Can't name folders

Every few days for no reason I can find, I can't type in a title on a new folder or rename an old folder or document with the keyboard. The keyboard works within applications. A simple restart solves the problem but I would like to know if anyone has a better an answer to this problem.
Thanks

Hello Joe:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
If relaunching does not fix it, try trashing the preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restarting.

  • Can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder

I can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder. I've never had this happen before. I tried both using the new folder icon and choosing "new folder" from the actions icon. The only unusual thing I'm doing now is working with Spaces enabled, but I can't imagine that this has anything to do with the problem. Selecting and hitting "return" doesn't allow me to either erase existing text or overwrite with new text. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Same here --
I just created a new folder and couldn't change its name. Finder would give me "more info" (permissions certainly not an issue) and allow me to delete (and then recreate) the folder, but not change its name.
Problem came from out of the blue, on a one-week-old system with all OS updates. Also found this old thread, which also suggests a Finder restart: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8989639
So that'll probably do it, but what gives?
Not so impressed with 10.5.7 so far... first a complete system crash while doing no more than downloading updates (a few hours after booting up for the first time), then networking stopped working (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2003868), now this...

  • Can't name/rename folders

Very strange - I started a new folder, but when I tried to change the name from Untitled, I couldn't. It highlights and the cursor changes to text entry, but it will neither delete the name or enter text. So I went to so existing folders to see if I can change names - no dice. I also tried to do it via the get info box, but same thing. What's up? Folders aren't locked, permissions say read & write, haven't done any system updates the past couple of days. What's the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks!

    how do I fix it?
The cause is a bug. The solution is to upgrade to 10.5.
But meanwhile, you will have to restart Finder.
The simplest way to quit Finder is to press the option key while right-clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose the Relaunch menu item.
Read here for more about restarting Finder.

  • Cannot open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your Outlook data file (.ost)

Fresh installation of Exchange Server 2013 on Windows Server 2012.
Our first test account cannot access their email via Outlook but can access fine through OWA. The following message appears - "Cannot open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize
your folders with your Outlook data file (.ost)" is displayed.
If I turn off cached Exchange mode, setting the email account to not
cache does not resolve the issue and i get a new error message - "Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The file (path\profile name).ost is not an Outlook data file (.ost). Very odd since it creates its own .ost file when you run it for the first
    time.
I cleared the appdata local Outlook folder and I tested on a new laptop that has never connected to Outlook, same error message on any system.
Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access service is running.
No warning, error or critical messages in the eventlog, it's like the healthiest server alive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I haven't encountered this issue with previous versions of Exchange.

