Can't Unmount 10.4.11 Partition

Seasons Greetings:
I have a 900mHz G3 iBook with two partitions, one 10.4.11 (HD-1) my main partition, and the other 10.3.9 (HD-2). Since upgrading to 10.4.11, Disk Utility is unable to unmount the 10.3.9 partition for Verify or Repair even though I've nothing running off it. Disk Warrior and DU on Tiger CD and Safe Boot mode says everything's okay. If I eject HD-2 and use DU to remount it then things are also okay. I severed all aliases to the Dock from HD-2's folders but still no go. Is there a tracer program which I can use to see what possible files or apps on HD-2 are open which is hanging things up?
Thanks for any assist!

Do you know about Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder?

  • Can't unmount raid set

    After a RAID 1 setup on mac mini Lion Server, I decided I need to change partition table.
    Trying to delete the RAID set in recovery mode (booted from USB boot disk) the delete failed, the disks are listed as being "online".
    Booted into disk target mode and accessing the mini disks via thunderbolt from MBP, I tried running diskutility - again without success.
    using comand line diskutil gives me the following error:
    diskutil appleRAID delete /dev/disk3
    Started RAID operation on disk3
    Unmounting volume for RAID set A8306D65-4E36-4C4B-AFFA-7B232AF9D005

    there must be a way to re build a RAID set from scratch, I am puzzled.

    Hi BDAqua,
    after I posted I did some more research and figured that i had to remove the drives with the "diskutil appleRAID remove" command.
    after that everything worked as expected.

  • Disk Utility - Restore can not unmount target drive

    Just got a brand new MacBook Pro with Lion. As usual there are "issues"..
    I wanted to move my old TimeMachine backup (250 GB) to a larger Firewire drive (500 GB) and found a lot of instructions on that.. Problem is they don't work on Lion. (Both are Iomega drives with Firewire)
    The instructions suggest that using Disk Utility to "restore" the new drive from the old will work but I always get the Error "Can not unmount target drive..." and I can see that the source drive is unmounted but not the target.  I did all of the "First Aid" stuff to both drives.. (and the target drive was turned into a MacOS partition and verified..)
    I then tried the exact same process on my old MacBook Pro (Leopard) and everything worked as expected..
    Was there another way to do this in Lion.. or is this broken..???
    Thanks for any feedback..
    John..

    Is the new drive prepped?
    Drive Preparation
    1. If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    In Disk Utility you clone as follows:
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the new backup drive. Source means the old backup drive.
    If you still have a problem then boot into the Recovery HD:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Choose Disk Utility from the main menu then click on the Continue button.

  • IMac Wont boot, can't unmount, can't reinstall

    Hi Community, I'm really hoping you can help me as this one has me stumped.
    I have a 2010 (i think, i can't boot it to check) iMac, through a power cut it now won't boot to OS X (Yosemite 10.10)
    I have tried to boot it to recovery and can not reinstall, i have 3 partitions
    imac
    recovery hd
    BOOTCAMP
    I have tried a disk repair on the iMac partition which is greyed out and it says it can not repair it and i should back up my files and reinstall. Here comes the tricky part no matter how i boot the mac to Disk Utility i can not remove the old partitions, i get the error that the drive can not be unmounted no matter what i do, i have tried from external HD, USB flash and from internet recovery.
    If i boot to window the machine starts fine and i can see windows, and i can then see the iMac drive listed in windows. Ive tried PRAM/NVRAM resets, when OS X does try to start the progress bar gets to about half way and then the machine just sits there at that.
    Is there anyway i can boot to anything that will stop it from first mounting the drives so i can nuke the partition table and start fresh without having to remove the drive from the drive.
    In disk utility if i attempt to mount the iMac partition it reports "Cant Open Drive"
    Im not bothered about the bootcamp partition or the existing partitions, i just want to get the iMac running OS X again.

