Can the I use my old Seagate 1TB drive as an external drive?

My iMac is eligible for the HDD replacement programme, I was wondering whether I can use my old drive externally using some sort of connector!
- Is this possible?
- Does Apple keep the old drive when replacing it?

Hi
Thanks for the info, why can't we keep the old ones? That's pants!
What is the replacement HDD? Can you buy it off the shelf?

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the other ID.  When you delete the account it will prompt you about what to do with the iCloud data.  If you need to migrate it and merge it with the data in the new account choose Keep on My iDevice; then choose Merge to upload the data and merge it with the new account.  If your data is already in the other account and you don't need to migrate it to the other account, choose Delete from My iDevice.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Can i use the picture which located on a shared place? In this case, can i use those pictures directly from other places/servers? I mean, can the SAP uses the pictures which not upload to SAP server? if yes, what criteria the pictures are e.g., tiff, jpeg, or size.

  • MacBook, USB wireless antenna, and tethered iPhone 4: Can the iPhone use the antenna?

I have a late 2008 MacBook, a USB wireless antenna (Etekcity High Power 802.11 B/N/G 300M USB Wireless 1000mw Wifi Network Adapter with Dual Antenna), and a USB-tethered iPhone 4. My cell signal is often very poor, and when it is, trying to use the Internet on my iPhone is an exercise in futility.
Can the iPhone use the wireless antenna as an external antenna by, in effect, using the MB as a pass-through device or signal booster? I'd have the iPhone at one end of the chain, connected to the MB via USB, the MB in the middle, and the external antenna on the other end, also via USB.
Is there an app for that? Or are we talking about sending/receiving completely different signals?

Max, I just got the etekcity usb antenna thing and I can't find the mac adapter.  Can you tell me which driver you're using?  (the cd that comes with it doesn't seem to work).
    Thanks!

  • IPAD AIR - Lost and Stolen. Can the thief use my locked device?

MY iPad Air was lost/stolen while crossing the border between Hong Kong and Lowu (Shenzhen).
The device is locked. Under the support/my devices it shows that my iPad is registered with Apple and I do have the serial number for the device handy.
I tried to use "FIND MY IPHONE" and the device does not show up. It is possible I did not activate that function although this is unlikely.
Can the thief use my device by erasing all the data? Can Apple trace the device and if so, who do I report it to at Apple ?
    Please help.

    Thanks for your reply.
I also read somewhere that in the event I use the remote function via iCloud to delete the contents of the iPad, the thief could then use it. I have no intention of doing this.
I have just secured myself for now and changed all my passwords including the Apple user ID one.
I guess my best bet would be to report and register the number to the local authorities in case it gets returned / shows up by some good samaritan ?

  • Can the aTV read files from an iTunes library on my nas drive without my computer being on

I have my itunes library on a My Book Live nas drive that contains all of my digital movies and TV shows. I want to be able to watch my movies from the library without a computer running. I understand that Apple has chosen to chain you to the computer and your itunes account through Home Sharing but I can not see why they couldn't allow you to access a nas drive without a computer running because your aTV is tied to your itunes account also so why do they force you to run a computer 24/7 365 in order to access the files you have bought and paid for.
I have a love/hate for Apple because I love the quality of the products they make but I hate how they make all of the digital files you purchase only accessible through a computer running Home Sharing even though the files are not stored on the computer.
I have tried several things to get this to work without a computer but no luck. The only way I have found to be able to do this is to Jailbreak your aTV and install 3rd party software (which I don't want to do) that will allow you to by pass the computer and Home Sharing (which is dumber than ****) because that is all I want to do is eliminate the need of a computer running wasting electricity (I thought Apple was supposed to be an enviro friendly company, guess not). I am not trying to steal or give someone else my purchased movies and using the aTV and an internet connection they could still be able to tie your media to your itunes account so I just don't get there thinking, or lack of thinking I should say.
Is their a way to do this without Jailbreaking or modifying your aTV?
If not is Apple ever going to wake up and allow there customers to actually USE the media they purchase from them without Home Sharing and a computer running?

  • Can I copy and store Aperture 3.5 library on an external drive ExFAT?

    Hi
Can I copy and store Aperture 3.5 library on an external drive ExFAT?

No, as Allan Eckert said. Storing your library on and external drive is no problem, but it requires MacOS Extended (Journaled):
You may want to have a look a these support documents:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
    and
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509?
The same goes for iPhoto Libraries:

  • I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive?

I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Until I get it fixed Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive? It's ILife 11 if that makes a difference. Finder won't let me see the files to copy. I know - dumb question.
    Thanks.

Adding an SSD is not a simple endeavour like adding additional memory or adding another hard drive to a Mac Pro. That's probably why the option is only offered as an option at the time of purchase. Even if your Apple store was willing to install the necessary parts you will probably be paying for 1-2 hours of labor plus the cost of purchasing the necessary service parts (SSD, bracket, cables, etc) which I suspect will make the upgrade cost much higher than what it costs to add the SSD option when purchasing a new system.
I use my system for business and need it to work reliably.  Even though I'm fairly handy with tools I would not be willing to risk damaging my system and voiding my warranty by opening my system and removing the logic board and several other parts in order to squeeze in an SSD option and attach the appropriate cables and brackets. I'm also not prepared to deal with the hassles of explaining why my system has unauthorized parts installed in the event I experience issues and need to make use of my Apple warranty. My time is valuable, so I would probably investigate external storage options, or if I needed the speed of an SSD, I would consider selling my existing system and then purchase a new system configured with an SSD.
If you haven't already done so I suggest doing a search on 'iMac SSD installation' to see what's involved. It might help you understand why the SSD option is not offered post purchase.

  • Why in the blue blazes can't I use my old "iWork's " numbers when I downloaded the software onto my computer that has Yosem

    For years I used 1)apple works, 2)then iWork's 8 3)even iWork's  9 to do the books for a small business.  Now that I have a computer with yosemite I can't even make a spreadsheet.
I have loaded my older iWork's 8 software into my computer PRAYING that I could then just make spread sheets using it, or even more blessedly, not having to
update every freaking report/spreadsheet I had done over the past years and transfer them individually.
No, I can't use my old software, nor can I even figure out how to make comparable spreadsheets for a template, if I have to do everything from scratch I will no longer use apple software for such--yes, if you are listening, that is me screaming at the top of my lungs.

    mama,
I am sorry you are so frustrated.  Keep in mind these forums are answered by fellow users.  Non of us are Apple employees.
We are focused on trying to find solutions to problems that exist now with the constraint that we can only use what is available to every other user.  Yelling or venting here is really a waste of good energy.
If you have iWork '09 installed then you should use that to migrate Numbers '08 files as you come across them.  Numbers '08 is dead and is not supported.  For that matter I guess that Numbers '09 is likely to be dead-ended soon.  You should make sure you have completed all updates by
    - opening the Finder menu item " > App Store..." then clicking the "Updates" button:
The latest Number (version 3.x) will open Numbers '09 documents
Numbers '09 (version 2.x) will open Numbers '09 and Numbers '08
I do not think Numbers '08 will run on Yosemite (but I cannot check that).
You can have both Numbers '09 (version 2.x) installed on the same computer as Numbers 3.x
The two icons look like this:
         Numbers                    Numbers
              2.x                              3.x
I keep both in my doc so that I know which one I am launching.  To open a particular document with a particular version of Number drag and drop the document on the appropriate icon in the doc.  Note that Numbers '09 CANNOT open documents created, or saved by, Numbers 3.x.
If you have specific question, please post back
