partitions on /mnt and /mnt/home, and installed Arch properly. Everything worked wonderfully. Except, I can't boot the partition except through the CD. Does anyone know if there's a way to resolve this issue?

    Hi,
    Did you install a bootloader?

  • [Solved ?] Arch on Alienware 14, can't boot without nomodeset

    Hello everybody,
I just got a new Alienware 14, installed Lubuntu and Ubuntu with which I had various problems, including not being able to boot without the "nomodeset" option.
So I decided to migrate to Arch, followed the beginners guide word for word and everything worked fine, including uefi boot with gummiboot but
even here (obviously maybe) I can't boot without the nomodeset option.
What happens is that the screen goes black just after gummiboot has finished its work, and (obviously) if I use "nomodeset" I can't start X.
The computer in question has an intel i7 4700M and nvidia gt 750M.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [Geforce GT 750M] (rev a1)
I followed the Intel graphics installation guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel and tried the suggestions on "Troubleshooting blank screen during boot, when "loading modules" but nothing.
So I tried installing bumblebee and the proprietary nvidia drivers https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee but again, same problem...
    Im I doing something stupid?
Any log/command output you may need to help me?
    Thanks in advance

so, it appears that, as @Dheart told me, this is a bug in 3.11 kernel which prevents
the brightness settings to be correctly handled when KMS kicks in.
    for me simply adding       acpi_backlight=vendor
to the kernel command line solved the problem.

  • How can I boot to a fakeRAID -Raid0 set drive from a non-raid hdd

    Hi all,
First of all, my English is bad and I hope I can explain it what my problem is. Secondly, I need your expert help with my problem right now.
I'll just layout some hardware information and some history before I start. Currently, my motherboard has 3 hdd controllers which are:
    1) Intel - 6 ports --> contains 2 sets of RAID drives = 2 x 60gb SSD (boot drive) and 2 x 500gb HDD (data drive) both in RAID 0
    2) Jmicron - 2 ports --> 1 port is used by the DVDROM
    3) Marvell - 2 ports --> I don't use these ports as they are slow and are so bad - currently disabled in BIOS
HISTORY: Before, my 2 x 60gb SSDs (RAID 0) contained Arch 64 + Windows 7 64 with Grub as the main bootloader. I remembered having a hard time setting up intel fakeraid with Arch linux + Win7 dual boot before, but fortunately, with your help, I found the solution and I've been using it ever since until today.
NOW is kind of a different issue. I bought a new 60gb SSD (just one). I totally reformatted everything with my 2 x 60gb SSD Raid 0 and I decided to just use that exclusively for windows, still in RAID 0. My brand new SSD will ONLY have Arch64 on it. So I installed Windows 7 first on my Raid SSD set. I plugged my new SSD to the Jmicron port so I can take advantage of AHCI. I don't want to mix my new SSD to the Intel Controllers since its not RAID anyway. Anyway, I installed Arch 64 on the new SSD in the JMicron Port fine.
Now here comes the problem, I set the Jmicron port where the Arch is installed to be the primary boot in the BIOS (since GRUB is there) and I can't boot to Windows! It gives me an error that It can't find the target drive (Win7 in the Raid 0 - intel ports). I've tried modifying the menu.lst and trying so many combinations and It still fails. Of course, I can boot to Arch fine since the drive is independent. It looks like grub legacy can't boot to fakeRaid drives if its not installed on that same drive.
Can you give me advice on how to fix this issue?
Also, I was just thinking, is there a 3rd party Windows Bootloader, that can be installed in Raid 0, that can pick up Linux and boot from it. I was thinking of just making the Windows 7 as primary boot in BIOS, with a 3rd party bootloader, then just boot to Arch.
    Thank you!

Yes, I have redirected my User folder to the D: drive.
I know that some shared components must reside on the C: drive; that's fine. I just don't have room for the entire installation on there.
The real issue here is that, when a drive other than C: is selected as the destination, the CS6 package installs into a broken state every time, out of the gate, on my system. Some components get installed to D: and some to C:, but the various components of the programs seem confused about what exists where, as shown below:
I select a folder on D: as the destination folder for the install, and here is what I get:
64-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the D: drive as specified, but attempting to start them results in a configuration error message stating that the program must be uninstalled and reinstalled, and lists "Error code: 1".
32-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the C: drive against what I specified. The shortcuts installed in the Start menu for the 32-bit versions point to the locations where these program files SHOULD be, on the D: drive. If the Adobe folder containing the program files is copied over to the correct location on D:, these programs function normally with no errors.
I have the 32-bit versions working by copying the program files from C: to D:. I just want to get the 64-bit versions working as well.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated; I'm really looking forward to testing the CS6 suite on my system!

  • Can't boot properly in UEFI mode

    Hi!
After enabling "windows 8 feature" and booting in uefi only mode, no boot device is detected anymore. The efi shell comes up after the bios has started and I can't boot into windows. I tried a clear cmos but it didn't work. I have a Z87-GD65 (latest 1.11 or 1.1B bios) and my sata devices are a crucial mx100 ssd (with windows 8.1 64-bit), western digital black hdd and asus dvd reader. I'd like to be able to boot in uefi normally. Thanks for your help!

  • Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.

Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
    - when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
    - after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
    - I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
    - I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
    - I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
    - last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
    - during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
    - the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.

Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more.  One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it.  They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.  I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried.  The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it.  I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming.

  • I need help with my Macbook Pro... I can't boot it up because of a Kernal Panic.

Like the title says... I know there are some computer savy people especially with Macs on here so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Okay I will try my best to describe my problem...
I believe it was either Saturday or Sunday that the problem first happened.
I was watching a video on a site and I don't remember if I expanded to full screen, but the computer like froze up and a dark grey curtain fell over the screen that was somewhat translucent and this message popped up.
So since it's a 2008 MBP I have no restart button so I decide to hold down the power button until it shuts off and then turn it on again... same message appears... I do this like 3-5 more times and still the same thing.  So I decide to let it sit for a while, which turned into a day because I had to go to work, and while at work I started looking for solutions.
Came home and tried a solution that work... temporarily... I held the X button upon startup and it worked and I then ran start up disk like it said to on the troubleshooting I learned from Google.  Thought all was well... so I decide to venture back to said site that's just like flash players like youtube, but with more geared towards young adolescences.  Things were good for a little and then the problem started happening again and more frequent.
I kept doing the hold X thing and it work like 1-2 more times and now that Kernel Panic screen doesn't go away at all and I can't boot up the MBP at all.
I tried doing the thing where you hold X at start up... no luck!
I tried holding down shift at start up to boot into safe mode and it still doesn't work.
I tried some PRAM thing where you hold down cntrl + option + p + r and that didn't work.
I don't even know what operating system I'm on because the MBP won't boot up for me to see the system info.
Anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it... I'm not covered under warranty anymore so before I take it into Apple and the use the KY on me I figured I ask on here to see if anyone can help me remedy this problem.
Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Mavericks can only boot in safe mode

In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.
Here is a copy of the log. If anyone can help, I would be grateful !

I have tried a few other tricks from the experts in the discussion boards (including removing all preference files that are non apple, remove all non apple extensions), still no way to start up the computer other than safe boot.
I would like to try and turn off bonjour, as it seems like a MDNSResponder Error. But need a green light from any of you experts.
I am posting the latest system log (on this one, I forgot to unplug the printer)
    Please help !!!

  • Can't boot iBook with install disc

    Hi All,
I've inherited an old clamshell iBook that freezes every time I try to boot from the install disc.
The iBook came with 0S9.2 installed and everything seemed to be working OK. I then tried to upgrade it using a retail Jaguar disc and it froze on booting up. Now it won't even load OS9 but instead gives me a blinking folder with a question mark.
When I try to install from the Jaguar boot disc, I get the Apple logo and then it freezes right there. I tried zapping the P-Ram a few times and that didn't fix it. I tried holding Option key when loading and got to the screen where it lists boot options. I chose OS X and it after the logo comes up, it freezes.
Have also tried re-seating and completely removing the RAM. No difference.
When I go into verbose mode I get some kind of kernel panic error freeze and the keyboard won't let me input anything.
I reached the open firmware screen and it says Powerbook2,1 4.1.7f4 so I think that means my firmware is fine for OS X.
I unfortunately don't have access to an OS 9.2 disc so can't boot into that from disc. I think my 9.2 system folder needs to be re-blessed or something like that but have no way to reach it.
    Any suggestions?

Ok, well, I believe that in order to re-bless the OS 9 system folder, you need the OS 9 CD. (I'm not an OS 9 expert, but that's what I've seen online).
However, if you install 10.2 (or 10.3) on the computer, it should boot right into it and you don't even "need" OS 9 any more.
I'm starting to think you have a hardware problem of some kind, and the first place to check is the RAM. OS X is more finicky than OS 9 was with RAM, so do you have another memory module you could install to check? Or perhaps another clamshell (like was suggested) to try your RAM in?
Do you have an Apple Hardware test disk? My next suggestion would be to get one and to run the test and see what (if any) hardware is having problems.
And one more thought: if you can boot using the 10.3 disk, try running Disk Utility and repairing your disk a couple of times. Maybe there's a problem in your hard drive.

  • Can't boot from external HD with Leopard on MacBook Pro or PowerBook

I can't boot from an external HD with 10.5.5 Leopard on either my MacBook Pro or my PowerBook G4. I had a PowerBook G4 from which I could boot from either an external FW400 drive or an external FW800 drive. At some point, I stopped being able to boot from any HD, but I'm not sure if it was after upgrading to Leopard or not? Recently I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" and transferred all my files over from the PowerBook to the MacBook Pro during the install. However, even with the new computer, still cannot boot from an external drive. I have Leopard 10.5.5 running on both the external HD and the internal HD.
Is this a common problem? Anybody know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

That probably wasn't very clear was it? I have several ext. HD's, some with bootable systems and some just backups. One bootable disk was made with CopyCloner and the other was a clean format and only had an original install of the OS just to use for an emergency boot. They both booted just fine. Then at some point, they stopped being bootable. I have used the Control Panel "Startup" and also used the Option key boot and picked the bootable disk. Neither one boots anymore. It started doing this on the old PowerBook and then also refused to boot on the MacBook Pro. This is not the problem with the HD since it happens with any bootable HD. Something is going on at the system level and it was transfered from the PowerBook to the MacBook.
    Thanks,
    Bill
