Can't Delete RAID

I have 4 Discs.
Mirrored raid sets
One Raid Slice is 'System Mirror'
One Raid Slice is 'Data Mirror'
There is a lock symbol on all 4 discs.  Status is online.
I can't delete the raid sets.  I can't unmount them.  I am the admin but the Disk Utility says  "Deleting RAID set failed.  Deleting RAID set failed with the error:  Invalid Request"

I had this problem as well. I'm currently on Mountain Lion 10.9.2. No matter what i did i could not get the disk to eject in Disk Utility or delete the RAID set. I had created the 2-drive striped RAID set in 10.8, and at one point had encrypted the disk, then removed the encryption. Not sure any of that is related.
The log shows I got the following error:
2014-03-29 11:38:01 -0500: Deleting RAID “TMData”
2014-03-29 11:38:01 -0500:
2014-03-29 11:38:01 -0500: Unmounting volume for RAID set DC62E024-130A-4105-993E-D5A9ABB340EB
2014-03-29 11:38:01 -0500: Can’t unmount RAID set DC62E024-130A-4105-993E-D5A9ABB340EB to delete it
2014-03-29 11:38:02 -0500: Error deleting RAID: Invalid attempt to unmount a whole disk containing a partition map.
The only solution I came up with was to physically remove one of the raid drives (they were in a firewire enclosure). I could then erase the other drive in Disk Utility. I then put the removed drive back in. Disk Utility showed the RAID set as offline and I could delete it.
After deleting it I recreated the RAID and am currently doing a secure erase writing 1 pass of zeros to the whole drive (just to make sure everything is read/writable).

  • Can't delete RAID device

I have a software RAID 1 set up on 2 external 1TB FW drives that I use for my media files. Last week I noticed the RAID was degraded, so I managed to remove the offending drive, reformat it, and rebuild the RAID. However, I must have done something wrong, because I ended up with this configuration (from diskutil checkRAID):
    AppleRAID sets (1 found)

As you can see, I have an extra device listed that I'd like to remove. I tried "sudo diskutil appleRAID remove 70E230BA-1E58-4F91-AC13-436A476E72B4 0239E99E-EC79-4617-83A4-0222F330E2C3", but I get:
Started RAID operation on disk5 Media RAID Set 1
Error: -9983: Could not find RAID
Any ideas? I have another 1TB FW drive I want to add to the set, but I want to get this cleaned up first. I thought about just removing the RAID, which looks like it will leave both existing drives with a copy of the data, then recreating it, but I'm a little nervous about that option, and I'd have to copy everything back to the RAID since creating a RAID erases the drives.
    Thanks for any help!

I had a similar or maybe identical situation: my boot drive is a RAID1 Mirror that was setup (under 10.5, FWIW) and used successfully for a long time, but things seemed to go awry after a drive failed and I tried to use a good replacement drive to rebuild the mirror.
At this point, I was running 10.6.2 when the drive failed. After I put the replacement disk in, but found that in the GUI Disk Utility, it was pretty crazy: the RAID showed up with the missing/damaged disk presented as +a different+ generic (striped!) raid set! It was if I had a mirror made up of one single drive plus one striped set...weird.
It wasn't showing that way using diskutil in the Terminal, so I presume that this was a Disk Utility GUI glitch, perhaps just in 10.6 (I've replaced RAID1 members in 10.5 a few times and never saw this problem).
I went to the Terminal and tried a diskutil repairMirror command, but I forgot to use sudo, and that seemingly just made it worse, adding the new drive in as a "Spare" and leaving the "Missing/Damaged" disk still there.
To avoid forgetting to sudo every command, I just went to root by using "sudo -s", which puts you at a root prompt and you don't have to worry about sudoing commands every time.
I then tried to remove the "Missing/Damaged" UUID, figuring that it would then rebuild on the "Spare", using the command:
    diskutil removeFromRAID <UUID> <RaidDisk#>
but got that error message, "Error: -9983: Could not find RAID".
So I used the diskutil removeFromRAID command successfully to remove the new "Spare" drive, just to get it back to where I started, with one functioning "Online" disk and one "Missing/Damaged" disk.
I then just tried the disktutil repairMirror command again, and this time it worked perfectly and rebuilt just fine, even showing up in the Disk Utility GUI properly now.
So if you see this issue, I'd say first be sure that you're root with "sudo -s" before you do anything. I don't think that was necessarily the problem here, however, because from the first time I put the replacement disk in, things showed up weird in the Disk Utility GUI.
Perhaps add a new drive with diskUtil repairMirror, then if it fails, remove it and try again. Try addToRaid and removeFromRaid commands to fool with it until it starts doing what it's supposed to do.
My next step, had it not worked when it did, was to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and rebuild it using the Disk Utility from the top menu in the OS X installer. I didn't get a chance to see if that would work. You could also drop into Terminal from the same top menu (and you're already root at that point) and try some diskutil commands when you're not booted from the RAID.

