Can't Observer Pismo PowerBooks with Apple Remote Desktop 3.0

Today I installed ARD3.0 on a Dual G5 2GHz PowerMac and went through the process of Manage>Update Client Software on all Macs on the LAN: G5 Quad, 2 x Pismo G3 PowerBooks, G4-733 and a Dual G4-500.
All updates were successful after enabling ALL Privileges of the ARD 2 clients. However when I try to Observe/Control either of the Pismo PowerBooks, the connection times out with a "Connection Failed" message.
I can access all the other functions, like Update software, reporting and Spotlight (AFAIK)
There are no problems on the G4s or the G5 Quad. All function seem to working as advertised.
ALL comps are at Tiger 10.4.6.
The only difference in the network connections is that the all the G4s and G5s are on a Gigabit Switch, and the Pismos are on a 100Mb switch - The Gb switch is up-linked to the 100Mb switch, which uplinks to the router.
Any help or suggestions on how to get the Observe/Contol functions working on the Pismos would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gary

  • Can't observe multiple computers in Apple remote desktop

Since upgrading to Yosemite when I try to observe a classroom of 25 macs the screen that shows up is just grey. In the example below I am just trying to view 4. It doesn't matter how many I try to observe anything over one computer just shows up grey. I have restarted and reinstalled to no avail.
Any help would be very appreciated!

The only way I was able to resolve this was to do a complete uninstall of Apple Remote Desktop with a program called App cleaner (http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/) After a restart and a reinstall I had to set everything up from scratch and now I can observe classes again.

  • How can I deploy my AAMEE without Apple Remote Desktop?

    Hi everyone,
I created a build for Adobe CS6 Production Premium for Mac with the serial number embedded, along with the current updates. All is well with that; however, this is the issue that I am having:
I have tried to test the build on a local machine (the computer I created the build on) and was able to install the package with no issues; however, when I try to deploy build onto a networked machine, it doesn't work.
I have read through the AAMEE Reference Guide and have read (if I am not mistaken) that for CS6, you can only deploy an AAMEE build through Apple Remote Desktop onto multiple machines. I have also read that you would need Apple Remote Desktop on all of the machines you want the build to deploy on.
If that is case, if I have read the guide correctly, what is the point of deploying the build through a network if you have to still install ARD onto all the machines you want the software one? How can you get around this to be able to deploy your AAMEE successfully onto a network on machines?
When I tried it last night on one network Mac with ARD, I received the error message for "Validating packages...". I'm not sure what that means because the build works perfectly on local machine.
Any ideas would help as far as deploying the build on a network without using ARD, or really, just a simpler alternative that works?
    PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can deploy package using any of these tools - ARD, SSH, Casper suite, Absolute manage, Land desk..and may be more but we have only tried these.
We have mentioned ARD as an example, but other standard tools can be very well used for deploying package. and there is no need to have ARD installed on all machines where you want to deploy the package, but only on admin machine.
can you please let me know - which client OS are you trying to deploy the package and whether the client machine is logged or logged in? please forward install.log if you are facing the error.
    thanks,

  • How can I improve the performance of Apple Remote Desktop?

Apple Remote Desktop is very slow (refresh of the screen). Hown can I improve speed?

Like Dave said, you can lower the colors. You can also set a lower screen resolution on the client your connecting to.
There are things that can slow down ARD. For instance: copying files over the network, Watching youtube, listening to streaming music, Downloading files, video chat, audio chat. Or an active time machine backup running to a time capsul.
If you have the option of using your wired network over wireless. And your wired network is faster; then you could try using the wired network.
If your computer and or the client computer is on wireless, you could try moving the computers closer to the wireless access points. Do the computers have 1 bar , 2 bars, 3 bars or 4 bars in airport menu?
Are you using ARD at home on a small network? OR are you on a larger buisness network?
If your on a small home network. You could look at your router to find out if it's 802.11 a, b, g, or n.

  • Is it possible to connect to a Windows computer with Apple Remote Desktop?

    Hey!
I just bought Apple's Remote Desktop program and I love it!
The only problem I have is that I can't just conncect to a Windows computer.
    I need to do this!!
I saw in a screenshot in the Mac App Store that the Apple Employey had connected to a Windows computer so I thought it would work just fine.
    Thanks!

Should be, though I have no personal experience using it. VNC seems to be touchy with ARD, so if Vine doesn't work, you might want to try another version. Or just use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac or a service such as LogMeIn; those would give you the same capabilities and probably be less fuss and bother.
    Regards.

