Can you write an excel file on client machine instead of on the server

I am trying to user cfSpreadSheet functon. The first question I have is, can you write the file on a client machine? I tried but they all end up on the server drive. Scecond question, is there a way to do row and column range formating in CF9.0? SpreadsheetFormatCellRange function is only available for ColdFusion server version 9.01.
Thanks.

To expand on Dan's answer: CF doesn't have any interaction with the client browser at all: client->server comms are handled by the client and the web server; the web server simply asks CF to provide the response data if the file requested is a CF file.  But even then all CF does is process the requested file and return data to the web server.
Also, one of the restrictions of the HTTP protocol is that that there is *no* *way* that the server can write to the client machine.  All it can do is send data to the client agent (eg: a web browser) in response to the client agent requesting it.  Can you imagine the sort of security problems one would open one's self up to if a remote web server could write to your PC????

  • Can you write an avi file without using imaq

    Just curious if anybody has tried to write an avi file without using imaq vi's? So far I have only found sketchy info on the file format and am looking for some help on the file structure etc. Any references or example avi files with explanations of format would be most helpfull. Thanks in advance -

    Absolutely.......
    An AVI video file is actually structured in the same way as most Windows media files or RIFF files as they are generically known, thus the description below is applicable to for example WAV files etc.
    Thus the file always begins with the four byte code RIFF and continues to use this generic four byte coding known as FOURCC, four-character code or FCC throughout.
    There are then specific requirements for each different media content and the sections that must be included to define a valid file structure of the desired meadia type.
    Each section or 'CHUNK' is defined by an FCC (RIFF being the first) with facility to include additional FCC's as required. The FCC is followed by a length descriptor and then the data (just for fun the odd CHUNK does not quite fit this very general overview). These chunks then align to even word boundries so padding zeros are often inserted at the end of a CHUNK to make it all nice and neat.
    It is a requirement that software that does not recognise an additional custom CHUNK should ignore it, this is very easy as all you have to do is use the length descriptor to 'jump' over the CHUNK concerned.
    The following is an example from the 'CLOCK.AVI' found on windows computers for a number of years...
    RIFFjB AVI LISTΠhdrlavih8
    Here you can see the RIFF followed by a four byte length descriptor (4 Gigabytes), followed by various sub CHUNKS in this example the sub CHUNK is an AVI (note that it is actually 'AVI ' to conform to the FCC).
    So the CHUNK structure looks a bit like this:-
    RIFF ('AVI '
    LIST ('hdrl'
    'avih'()
    LIST ('strl'
    'strh'()
    'strf'()
    'strd'()
    'strn'()
    LIST ('movi'
    {SubChunk | LIST ('rec '
    SubChunk1
    SubChunk2
    ['idx1']
    For more information on all this you need to read the RIFF specification documentation on the MSDN website or on the MSDN Technet materials. Most of the stuff you will immediately locate will refer to the AVI file format as that is where most of the recent effort has been focused.

  • Creating excel file on client machine using oracle pl/sql code

    Hi All,
    I have a situation where in i need to create an excel output file in my client machine, but using UTL_FILE i understood that i need to create the directory on server and i need to read and write on server itself.
    Is there any other way where we can create a excel file other than oracle server, bcos this is used only once and there is no scheduler to execute on server.
    Please do the needful.
    Thanks,

    The server should create the data set required by the client - do all the (intense) server processing that servers do well. This data set is then send to the client. The client is responsible for rendering that data set.. or saving it to the client machine storage if needed.
    Within PL/SQL that is quite easy to do using the most common/standard client-server in use today - web based client-server.
    The client is a web browser. It makes a call to the web server, that is serviced by a PL/SQL database procedure - a so-called web enabled procedure. It processes the request from the web browser, and returns a dynamic response. This response can range from HTML and XML, to video and image streams - and also CSV (Character Separated Values) data.
    By default, most web browsers will use the local client spreadsheet application (like MS Excel) to open the CSV response received. Many web browsers will also provide an alternate option of saving that response as a CSV file (that can then be opened later using MS Excel).
    Straight forward and basic client-server - and easily done using PL/SQL. Even easier done using (freeware) Oracle APEX (Application Express). APEX is a PL/SQL software suite that provides a web development system (only web browser required for development) and a run-time system to run the web application you have created.

  • Can you add a pdf file for clients to click on in idvd?

    I need to include a pdf file on a viewing dvd. Can I include it in my dvd so people can click on it and it will open?

    If you want your viewers to be able to access the PDF file while watching the DVD on their TV, then one way to do that would be to create a separate iMovie project containing only the PDF file at, say, a 20 second duration. Then drag the iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the edge of your iDVD project main menu. That would create a separate button for viewing the PDF file.

  • Can you remove Old Backup files from Time Machine sooner?