  • I have a Bootcamp partition on  my Imac with Mavericks which I can't delete because the Partition Layout is greyed out and is stuck on 'Current'. What can I do?

I have a Bootcamp partition on my Imac with Mavericks which I can't delete because the Partition Layout in Disk Utility is greyed out and is stuck on 'Current'. What can I do? I was trying to install Windows 8.1 but apparently, this is not yet possible.
I was originally able to restore to my original Mac OSX partition using Boot Camp Assistant but then after entering Disk Utility and re-RAIDing the default RAID 1 to RAID 0 in the BootCamp partition (I suspect this is the cause of the problem but why was it defaulted to RAID 1 in the first place?!!!!), forever afterwards, I couldn't restore the single OSX partition.
Whenever I used BootCamp Assistant my choice to 'Install or remove Windows 7 or later version' was greyed out. Finally I went to Disk Utility to repartition but the Macintosh HD and BootCamp disk partition functions were also greyed out (even if I started up from Recovery mode holding down option, command and 'R' and choosing Disk Utility). BootCamp Assistant gives the error message 'The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition' with additional small script 'The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows', and DU gives the error message 'The full size of the Fusion drive is not available for repartitioning'.
What can I do to fix this problem? How can I make the Partition Layout button active in DU so I can change the partition to all OSX? I'm prepared to wipe off all my data etc to repartition and have backed up all to disk using Time Machine.

My problem is fixed now, thank you. It was caused by my changing the Boot Camp partition's 'RAID1' to 'RAID0'. If I hadn't done that, Boot Camp would still have been able to 'restore' back to the one partition. It was fixed with the help of Applecare by using a terminal and typing a command to erase the IP of the Macintosh disk (not the volume) as well as the IP of the Bootcamp partition (if I remember correctly), but then I had to restore the OS and all my applications and data etc which I had previously backed up using Time Machine. I haven't taken note of the exact command terminology used. It would be wise to speak to Applecare about this if possible.
Two words of warning, 1. According to the cause of this problem, it might be wise, after reinstalling the ops system to reinstall all extra applications one by one, manually, in case a similar problem arises again. Then manually copy back all data. Or the Mac user could use the Time Machine backup and then uninstall all the added apps then re-install them one by one manually. 2. Beware as after all this the user might not have the 'Recovery partition'. There is a small recovery partition (a few 100 Mb is size) which comes with all later Macs. After all this is done this tiny partition might not be there anymore and the user might have to re-install Mavericks again to get it back, or just install the upcoming update of Mavericks due in a month or so.

  • Can't unmount raid set

After a RAID 1 setup on mac mini Lion Server, I decided I need to change partition table.
Trying to delete the RAID set in recovery mode (booted from USB boot disk) the delete failed, the disks are listed as being "online".
Booted into disk target mode and accessing the mini disks via thunderbolt from MBP, I tried running diskutility - again without success.
using comand line diskutil gives me the following error:
    diskutil appleRAID delete /dev/disk3
    Started RAID operation on disk3
Unmounting volume for RAID set A8306D65-4E36-4C4B-AFFA-7B232AF9D005
Can't unmount RAID set A8306D65-4E36-4C4B-AFFA-7B232AF9D005 to delete it
    Error: -69886: Invalid request
there must be a way to re build a RAID set from scratch, I am puzzled.

