Can't hear my guitar, just horrible 'feedback' sound.

Hey all,
I tried connecting my electric guitar to apple to record a few things the other night, no amp, preamp, just straight lead from guitar (which apparantly should be fine as the program can act as an amp simulator).
Set the sound to audio line in, selected real instrument, switched monitor to on, chose the amp simulation etc.
The system (in the sound menu in system preferences) recognises when I strum the guitar, but in garage band all I get is a nasty feedback screech and no guitar sound at all.
Is there anything I'm missing, or doing wrong? Any help would be great.

First of all: With an Intel Mac, you have to select the line-in in GarageBand's prefs, not in the System's. What you hear is the input of the internal mic run through a distorting amp sim.
Second: The fact that GB offers amp simulation doesn't mean that you can simply plug in your guitar. Probably your level will be too low, and you won't get good results. You have to pre-amp your guitar somehow to bring it up to line level, with a mixer or an audio interface.
To check on the sound, you also shouldn't start with a crunchy amp simulation, but with a no-effects setting - once you get a signal, you can apply the effects. You might be able to boost up a poor signal by cranking up the gain or output volume in an amp simulation, but only some kind of pre-amping will give you good results.

Check in System Preferences>Sound>Output that you have the Balance Slider in the center - not to the left or right. Also check the Guitar track balance knob - the white dot should be at the top.

Can't Hear My guitar

I know that there are a thousand topics on this already and I have looked through them all. I have changed monitoring on and off and made sure the record option was on. I have also changed the audio input in both system preferences and garageband preferences to built-in input. I am connecting my guitar straight to my macbook through a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. I cannot hear my guitar in garageband or, now that I look at it, in the system preferences section either. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because this is becoming quite frustrating. Thanks in advance for your input.

the guitar works fine plugged into both inputs of my amp and all four volume/tone controls are turned up to 10, which is all of the way unless you are living in a spinaltap world. so the guitar isnt broken.
i think the problem, after all this, might be that the 1/4" to 1/8" converter that i bought to do this might have been busted straight from the packaging. i really cant think of anything else that would be causing the problem.

I can't hear my guitar.

Hi, I recently purchased a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and I plugged my guitar in the Line in slot on the back of my iMac. I've follwed all the directions and my guitar is brand new so theres no reason why it shouldn't work. I went to 'System Preferences' and selected 'Line In' and I went to GarageBand and went to 'Preferences' also and I chose 'Built in Output' and 'Built in input'. I made sure the monitor is on and I set my guitar to record, and I still can't the problem. Suggestions?

I was plugging the guitar directly into the input pin of the mac. I do have an interface but for simplicity sake I was automatically assuming you aren't using any interface. Your guitar is essentially considered a live instrument, however; if you're plugging it through an interface thats probably a different story. Are you? If so, try plugging it direcily like i suggested see what happens.
If nothing happens then i want you to try testing the integrity of the wire, because you truly are doing everything correctly and it seems not to cooperate. Keep the 1/8th inch plugged into the mac, and on the other end try plugging an mp3 player (instead of the guitar) to see if the line in input works that. If you hear the music this will tell us two things, 1. That the wire is intact, and all of your settings are correct. And 2. that the problem is isolating some where in your guitar. Though i have a feeling that the wire might be dead or something.

My iPhone seemes to think that the headphones are connected egen they are not. So to talk to someone I have to put it On speaker or put in some headphones. I can't hear music and there is no sound egen i Get an sms or og I try to change the sound for sms!

The same thing happened to me on my old iPhone 3G. My guess was that water entered the headphone jack, and somehow made some short inside it making the iPhone believe that the headphone was plugged in. Pluggin and unpluggin the headset many times proved that sometimes it worked ok for a while, so what I did to solve the problem was spraying some good quality contact cleaner inside the jack, and voilá, still works fine after one year of the problem. Make sure you use a good quality contact cleaner WITHOUT LUBE, ( WD40 IS NOT GOOD FOR THIS PURPOSE) otherwise the lube will remain in the inside of your screen without a chance of cleaning it unless you dissasemble the iphone. A good quality contact cleanner should displace water and grease,and leave no residue after it evaporates ( IPA Iso Prophyl Alcohol, Hexane, or Heptane based products are ok)
The other possibility is taking it to the repair shop, and have it looked by an expert. Good luck!

My new ipad mini has sound but I can't hear the clicks or the keyboard sounds. Please help someone!

The sounds setting is on, and I can play music etc but other sounds such as the select click or the keyboard clicks are not there. It is a new pad so maybe some setting is on off or something? The volume button on the side is on full but still not clicks!

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? Clear the receiver
The iPhone receiver won't work properly if it's blocked or dirty. Here's where the receiver is:
Follow these steps, testing after each:
- Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as a case or film.
If you have a new iPhone, remove the plastic film on the front and back of the device.
- Check the receiver opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the receiver opening with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
- While you're on a call, turn on speakerphone. If you still can't hear, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try calling again later or from a different location.
Restart and update

You aren't attached to a bluetooth headset or other device for some strange reason? Or even an automobile bluetooth, I have a friend that has this issue with his Prius because even when it is not running the bluetooth is still active and connects to his phone.