    After banging my head against the wall, and Apple suggesting a genius bar appointment to replace the drive (at cost) i have resolved the issue. It was a bit of a hack but might help some one else who has the same problem
    1) Boot to Windows (Bootcamp)
    2) Go to partition manager in windows.
    3) Delete the Apple partitions that are listed in the window.
    4) Resize the windows partition, this forces windows to re-write the partition table it would seem
    5) Boot to recovery with CMD + R
    6) Open disk utility and you will only see the Bootcamp partition and nothing more, you can now unmount it.
    7) erase the disk with GUID partition layout, repartioning as required
    8) Install OS X from the same recovery instance (i used Internet recovery as i was attempting with USB and Internet)
    The above *may work with a USB bootable device.
    Hope this helps just 1 person who was stuck and couldn't find a solution in my predicament.

    Hi LamboMong,
    just try this:
    http://refit.sourceforge.net
    install, reboot twice and choose the Windows-Partition on next startup.
    (The apple-bootloader doesn't display all bootable harddisks.
    With rEFIt you can boot from all partitions/harddisks on your computer.)
    I hope that will solve your problem.

  • Can I use an empty (NFTS)partition on my 1tb WD drive for Time Machine

    I have a 1TB WD external hard drive formatted NTFS into 6 partitons. Can I use one of the partitions for Time Machine? or will it try to destroy all the partitions I have on the NTFS drive? I have Macbook Pro (early 2011 with OXS 10.7 Lion) and am running Parallels with Windows Vista on the Mac. And I have a Toshiba satellite running Vista. I just want to be able to read and write to my USB drive, from both and transfer files from the windows machine to the Mac and vice versa. Any Suggestions?

    TimeMachine backups should be at least 2x the size of the HD.  Assuming you hve a 500 GB drive, all of the 1 TB will be needed, not just 1 partition.
    Even if you decided to run below specs, you still need a disk with the GUID partition mapping scheme and HFS+ partition for TimeMachine.
    I just purchased a new/self-powered LaCie 1 TB fro my 500 GB MBP.  "New" being the operative word.
    As to reading/writing NTFS ... Mac can read read NTFS but not write it without special software.

  • Ipod will not Update "Can't unmount Ipod" message

    This may be a simple answer but when I run ipod updater to get the newest fixes for my ipod, it stops updating in the middle and gives me the message "Can't unmount ipod" ???
    What does this mean and what am I doing wrong??? Do I need to have Itunes running while it updates or no?/? I'm just confused thanks!
    Dell   Windows XP

    I was wondering, is there a file similar to ctzapxx.exe on the installation CD for the CL audigy 2 ZS that will allow the software for the sound card to run? I get the same message as you do (no audigy 2 zs hardware found on computer) but when trying to install the core drivers. I have tried installing the core drivers manually but to no effect, still no hardware present. Therefore, I tried randomly running ctzapxx.exe from my installation CD just to see if it would run and it did, the only problem is I dont have the base drivers so it technically updated nothing. Anyone know the name to a similar CT file that would work the same way but would instead install the audigy 2 software itself? Thanks.

  • How can i completely remove the recovery partition?

    Hi, i own an HP notebook model Pavilion 15-e070sl and i want to know how i can remove the recovery partition. I just performed a clean install from my System Recovery DVDs and i don't need the recovery partition anymore (since i got those DVDs), so i decided to delete it from the HP Recovery app; now the data has been deleted but i have a 17GB circa unallocated space on the disk, and i'd like to merge it with C to get some more space, but i don't know how to do it. I tried with thw windows disk management and i can't, i tried with easeus partition master but after moving those two little partitions before the unallocated space or even deleting them (see the pic http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6928/1lge.png) i can't expand C: to get rid of the unallocated space.
    Any suggestion?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    Assuming E: is the Recovery Partition. Please try:
    Right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management, then right-click the graphic of the E partition and select Delete. The partition returns to Unallocated for a Primary Partition or Free Space if it‘s a Logical Drive within an Extended Partition. Delete the partition if it is an Extended partition.
    Now right-click the graphic of the C partition and select Extend.
    Note: C and E must be sitting next to each other.
    Regards.

  • Can we pass paramters in the partition script

    Can we pass parameters in the partition script in Essbase. Where the parameters are read by a windows batch file which is executed in windows environment.
    Our Business requirement, the business will key in the parameters ie(Month and Year) in a partition script dynamically.
    We are scheduling the partition script through Windows Batch file.
    So is it possible to create a parameter file in windows and pass these parameters to windows batch file.It should be dynamically mapped with partition Script.If possible,can anyone provide sample script to show how it works.

