Can't detect Cinema Display after new patch applied

A few days ago I downloaded and applied a patch to my MBP for its display.  Now I cannot detect my 27" Cinema Display.  What gives?

I'm seeing the same thing on my macbook running as a closed clamshell connected to an external keyboard/mouse/monitor. It boots OK but if it falls asleep I'm in trouble. The external keyboard/mouse will wake it, but only for a few seconds before it falls asleep again. The only way to get it awake is to open the MacBook and use it as a secondary monitor. Kind of irritating since I use the macbook in this configuration often. I've also set sleep on power adapter to "never" to try to avoid the problem, but the system doesn't seem to be honoring that setting.
I'm guessing this might be related to the "extensive graphics updates" in 10.5.5, as I've only really seen the issue crop up since 10.5.5.

  • Can I use an old Apple Cinema Display with new Mac Mini?

Currently I have an early PowerMac G5 that I bought used recently. It came with an Apple Cinema Display (20", I think - resolution is 1680x1050). The Cinema Display does not have a separate power cord so it must be powered from the PowerMac. My question is this - would I be able to use this monitor with a new Mac Mini - would it be able to power it the same as the PowerMac is currently.
Thanks in advance for your help. This is the first Mac I have owned since a "Fat Mac" many years ago (one of those with the 9" black and white screen).

Are you sure you have a 20" CINEMA display? I have 2x 20" CINEMA displays and both have their own power cord (and power brick). Maybe yours is a STUDIO display??? IDK if STUDIO displays worked that way or not, I've never owned one. Anyways, I have a 20" CINEMA display connected to my new Mac mini (early 2009) via the MiniDVI>DVI adapter and it works fine but is powered through the power cord though. I too have a PowerMac G5 (quad) but my PowerMac cannot power the displays without them being plugged in via their power cords. I am thinking you must have a STUDIO display or maybe there was an earlier version of the CINEMA display that could work that way.... idk. Mine were purchased at the end of 2005 along with the PowerMac G5 (quad).

  • Can the apple cinema display hook up to a new MacBook (i.e. is there an appropriate adaptor)?

Is there an appropriate adaptor to hook the new MacBook (USB-C port) to the Cinema Display?

The Apple HDMI adapter allows the Macbook to be charged while it is using an external display (via HDMI)
Even if an Apple Thunderbolt display was compatible with the Macbook video output  you would not have all of the other docking features of the TB display available to the Macbook (extra USB ports, charging etc).
BTW - there is another discussion about TB displays:

  • Using old 20" Cinema Display on new Macbook Pro

    Hi all
I have a new Macbook Pro runing OS X 10.7. I want to connect it to my old 20" Cinema display (aluminium one that I bought with a G5 around 7 years ago). I've got got the Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor, but this doesn't seem to work - it won't detect the display. Any clues?
    Thanks in advance

Does your Displays system preference show an Arrangement tab? If not there there is something wrong with the connections or the display itself.  Nothing further can be done on your computer if the Displays preferences don't detect the presence of the display and that would be indicated by having the Arrangement tab showing both screens.
Check yiour connections, especially the mini-displayport connection.  Make sure it is firmly pushed in.  They can look like they are fully inserted but actually aren't.

  • Not detecting external display after waking up MBP from sleep mode

I am a recent owner of a MBP and enjoying it. However, one problem that I can't seem to find a solution to is the external display problem after sleep mode.
When I first boot up the Mac and plug in my Dell external monitor via the mini adapter, there is no problem with detection or display. However, every time I put the MBP in sleep mode and then wake it up again, the external monitor does not "wake" up and my MBP only displays my normal screen on the Mac.
I tried to 'Detect Displays' to no avail and the only solution is unplugging the mini connection and plugging it back into the MBP for the MBP to re-detect the external monitor.
Although this is a quick fix in itself, I do not want to wear out the mini port by doing this every timeI come out of sleep mode. Any solutions so that the external monitor will detect the MBP waking up from sleep and display properly? Thanks!

    And same problem here.
Using a MBP 2.66 i7 with a Dell 3008WFP that's connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. It works some of the time but once in a while (only been using the new MBP for a couple of days now) the monitor won't come out of sleep mode. Turning it off/on causes OS X to completely ignore the monitor. I was able to get this setup to work again by pressing 'Detect Displays' in the System Preferences pane but most of the times that doesn't help. The only sure way to get the monitor working again is by booting into Windows through Bootcamp, Windows is able to use the monitor, if I reboot after that OS X sees the monitor again.
Also saw a magenta line/stripe on the left side of my monitor and the monitor sometimes makes a buzzing sound when connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. That's what you get by using bleeding edge tech I guess :\ Only alternative is buying the mini-DP to dual-DVI connector but paying $99 just to be able to use an external monitor is rather insane. Besides that lots of users are having problems with this adapter.

