Can't get dzen2 to start with xmonad [SOLVED]
I'm new to xmonad, and haskell, so instead of building my own xmonad.hs, and following confusing documentation, I took a pre-made one, and decided to customize it. It's almost perfect, but dzen2 wont start, despite the fact that it's called. What's the problem with this? dzen2 is called.
I'm running xmonad 0.9.1

TBH I'm not that up to speed with fonts - I know enough to get it "good enough"
I used terminus too though. My dzen2 call didn't put the font specification in single quotes, though I doubt that's the issue. I did specify it last in the dzen2 call.
Here's yours (top) compared to mine (bottom):
-*-terminus-*-*-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
-*-terminus-*-r-normal-*-*-8-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
I *think* your 12 may be in the wrong place - though I don't know offhand what every piece is.
I use xfontsel to select x fonts. Try running that.

I have been using Firefox for several years, and know how to set my Home Page by going to Tools/Options/General, and selecting the appropriate tab.
However, since the last update to 17.0.1, It now always starts as it was when I shut down, including multiple windows if I had them open. It is so irritating that I am considering changing my browser.Hello sandyn, see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved#Corrupt_or_damaged_prefs.js_file Corrupt or damaged prefs.js file]

Can't get flash to work with PulseAudio [Solved]
I have Pulseaudio configured according to the Wiki and everything works except flash. If I bring up a flash site, it takes over the sound card and plays fine, but won't let the card go until I shut down Firefox. During that time nothing shows up in the PA volume control. I've installed alsa-utils and libflashsupport and flashplugin-10. I also have my .asoundrc set up according to all of the sites that should force everything to pulse.
Any ideas?
Thanks

My sent messages in outlook for mac suddenly stopped syncing with my iPhone and iPad, all other folders work correctly. How can I get them to start syncing again?
You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
PDF files may also be found under another entry like Portable document.

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on? Thank you. Ed
Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5. The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over. This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1: Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L. This will jump you up to the address bar. Start typing where you want to go. i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
Step 2: Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website. You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it. If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website. This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'. You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3. Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note: If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip: You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'. The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R. You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar. To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac. This will open up another window. Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'. If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

The 'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H. (hit H twice) is my best friend. It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command. Example: You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command. Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph. It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph. I believe there are three.
As from the Trackpad Commands, I've copied and pasted below from Appendix A: Commands and Gestures
VoiceOver standard gestures
If you’re using a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use VoiceOver gestures. VoiceOver provides a set of standard gestures for navigating and interacting with items on the screen. You can’t modify this set of gestures.
NOTE:Gestures that don’t mention a specific number of fingers are single-finger gestures.
General
Enable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
VO-Two-finger rotate clockwise
Disable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
VO-Two-finger rotate counterclockwise
Turn the screen curtain on or off
Three-finger triple-tap
Mute or unmute VoiceOver
Three-finger double-tap
Navigation
Force the VoiceOver cursor into a horizontal or vertical line when you drag a finger across the trackpad
Hold down the Shift key and drag a finger horizontally or vertically
Move the VoiceOver cursor to the next item
Flick right
Move the VoiceOver cursor to the previous item
Flick left
Move content or the scroll bar (depending on the Trackpad Commander setting)

Two-finger double-tap near the bottom of the trackpad
Go to the menu bar
Two-finger double-tap near the top of the trackpad
Open the Application Chooser
Two-finger double-tap on the left side of the trackpad
Open the Window Chooser
Two-finger double-tap on the right side of the trackpad

Select an item
Double-tap anywhere on the trackpad
You can also split-tap (touch one finger and then tap with a second finger on the trackpad)
Start interacting with the item in the VoiceOver cursor
Two-finger flick right
Stop interacting with the item in the VoiceOver cursor

Press the Command key while touching a finger on the trackpad
Rotor
Change the rotor settings
Two-finger rotate
Move to the previous item based on the rotor setting
Flick up
Move to the next item based on the rotor setting
Flick down
To customize other gestures by assigning VoiceOver commands to them, use the Trackpad Commander.
Assigning VoiceOver commands to gestures
If you need a reminder about what a gesture does, press VO-K to start keyboard help, and then use the gesture on the trackpad and listen to the description.

Can anyone help I have just taken an iPhone4s but can't get it to sync with my Outlook calender I have downloaded to my PC the iCloud software but that does not seem to have helped at all?

My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes. I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes. There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE. How can I get this to work with iTunes again?
1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

Can't get WRT54G to start up, gets stuck at "checking computer settings"
Can't get WRT54G to start up, gets stuck at "checking computer settings" at 99% Please help!
If I hit the escape key it will go to the password screen, it looks like the password is already entered for me so I hit enter, but then it just goes back to "checking computer settings" and won't go past 99% again.'
Sorry but the last post mistakenly said the wrong number so I posted this.If you are running the install CD that came with the router, the behavior you describe is exactly what happened when I tried using the CD today. The CD didn't seem to work with my computer's fixed IP address (not in the 192.168.1.0 network.)
What worked for me was to set my computer to have the fixed IP address 192.168.1.2. Then I was able to contact the router using its web interface at 192.168.1.1 amd make the necessary settings.
The password had NOT been changed from the default despite the install CD software seemingly accepting a new password. The default password worked.

I was attempting to upload a video to face book and decided to cancel, now I can not get the quicktime icon with Facebook icon embedded to delete? what are steps to clear desktop?
A warm welcome to Apple discussions!
A 2003 iMac cannot support Snow Leopard 10.6; you'd need an Intel processor and that cannot be retrofitted to your Mac. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say for your processor speed? What does it say about how much RAM you have?
If the processor is 1ghz or faster, you can run OS 10.5; otherwise, you are maxed out at 10.4.11.
Also, are you running any commercial ("pay for") anti-virus or security software? They are notorious for slowing most Macs to a fraction of their speed potential.
A too-full hard drive can drag down performance, especially if you don't have a lot of physical RAM installed. If you single-click your hard drive icon and then do command i, you'll see the disk usage. Looks like this:
The value for "Used" should be no more than about 90 percent of "Capacity." In the example image, that drive has about 34 percent of its space used and 66 percent free--more than enough. Please post what you see for your Capacity and Used numbers
There are a few more things we might check but this is a good start.
Awaiting your information,

Can't get Firefox to start after performing OS security updates
Just did the most recent updates on OS-X 10.6.8, and now I can't get Firefox to start. It comes up and says that it is having problems (the "embarassing" window) and that I should try closing tabs. However, it's not responding at all, so finally I have to resort to force quit. I've try cold starting the computer with no effect.
Let's try this. You said you are trying to start Firefox 8 on the problem machine? Can you try downloading Firefox 11 from [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com], install that, restart your computer, then see if it still acts up?
If it does, try running Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. -

I'm trying up upgrade to lion, but having issues. Then icon is on the screen but it says paused and I can't get it to start the download
Ah, okay. This is a message that comes up when a developer has developed software for the Mac, but has not registered with Apple. Apple does this to help keep viruses and malware out of your Mac.
To be able to run this, go to System Preferences and the General tap. At the bottom is the option to change this. Select the section "All applications downloaded from:" and change it to Anywhere.
Just be careful what you install after this and only download from reputable sites (like Apple.com).
Hope this helps!