    Thank You Wills. The requirement is the users want to change the mappings in the partition script, but users are not having any access to the EAS. They want the mappings to be dynamically changed in the partition script on adhoc basis.
    Admin can change the values to the substituion variables, but the requirement is users wants to change the mappings.
    So they asked for the parameter file.

  • Can't unmount a hard drive

    Since I use Leopard, Once I plugin a Firewire harddrive, it is not possible to unmount it unless I reboot the computer.
    Tried to repair permissions, tryed to rebuild Directory tried… tried…
    Drives (several) mount/unmount normally on my other computers (G4 Panther).
    Has anyone seen this?
    Thanks for your help.
    OSX10.5.2, MacBook Pro 2,5GHz.

    Yes, it says the disk is in use. The only way to unmount is to reboot the computer. Problem occurs on several FW drives.
    When I try to repair with Disk Utility, it just hangs. Disk Warrior, Drive Genius can't find a problem. But, strangely, Drive Genius doesn't even allow to rebuild/repair the internal drive and DiskWarrior won't allow me to look at it either. If I try to repair it with Disk Utility, it does not work (hangs). If I also try to repair with Disk Utility once booted from the installation CD system, same thing. Doesn't get past a certain point and hangs.
    Seems to me all this is related to the internal drive, even though some FW drives can mount/unmount without problem.
    All external FW drives have been checked and/or fixed with another computer (G4/OSX10.3.9) and function perfectly with it. Not on Macbook Pro/Leopard.
    Any help someone. After reading some posts it seems related to the same "unknown" problem…
    Thanks

  • IB Queue: Can a Queue be Unordered and Partitioned at the same same time?

    Hi,
    My question is related to Unordered Queue:
    Can a Queue be Unordered and Partitioned at the same same time?
    From PeopleBooks: Managing Service Operation Queues
    "Unordered:
    Select to enable field partioning and to process service operations unordered.
    By default, the check box is cleared and inbound service operations that are assigned to a queue are processed one at a time sequentially in the order that they are sent.
    Select to force the channel to handle all of its service operations in parallel (unordered), which does not guarantee a particular processing sequence. This disables the channel’s partitioning fields.
    Clear this check box if you want all of the queues’s service operations processed sequentially or if you want to use the partitioning fields."
    This seems to indicate that Unordered queues don't use partitioned fields. Yet, there are a few delivered Queues that are Unordered and have one or more Partition fields selected.

    PSXP_MSG_CHNL
    SERVICE_ORDERS
    How does partitioning work in this case? Or is partitioning ignored in such cases?
    Thanks!

    I guess you could use reflection and do something like the following:
    import java.lang.reflect.Constructor ;
    import java.lang.reflect.Method ;
    public class MyClass<T> implements Cloneable {
      T a ;
      public MyClass ( final T a ) {
        // super ( ) ; // Superfluous
        this.a = a ;
      public MyClass<T> clone ( ) {
        MyClass<T> o = null ;
        try { o = (MyClass<T>) super.clone ( ) ; }
        catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }

        Method m = null ;
        try {
          m = c.getMethod ( "clone" ) ;
          o.a = (T) m.invoke ( a ) ;
        } catch ( NoSuchMethodException nsme ) {
          System.err.println ( "NoSuchMethodException on clone." ) ;
          //  See if there is a copy constructor an if so use it.
          Constructor<T> constructor = null ;
          try {
            System.err.println ( c.getName ( ) ) ;
            constructor = c.getConstructor ( c ) ;
            o.a = constructor.newInstance ( a ) ;
          } catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }
        } catch ( Exception e ) { e.printStackTrace ( ) ; System.exit ( 1 ) ; }
        return o ;
      public String toString ( ) { return "[ " + ( ( a == null ) ? "" : a.toString ( ) ) + " ]" ; }
      public static void main ( final String[] args ) {
        MyClass<String> foo = new MyClass<String> ( "zero" ) ;

  • Can I password protect a HD partition?

    I have a 500gb HD, half for TimeMachine and half for private folders.
    Can I password that whole private partition?

    No. However, you can create an encrypted disk image, copy everything on private into it, and then delete them.
