Can't share files in public folder

Hi,
After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, I can't seem to share my files in my Macbook Air's public folder to other computers that access it.
Normally, my Windows XP computer would access the MBA's public folder and copy the files from it.
But after upgrading, I can still access and see the files on the MBA's public folder but I cannot copy them. When I try, it displays this error :
"   Cannot copy MYFILESNAME: The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect  "
Any ideas on what I could do?
Thanks

I think i know whats going on. You are trying to share a folder somewhere inside your home directory, correct? What your doing is a security no-no, but I agree it should be allowed. Here's the problem, you need to give 'everyone' search privs all the way up the directory hierarchy (all the way up to the volume) in order for guests to be able to see the share point in your home directory. By default, all directories in your home directory (i.e. Desktop, Documents, Movies etc, except for Public) do not have 'everyone' set with search privs (everyone is set to No Access). When you create a sharepoint in a directory it automagically adds an ACE to the folder all the way up the folder hierarchy giving all your local (and Sharing-Only) users search privs, but it doesn't cover Guest as you've noticed.
So you have two options, either create a Sharing-Only user for "Guests" to use and have people use that, or grant 'everyone' search privs on the folder in your home directory (i.e. Desktop) that doesn't have search privs already set.
I would recommend going the Sharing-Only user route. You can set one up via the Accounts Pref pane, as described in the Macfixit article today. If you don't want to do that, and really want to give anyone (and I do mean anyone) who gets on your Network access to that directory (Guests), you can use Terminal to give just search privs (you don't want to give read privs to 'everyone' on any folder in your home directory). you can do it by running this command in the Terminal:
chmod o+x ~/<folder in home directory>
So if you create a folder on your Desktop (call it 'foo'), make 'foo' a shared folder (via Shared Pref Pane or Info Window, doesn't make a difference), you would then have to run:
chmod o+x ~/Desktop
in order for foo to appear for guest users. Make sense? Hope that solves your problem.

  • Can't share anything but Public folder?

    I've created a folder and turned on file sharing. In System Preferences -> Sharing, this and my Public Folder appear as shared folders, but other users on my network can only see the Public folder. I've checked that "everyone" can "read and write" to this new folder but no one can see it.
    Any ideas?

    have a macbook pro, looking at getting an iMac for home, can i share files easily i.e through a thunderbolt cable? dont want to use dropbox as it will take too long, need direct access to my macbook via the imac

    Assuming you have a wireless network at home, just use file sharing. System Preferences / Sharing. Choose a folder you want to share and you're done.

  • How can I sort files in a folder by name?

    How can I sort files in a folder by name? iFS first sort files that starts with upper-case letter and then files with lower-case letter.
    Like:
    A_file
    B_file
    a_file
    b_file
    I want:
    A-file
    a_file
    B_file
    b_file
    This doesn't help:
    String[] sort_attributes = {"NAME"};
    boolean [] sort_orders = {true};
    SortSpecification sort = new SortSpecification(sort_attributes, sort_orders);
    currentFolder.setSortSpecification(sort);
    Do I have to get all items in a folder and then sort them?
    /Elin

    I do not think there is a way to do that without add-ons
    There are a couple of workarounds I am aware of
    * Add the bookmarks manually in the bookmarks library and choose the position. That is using Show all bookmarks -> open required folder -> select a position and right click -> add new bookmark <br />Rather a slow and clumsy process
    * Sort a folder and copy it. If you sort the folder contents then copy and paste them they remain in that order when pasted.
    There are add-ons but I have not tried them. For example
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/simplesort-bookmarks/
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/
    There will be others available and take note of the advice to backup bookmarks manaully.

    Which AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) are you discussing? The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS supports the direct connection of USB hard drives. The previous round 802.11b/g AEBS does not have that capability. I have a feeling that you are asking about the new one but this is the discussion area for the old one.
    The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS allows you to share files directly from the connected USB drive. It doesn't matter what the files are so you can store your iTunes library there and get access wirelessly.
    The round 802.11b/g AEBS doesn't have this ability.

    I recently changed the Contact form that we were using back to the default IPM.Contact. I did this so that it  would be consistent for only a few of us had a custom contact template to use and it made it difficult to share contact information. After
    changing the contact default back to IPM.Contact and changing all the contacts to reflect the default Message class, no can add a contact to the Public Folder contact file. I have tried several different setting for the permsion. Publishing Author, Publish
    Editor, Owner, it still gives the error
    The item cannot be saved to this folder. The folder was deleted, or you do not have permission. Do you want to save a copy of it in the degfualt folder for the item.
    When I changed the form back to IPM.Contact  i ran the omglass.exe to change it on all the contacts in the public folder.
    Please advise for no contacts can now be added to our company contact list

    Hi,
    Please right-click this public folder, click Properties. In the General tab, make sure the field of "When posting to this folder, use" is set to IPM.Contact.
    Please restart Outlook with Outlook /checkclient switch(Start > Run > type Outlook /checkclient and enter) to have a try. If it fails, please create a new Outlook profile to have a try:

  • How do I share ONLY my Public Folder, not my entire Hard Drive?

