Can't shut down via apple menu

For the past few days my computer will not shut down using the apple menu. Nothing happens when I select "shut down" or "restart." Also, during the same time period, the black "you must restart your computer" box has appeared a few times after my computer has frozen. This first happened a couple of minutes after rebooting after doing a software update. I left the computer overnight after starting the update, so I awoke to find the regular post-update pop-up instructing me to restart, which I did without a problem. Only after this did the freezing and shutdown problem begin. I have trouble believing that leaving an update overnight would cause this problem, but it seemed worth mentioning to be on the safe side.
Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks,
kate

You are correct, my response was curt and I apologize. And of course she should run diagnostics, and use her start up disk to both verify and repair the disk and repair permissions. She could also create a new user and see if the problem persists with a new user account. However the exact nature of the problem she described is consistent with her unfortunately having a corrupted update or install. Although unusual for OS X, as compared to Windows machines, anything can happen (and usually does).
Should none of her diagnostics routine help, reinstalling Mac OS X is not a difficult, nor time consuming job, provided all her personal information is backed up elsewhere. Not only that ,but reinstalling the OS will give her some set up opportunities that she did not have when she started the ibook up with the oem install. If you are still under warranty or have Applecare, you can always oblige yourself of those resources if you are uncomfortable pursuing anythign further.
Good luck,
ibook G4 1.33ghz 12, 1.42ghz 14   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

  • Wont shut down from apple menu

As above, havbe a G4 tower, 1GH, 10.5.8, generally been the most stable mac I've ever had. Lately it won't shut down fro m the Apple menu, have t use the power button When I use the Apple menu, the menu items disappeart and I wait, expecting it to proceed through the shut down process but it sits indefinitely with the background scvrteens unchan ged. I did 'repair permissions' etc , disc first aid etc, even left it on overnight as I remember readi ng that the mac would perform 'repairs' automatically at a certain AM hour. That worked for one day then it's back to using the power button.
It's no longer my main workhorse, an intel machine does that, but it is a HUGE resource fopr me in that it controls 8 HDs with a lopt of work and finished projects backed up. I could but one n ow for £50-00 but that's not the point is it lads, my old trusty mac deserves some TLC in it's twilight years.

    Hi Peter,
This has cured it in a couple of cases...
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Computer wont shut down. Says mail canceled shut down to go quit mail and shut down in apple menu. But when I do it just pops up the same windows again. Help ?

    Help ?
Computer will not shut down for me.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Press Alt, Command and Esc keys, choose Mail and force quit it. Then, turn off your Mac.
If it doesn't work, hold Control, Command and Eject keys to force a restart, or hold the Power button until your MacBook Pro turns off

  • Can't shut down / restart after Leopard upgrade

The installation went ok - I had to unplug all peripherals for it to reboot at the end of the install.
Now when I want to shut down or restart, it just doesn't. After a while it brings an error message that it can't shut down because an application (e.g. firefox) doesn't want to quit. Even if I close all running applications, it still comes back and says it can't close Finder (at that point, there is no menu bar on top anymore, however the application bar on bottom is still there - showing now application active. And then it just sits there. I have to push and hold the power button for it to switch off.
Anybody any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks -
    Jo

Yes. I know. If you could type everything about the problem, it would be too long for anyone to read.
Be patient, because I would like to track down where you are getting this "hang."
If you "Quit" (via command Quit) all open appications except Finder (verify this by opening the Apple icon --> Force Quit and verify that nothing except "Finder" is showing); disconnect all external firwire and USB devices; and then choose shut down, do you still get a hang?
If it still hangs, and you get the message that you can't shut down because some application will not quit, then open Aptivity Monitor (Applicaitons --> Utilities), are any of the processes listed displayed in red?
I think that the deal is that you've got an applicaiton hanging that is preventing a system shup down. I bet we can find the culprit.

Try to "Force Quit" Safari - either under the Apple menu or by holding down option-Command-esc.

  • Can not shut down.

So I can not shut down either of my MacBooks, 2006 Macbook and 2008 Aluminum Macbook, by going Apple>Shutdown. It just sits there and does nothing. Same thing happens when I go to Restart, Logout, or Sleep. I have repaired my permissions and disk and have scanned for viruses and nothing is wrong in either department. I did not download anything new or install a bootcamp partition or any new VM via VMWare. It just randomly started happening one day. Then when I got the new Macbook, I transfered my Applications and it still happened, which is what made me think it was either a virus or permissions. I have also tried to create a new user of each usergroup, ie Admin, Guest, etc... and I still have the same result.
Any solutions or idea would be greatly appreciated.

Somewhere in other posts, it's been mentioned to check the processes in Activity Monitor; I will be doing the same tonight when I am in front of mac at home.
Meanwhile, you could try the same, try looking any drivers or any other processes that might be preventing the shutdown.
    Hope it helps.

  • Can't shut down since latest Software Update

Software Update failed, see thread on following post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6866395#6866395
Basic summary - Software Update wouldnt install latest Security & Safari updates. I managed to verify & repair my disk using Disk Utility. Software update still didn't work, so I downloaded latest security update & safari 3 manually. Restarted ok.
However, I now can't shut down my laptop. Apple Menu > Shut Down just doesn't work. Nothing happens. Same with Restart or Force Quit. Sleep is working fine.
To shut my computer down now, I have to press & hold the on/off button.
This has happened a few times over the last couple of years, but since latest update its constant, have to force shut down every time. Disk is verified ok by Disk Utility.
Not keen on doing a full OSX re-install just yet, so any ideas?
    Cheers
    Brad

    HI B Real,
How much free drive space do you have on your PBook? If it's less then 15%, that could be your answer. The easiest way to find this information is to open a Finder window. At the bottom of that window the free drive space will be displayed. If it's 15% or less... that could very well be your culprit. Transfer files to an external drive/iDisk/iPod, or CD/DVD's if your PBook has a SuperDrive.
Also, maybe your Software Update preference file is corrupted. Try this... locate this
file: com.apple.softwareupdate.plist It's here: Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
    I hope something helps...

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

    Yea,
I bought an original CRT iMac  two day's before  they were launched, which got the reseller into trouble, and had it replaced by APPLE.
This was a great learning process for me dealing with the glitches. :-)
I LOVE MAC. Now own 4 and on my 10th. in 15 years + 7  bought for family.

  • Hi, my iphone 4s shuts down randomly, Apple told me the phone is fine, I did a 2nd restore, deactivated iCloud, and no the frequency of shutting down is even more, any help please ?

Hi, my iphone 4s ios 6.0.1 shuts down randomly, Apple told me the phone & battery are fine as it holds a charge, I did a 2nd restore, deactivated iCloud, and now the frequency of shutting down is even more, any help please ?

It's almost impossible to say whether it's the battery or something else.  If you're running 6.0.1 and you've done a restore and set it up as new, there are no other software updates to try.
If there's no Apple Store near you, contact Apple Care. If  you can't wait for a replacement phone, you may be able to get an express replacement (they ship you the replacement before you ship them yours, but they will put a hold on your credit card until yours is in their hands).

  • Pro can not shut down

last night ,i uploaded 30G data to my pro ,then it can't shut down. 5 hours.   i bought it on August 23

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?
