Cannot add accounts in empathy when logged in as normal user

When I attempt to add an account in Empathy in GNOME, via F4, I am unable to add accounts - the add button, no matter what account type I use, quite simply does nothing.
More interestingly, when I run it as root from a console, it works fine; an error is given when I run it as a normal user from a console:
$ empathy
** (empathy:12734): WARNING **: Couldn't register with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
libGL error: failed to open drm device: Permission denied
libGL error: failed to load driver: radeonsi
I feel like I have missed something trivial, and I can find no references to it...

I use GDM as a display manager for GNOME & Empathy seems to work OK IIRC; I'm in Windows ATM ( ) so I can't check -- I'll edit this later.
You could try GDM and see if that fixes the problem.

  • [Solved] Can't add accounts in Empathy

    Using Empathy on Gnome Shell 3.6.2, everything up to date. I've configured online accounts in System settings (FB+Gmail+MSN). Opened Empathy, expected that Empathy will auto import those accounts but nothing happened. Hm. I've opened empathy-accounts and tried to add account, however when I type in username and password, clicking on Log In button does nothing.

    I got the same problem. empathy-debugger shows absolutely *nothing* when clicking on log in. It also does nothing for Jabber accounts. ICQ and MSN works. I didn't test others.

  • Cannot add account

    Hello, i live in Tokyo and here is my problem: up to now, i had 2 accounts active on my mac. My Mobile Me and my local account through OCN (the xxx.ocn.ne.jp type), both working great. While i was working on the mac yesterday, a message from Mail popped up warning me that my OCN password was rejected and asking me to re-enter it. Because i was busy, i dismissed the warning, thinking i would take care of it later (this had already happened once or twice a while ago with no more trouble than retyping the password). But something weird happened then: i was able to send mail from my OCN account, but i could not receive any. The only temporary workaround i could think of was to go to my Mobile Me mail settings and have my OCN account checked from there. Because this solution is rather inconvenient, i decided to recreate my OCN account. i deleted the account first from the Mail Preferences Accounts window, and after a restart, i clicked the + sign to create the new account.
    i have entered my OCN information in the 3 required fields (the same information i used when i first created the account), but i cannot create the new account: each time i click "Continue", i get the message "searching for mail servers for the specified address" and a spinning wait cursor that never stops spinning—I have even left it spinning for 30 minutes without any luck. Has anyone an idea of what the problem is? (For your info, i have OS X 10.6.2). Thank you in advance.

    @V.K. …i'll try to be clear. When I fill in the three fields of the Add Account screen and click "Continue", no other screen ever shows up, I only get a spinning cursor—my personal record is 25 mn !
    Having checked in the Snow Leopard Portable Genius book, they say that in order to manually create a new account, one must, i quote: "1. Choose Mail>Preferences, 2. Open Accounts pane, 3. Click the bottom-left "+" button, 4. Type the required information and DESELECT THE AUTOMATICALLY SET UP ACCOUNT CHECK BOX, then click the Continue button."
    After that, the user is presented with an 'Incoming Mail Server' window, then an 'Outgoing Mail Server window' that allow the user to create the account. But I have NO 'Automatically set up account' check box on my Accounts pane, so i can't click it! Where the heck is it gone?
    i hope i was clear enough though i'm getting a little confused here… Thank you for your help.
    PS: One more (dumb) question: in the first Add Account screen, what is meant by "Full Name"? Is it whatever is on the left of the @ sign in the email address, or my real full name? I don't see how this could be relevant, and I find the wording unclear.

  • Cannot add accounts

    In the settings screen, I have previously added my mail account and a subscribed calendar.  Now I want to add a moble.me account and find that the 'Add Account...' button is dimmed and cannot be activated.  Anyone have ideas?

    Check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Accounts is not set to Don't Allow Changes

  • Local apps quitting when logged in as Xserve user

    I run a new elementary school mac lab: 24 eMacs (OS 10.4.2) as managed users/groups with remote home directories on an Xserve. We run the programs locally and save to the server. Many of our apps are crashing leaving the OS fine. These are new OSX educational titles from various quality vendors including The Learning Company (Kid Pix Deluxe 4, Storybook Weaver Deluxe) and Tom Snyder Productions (Neighborhood Map Machine). And these are the only apps run so far! Our eMacs have 512 MB Ram. I use an iMac G5 with 1GB Ram as the instructor. These apps quit ALOT; however, when logged in as an administrator to the local machine, the apps do NOT quit. I've tried the various solutions posted in the Tiger discussions regarding font removal and system cache cleaning...to no avail. I'm beginning to think it may be server-related. HELP!!!

    could be a corrupt computer list. We have run into this quite a bit. Create a new computer list, not from a template, add the apps and see what happens.