So it looks like a lot of people are having this issue and seeing how Exchange 2013 is still new (relatively to the world) there isn't much data around to answer this. I've spend ALOT of time trying to figure this out.
Here is the answer. :) - No I don't know all but I'm going to try to give you the most reasonable answer to this issue, in a most logical way.
First thing I did when I was troubleshooting this issue is that I ignored Martina Miskovic's suggestion for Step4 http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj218640(EXCHG.150)because it didn't make sense to me because I was trying to connect
Outlook not outside the LAN but actually inside. However, Martina's suggestion does fix the issue if it's applied in the correct context.
This is where the plot thickens (it's stew). She failed to mention that things like SSL (which I configure practically useless - anyone who ever worked in a business environment where the owner pretty much trusts anyone in the company, otherwise they don't
work there - very good business practice in my eyes btw, can confirm that...) are some sort of fetish with Microsoft lately. Exchange 2013 was no exception.
In exchange 2003, exchange 2007 and exchange 2010 - you could install it and then go to outlook and set it up. And when outlook manual Microsoft Exchange profile would ask you for server name, you would give it and give the name of the person who you setting
up - as long as machine is on the domain, not much more is needed. IT JUST WORKS! :) What a concept, if the person already on premises of the business - GIVE HIM ACCESS. I guess that was too logical for Microsoft. Now if you're off premises you can use things
like OutlookAnywhere - which I might add had their place under that scenario.
In Exchange 2013, the world changed. Ofcourse Microsoft doesn't feel like telling it in a plain english to people - I'm sure there is an article somewhere but I didn't find it. Exchange 2013 does not support direct configuration of Outlook like all of it's
previous versions. Did you jaw drop? Mine did when I realized it. So now when you are asked for your server name in manual outlook set up and you give it Exchange2013.yourdomain.local - it says cannot connect to it. This happens because ALL - INTERNAL AND
EXTERNAL connection are now handled via OutlookAnywhere. You can't even disable that feature and have it function the reasonable way.
So now the question still remains - how do you configure outlook. Well under server properties there is this nice section called Outlook anywhere. You have a chance to configure it's External and Internal address. This is another thing that should be logical
but it didn't work that way for me. When I configured the external address different from the internal - it didn't work. So I strongly suggest you get it working with the same internal address first and then ponder how you want to make it work for the outside
    users.
Now that you have this set up you have to go to virtual directories and configure the external and internal address there - this is actually what the Step 4 that Martina was refering to has you do.
Both external and internal address are now the same and you think you can configure your outlook manually - think again. One of the most lovely features of Outlook Anywhere, and the reason why I had never used it in the past is that it requires a TRUSTED
    certificate.
See so it's not that exchange 2013 requires a trusted certificate - it's that exchange 2013 lacks the feature that was there since Windows 2000 and Exchange 5.5.
So it's time for you to install an Active Direction Certificate Authority. Refer to this wonderful article for exact steps - http://careexchange.in/how-to-install-certificate-authority-on-windows-server-2012/
Now even after you do that - it won't work because you have to add the base private key certificate, which you can download now from your internal certsrv site, to Default Domain Policy (AND yes some people claim NEVER mess with the Default Domain Policy,
always make an addition one... it's up to you - I don't see direct harm if you know what you want to accomplish) see this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738131%28v=ws.10%29.aspx if you want to know exact steps.
This is the moment of ZEN! :) Do you feel the excitement? After all it is your first time. Before we get too excited lets first request and then install the certificate to actual Exchange via the gui and assign it to all the services you can (IIS, SMTP and
there is a 3rd - I forgot, but you get the idea).
Now go to your client machine where you have the outlook open, browse to your exchange server via https://exchang2013/ in IE and if you don't get any certificate errors - it's good. If you do run on hte client and the server: gpupdate /force This will refresh
the policy. Don't try to manually install the certificate from Exchange's website on the client. If you wanna do something manually to it to the base certificate from the private key but if you added it to the domain policy you shouldn't have to do it.
Basically the idea is to make sure you have CA and that CA allows you to browse to exchange and you get no cert error and you can look at the cert and see that's from a domain CA.
NOW, you can configure your outlook. EASY grasshoppa - not the manual way. WHY? Cause the automatic way will now work. :) Let it discover that exachange and populate it all - and tell you I'm happy! :)
Open Outlook - BOOM! It works... Was it as good for you as it was for me?
You may ask, why can't I just configure it by manual - you CAN. It's just a nightmare. Go ahead and open the settings of the account that got auto configed... How do you like that server name? It should read something like [email protected]
and if you go to advanced and then connection tab - you'll see Outlook Anywhere is checked as well. Look at the settings - there is the name of the server, FQDN I might add. It's there in 2 places and one has that Mtdd-something:Exchange2013.yourdomain.local.
So what is that GUID in the server name and where does it come from. It's the identity of the user's mailbox so for every user that setting will be different but you can figure it out via the console on the Exchange server itself - if you wish.
Also a note, if your SSL certs have any trouble - it will just act like outlook can't connect to the exchange server even though it just declines the connection cause the cert/cert authority is not trusted.
So in short Outlook Anywhere is EVERYWHERE! And it has barely any gui or config and you just supposed to magically know that kind of generic error messages mean what... Server names are now GUIDs of the [email protected] - THAT MAKES PERFECT
SENSE MICROSOFT! ...and you have to manage certs... and the only place where you gonna find the name of the server is inside the d*** Outlook Anywhere settings in the config tab, un it's own config button - CAN WE PUT THE CONFIG ANY FURTHER!
Frustrating beyond reason - that should be Exchange's new slogan...
Hope this will help people in the future and won't get delete because it's bad PR for Microsoft.
    PS
ALSO if you want to pick a fight with me about how SSL is more secure... I don't wanna hear it - go somewhere else...

  • How Do I Copy File Names & Folders From A Hard Drive To A Word Document?

    Hi Gang:
This may sound silly but I am having a herd time with the following - seemingly simple task.
I have data DVD-Rs with audio files organized into folders. Each folder contains audio files related to the folder name.
I would like to copy the file names and folders from a DVD-R and paste them into a MS Word file. I am just looking to get a listing of files as they appear on the DVD-Rs in their folders.
The problem is that when I copy and paste, the order changes (seemingly randomly) and the file names are no longer under the folder names. In fact, the whole thing looks to be really random.
Anybody know how to copy file/folder names from a hard drive or DVD-R to a word document and retain the file/folder structure?
    Thanks!
    LAHD

There is an even easier method with no Terminal magic required. In the Finder, select all the files you want the names of, press Command-C, switch to Word and press Command-V. Poof, your done.
If you view the DVD in List VIew, you can expand the folders you want the files for, then select all the files (and their folders if you want them too) and then do the Copy/Paste thing.

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

  • Can I create folders into iCloud?

Can I create  folders into iCloud?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm assuming that you are looking to create folders when storing iWork documents in iCloud. You can achieve this from an iOS device, by simply dragging one document on to another to create a folder into which they are both placed. After doing this, you can then rename the folder to the name of your choosing.

