Can't run kde nor get to cmd line!
Hey,
I've just reinstalled arch on my laptop and it was running fine but i wanted to run kde straight from bootup so i changed my inittab stuff from 3 to 5 but i forgot to change the last line to run kde... and now everytime i boot up it brings me to an oldschool login with a little console log for "name" on the bottom right...when i log in as me or as root, it wants me to choose a Session Menu "chooseSessionListWidget" with Default/Fail safe and cancel being my only two options. If i pick one nothing really happens, and if i try to ctrl+alt+backspace to quit xserver it brings me back to the login screen!
so basically i just need a way of getting to the command line...
anyone have any ideas?
thanks
If you use grub, you can also append the option 'single' to the end of your kernel line, which will boot into single user mode.

Can't run KDE with OpenGL using radeon driver
Hi,
I'm running KDE on a ThinkPad T400 with an ATI Radeon HD3470 card using the radeon driver. I've got the desktop running with desktop effects using XRender, but when I try switching to OpenGL I get a pop-up saying...
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options."
I've tried tweaking the OpenGL options in KDE and various driver options in xorg.conf but it fails every time. glxinfo reports that direct rendering is working and glxgears runs at around 200fps.
Here's my xorg.conf:

The desktop looks great but I'd love to get it working with OpenGL. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.Unfortunatelly, this driver doesn't support opengl with your card. Radeonhd driver doesn't support either. You can only use desktop effects with XRender, but not all and some of them might be choppy.
The only solution for you is installing catalyst drivers (not recommended, hanged my system several times per day) or turning off desktop effects (recommended). In 2 months 2.6.30 kernel should be out with extra features and tweaks, allowing to use EXA with radeon drivers, so XRender performance should fly. Unfortunatelly I don't have any information about OpenGL support with open source radeon drivers.
I moved from nvidia to ati, after nvidia's problem with kde performance, but ati is not better. -
I've upgraded glibsc, filesystem and migrated to systemd. I can't load KDE after it. I didn't find any info about KDE and systemd, but seems systed is the problem. KDM and initializations works without troubles, but kde plasma and desktop doesn't show up. Black screen or wallpaper and cursor is visible. Some of my daemon.log:

Probably I need to show some other log? I'm not sure which exactly.I've dived into systemd and had some progress. One of problems was with conflict between udisk2 and udisk (both were loaded). As far as I understand KDE doesn't support udisk2, so I did systemctl disable udisk2.service. Now there are no failed units:

But it's still not working. Seems now it's dbus problem or so. What do I need to run KDE? How can I figure it out? Any wiki? suggestions? -
I am running XP SP3 and FF 3.6.18. I have been having trouble opening PDFs in FF but not in other browsers. FF tells me to update my Adobe PDF plug-in. I click in the FF list to update, go through the procedure and when I click on run I get the following message: "Internet Explorer script error," although I am not running IE and I have no other applications open or running other than Avast anti-virus. The pane gives me two options to the question "Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?": Yes or No. After clicking on either, the pane disappears, but nothing further happens. I have then downloaded the plug-in again, but when trying to run it I get the message: "Only a single instance of this application can run." I have tried downloading the plug-in to a different folder but get the same message. I have also turned off Avast with no change in the above. Now no PDFs open in FF. What to do? Thanks.
Thanks for your response...
I can wait. After all, it was by waiting for the release of the 10h version after the 10e version sabotaged my flash installation, that I was eventually able to at least get Firefox up and running flash again...
It's just frustrating to think that the folks at Adobe can't come up with a better product testing cycle so they are unleashing these problems on end users systems...
I recognize that there may be some sort of issue with my particular system registry. If so, I wish I knew what it was...but flash releases are the only installations I ever have any difficulty with...All of the other software I run updates without failing....sad to say...
Perhaps I will try running a home edition version of secedit (See here)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222 instead of the clean or repair install...I'll let you know what I decide and how it works out...
Anyway, thanks for the input.. -

HTH -
Hello guys, Please help me.
Today I got weird Problem, My Windows 7 Ultimate eventually can't execute any Windows Programs, such : Msiexec, Cmd, Notepad, Taskmgr, Msconfig, Regedit, etc.
When I tried to run any Windows Programs, the Message Box Appeared with this message : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
Then I checked my System32 Directory, I was shocked because All of Windows Defaults Programs appeared with Locked Icon.
Then I checked 1 by 1 Windows Program, for an Example : dcdiag.exe. I checked the Security Tab and I got this notifications : No Permissions have been assigned for this object.
Warning : This a potential security risk because anyone who can access this object can take ownership on it. The object's owner should assign permissions as soon as possibe.
Other Informations :
1. My Windows account Privilege is Administrator.
2. I've Actived Anti-Virus and Always Updated.
3. In Safe Mode Everything Was Fine, I Can run Notepad, Task Manager, Command Prompt, etc (except : Msiexec / .msi Installer).
4. I tried System Restore in Safe Mode, but I don't have any Restore Points. In Normal Mode, I can't execute System Restore.
So, How can I solve this Problem?
Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account -__-"Hi,
According to your description, it seems like a program which start with Windows blocked the access of these app.
To open Msconfig, you can boot into Safe Mode firstly, then open Msconfig and following clean boot process to execute the operation.
If there is any progress, please feel free let me know.

