Can't drag/drop mp3's into iTunes

Today I tried to drag a few mp3s from a folder on my computer into iTunes, but it won't work. I've tried other copying mp3's from different folders & drives on my computer but none will work. I have been using this method to import my music into iTunes for years, so I am completely baffled why it suddenly no longer works. Any advice would be appreciated.

cgphoto2, I had the same issue today - and that is my preferred method of importing music into iTunes as well. I first noticed that I couldn't import artwork into mp3s, and then that I couldn't import individual mp3s into iTunes.
The properties of the iTunes Music folder showed it was partially Read-only. I unchecked that box, but it didn't solve the issue. I then unchecked it for the iTunes folder itself, but no go. After rebooting, however, the problem has disappeared.
In Windows 7, I believe, like in Vista, the iTunes library is located here:
C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes
If anyone tries this, remember to reboot.
Note: incidentally, this comes the day after iTunes decided (after a two month hiatus) to allow me to update my hundreds of apps. The only other thing that happened in the interim was I installed AdAware.

  • Can't drag/drop music files from Itunes 10.5.2 to my new Ipod Touch

    Greetings!
I I spent about 1.5 hours on the phone with an apple tech and really feel like we've tried everything! Switching from manually managing music to auto synch and back, reinstalled ITunes, etc and I still can't drag and drop music files on to my Ipod. I am able create a new playlist, but music files can't be dragged into there either... Could it be a conflict between Itunes 10.5.2 and Mac OS X 10.5.8 that I'm unaware about? Any ideas?! I'm stuck!

Are you using a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse?  If you are, read this http://accretiondisc.com/blog/2011/07/23/itunes-playlists-dragndrop-and-wacom-ta blets/

  • Can't drag/drop MP4 files in iTunes 10 - Movies

Recently I have installed the new iTunes 10. Now I am not able to drag and drop MP4 files to load videos in my iPod and iPhone. Earlier I used to drag & drop MP4 files and load my iPod. But with this new version in Windows 7 OS, I am not able to load videos. Became very frustrated. Can you please help me?
    Thanks in advance!
    Prasenjit

I have the same problem! Is there anyone out there with an answer! I'm so extremely frustrated with this issue. I did everything that others have suggested on this community and others online. I used a converter (which doesn't even make any sense because I used to be able to drag/drop mp4 with ease without converting them before this stupid iOS5 and Itunes update). I renamed the file to m4v. There's tons of stuff I tried and still nothing. What frustrates me is that everyone is suggesting to convert and as I said I never used to do that with MP4's before. Why all of a sudden now?

  • Can't drag & drop from iPhoto into iMovie 10

Am trying to add some photos from my iPhoto library into an iMovie 10 project.  I access the iPhoto library and the pictures show up, but when I try to drag/drop or add to the timeline, nothing happens.  The little hand shows up over the photo, and even the + sign, but when I try to move or add it, nothing happens.
And, once I select one photo, it seems stuck until I deselect all.
Dragging of clips from the event library doesn't seem to be a problem.
Any advice or help is appreciated.

With a picture selected from the iPhot Library as it shows up in iMovie, if you select a photo by clicking on it once, then click the plus sign, what happens?

  • Can't drag anymore mp3 into ITunes version 11.1.138

I now have ITunes Version 11.1.138 but I used to have an earlier version 8 before. At that time I was able to simply drag an mp3 (from whichever pc file)  into  Itunes which also inserted the same mp3 into my 160G Classic IPod. Now with ITunes Version 11, it no longer works. Now I have to click in ITunes File tab>Add File to Library = Only then will the mp3 go to Itunes and IPod.
But that's not the end of it.
I now have an additional file in Computer/Local Disk C/ Ipod Music  with so far 46.3GB which I don't need since the mp3 are already in other Mp3 files.
Also this new IPod music file creates a new sub-file every time I insert an mp3 in ITunes & IPod.  The worst thing is the sub-file is identified by a title like F00 - F01-F02  and on and on. Each of these sub-files  (when I open them) show the track simply by 4 letters like CHOO or JDWT as example; thus no title or description like I have for all my mp3s  ie., ''Gary Peacock - Tales of Another - 01 - Vignette''
In other words I can't even Identify them anymore.
Am I doing something wrong or is this the new M.O. ?
Help please and Happy Holidays to All with Yours.