    Hi, I'm trying to set up my home wireless network to share files between my two Macs- a Macbook and a Macbook Pro. Instead of allowing access to just the public folder, you can see the entire contents of each hard drive with no restrictions. So much for privacy! I'm new to Macs and I'm sure it's just some simple setting tat I'm overlooking. I had Appleshare turned on but I've since turned it off without making a difference. Can I go through each individual folder and set sharing priviledges like on a PC? Thanks in advance!

    Since you are logging on to another computer as a registered user, you have access to whatever a registered user is entitled to. That is to be expected. I don't see how it is a problem. What privacy issue are you talking about when you are logging in as yourself? Furthermore, no one can access what you can when logged in as yourself if they do not know the correct username/password. There is no issue here.
    But, if you want to use a Mac like a Windows machine, You can create a folder in the home directory of each computer where you log in as Guest and have Read/Write privileges. I'd create such a folder inside your Public Folder, and set its special permissions, and I would not change permissions on any other folders as that could cause security and general use issues with applications.
    I think you can set Group to nobody(others can offer better suggestions here) and give Group Read/Write permissions. Then, you can use that folder to share files like with a windows machine, but it makes no sense to me.
    My real suggestion is to understand how the Mac works, and it is very secure, and not use it like Windows.

  • How can I share files/libraries between users?

    I have tried to enable file sharing between me and my hubby. I would like to share iTunes and iPhoto libraries but cannot. I don't want to have the same photos & CDs replicated just so we can have two different logins.
    How can I do this?

    Hi, Loker. Welcome to the Discussions.
    Mac OS X and other UNIX®-based systems, in general, are not set up to easily share data between users. A fundamental idea behind UNIX security is each user's data is theirs and theirs alone, and a user must take steps to share data on their accounts with other users, either on that computer or over a network. This is why, in Mac OS X, the Users > Shared folder exists: all users have Read & Write access to such, providing a "commons" for easily sharing documents between users on the same Mac. The Public folders in each account are extant for a similar reason.
    Simply changing the access privileges on the folders of a given user may provide access to the files within those folders, but does not change the access privileges on the individual files within such: you may be able to see the files, but not use them. This depends on the application. Additionally, applications often expect to find their specific content in a specific location, usually one owned by the user who created the content.
    ITunes and iPhoto have generally been designed as single-user applications. Despite Mac OS X being a multi-user operating system, Apple did not initially consider the idea of a "family" computer where a family would all share and update common music or photo libraries.
    Some of these issues have been addressed, albeit IMO somewhat inadequately, by adding content-sharing functions to recent versions of iTunes and iPhoto. This was primarily for sharing content over a local network, but these methods also work between users on the same Mac. You can find relevant information by searching the Help for iTunes and iPhoto. In iTunes, select Help > iTunes Help. In iPhoto, select Help > iPhoto Help.
    The downside of these approaches are the requirements they place on the account sharing its music or photos. Specifically, that account must be:
    1. Logged in, and...
    2. The specific application -- iTunes, iPhoto -- must be running to share its content.
    These functions also place limitations on what you can do with shared content, delineated in the "About" documents you will find in the Help related to sharing.
    More sophisticated methods for sharing iTunes music, iPhoto photos, iMovie projects, and other application-specific files between users on the same Mac are generallly found in magazine articles or by searching the Web. A good site to search is Mac OS X Hints. You can also search or post on the iTunes Discussion, iPhoto Discussion, etc. for additional ideas.
    Two useful magazine articles in praticular:
    • The June 2006 issue of MacWorld also had some suggestions on iPhoto sharing that could also be applied to iTunes. That article is currently online: see "One iPhoto, many users."
    • The article "Share Files and Apps with Multiple Users" by Fong and Willams in the August 2004 issue of MacAddict discussed techniques that generally involve the use of the Shared folder and UNIX symbolic links. You can order back issues of MacAddict by contacting their customer service office.
    Good luck!

  • Can't copy files to server folder

    I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise and need to copy the contents of a CD to one of our W2003 servers.  I have a shared folder on the server so I start copying files from the CD, to this folder.  Part way through the copy it says "You need permission
    to perform this action".
    ???  I HAVE permission.  I'm in the middle of copying files to it.  I logged on to the server.  My username has full control permissions over the shared folder in question on the share and the file system.  I can create new
    files in the share, create new folders and I've tried copying the disc to my desktop first and then to the share and I keep getting the same error.  I can copy any file off my desktop to this share except the files that came from the disc.  Why would
    I get this error part way though the copy process?
    Thanks!
    Edit: I managed to copy all files except "Autorun.inf".  Does Windows havd some restriction about copying this file?

    Hi,
    1.
    Please test other CDs to see if the same issue occurs.
    2.
    Manually insert the CD to Windows Server 2003 machine and copy to Windows Server 2003 to see if the issue occurs.