Can't run Catalyst - keep getting error
When I try to run Catalyst on my Mac (running 10.5.8) I get the error, "A file system error is preventing Adobe Flash Catalyst from launching."
We've been getting the same error with CS 5 and CS 5.5 on remote accounts on our Macs. Local accounts seem to work fine.
You might get some useful information if you examine the Catalyst log under:
/Users/[account]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash Catalyst/workspace/.metadata/.log
In our case, the error came when the server was unable to lock a certain file (~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash Catalyst/configuration/org.eclipse.osgi/.manager/.fileTableLock) on our server system.
As a fix, I'm going to attempt to move the file onto the local drive.
Don't know if you're having the same problems or not.
Hope this helps. -
How do I get printers back of line? Using bridgewith WAN running Window 7 Pro. Worked until 7 days ago. Machine running Windows XP Pro do not have this problem
Hi,
I use a similar configuration at home and frequently find that my bridge loses/resets its connection to the WLAN which causes the printer to lose its IP address. Sometimes my computers were still able to find the printers, sometimes it couldn't.
You can check if this is your issue by going to the printer and checking its ip address (sorry, I'm not familiar with this printer so I can't give exact steps). If the IP address starts with 169.254, then that is likely what happened.
Rebooting the printer should restore a valid IP address but the issue may recur. In my case, I changed the printer to use a static (manual) IP address.
I suspect that the difference between XP and Vista/Win7 is that XP is locked onto the MAC address of the printer while Vista/Win7 try to use the IP address. This is settable and may help:
Open Devices and Printers
Right click on the printer and select 'Printer Properties' (not 'Properties')
Select the Ports tab
Select Properties button
Check 'Always print to this device, even if its IP address changes"
Tell us how this works out!

I want to run KDE as root?
It seems that I can't run KDE 3.2 as root.
Anyone know how I can do this?
I like being able to run KDE as root, because I like the GUI environment for setting up new users etc.
I could do this in Gentoo.
Also I don't run it as root all the time, and yes I know about the security risks involved, but it's on my home PC, and it's what I want to do.
When I run startx from root it complains it can't find startkde.
Thanks,
SnorkelWell you can run as root when you log in (KDM)
It is not a good idea to run as root all the time....but then its your system you can do what you want...
Have you got
exec startkde
In your .xinitrc file ?

I have downloaded jdk1.5.0_06 /w Netbeans.
I ran the HelloWorldApp program successfully through the Netbeans IDE.
I'm trying to run the HelloWorldApp through a DOS window on WinXP Pro, but I keep getting
" 'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file "
I added the "jdk1.5.0_06\bin" directory to both the PATH and CLASSPATH environment variables; I also added the "jdk1.5.0_06\lib\tools.jar; .; " to the CLASSPATH variable. (I looked through all the forum's postings)
I still get the same message.
Can I run java progs at the command line if I have the JDK5 /w Netbeans installed or do I have to uninstall the Netbeans IDE first, in order to run command-line Java?
I would like to be able to run Java programs both in the Netbeans IDE and through the command line.
Any help is highly appreciatedAlso, if there are spaces in the Path to JDK bin directory, you should enclose the entire path with double quotes.
"C:\Program Files\Some Install Dir\Java\You get the hint\JDK\bin"Also, you should close the command window after you set the environment variables and then re open it so the changes take effect.

How many times can I run PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrad .... command
I'm getting VSS error in my eventlog -> application. I was getting 8213 and followed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734219(v=ws.10).aspx and
now I'm gettting 8230.
Meanwhile my backups not are running. I remember running PSConfig command when I first installed windows and sharepoint 2010 on this box for system backup to work correctly.
Now I run WMIC QFE LIST FULL /Format:HTable > C:\Temp\HotfixList.html to retrieve all the installed update to check if KBs
2460045 or 2687453 are installed unnoticed but I don't have any history of installed updates suprising eh!
Now I want to run
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent
-install -cmd installfeatures
just incase one of them have been installed unnotice.
How many times can I run this PSConfig command? How dangerous is this decision? You can run it as many times as you want, but it will take SharePoint down on that particular server (resets IIS, for example), while it executes.

Because of a problem, I uninstalled Firefox once, reinstalled it and it ran. I had a problem so I uninstalled/reinstalled it again. Now it will not run. I get an error message saying that firefox is running and you can only run one at a time. I have uninstalled multiple times and can't figure out what is running. The is only one Firefox installed and it is not open. What does this mean and how do I fix it?
If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then try to disable Virtualization.

I can't get my Windows 7 pc to recognise my old LG VN251 phone via USB. The verison software upgrade assistant runs and my phone is up to date. I do get a window that pops up that says I can either run the bootstrap or look at the files on the phone, but I cannot see any photos. Thoughts?