    Hi BDAqua,
after I posted I did some more research and figured that i had to remove the drives with the "diskutil appleRAID remove" command.
after that everything worked as expected.

  • Disk Utility - delete RAID killed data on drives before server install

    OK. Here's the scenario.
I had a Dual 1G G4 with a fully functioning RAID 1 installed. So I attempted to do an install of Leopard Server. It came up with a message that said something like "OS X could not prepare disk for installation." After reading some forum posts, one guy said that he was able to install Leopard by deleting the RAID, thus splitting the RAID into two volumes. So I booted from the DVD again, and this time it reports that the RAID is degraded, and that the second drive in the RAID set is a "spare."
This seemed odd, but I figured if I delete the RAID set it would keep the section that had all the good data on it. That's when my world went to ****.
Once it deleted the RAID set, and the message came up prompting me that I would NOT lose my data, it went ahead and deleted all my data. Perhaps replacing the good volume with the so-called spare. So I have been trying in vain to get the data back. The one product that I own, DiskWarrior, does not see the drives as volumes. So it won't work. Anyone have any ideas?
There was not a LOT of data on the drive, but there was a lot of complicated web shares and a few IMPORTANT websites that I need to get back. And, yes, I do not have a current backup of the volume. I was riding the RAID 1 cushion way too hard.

It would seem that I have the answer, and I believe that this is a MAJOR problem that Apple should address with some kind of warning to its customers. The RAID set I deleted was an Apple RAID 1.0 set. Upon reading further into the documentation, I see that RAID 2.0 sets can be deleted, and the volumes split into two. But with RAID 1.0 sets, the data is lost when you delete a volume.
So, even though I was deleting the set in 10.5, it seems to have applied the rules for RAID 1.0.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=RaidUtility/1.0/en/s1ru11.html
I am hoping that there is a way to recover my data, but i'm not too hopeful.

  • DKA790GX Platinum, Unable to delete Raid set.

Back in mid February I wrote in with an issue regarding side port memory, this problem evolved to where the system would shut down even whilst in Bios. I used your wonderful flash utility to update the Bios from 1.1 to 1.3 and finally to 1.6 with no improvement, thanks again to Bas and Walker X for their kind input.
The board was returned and six weeks later a replacement arrived, this new board is now up and running with a fresh installation of XP pro and latest drivers from MSI.
The problem I have now, two of the samsung drives were setup as Raid 0 on the old board, when connected to the new board, bios changed to accommodate, from boot the drives are scanned and reported as ID 01 Mode 2+0 Raid 0 LD Size 639.99 Track-Mapping 65535/255/63 Functional. when I press Ctrl F to enter fast build utility, I am taken to the Bios setup screen? and not fast build.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I would like to format these drives for re use, can I do this in windows or must I delete Raid set first via fast build utility?
The fresh installation drive is disconnected during the above process.

You can't do this, and you can't transfer purchases between accounts. There is no conflict about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match (the ID you've been using for iTunes) and using the other ID for iCloud.

Only iTunes Support can potentially delete an account (which would also delete any purchase history for it, so you would no longer be able to authorise that content on a computer, redownload it, and download updates to its apps) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
Or you could just remove any personal info from it (e.g. payment details if you have any on it) and stop using it

At the moment you can't - just remove any personal info from it (e.g. credit card details) and stop using it. If you purchased any content from Apple with it (music, films, apps etc) then you will need to remember the account id and password in case you ever want authorise it so as to use it on a different computer (or the same computer if, for exampel, you upgrade the OS)

The email linked to that account is no longer active.  How can I delete this old account and use a new one?

Although your profile says you're running iOS 5.1.1 it sounds like you're running iOS 7 (otherwise you would not need your password to delete the old account).  Assuming that's true, and your iCloud ID has changed but you need to delete the old account in order to change to your new one, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

You will need to use that old Apple ID and password to update any apps you purchased using that account. So you will either need to recover that Apple ID, which if you forgot the password you should be able to reset here:
    http://iforgot.apple.com
or you will need to delete all those apps and repurchase them using your current Apple ID.
