Can't Separate Movies in Sceneline

I am trying to create a movie that consists of multiple MPG clips. When I drag the clips to the Sceneline in the "Drag Next Clip Here" section, they combine with the first clip in the Sceneline. I cannot get the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie clips to be SEPARATE in the Sceneline, so that I can apply transitions between them.  Why is this happening?

Camera is a Sony Handycam HDR-XR500 (an AVCHD model)
These videos were shot at SD (not in high def).
If the video files that you are currently adding to your project are AVCHD, the you should start a new Premiere Elements project and when you are creating that project choose the project tpye of AVCHD with 5.1 audio as Steve referenced.
However, since you shot in SD, I suspect that you have an MPEG2-5.1 audio file and PE does not have a project settiing that exactly matches. I used the SD Hard Drive Camcorder project setting.
I am using Premiere Elements 7
I think that version 7 is the only version that throws this type of video up to the higher numbered tracks. This did not happen to me with PE 3.
The Project Settings (though everything is grayed out) says Editing Mode: DV NTSC.  Capture Format is DV Capture.  I'm not familiar with choosing Project Settings. What else would you need to know from this screen?
See my notes above about making a new PE project and choosing the project settings.
In the Timeline, the videos that I have dragged into position are showing as Video 5, Video 6 and Video 7.
If you do need to work with MPEG-2/5.1 audio files in PE 7 and you really hate the higher video tracks there are some workarounds but none are perfect.
1 -- You can convert your files to Dv-AVI format: I was able to do this conversion with PE 7 and then make a new PE project where I used those DV-AVI files: others perfer MPEG Streamclip for converting from MPEG to Dv-AVI.  See this forums FAQ at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
2 -- There are some workarounds of deleting any currently unused tracks and dragging the video to lower tracks (maybe you can get the video to track 1 and have the audio on a higher track). Or the potentially risky hacking the PE project file.  I can find a link to some prior discussion if all else is not a good solution for you.

  • Can you separate movies from iPhotos?

Is there any way to just view all your movies in iPhotos? i.e. seperate movies from photos?
Also, does your movie data get stored in the iPhoto library in Pictures or in the Movies folder?
    Thanks

If I delete the new Movie Smart Album, do I delete all the movies in my library?
If you delete a smart album by ctrl-click and selecting "Delete album", the album will be deleted, but the videos will remain in your library. You should see this panel:
Deleting the album will not remove the videos from the events and any other albums where they are used.
The Movies seem to be in the new smart Album I've just created but not in the library...
Really? What do you see, when you select one of them in the smart album, ctrl-click it, and use the command "Show in Event"?
Do you want to delete the videos permanently? Then select the videos in the album and use ⇧⌘⌫ to delete them.

  • Trying to make iDVD with 22 separate movies

I am currently trying to make an iDVD menu that has 22 separate movies. I can only seem to fit about 6 movie (buttons) in my "chapters" menu. I don't have to have all 22 movies linked on one page, but I can't figure out how to add extra pages that are the same. For example... I would like to have 4 chapters pages that you can simply look at page 1, 2, 3, and so on. If this isn't possible, can you please let me know how I can get all of these movies listed. I am starting to lose my mind trying to figure this out.
    Thank you so much