    Hello Ed,
Re:  your 2nd question:  If you mean taking the Gary Peacock mp3 and copy it to the Library Itune Folder = no problem. The full mp3 listing is properly shown.
But if you mean going to ITunes and ''Automatically Add to ITunes'' folder I can't see any such tab in ITunes tabs or sub-tabs.
Re: your 1st comment: Not seeing that phenomenon...... quite strange on my part. it does not insert by dragging.
I even tried to go back to an earlier version installation (after uninstalling version 11 and cleaning  registry) and I'm getting a message that it's now impossible to go back to an earlier version. Can you beleive this.
Yours truly, an old 78yrs old geezer with puter experience is bewildered for a first time and embarrassed.
I'm tempted to delete that Ipod Music file of some 46.3GB but am afraid to loose all music in my Ipod which is not connected at the moment.
I have now connected my IPod to my puter and tried dragging an mp3 file to Itunes it still does not work.

  • I can't import mp3 files into iTunes

Just recently, I find that I can't drag/drop (or import) .mp3 files into iTunes (12.1.0.50).
I did confirm that the files aren't locked.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

No mp3 files from any source, including iTunes itself, or just some particular batch of mp3s files from some unspecified source?  It isn't unusual for some encoders to produce mp3s that are not compliant with iTunes.  You can try using the application MP3 Scan+Repair (http://triq.net/mac/mp3-validator-mac-os-x) to fix them but sometimes you have to re-encode them.  Try playing with Quicktime Player instead and report if it will play the files.
Oh, it also isn't unusual that files do not have labels built in.  They are adding to iTunes but not ending up where you expect them to be.

  • Cannot Drag & Drop Audio Files from iTunes into Project Timeline

    Hello,
I have an iMovie (10.0.6) project open. I click the iTunes icon to fetch an audio track and it won't allow me to drag/drop it into the timeline. Yet it allows me to drag/drop other tracks from the same playlist (all from the same CD). All tracks are the same file type and about the same size/length, yet one of them (the one i want) cannot be dragged/dropped into the timeline. This happened with another iMovie project recently (different tracks from a different CD, but same idea: can't drag/drop one track, but i'm able to drag/drop others).
    Your help is appreciated!

I've having the same issue. Very frustrating. FFS Apple!

  • How to download mp3 files into iTunes

This question differs from, but is related to subscribing to podcasts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2124335&tstart).
Rather than subscribing to a podcast, I just want to download a story http://transmissionsfrombeyond.com/podpresstrac/web/121/0/TFB_020TheWatersOfMeribah.mp3, hosted at http://transmissionsfrombeyond.com/2009/08/transmission20. I did File->AddFileToLibrary. The dialogue box that came up was pointing at a temporary internet file folder. For the file name, I provided the URL above, but all that happened was that it downloaded 2 files into the temporary internet file folder:
    TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[1].mp3
    TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[2].mp3
    Why are there 2 parts?
I tried to drag them to the iTunes Podcasts area, then try to drag it to the Podcast entry in the navigation panel along the left. Neither action resulted in the appearance of the files in iTunes.
I tried to find where iTunes stores its files. It seems to be at "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music", though the folder structure in no way mirrors the 6 iTunes libraries (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Applications, Radio). Previously suscribed podcasts had corresponding folders in the Podcasts subfolder, but there were no subfolders for the other five libraries.
I dragged the two mp3's into the Podcasts subfolder, but it didn't show up in iTunes. I then emulated the previously subscribed podcasts by creating a TheWatersOfMeribah folder within the Podcasts subfolder, then dragged the mp3's into that folder. Again, no joy.
Surely, I doing something very wrong. What is the way to download mp3's into one's iPod Touch?