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • Using 2005 30" Cinema display with new mac pro

I will order a new MacPro to replace my Mac Pro 1.1 immediately upon release.  I also have a 30" Cinema Display version 2005.  It's interface with the existing Mac Pro is three cable hookup:  DVI, USB and Firewire 400.  By connecting the Cinema display using a bunch of adaptors, can I make the display work with the new MacPro until a good 4K display is out there?  Alternatively, I'll have to buy a new display from current technology or the few 4k's available today.
    Thanks for your help.

yes, use a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter plugged into the ThunderBolt port. The HDMI port has limited resolutions, not including 1560 by 1600 best for 30" cinema display.

  • Can't Use Cinema Display 30-inch With G5 (AGP)

After making a trip to the Apple store to make sure we got what we needed, and because we needed a monitor ASAP, we brought home a 30-inch cinema display. The people at the store assured us that even though they didn't carry it, we could easily find a graphics card that would support this monitor on a G5 that has only AGP and PCI. Turns out they were wrong. After spending most of the day, between the hour drive each way to the store and lots of searching on the Internet, we finally came to the conclusion that we need to return the monitor. There are currently no available AGP or PCI cards that support the 30-inch monitor on a G5. The few that do support it are either discontinued or out of stock indefinitely, even from their manufacturers. Even Ebay only has one or two that are certain to work (as there are apparently multiple versions of the Radeon 9600 Pro). Whatever video card you get, you must be sure it specifically supports Mac, since the Mac's video card requirements are apparently not standard.
So this serves as a warning, if you have a G5 you may or may not be able to use a 30-inch monitor. It is far from a sure thing, and definitely not something you can go out and buy and then just bring home and plug in. This was also my first (attempted) purchase at an Apple store (since we buy mostly mail order), and it was very disappointing. We got bad information, a product we can't use, and now two wasted 120-mile round trips. Actually the best advice we got from the Apple store was to buy another brand of monitor. We should have listened.

Thanks. I saw your post just in the nick of time. I read it while I was on the phone with the Apple store discussing their restocking fee. I'll have the card tomorrow and hopefully my problem will be solved. And I was also able to cancel my order for the other monitor as it had not shipped yet.
But I still think my warning is valid. This particular card is discontinued and OWC only has a few left. And as far as I can tell, no one else has anything compatible. So in the near future, driving a 30-inch monitor with a G5 without PCI-Express will not be a sure thing, and will certainly not be a one-stop shopping experience.
Interesting side note, the Apple store was going to waive their restocking fee because they could not find a compatible card for me. When I told them I just found one, they said OK and didn't even ask what I found or where I found it.

  • Macbook Pro no longer support Apple Cinema Display after graphic update 1.0

I recently updated my system to ver. 10.5.2 and after that I updated to graphic system 1.0. After that my macbook pro began to have several problems dealing with my 23" Apple Cinema Display.
1- if started in 'closed lid' mode it gives me a kernel panic (shaded screen) error during start up
2- if started in 'open lid' mode it boots fine but whether i decide to close the lid it fails to wake from sleep mode. It starts for one or two seconds and then it gets back to sleep.
So, I made a long time taking test during the weekend and after several "archive and install" I found that this issue is related to the leopard graphic system update 1.0. Somehow this update mess up the way that macbook pro deals with my Apple Cinema Display.
I hope that someone at Apple will address this issue toward a solution in a short time.
I appreciate any other experience in this sense by anybody.
    Thank you for any reply.

  • I want to connect my old 23" cinema display to new iMac 5K retina

I have just ordered a brand new iMac with 5K retina display & would like to link up my old 23" Cinema display to it so I can continue to have my dual screen workstation as I have done since 2005.
I could do with a little advice before it arrives as to what adaptor I will need in order to connect the two.
I am currently connected to an old 17" MacBook Pro so am unsure of how it will work with the new iMac?
The old cinema display has a 3-cable configuration (USB / Firewire / DVI cable) connecting from the power adaptor over to my MacBook Pro.