This can be done by creating additional menus or submenus. This is from iDVD Help:
+_Adding menus to an iDVD project_+
+Depending on which theme you choose, the menus in your iDVD project can hold either 6 or 12 buttons. If you need more buttons on a menu than your theme allows, or if you need additional menus to organize the content of your DVD, you can create submenus.+
+Submenus give you flexibility in organizing your DVD. For example, perhaps you have several slideshows in your project. You can create a button on your main menu that links to a slideshow submenu that includes links to each of your slideshows. You can also create submenus for additional movies, extra features, and so on.+
    +To add a submenu:+
+Make sure the menu to which you want to add a submenu is showing in the iDVD window.+
+Click the Add button (the plus sign at the bottom left corner of the window), and choose Add Submenu from the pop-up menu.+
+A placeholder button labeled My Submenu appears on the menu. It has the default button style for the theme, so you may need to change it to match other buttons on the menu.+
+Click the placeholder label for the new button once to highlight it, and type a new name for the button.+
+When you click the label to highlight it, a light blue background appears behind the text.+
+Using the pop-up menus in the in-place control that appears, change the typeface, font style, and font size of the button name if you want.+
+To open the new submenu, double-click the newly added button. Notice that iDVD automatically applies the Extras menu style from your project’s theme to the submenu. Also, a Back button that returns to the previous menu appears on the submenu. You can now edit this menu just as you edit any other menu, changing its theme if you want. You can even use the Add button to create buttons that navigate to sub-submenus.+
    I hope this helps.

  • Why can't I move the "name" column??

This is a question that has been bothering me for a very long time. Why can't I move the "Name" column in the library (or playlist) view away from it's left position? It seems to be locked into place. I can move and arrange artist, album, time, bitrate, track #, etc etc etc to any configuration I so desire, but yet the name column remains eternally glued to the left side of that pane, never to be moved.
The reason I ask, is because when I organize my music, I don't immediately think of track names, I think of artists. Especially in this day of cds I am hard pressed to recall individual song names. At home my albums and cds are filed by artist name, not by song name (physically impossible, obviously). It's a natural tree-like organization... artist->album->song name. I want to configure the library view in iTunes to match this same logical hiearchy but for some reason iTunes will not let me do this one extremly simple thing... argh and double argh!! Is there any reason for this? Is there any way to solve this?

    Chad hello,
Everybody here has given you good advice so I will explain why the name column can not be moved...
Your Music library is a data base and a data base has to have at least one totally unique index field for each file... now it can not be the Artist as you can have as many songs as you like by the same artist... same reason for the album, one album can have many songs but the same album name... same for genre etc.
The only thing that can be unique is the song title... If you put the exact same song by the same artist the program will assign a unique name by adding a number in front of the extension for each duplicate .... example
    Song Name.mp3
    Song Name_1.mp3
    Song Name_2.mp3
So when you think about it the song name is the only thing that is different... one album by the same Artist may have more than one track of exactly the same length, size, genre, composer etc. moving through all fields except the name....
Now why can't you move the name column... well all the other fields do not have to be unique so you can move and/or remove these columns but if you could remove the name column you could end up with more than one entry in your library looking exactly the same.... you have to have something that allows you to separate them and that is the unique index field 'Song Name'....it could not work any other way..
hope you can follow all that.... take care... TP

  • How can I convert .mov files for use with other apps?

When loading movies taken on a friend's digital camera to my PC, the video files were saved as Quicktime .mov files. I am now unable to pull those files into any other software program (I want to put them onto a CD or DVD and play on external players.) How can I convert .mov files to a .wmv or .avi or mpeg?

