Can't turn off printer sharing in 10.4.7

I came in this morning to check on my lab computers and noticed a ton of duplicate printers on my network. I narrowed it down to a single computer, but I can't seem to turn off Printer Sharing in System Preferences. The only thing I changed recently was upgrade/install the latest version of CUPS.
Any suggestions on how I can turn off Printer Sharing? Is there a command line cmd to turn it off?

Just to make sure you didn't overlook the obvious (we all do it more often than we care to admit). Can you toggle the other services in the Sharing pane? Perhaps you just need to click on the padlock and authenticate before you can make changes.
Second thing to try. Make sure System Preferences is not open. Look in the user's Home folder/Library/Caches. Find a cache item com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. Delete this item. Log the user out and log back in. Now open System Preferences and see if you can make the changes.
Third thing to try. Here are the items that get changed in the /etc/cups/cupds.conf file when you turn Printer Sharing OFF---
line 55 becomes
ServerName 127.0.0.1
lines 453 and 454 become
#Port 631
Listen 127.0.0.1:631
line 581 becomes
#BrowseAddress @LOCAL
line 635 becomes
BrowseInterval 0
line 826 Allow From @LOCAL
is deleted and the block from line 822 through 826 becomes
<Location />
Order Deny,Allow
Deny From All
Allow From 127.0.0.1
</Location>
All these changes are taken from a modification of the default cupsd.conf as supplied with the version of CUPS Apple supplies with Tiger. The cupsd.conf that comes with version 1.2.x is most likely different. You will have to do some comparison and interpretation.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: Don't forget to recycle the cupsd whenever you make a change to the configuration file.
sudo killall -HUP cupsd

  • Cannot turn off Printer Sharing???

    Hi there,
I've been busy configuring our Macs in work to use the printers dotted around the office. I've been successful apart from one little annoyance that I cannot figure out. How do you turn off Printer Sharing?
I'm using CUPS 1.2.11 and printing to a Xerox DocuColor 3535 and a DocuColor 5252 using IP Printing via LPR.
Does Printer Sharing need to be on, hence why every time I turn it off it reverts back to being on??

    Hi greg,
I posted a message before but it has disappeared, so please forgive me if there are two posts that have the same information.
I was advised by one of our Xerox engineers to upgrade CUPS to the current version. He actually said I should upgrade to version 1.3 but since it is a beta I thought I'd stick with 1.2.11 for now. Sadly it appears he was wrong and I shouldn't have upgraded.
It also appears I didn't read your response correctly. I can turn off printer sharing individually (for each printer) by doing as you advised and 'Unpublish' each printer. However, global printer sharing (in System Preferences/Sharing) is still ON and it won't switch off. Even more worrying is this - although Printer Sharing is on, the firewall hasn't opened the Printer Sharing port, and I can't manually open it because it is set to automatically open when Printer Sharing is switched on.
So now Printer Sharing is stuck on but the firewall will not open the port. Can I edit anything in the CUPS server configuration file to disable Printer Sharing? The information in my configuration file (taken from http://127.0.0.1:631/admin?op=config-server) is below:

  • Can't turn off internet sharing

My brand new MacBook Pro has been working perfectly--until out of the blue internet sharing turns on everytime I boot up. I have never used internet sharing and certainly don't want to now, because I can't use my wireless network with it on.
My internet connection has been working flawlessly and I made no changes whatsoever (it simply was on once after booting up, and now is on forever), but I CAN'T turn off internet sharing. In my internet sharing preference panel it says that internet sharing is already off, but my airport menu bar says it is on. This is becoming most irritating. Any suggestions?

  • How can i turn off library sharing remotely because i cant remember all the computers or systems

I want to be able to add my new computer to my library sharing however it will not let me. It says i already have 5 computers on the system. My question is as i said, how if possible can I turn off the connection to the other computers?

This isssue is about authorisation rather than home sharing.
You can't de-authorise just the computers you no longer have access to.
Your only option is to de-authorise all your computers and then re-authorise those you wish to be authorised. You can do this by logging into your account settings in iTunes on your computer (Store > View My ID) and selecting the option to de-authorise all.
Please note however, you are only permitted to do this once in each 12 month period, therefore you would be better de-authorising your computers before you lose access to them. you can do this from the 'Store' menu in iTunes.

  • Can I turn off home sharing for other computers from my own?

I recently got a new computer and would like to add my music library to it.  When I try to enable home sharing a message pops up stating that I already have 5 computers on my home sharing network.  I don't have all of the 5 computers because some have broken and so my question is that, is there any way for me to turn off home sharing for those computers from my own?