  • HT1338 How can I sort folders in descending sequence

How can I sort folders in descending sequence?

There are two display options in the Finder, Arrangement and Sort. They are both under the same menu item/toolbar button. A regular click brings up the Arrangement menu. Holding down the option (alt) key brings up the Sort menu.
Except for Arrange by Name, all of the Arrangements are groupings. It groups the items by whatever criteria you chose. Within the groups, you can sort the items by other criteria.
If you arrange by Name, you can't sort by anything else.
Also, with an Arrangement set, you cannot adjust the sort direction.
To control the sort direction, set Arrangement to None, and sort by Name. Open the List view of that folder and click on the sort triangle in the column header.

I am using Pages app but I can not make folders as instructed in help menu

While in Pages looking at the screen with all your documents, touch and hold a document until it starts to jiggle.  Then touch a document and drag it on top of another holding it there for a couple of seconds until a folder forms.  While things are still jiggling you can click on the folder name and change it.  And while still jiggling you can drag more files into the folder, or create another folder.
Much the same as you create folders of apps on your home screen.

  • How can you upload folders into Photos?

I am missing a critical feature: being able to upload pictures and corresponding folders into Photos. I have a vast number of pictures organized in folders. when importing these pictures, the folders and folder names disappear and pictures get randomly sorted as many of the older pictures have no geo tagging or time stamp.
in the past this was no problem as iPhoto as well as folder synchronization between OS X and I OS allowed to import folders.
this feature must be reintroduced, if not years of organizing thousands of pictures have been in vain. Or has anybody found a workaround?

You can't import folders into Photos.
Import a folders worth at a time and use Last import to create a new album from them.

I have an external server that stores all my movies and music, is there a way to stream it to my apple tv?
If not is there a way I can link the folders to itunes (without downloading files to computer) that will make them view-able for the apple TV?
If none of that works is there a way to get it working alternativly?
    Additional Information:
Everything is linked via ethernet cable.
I'm using a PC to set it up.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll help where I can.
    Thank you for any help

(I think the daughter got he better end of the deal!)   I believe if you change the password and user id one of the devices it will stop that from occurring. But I'm not the one to tell you how to do it; someone like "Illaass" (Illaass seems to know how to correct / fix almost anything!) will know how if you don't. Just look for the "cat" icon.

  • Can't name Sequences or Clips - Seem to be in constant "Timeline" Edit Mode

I'm having a strange problem. I can't name sequences or clips in the Browser. When I click the sequence to name it I get the standard box with the words Sequence 1 highlighted in Light Blue. My cursor is there. This is normally where you can backspace and rename a sequence.
However, I cannot rename or name a sequence. What does happen though is that when I type a letter corresponding to a tool like Ripple or Slip, then those tools are highlighted in the lower right-hand vertical tool bar. So even though I'm operating in the browser, FCP is acting like I'm editing in the timeline.
I've switched keyboards. I've cleared up 20 gb of memory. I've rebooted, restarted, and cleared my preferences. Nothing seems to work.

When FCP rescues you, all your good settings go out along with the potentially corrupted. If you have customized your interface, loosing all that can be a total pain.
On the off chance that it isn't a preference problem, (and with FCP not running) first BACKUP your preference files, then TRASH them. When you start FCP, new pref files will be created using the default settings. If this works, BACKUP the new ones.
However, if trashing the prefs did no good - i.e. you still have the same problem, you can simply RESTORE to bring back your original settings.
No matter what, once you have a good working setup, the BACKUP command is a great thing. Once saved, you can restore your 'known to be good' settings anytime things look funky and you will not lose custom settings.
I prefer FCP Attic as it gives me the option to choose which preference files I wish to save and/or trash. With FCP Rescue it is all or nothing.
    Cheers.

  • Can't restore folders from Time Machine after Lion

    Hello guys,
after upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 I can't seem able to restore some old folders from Time Machine
Here's what happens: I log in TM, I can scroll through my old backups, I can choose the folders I want to restore, I can click on the folder, but when the systems tries to restore it, it stops saying that I don't have the privileges to access file A in the folder (and then all the procedure is stopped).
Oddly (at least for me) if I try to restore just that same file A (and not the whole folder) that I should have no privileges for, from the same old backup, I can do it, but I have to give the system my password: It pops up a window saying something "Finder is willing to make some modification, can you authorize?"  (forgive i'm translating the alert from another language) and then I can restore it.
Has anybody else this problem and how can be solved?
    Many thanks
Ps: I did a simple upgrade on Lion, no partition, no blank disk, and never changed anything in my user preferences, it's always the same, administrator
Pps: Before Lion I could restore easily exactly the same folders and files I tried to restore with Lion

But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.