Kodak Digital Camera QuickTime MOV Problems
After battling a number of serious problems with the videos taken by my new Kodak Digital Camera, I decided to write up this page so that anyone searching the web would find out the true answers without as much grief!
I’ve also made some other comments about my experience with the camera, in case anyone was considering buying a Kodak camera in the near future.
I bought the camera just before Christmas 2004 in the US. At the time of writing, it is a pretty good model for domestic use—about 5.2 megapixels, costing about US$400 (or AU$600 back here in Australia). From a company as reputable as Kodak, I expected no problems.
The first disappointing thing was that the spring inside the spring-loaded battery clip, inside the camera, came loose within days. It proved impossible to reattach it without completely dismantling the camera, which (despite my engineering qualifications) I was not willing to do. This would usually have been a warranty item, but Kodak’s warranty does not extend to other countries. I’ve since had to jam cardboard in to keep the battery clip engaged, and have taped the battery bay shut to avoid it opening accidentally when taking the camera out of the case. This works fine with the docking station (an extra AU$100!), but it means I can no longer charge the battery without the docking station (since you need to take it out to charge it). I was not impressed!
The camera takes good photos, and I have no complaint with that. The controls and camera menus are well-designed. The large display is excellent.
The EasyShare software is not as easy to use as it looks, has a habit of crashing, has a web update program that is always running in the background of Windows, and transferring images is nowhere as easy or quick as it should be. I’ve now uninstalled it completely, and simply copy the photos directly from the device. (If the camera memory is nearly full, and you just want to transfer the last few photos, then it’s impossible to use the EasyShare software to browse the camera’s photos without it actually downloading the whole lot through the USB cable—and it takes forever! Copying from the device directly doesn’t hit this bug.)
The capability to take video using the camera was a great attraction when I selected it, and, if it worked properly, it would make it quite a handy little camcorder in its own right. With a 512 MB memory card in it, over an hour of video can be recorded at Video-CD quality (320 x 240 24fps video, 8 kHz audio). It’s not full digital video, but it would still be a pretty good feature for a US$400 camera. If it worked.
The first disappointing thing about taking videos is that the optical zoom cannot be adjusted while the camera is recording. It can only be adjusted between video sequences. I don’t know why this restriction was made in the design.
The real problems, however, start when you try to do anything with the video clips captured by the camera. Kodak has chosen to capture the videos in QuickTime format. This is fine—QuickTime is, technically, excellent—except that there is no simple way to convert QuickTime MOV files to AVI or MPEG or VCD. The Kodak software comes with a QuickTime player, so you can see the video clips on the computer you installed the software on—and they look good. Problem is that you can’t just dump those MOV files onto your Video-CD creator (it will usually want AVI or MPEG files).
It takes some time to realise that Kodak have not even bothered to include any software with the camera that can convert these MOV files to a more useful format. This is a serious PR blunder, and anyone bitten by this is unlikely to go near the Kodak brand ever again.
After some web searching, owners of these cameras generally find that the best (only?) freeware solution to convert MOV to AVI is Bink and Smacker’s RADtools program.
RADtools is amazingly powerful for the price (i.e. free), but it hits two fundamental problems with Kodak Digital Camera MOV video files, that are the fault of the Kodak camera, not RADtools. (I know this because every other MOV converter hits the same problems—except one, as you will see below.)
The first problem is that the sound cannot be converted properly. When you convert any Kodak MOV files, there is an “aliasing” of the sound at the upper frequencies. This is a technical description—you get a whispery, tinny, C3PO type of echo to everything. It really destroys the quality of the video clips (especially bad when I am trying to capture priceless memories of my 4- and 7-year-old sons—I don’t want their voices destroyed for all time).
Every conversion program I tried ended up with the same audio problem. I concluded that it is something strange in the way the Kodak cameras store the MOV files.
Strangely enough, I noticed that the QuickTime player didn’t distort the audio like this. The audio sounds just fine through QuickTime. More on this shortly.