    So I'm aware that the default settings state that Time Machine will start to delete old backup files from your saved destination once that destination starts to approach full storage capacity. But what if you are not looking to fill up most of your storage capacity with Time Machine backups? Is there a way where you can cut the delete threshold in half and have Time Machine delete old backup files sooner rather than later?

  • Copy file from client machine to unix db server

    Dear all,
    I have oracle form 10g, and data base server using 10 r 2,
    I have an oracle for to browse client XML file and return the name of the file including the path to TEXT item what I want to do after that is to copy the seelcted file from the client to DB server (hint this server over Unix operating system)
    I tried
    V_Cpy_Result := Webutil_File.Copy_File ('C:\File_Name.Xml', '/u01/oradata/odsuat/ssr_xml_dir/Outbound/File_Name.Xml');
    but this does't work, please provide me with the way or the command that I can copy the selected file from client to Unix DB server...

    Hello,
    If you want to transfer files between client machine and A.S. or database machine, use the Webutil file_transfer package's functions.

  • Reading Large data files from client machine ( urgent)

    Hi,
    I want to know the best way for reading large data at about 75MB file from client machine and insert to the database.
    Can anybody provide sample code for it.
    Loading the file should be done at client machine and inserting into the database should be done at server side.
    How should i load the file?
    How should i transfer this file or data to server ?
    How should i insert into the database ?
    Thanks in advance.
    regards
    Kalyan

    Like I said before you should be using your application server to serve files >from the server off the filesystem. The database should not store files this big >and should instead just have a reference to this file. I think u have not understood the problem corectly.
    I will make it clear.
    The requirement is as follows.
    This is a j2ee based application.
    Application server is oracle application server.
    Database is oracle9i
    it is thick client (swing based application)
    User enters datasource like c:\turkey.data
    This turkey.data file contains data
    1@1@20050131@1@4306286000113@D00@32000002005511069941@@P@10@0@1@0@0@0@DK@70059420@4330654016574@1@51881100@51881100@@99@D@40235@0@0@1@430441800000000@@11@D@42389@20050201@28483@15@@@[email protected]@@20050208@20050307@0@@@@@@@@@0@@0@0@0@430443400000800@0@0@@0@@@29@0@@@EUR
    like wise we may have more than 3 lacs rows in it.
    We need to read this file and transfer this to the application server. Which are EJBS.
    There we read this file each row in file is one row in the database for a table.
    Like wise we need to insert 3 lacs records in the database.
    We can use Jdbc to insert the data which is not a problem.
    Only problem is how to transfer this data to server.
    I can do it in one way. This is only a example
    I can read all the data in StringBuffer and pass to server.
    There again i get the data from StringBuffer and insert into database using jdbc.
    This way if u do it. It is performance issue and takes long time to insert into the database.It even may give MemoryOutofBond exception.
    just iam looking for the better way of doing this which may get good performace issue.
    Hope u have understood the problem.

  • Client machines losing connection to Leopard Server

    I have a small office set up as follows: 20" iMac (Intel) running Leopard Server. 4 client machines, all Macs, All Intel, also running Leopard client. I have these machines connected to a Linksys 8 port 10/100 router...and then to a cable modem for Internet Access. The problem that I'm having is that the client machines lose connection to the server multiple times each day. A restart and reconnect seem to fix the problem...only temporarily. At first, I thought it might be the Linksys Router so I put a Gigabit switch in between the machines and the router with the same results. I have the router on a static IP of 192.168.1.2 and am not running DHCP, DNS, or any other services other than file sharing. If any of you have experienced this, I would greatly appreciate any direction you might have.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dan

    It may be a 'typo' by you, but forget about 'appletalk' - this is not relevant to your problem (and pretty well redundant now). This looks like a TCP/IP issue.
    What is doing your DHCP? Presumably you have checked to ensure that there is only the one dhcp server in your network, and another has not accidentally been enabled (on a server, router or airport). What is the dhcp range for the DHCP server?
    Your post suggested that the servers, with static IPs, also 'drop off' the network. So a server IP cannot be pinged from a lan machine which has a correct IP assigned to it (rather than one which has a 169 address which obviously will not be able to ping it) ?
    On your laptops, when connected via an ethernet cable, have a look at Network Prefs-> Show: Network Port Configurations. In what order are these? Specifically, I am wondering if Airport is getting prioritised above Built-in Ethernet and maybe there is a 'rogue' airport network which the laptops discover and attempt to join ahead of built-in ethernet.

  • I´m trying to open an excel file in numbers not being successful. The error msg is unexpectedly error using plugin SFCompatibility can you help me?

    I´m trying to open an excel file in numbers not being successful. The error msg is unexpectedly error using plugin SFCompatibility can you help me? Already changed the extension of the excel document to xlsx an now gives an unknown import error.