    Hi John
    Thanks for replying,
My current setup is this, my non apple router is accessed wirelessly by all my computers, ie imac, mac mini and macbook pro, ipad & iphones for internet.
My printer is in another room so therefore I cannot connect the AEBS (airport extreme base station) with an ethernet cable (I have intially in order to update the firmware and other updates) so in following the attached guidelines are you saying that I have to have the AEBS connected with the ethernet cable to the router?
I was hoping to wirelessly connect.
The wish is that all my devices can print wirelessly
What has happened though is that I can access the AEBS wirelessly, but it has disabled me from my router so I cannot connect to the internet neither to that network
    Any other advice
    Thanks
    Regards

  • IPhone 3GS can not detect SIM Card after upgraded to iOS 6.0.1

Guys I really need your advice please...
I upgraded my iPhone 3GS 32GB from iOS 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 a couple weeks ago and since then it can not detect the my SIM Card ever. Before it's been upgraded, the phone was working just fine, but now it's just like a gameboy to me. I've been trying to find solution and some stores want me too pay quite amount of money to fix it but I refused.
By the way, it has been jailbroken with RedSnow, tethered of course... and all the features are working perfectly, the WiFi is working, syncing is working, Bluetooth is working, downloading apps from App Store is okay, but only Mail and Safari won't work. I haven't got a chance to go to Apple Service Center to fix it yet, but the store I went said that Apple may say the same.
    Thanks in advance.
ps to Admin: I'm a newbie, so if I posted this in the wrong room please forgive me.

    Thanks Chris for your solution.
But just for you know that I bought Apple to get the 'after service', they should've warn the users not to upgrade to a higher OS if it can caused the phone 'dead'. Mine was totally unusable when it's just been upgraded. It stayed in the recovery mode and couldn't be restored. So I brought it to the nearest store and they did that to me, and eventually the phone is working, only it cannot detect my SIM Card...
The problem is not about upgrading an iPhone to a newer version of iOS.  Your problem was upgrading a hacked phone, one of the well known consequences of which is re-locking and/or bricking the entire device when restoring in iTunes.  You chose to hack your phones firmware and operating system, so you must accept the consequences of going outside the bounds of normal use that Apple prescribes and supports.
Had you not hacked it in the first place, you likely would have never had a problem, and if you had, Apple would have offered support to deal with it.  Your choice, your decision, your consequences.

    Hi All
After new installation of WCC 11.1.1.8 on Microsoft server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit EE UCM_server1 can’t start. (Please see trace below). WCC 11.1.1.7 run without issues on this environment.
    Steps:
    1. Installation of jrockit-jdk1.6.0_45-R28.2.7-4.1.0
    2. Installation of WLS 10.3.6
    3. Installation of WCC 11.1.1.8
    4. Schema creation by RCU 11.1.1.8

    8. Run UCM_server1 – failed
Still not works after patching MLR 1 for WCC 11.1.1.8 or upgrade from 11.1.1.7 .
From log files we can saw that problem caused by JniNativeOsUtils.dll file in “<Middleware Home>\Oracle_ECM1\ucm\idc\components\NativeOsUtils\lib\windows-amd64\7.2.1.1”
I replaced JniNativeOsUtils.dll with same file from 11.1.1.7 version and UCM_server1 starts work
I got errors during startup (syNativeOsUtilsNotLoaded and UnsatisfiedLinkError - you can foun them in trace below), but WCC up and works.
I also get error when trying to start SystemProperties or ComponentWithard utility:

    Hi All

  • Older Cinema Display to New MacBook

I bought a 20 inch LCD Cinema Display (A1081) from a friend. I have a brand new MacBook Pro (15" screen) that I want to connect it to. However, the cords from the monitor do not match up to the ports I have on the MacBook. The monitor comes with a DVI cable, a USB cable and firewire cable. Only the USB cable actually fits my MacBook.
What adpaters do I need for the DVI cable and the firewire cable? Do I need the firewire cable?
I'm a total Mac Noob so go easy on me. Thanks!

If you have a brand new MacBook Pro, then you have FireWire. It's just a FireWire-800 port, and that older monitor has a FireWire-400 cable. Adapters are available and inexpensive:

Your new MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt Port which will function as a Mini DisplayPort. So you need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Also not terribly expensive:

Those are just examples from one of my favorite Mac retailers. You can find many other similar items at other shops if you care to search.
edit: You don't need to connect the FireWire cable. It's just so that you can use the FireWire ports on the monitor. If you have no FireWire-400 devices, you can ignore it.