No such thing is possible via iTunes.
What is possible is deathorizing all computers and then authorize only the one's that you have access to.

  • How can I turn off all sharing on my Macbook

I am a new Mac user and although I love it I am unfamiliar with the sharing options and how they work. I haven't gotten a clear answer yet but my question is how can I ensure that I am not sharing any of my files. I can see other users who are sharing. Will other users still be able to see me if I am not sharing and how do I turn it off. Thank You.

Go to System Preferences -> Sharing. If everything there is turned off, nobody can access any of your files remotely.
For that matter, even if you have stuff turned on, if it's all configured correctly, someone would need to know a password to access anything.

  • Can't turn off music sharing

Here's a strange quasi-problem. I recently noticed that my computer is sharing my entire iTunes library, whether I want it to or not! If I have sharing turned on then two librarys are available for people to connect to, and if I turn it off on library still remains. Even if I quit iTunes others can still connect to my library and listen. I've also tried blocking the port with the firewall, no good. This wouldn't be a problem, except I don't want to share my entire library, and this unstoppable library doesn't share my playlists. I've got all the latest updates. Can anyone help me?

  • Can I turn off file sharing on iPhone and iPad?

Got an iPad for work recently to store all of my secure PDF documents on.  These PDF's contain lots of sensitive and high security information.
The other day I was messing around with it and discovered that the iPad could be plugged into any computer with iTunes and all of my files could be downloaded using the file sharing part of the program.  I have searched and searched and searched, but cannot find any way to disable file sharing on my iPad at all.
So I have 2 questions.  First of all, can I disable file sharing on my iPad?  And Secondly, if I can't disable it, does anyone know an app that I can use to manage folders of PDF files that doesn't use file sharing?
    Any help is appreciated!

Which program includes such a file sharing option?
Do you making use of the iPad's Passcode Lock feature especially with having such sensitive and high security info included with these PDF files?
Using the Passcode Lock prevents the iPad from being synced with iTunes on any other computer and from transferring data from or to the iPad with iTunes on any other computer other than the computer used for syncing your iPad.

  • Can you turn off home sharing on a computer that no longer works?

Had a laptop that died and it was authorized for home sharing. Looking at buying a new one and I'm already at the maximum level of allowable computers (5 of 5). Looking to see if there is a way to deactivate/deauthorize computers that are no longer being used. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have iTunes match? You need a computer to manage an iTunes match library.

  • HT203521 In iOS8 I can't turn off shared iCloud calendar alerts. I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and am constantly getting their alarms for upcoming appointments. Settings- Notifications- Calendar- Shared Calendar Changes turns off changes only.

Have had new iPhone 6 for 2 months, using iOS 8.  I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and I am getting bombarded with their upcoming appointment alerts.  There seems no way to turn this off.  I went to Settings->Notifications->INCLUDE(Calendar)->Shared Calendar Changes and turned everything off, but this only blocks alerts about new events or changes to events being added to the calendars, it does not block the 5-minute/10-minute/etc. alarms that go off immediately in advance of the appointment.  There used to be a setting in iOS7 in "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" way at the bottom to turn off alarms from shared calendars, but I don't see that in iOS8.  Any ideas?

Finally figured this out when I read jodiemcneill 's post about Google calendars.  Thanks!
Reposting the basic idea: to turn off event alerts from shared ICloud calendars, select the Calendar App, then click the "info" (i.e., the circled red 'i') icon next to the shared iCloud calendar to be silenced. Go down to "Notifications" and turn the slider off for "Event Alerts: (Allow events on this calendar to display alerts.)"
For good measure, you can also turn off the slider for "Show Changes" to prevent the calendar from displaying messages when shared events are added/modified/deleted, although this can be done "globally" for all shared iCloud Calendars in Settings->Notifications->Calendar->Invitations (turn off all sliders, click "none" for Alert Style).
This has been a major pain in the ... neck ... for the past 3 months.  So glad to start the new year with a suddnely-much-quieter iPhone 6.

  • TS2972 I have an old computer that died, how do I turn off home sharing on that computer so that I can gain back 1 of my 5 shares for my new computer?

I have an old computer that died, how do I turn off home sharing on that computer so that I can gain back 1 of my 5 shares for my new computer?

As far as I know you don't need to turn off home sharing as such, however you will have lost one of the 5 "authorizations". You can't release these individually unless you are running iTunes on the authorized operating system you want to deauthorize.
You will have to wait until you have 5 authorizations, at which point you can clear them all and start over, reauthorizing the machines you want to.