The second, more serious problem is that RADtools could not properly convert some of the video clips at all. (This problem only affected less than 10% of the clips I originally filmed, but most of those clips were very short—less than 20 seconds. It seems that the probability of this problem gets worse, the longer the clip.) RADtools would misreport the number of frames in the clip, and would stretch out a small number of frames of video (in slow motion) to match the length of the audio.
Again, I confirmed that this is a property of some of the MOV files stored by the camera. Other conversion tools also had problems with the same MOV clips.
After more angst, I found a number of websites in which frustrated owners of these Kodak cameras have reported the exact same problems.
It was only then that I discovered that QuickTime itself can convert MOV files to AVI. Believe it or not, it’s built into the QuickTime Player that Kodak supplies, or that you can download free from apple.com. The problem is that you can’t use it unless you pay Apple to upgrade to QuickTime Pro.
After realising that this would probably be the only way to get decent audio for these clips, I paid the AU$59 to Apple Australia to get the licence key that enables the extra “Pro” menu options in QuickTime.
Sure enough, you can “Export” any MOV file to a number of formats, including AVI. And guess what? The audio comes out fine!
So, the first piece of advice I can give is: pay Apple the US$29 (or whatever amount it is in your country) to upgrade QuickTime to QuickTime Pro.
From here, however, there are still a few snags to untangle.
The first is that the default settings for Exporting to AVI don’t give a great result. It defaults to the Cinepak codec, medium quality. This looks terrible compared to the original QuickTime movie. Even on maximum quality, that codec just doesn’t give good results.
I finally found that the best option is to use the Intel Indeo Video 4.4 codec, set on maximum quality. This creates AVI files that are 10 to 20 times larger than the original MOV files, but the quality is there. If (like me) you only want the AVI files so you can dump them into your Video-CD program, then you want to keep the quality as high as possible in this first step. The extra hard disk space is not really a concern. When your VCD program converts the AVI files to MPEG, it will compress them to the usual VCD size.
Now for the biggest snag: those problem MOV files are still a problem, even for QuickTime Pro. Unbelievably, these Kodak cameras are spitting out MOV files which have some sort of technical flaw in their data specifications. QuickTime is able to play them back fine—and that seems to be all that the Kodak engineers really checked. However, if QuickTime Pro tries to export them, then when the progress bar gets to the end, it never finishes. It just keeps going. If you check the output folder with Explorer, and keep hitting F5 to update the file listing, you can see the file getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger. It never stops.
That this happens even for QuickTime itself (the native format for these files) confirms that the problem is with the software built into these Kodak cameras. It would be nice it they issued a patch or a fix. I couldn’t find one.
Fortunately, there is a “workaround” for this problem. I found it when trolling the net trying to find solutions to all these problems. The workaround is to use QuickTime Pro’s cut and paste facility. Open the problem MOV file, then press Ctrl-A (the standard key combination for “select all”—in this case it selects the entire film clip, as you can see by the grey selection of frames at the bottom of the player). Then hit Ctrl-C (i.e. copy, which in this case copies all the frames, but not the incorrect data structure in the original MOV file). Now hit Ctrl-N (i.e. new, in this case a new MOV file or player). In this new player, press Ctrl-V (i.e. paste). Now you have a new version of the MOV file with the bad data structure exorcised. You can save this under a new name, but make sure you specify “Make movie self-contained”—otherwise, it will simply be a link to the original (bad) MOV file, which you are probably going to delete once you save the exorcised version. (You also cannot overwrite the original file, because it needs to access that to make the “self-contained” movie. You need to give it a slightly different name, save it “self-contained”, then delete the original and rename the new copy back to what you wanted it to be. A pain, I agree, but at least the **** thing works—finally!)
The exorcised MOV file can now be used to Export to AVI format. (I also keep all the MOV files on a separate CD, in case I want to reconvert them to a different format in the future. I figure it’s better keeping the exorcised ones than the haunted ones.)
So I hope that all this answers a few of your questions. No, you weren’t being incredibly stupid.