  • With Apple Remote Desktop How can I change all the computer names

After a re-imaging session?. I would like to not have to visit each station and manually change the computer name.
Is this at all possible using ARD?

    Hi
I don't use DeployStudio and know nothing about it. In terms of simply changing the names? Yes. Clearly not in the same way. You could use what's built-in on OSX Server if you have it? System Image Utility allows creation of nbis with an associated workflow that can define workstation names from a pre-prepared list of MAC Addresses and desired names as a Post-Install Action.
This is fairly well-documented in the Server Forum and elsewhere.

  • Can't input Serial number for Apple Remote Desktop 3

I've just finished installing a new MacPro with OSX 10.4.8 and all software updates. Hardware includes wireless keyboard and mouse otherwise it's a vanilla machine. I installed ARD 3 and attepmted to input the serial number. The field will only accept lower case letters and numbers but the serial is listed in all upper case. ARD says invalid serial number. I tried with a USB keyboard as well but "no-go." Will someone please help me. Thank you

Thank you for your reply... I resolved this issue about 5 minutes before I saw your response. When I had installed ARD3, ARD2.2 remained installed rather than being overwritten as I expected. When I started ARD, it was ARD2 that actually started and it did require lower case serial number. I removed all ARD instances, reinstalled and it took the correct SN. Dumb Technician error. Thank you.

  • Timbuktu vs. Apple Remote Desktop

    Hi gang,
Timbuktu Pro gives me the ability to access an unlimited number of machines behind a NAT router, because I can change the port that Timbuktu listens to on each machine behind the router & then configure port forwarding on the router to point to each machine.
Can I do the same with Apple Remote Desktop? I'm intrigued by the fact that I don't have to purchase & install a client copy of ARD for each machine that I want to connect to, but sometimes I have 10 or more computers behind a NAT router that I need to reach.
    Thanks!
    Scott

I am not aware of any setting that would allow that like Timbuktu. I use both, frankly, for their relative strengths, in my gradeschool computer lab. But if it helps at all, I have the school router configured to I can reach my lab admin eMac with Timbuktu from home, and then I can work on the lab eMacs with ARD from the admin eMac, and I can also reach the PCs throughout the school (if need be) with Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection from the admin eMac. Works pretty darn well.

  • Can apple remote desktop be used to assist someone with cognitive disabilities to type on a computer in a different city?

Question:  Can Apple Remote Desktop be used to assist someone with cognitive disability to type on an Imac in another city?

You can read about the features of Apple Remote Desktop for yourself and decide whether it would be of help:
    http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/
I can't see how it would help anyone type on a Mac, remote or not, disability or not, but perhaps you have assistance in mind that I'm not envisioning.

  • Can't install Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.1 custom installer on Lion 10.7.3

Ever since Lion 10.7.3 was released, I've not been able to install the custom client installer package that I've made with Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.1.
The error I get is "Remote Desktop Client Update can't be installed on this disk. A newer version of this package is already installed".
I'm guessing this is to do with Apple releasing the ARD 3.5.2 client, but not releasing a new server.
Is there any way of me tweaking the custom installer, so this can be installed? Or do I have have to wait for ARD server to be upgraded to 3.5.2? :-|

I was able to download the ARD 3.5.2 Client and take the customisations from the generated custom client installer.
To do this you need to expand the Custom Installer to a directory somewhere (in this example I'll expand it to a directory on the desktop)
    pkgutil --expand CustomClientInstaller.pkg ~/Desktop/CustomClientInstaller
Inside the expanded package, there are 3 files which are appended with "_entries" which seem to contain the customisations that are specified during the package generation process. So, we need to copy these to a temporary location...
    cp ~/Desktop/CustomClientInstaller/RemoteDesktopClient.pkg/Scripts/Tools/*_entries ~/Desktop
Now, what we need to do is expand the ARD Client we just downloaded (3.5.2) and apply the customisations to it...
    pkgutil --expand RemoteDesktopClient.pkg ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient
    cp ~/Desktop/*_entries ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient/RemoteDesktopClient.pkg/Scripts/Tools
    pkgutil --flatten ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient CustomRemoteDesktopClient.pkg
You should now have an up-to-date customised ARD client. Note that I have not fully tested all of the options, such as creating users. It may be necessary to look at this post if the newly customised ARD client has problems creating a new user.
    Hope that helps

  • How Can I Control a Windows PC from Apple Remote Desktop Please?