    Apple rejects my alias wrote:
That's the thing, it's not a subscription podcast. It's just an mp3 file. Entering a URL as worked for subscription podcasts, but hasn't worked for the URL of the mp3 file.
    No, it won't!
I've checked the links you provided and the problem is - they are not Podcasts (as you noted), despite what the text on the page says. In order to get these programmes into the Podcast section of iTunes, they must be downloaded _as Podcasts._ So why not get the Podcast?
First, let's get the Podcast, then I'll explain what the problem has been.
To actually get the Podcast; on the pages you linked, look for and click on the *iTunes/1 click* button, just above the donate button. You may get a dialogue box appear that says "This link needs to open an application. Send to:" and one of the choices should be iTunes - choose it. That step may be skipped and you may go straight to iTunes.
When iTunes does open, it should go to the *iTunes Store/Podcasts/.../Transmissions From Beyond* page, where you can select individual episodes or subscribe to the complete series. Make your choice. The advantage of subscribing is that iTunes will then do all the work of finding new episodes, downloading them and syncing them to your iPod.
An alternative is to search in the iTunes Store for "Transmissions From Beyond" which will find the Podcast. I've just done this, so I know it works!
    Now, what was the problem?
On the pages you linked to, the authors keep referring to everything as a Podcast, but an mp3 file _is only a Podcast_ if it's downloaded through a "Podcast catcher", such as iTunes. This whole process then keeps track of new episodes and can also automate the removal of an episode that you have listened to if you wish. (See the options in the Podcast tab of your iPod when you connect it to iTunes.)
If you download the mp3 files as you did, they are simply mp3 files, which will end up in the music section of your library, perhaps with a genre of Podcast. (To be a Podcast, the file needs to have a *Media Kind* of Podcast, not the genre. A Podcast can have any genre, speech, music, drama etc.)
As you have seen, even the content providers are mis-informed about what a Podcast is.
By the way, when you tried "entering the URL" - iTunes will only recognise valid *Podcast Feed URLs,* but not the location of an mp3 file. The enter URL option is useful if you have the *Podcast Feed* of a Podcast that is not listed in the iTunes Store.
Finally, in fact you have downloaded the mp3 file _three times._
    The first time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah.mp3,
    the second time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[1].mp3,
and a third time as TFB020TheWatersOfMeribah[2].mp3

  • How can I reload (refresh) my files into iTunes

    Hello,
My iTunes folder and library is in its default location and I do not want to change my iTunes Library to an external harddrive. I do however have files on an external harddrive, which are also part of my media library in iTunes. Every now and again that drive is disconnected and slowly the covers start to disappear, if I reconnect, then iTunes regards these files as still missing, how can I "refresh" iTunes to check if the files are present, without having to delete the album and dragging the folder back into iTunes, then it work. If I play the file then it works too, but it would take to long to play each file individually to wake up iTunes.
Is there a way to refresh?
Thanks for any and all replies.

I've seen this topic discussed for many years now, and don't think there is a definite method.  iTunes only reads files if you really change something about them, otherwise it relies upon what it has in its library database about the track. Things to try:
Grab files in a playlist and start to drag to another playlist, but stop before you do so and just let them bounce back into place.
Play files (you've tried).  There's a Dougscript called Needledrop that will just play a file for a few seconds, but still a hassle if you have 10,000 tracks.
Try Dougscript MIA an see if it tickles the files enough to get them to update.
Find some junk field in your files (for example, "show" usually is empty for music files).  Get info on a series of files, change the field contents so it re-writes all the files. (Yeah, not ideal.)

  • I can't drag/drop files!! HELP :( :(

I can't drag/drop files from one place to another, like across my desktop,i have to cut/copy paste them into another location.
It randomly change as before i could drag/ drop files, etc

OS X will move the file if you hold the command key while you drag and drop.
What happens if duplicate files are found during the move drag and drop. If you release the command key to answer the dialog box that appears, the file will be copied but not moved. If you continue to hold the command key as you click the Replace button, the move action will be completed.
To move files in Finder first press Command+C to copy the selected files, then press Command+Option+V to move the copied files to the current folder.

Are you able to sync the movies in the iTunes Library from the Movies pane in iTunes?