If you have a wireless network, you can enable file sharing with each and transfer select data from one to the other via your wi-fi network.
Or if you have an external drive used for backup purposes, you can transfer the movies that way.
If you have Home Sharing enabled with iTunes on each and a wireless network, you don't need to transfer anything unless you want the movie available when away from home.

  • How can I separate my daughter's iTunes purchases from mine (the paying account)?  Some of her music is dreadful and it keeps downloading to my iPhone.

Greetings all:  I've looked through the support communities and don't see this particular question.  I opened an iTunes account quite a few years ago and my daughter and I made purchases and shared home libraries and all was well.  However, as she's gotten older, her taste in music has changed and some of it is dreadful.   It keeps downloading (from the Cloud?) to my iPhone.   How can we separate her purchases from mine?  We have five devices authorized (her laptop, tablet and iPod and my iPhone and my laptop.) My account is the paying account.  Many thanks for your assistance!

    On your iOS device:
Settings > Music > turn Show ALl Music off
This will hide purchases that are not locally on your device.
In iTunes create a Playlist with just your music and sync only that playlist.

How can I separate my iCloud account from my sons phone?

Just delete your iCloud account from your sons device. Therefor open "Settings >iCloud", scroll down, and delete your account (don't worry, it will only delete the account from your sons device). If he also uses this account for iTunes and App store purchases and you would like to change that as well, then you have to do the same in "Settings > iTunes & App Stores".

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • Can no longer move or copy files between drives (not a newbie issue!)

Copying and moving files between internal and external devices, and external to external devices is no longer working.
*For the first time in my life, I get a "Circle with a Bar through it" when attempting to move or copy files.*
This doesn't happen between the two internal drives at all (though I'm worried it might start). It happens between two HFS+J devices as well as HFS+J and FAT32 devices. I can delete files, create folders, and in some instances where things are acting funny, copy to, but not from the device. A noticed side effect that is now happening is that I can no longer move drive icons (CDs, DVDs, HDs) to their upper-right hand corner position on the desktop, if they didn't start there. They don't drop there, just staying where they originally sat (under a list of desktop shortcuts and files). It does not matter if the drives are USB or Firewire, and this never happened previous to about a month ago.
I have done all the basic stuff -- verify/repair drives, reboot multiple times, mount & dismount, change connection ports, backed up-reformatted-and restored the smallest drive, fixed preferences (not at all relevant), Disk Warrior repair the devices, set all permissions to R/W, check all device related infos, researched on-line for a week... Nothing. I have even taken the devices to PCs, where they work perfectly, and as expected.
This issue is apparently either a corruption, or a bug induced by Software Update, in the part of the system that handles files and file structures, or possibly the _USB and Firewire_ interfaces.
I just need to know where all those relevant parts are in the system folders, so I can attempt to restore them from a backup previous to the last "Software Update," (to be sure. And to bring this one step closer to being solved).
A system restore really is not an option, as that would require nearly two weeks of re-tweaking everything from the system to every piece of software included (updating the system about 10 times via software update, reinstalling 90% of the actual software packages... and then updating those multiple times, looking-up all the serials that get killed, etc.)
I have to correct this fast, as we need to move the files from the work drives to the archive drives before we run out of room. So any help would be very appreciated... even if you only know where a few of the system components are located (it just might be one of those, causing the issue).
    ---TIA

    {The last link in this post is most relevant, except for your recent finding.}
The reference was to the User permissions, per each; as when these
become corrupted, the simple 'repair disk permissions' and other
basic duties do not find an error with them. That is because there is
nothing really wrong with them from that standpoint.
Another odd error can happen if one is resizing partitions in an Intel
based Mac, and also if one has or had a BootCamp partition and
wanted to reclaim space. But not always. Thankfully, the only time
I tried Windows on a Mac, the media install disc was corrupted so
it just didn't happen. That was Virtual PC and Windows on PPC.
Tiger brought with it the ability to non-destructively resize partitions.
However, it was not thought to be successful in non-Intel based Macs.
The discussion on that matter came up a few years ago, so someone
has undoubtably tried that in a PPC and reported findings online.
When file sharing between user-account created content runs amok,
then the system(s) will not allow the content to be moved or shared.
So, if any shared user-account created content (including drives
initialized or handled without permissions ignored, clones wrong,
etc) are not the problem, then how does one explain these wrong
ful action circles-with-lines, or action disallowed warning symbols?
There must be a simpler answer. Do you have cats which have
access to your computers in the off-hours? They do keyboard.
Some have been thought to have technical skills outside of the
usual coy and cute play-acting people think they are limited to.
I'm sticking to the cats theory for now; the time is 3:21AM here
and I only am up to get a drink and look outside at +5°F. calm.

    Hi,
I just set up new itunes for ipod touch but i just can not add movie file (mp4) to library in itunes. Please help! Thanks so much!