    Hello Everybody
    Please excuse my bad English.
I would like to ask you, how could be possibile setup windows pc (XP or 7) to be controlled by a Mac with Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2
I think I have to use VNC, but how can i SETUP to connect XP or 7 to my Mac Apple Remote Desktop in the same LAN?
    Thanks a lot
    Giovanni

You can use ARD to remote control a windows machines, ARD is built on VNC
You'll have to install a VNC server on the windows machine you want to access
You won't be able to use most of the ARD features as they are specific to mac
You'll be be able to see and control the desktop and that's about it
You can also find VNC /Remote Desktop apps in the iOS store that will allow remote desktop connection from iPad /iPhone,
There is a mac version of Microsoft remote desktop in the Mac App Store

  • Apple Remote Desktop - connect to computer after their password changed?

I have a problem with Apple Remote Desktop which is driving me up the walls.
When I observe or control a computer, Apple Remote Desktop saves the username and password so that next time I'm not prompted for a username or password.
Problem is, when the password on the computer changes and I once again try to control it, Apple Remote Desktop simply comes up with an "authentication failed" message. There is no option to put a new username and password in. I cannot find any option to delete previously stored passwords.
    Currently I'm resorting to deleting:
    /private/var/db/RemoteManagement/ClientCaches
    /private/var/db/RemoteManagement/caches
It is extremely frustrating doing the above each time a computer's password changes!
I must be missing something. Does anyone have a better way of going about this?

    Hi Zachary!
Have a look at RealVNC at http://www.realvnc.com/download.html. Install this on your Windows computer and be sure to configure a password for VNC connections. You should then be able to see your XP system in Apple Remote Desktop.
Keep in mind that the VNC software is free (unless you choose to purchase a version with more features) but the Apple Remote Desktop client is a commercial product http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/.
If you need a different (free) client for your Mac, I suggest using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection client found here http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopc lient. This only works with Professional version of Windows XP and not the Home version. Or you can downlod a VNC client for Mac such as Chicken of the VNC found here http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Using Apple Remote Desktop to Deploy Filemaker Pro 10 /Create Filemaker pkg

I need to deploy Filemaker Pro 10 to a number of Macs in our office, all of them with Apple Remote Desktop installed.
I have the FileMaker Pro 10 installation file (it's listed as an .app) and the text file called "assisted install."
If I have these two files in the same folder, I can run them and it will allow myself (or the user) to install FileMaker with only a few "continue" clicks.
I am, however, trying to streamline the process by creating a package (.pkg) so that I can deploy the software using Apple Remote Desktop (I'm using version 3.2.2).
I am, however, a Package Maker novice, and am not sure if this is more pain than it's worth.
Is there anyone out there who has done or tried to do something similar to what I'm trying?
Is there another way using Apple Remote Desktop (besides controlling each individual pc to install the program) to deploy FileMaker Pro 10?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the suggestion. Since I don't want to spend money, I decided to go with InstallEase from LanREV.
As I was getting ready to write this off as done, one possible problem occured to me.
When FileMaker installs, it automatically puts in the username as whatever the current installing user is. You might not be able to answer this, but I'll ask anyway.
If I use InstallEase to take a snapshot of my system before install, then after, and use that package to deploy... is it going to show my name as the username on everyone's systems, or will it figure it out on its own?
I'm going to see if I can scrounge up a test mac to see if my theory proves correct or not, but in the meantime, feel free to answer if you already know what will happen.

  • Apple remote desktop not working

Just upgraded to Mavericks and can not use apple remote desktop.  I bought my copy of ARD from the store.  Anyway of getting this fixed?

    Hi ikarous79,
If you are having issues with Apple Remote Desktop under Mavericks, you may want to make sure you have updated to ARD 3.7, which was just released recently. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Apple Remote Desktop-client mac issue

         Dear all,
I have using Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2 on maverick,in that some of the client machine also visible offline, but i can take remote.
    i don't no why.plz help me
    Regards,
    Venki

Yes I've tried to ping the IP address and I get a reply.
I've just discovered this morning that the issue appears to be with Apple remote desktop.
The issue came up again this morning...I ended up shutdown ARD completely then loaded it back up, and guess what! The MAC address was showing up properly. I've discovered this is working for SOME of my issues. For the ones that weren't displaying properly I deleted the computer account out of ARD and then manually added the computer though a scanner import via single network address. The scanner finds the computer and it displays the correct Ethernet ID.
So I’m guessing there is a bug with ARD and its mixing up/displaying the wrong Ethernet ID of some machines....