    In Excel have you tried saving directly to xls (not xlsx) and opening the xls in Numbers?
    If you have a complicated workbook in Excel that uses lots of Excel's advanced features, Numbers may not be able to handle the import.  It does pretty well on basic things, though.
    If you're just trying to get data into Numbers, then often copy-paste from Excel is easier than trying to open xls files.

  • How can one  read a Excel File and Upload into Table using Pl/SQL Code.

    How can one read a Excel File and Upload into Table using Pl/SQL Code.
    1. Excel File is on My PC.
    2. And I want to write a Stored Procedure or Package to do that.
    3. DataBase is on Other Server. Client-Server Environment.
    4. I am Using Toad or PlSql developer tool.

    If you would like to create a package/procedure in order to solve this problem consider using the UTL_FILE in built package, here are a few steps to get you going:
    1. Get your DBA to create directory object in oracle using the following command:
    create directory TEST_DIR as ‘directory_path’;
    Note: This directory is on the server.
    2. Grant read,write on directory directory_object_name to username;
    You can find out the directory_object_name value from dba_directories view if you are using the system user account.
    3. Logon as the user as mentioned above.
    Sample code read plain text file code, you can modify this code to suit your need (i.e. read a csv file)
    function getData(p_filename in varchar2,
    p_filepath in varchar2
    ) RETURN VARCHAR2 is
    input_file utl_file.file_type;
    --declare a buffer to read text data
    input_buffer varchar2(4000);
    begin
    --using the UTL_FILE in built package
    input_file := utl_file.fopen(p_filepath, p_filename, 'R');
    utl_file.get_line(input_file, input_buffer);
    --debug
    --dbms_output.put_line(input_buffer);
    utl_file.fclose(input_file);
    --return data
    return input_buffer;
    end;
    Hope this helps.

  • Reading data in excel files from client side

    Hello Experts,
    I want to build a website from which clients can upload data in the excel sheets they have into the sql server 2000 on the database server.
    These excel files will be at the client machine from where they will upload all the data from the excel file to database server through this website.
    Can you please help how to go about doing this.

    There are two open source projects that will help you out: Jakarta POI and JExcel. Both can serialize and deserialize Excel files to Java. You can also use the older ODBC-JDBC bridge, which can both read Excel files (albeit in a limited way with SQL syntax) and then output to your SQL Server.

    1) Well I find it rather convenient to deploy a web app as just one file rather than a bunch of files. For deployment it's much better. However I prefer using expanded files when developping (to use auto reload in Tomcat for example)
    2) It is a bad idea to upload files inside your webapp's context (ie: in it's deployment directory) because one day an uninformed system administrator might come and redeploy the web app and therefore delete all your uploaded files (believe me, I've already experienced this!)
    What i do usually is upload it in a completely different directory, something like /uploaded_files. Your uploaded files are therefore completely independant from your webapp
    However it is a bit trickyer to get those files back. Let's take the example of image uploads. You have 2 ways of proceeding:
    - the easiest : configure your web server (apache etc...) to redirect a certain url to your external directory. For example the /upload url will point to a /uploaded_files directory. This is easier to do and the fastest way to serve images but not always the best solution: you are dependant on the web server's configuration and you can't control the visibility on your files (no security constraints, anyone can see your uploaded files if they know the url).
    - you can also write a servlet which will load the file as an array of bytes and send it back in the response.
    You can call it this way :
    <img src="/serlvets/showmyimage?path=uploaded.gif">
    in this way you can control your uploaded files better: you may want to define security constraints on the visibity or not of uploaded files depending on the user which has logged on the site.

  • How can I read an excel file .xls from an forms 6i

    Hi
    I have forms6i and webutil don t work with this version, can I read an excel file from forms6i.
    Thank u

    Hi hosoriol,
    You can refer an excel as an external table first using the steps below and then you can start reading from it.
    If you want to update the excel file then create an view and create instead of triggers for it.
    Steps
    h3. 1.[Create an external table for the excel file |http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/misc/ext_table.html|Click here to view detailed description]
    h4. 1. Create a directory in Oracle where you have kept the xls file
    create or replace directory ext_dir as '/home/rene/ext_dir';h4. 2. grant read, write on directory ext_dir to scott;
    h4. 3. creating the external table
    create table ext_table_csv (
                                                i   Number,
                                                n   Varchar2(20),
                                                m   Varchar2(20)
                     organization external (
                                                     type   oracle_loader
                                                     default directory ext_dir
                                                    access parameters (
                                                                                 records delimited  by newline
                                                                                 fields  terminated by ','
                                                                                  missing field values are null
                                                   location ('file.csv')
                     reject limit unlimited;
    Note_
    If you want to update the excel file then create a view and then create the instead of triggers to do the update, delete or insert.[Creating views on external tables | http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_news/2005_9_1_updating_external_tables.htm]
    h3. 2. Use the data block wizard and connect to the corresponding schema and create a database block.
    Kindly click Correct or Helpful if it helps Thanks :-)