Make sure you're looking for it in the Movies or TV Shows libraries, or do a search for it by name.
Did you check if the format is compatible with iTunes (QuickTime plays more formats if you have add-ons)?
"but when I open that file with itunes"
This statement confuses me as your point 1/ says you can't find it in iTunes.

  • HT3523 I can play an .mov file but cannot open it to move it to another drive/disc/etc. When we try to open it, we get a message that says "The movie file for "beanmine.mov" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."

We can play a .mov file (a full-length film created in final cut pro) but cannot actually open it in QuickTime. We get the error message saying that a file is missing, and the movie can't play properly without the file. The thing is, we can play the film, we just can't open it to move it to another drive. Help?
Also, can the lost file (which was deleted) be recovered from a Mac HD or an external hard drive?

Sounds like you created a "Reference" file here. I.e., a "Reference" file is a file that tells the player how to play the data contained in a "Resource" file. When you try to open the "Reference" file in the QT Player app, the first thing the player does is check to see if the "Resource" data file is is still available where it is supposed to be. (I.e., moving/deleting the resource file or moving reference file without moving the resource file to maintain the relative path between the two will generate the error message you mentioned.)
Also, can the lost file (which was deleted) be recovered from a Mac HD or an external hard drive?
That depends. Deleting a file does not actually erase the data immediately. Instead, the operating system just tells the system directory that the space containing the movie data is available for reuse if/when needed. As time passes, the chance that some of the data sectors will be re-written by other data continuously increases. To restore the file normally requires use of a special utility that both locates and restores all of the linked sectors containing the "deleted" movie data in their correct order. Other methods of restoring files would depend on the software you routinely have active on your system. For instance, do you use "TimeMachine?" or orther software that automatically backs up your data periodically? If so, then follow the instructions for your particular application to recover a deleted file.

  • Randomly Apple TV can't play Movies/Tv shows and music.

I've seen other people having problems with this issue but with all my searching, have not found an answer and thought I'd share my experience in case someone has a solution or suggestion.
Our cable modem service comes into an access pannel in the bedroom closet. It goes to the Linksys WRT54G router, then to a hub which sends out to all the rooms in our house. Our house is new and pre-wired for ethernet in each room. It comes in the office, goes into another hub and then to the Mac Mini I have and to a NAS Lacie storage drive where all my movies, music and photos are at. We stream everything and only synk photos on the Apple TV.
Over the last couple of days, the Apple TV can't play movies or music for some reason. The errors I get with Movies/TV is "The selected video cannot be played." The format was not recognized. With music the message is "Apple TV cannot play the current song." I know all the movies and music work because a day before I just played I AM LEGEND and it worked perfectly.
I've got a couple of theories and wanted to float them by everyone. I use a Harmony 880 remote and when I select Apple TV, it turns on the ATV and then sets the inputs on the other items. When I'm done and select watch TV, it turns ATV off. Should the ATV stay on all the time? Could this be causing the problem?
I've restarted the ATV, the Mac Mini, the hubs, the cable modem, the router. Nothing brings it back. But if it sits for a while, a couple hours or so, then it's back. However, it just stops playing for no reason and the next day it might not work again.
I'm running iTunes 7.6.2 and I checked the ATV and iTunes and both say they are up to date on their software.
I could really use some help here. The frustrating part is the kids want to watch one of their movies for the 700th time and it won't play many time.
    Thanks everyone.
    John
    I use a Harmony 880 (I believe) remote.

Oops----thinking of the light on the Airport!!! =-)
The status light is gray, so it is not setting off any "alarms", everything else is working, but when I go to watch a movie, rented or owned, it times out and resets itself. I ran a diagnostic and it said everything was working properly, I reset to factory settings and still had the same problem, and even reset the Airport to make sure it was not just the connection.
At a complete loss as to any other ideas to try to get her up and running again. No way am I going anywhere near an Apple Store with all the iPad hype that is out right now!!!!!!