  • Why does terminal behave differently when logged in as different users?

    when I'm logged into my mba as my regular normal user, bash behaves normally;  but when I create a new user or use any user other than my default the behavior is different.  (might be bash or sh)
    Specifically, the tab autocomplete function works fine when I'm logged in as my regular user (tab-complete;  tab twice for all available selections/options).
    But on a newly-created user (also an admin) there is no tab complete, no 'tab twice, other options' etc.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    I searched in this forum and found some instructions for creating an .inputrc file but I don't appear to have one on my default user so not sure why I would need this on the new user ?!?!?
    p.s. here are the instructions I found previously via a post on this forum:

  • Application won`t start - starts when logged in as another user

    An application created by Unity doesn`t start. When I double click (or right mouse click and choose `open`) nothing happens. However, when I log in as another user, or when I try to run the same program from a flash drive, it works. I tried a lot, including repairing permissions, but nothing helped.
    Thanks in advance !

    Try logging into your user while holding down the shift key on your keyboard, to supress any startup items that may be interfering with your program.
    If that does not do it, look for a preference file in you user folder by choosing the Go menu from the Finder and selecting Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences and checking for files having to do with your application. If there are any, move them to your desktop and try again.
    If that does not fix it, move them back, replacing the new ones that will be built. Also, if your program uses any data files or libraries when started up, try removing those. Again, if not fixed, put them back.

    "System Administrator" is the system access for the xserve. "Administrator" is your system access for the user/client computers, when logged in as that, it allows you access to the system "no restriction". I use one "name" for system access for all servers and clients on campus. I have alot of older applications that we run that have their own issues but not permissions, they run under OS 9. Newer apps like Mavis Beacon16 and Carmen SanDiego I had to tweak, I run them server based. I assume you have Apple Remote Desktop running. Set one of your lab computers up as a back up administrator/tester with ARD and all the server apps installed. I had all my new iMac G5 go bad (Bad Capacitors) and they were my Admin computers. Tweak one app at a time, get it running the way you want it to. Have a student abuse/test the app. Once it works correctly shoot the app to the other clients via ARD. This way your only fixing on machine. Setting Read/Write is a quick fix to get them up and running, But you are opening up the applications to the students who a very creative and never read dialog boxes. If you leave them open you will have to reinstall them occasionally to get them working again. I have had students change the name of a file and the app quits working. That is the major problem of Read/Write.

    Jon,
    Are you sure that the Database is started? You will get this
    error if it isn't.

  • Adobe Illustrator file will not display correctly when logged in as a user

    I am working with an Adobe Illustrator CS2 file that will open and display correctly if I log in as Administrator, but will not display correctly if I am logged on as a user. The error message is that there is not enough memory to display the file correctly and I am forced into preview mode. The user Home folder is on a server. Other than this, I have made certain that the criteria for opening the file match under both interfaces. I have opened the AI CS2 file on other Macs and it opens fine. I conclude that the problem is with the user Home folder, but beyond that, I'm stumped. Any help will be appreciated.

    After I filed a bug-report an Apple engineer contacted me, and asked me to try running java in headless mode: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/Desktop/headless/
    That solved the problem!

  • Acrobat 9.5.0 - when logged in as ONE user unselect "Display PFD in browser" don't work

    Have Acrobat standard v9.5.0 running on Win7 - 64 bits. All up to date patched. On one user I can not let PDF files downloaded from the Internet open in an external window. I in the Preference I have unselected "Display FDP in browser".   Then I can see the file is downloaded, but never opened. I if select "Display FDP in browser" it is (now) OK. If I uninstall IE9 and am running IE8 or Firefox, everything is fine. It is also fine if I log in as another user.
    I have uninstalled Adobe Acrobat and reinstalled. Uninstalled IE9 and reinstalled. My conclusion is that there is something wrong with the registry HCU part for the "problem" user. I have deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\9.0 but still I have problems.
    My question is: Which part of registry controls IE9 and opening PDF files downloaded from internet? How can I find the "bad registry key" for the problem user?
    Thanks in advance
    Harald

    Is IE9 Security preventing the download of the file?  IE9 has a security feature that does this and pops a dialog at the bottom of the browser window, you might want to check it out.

  • Cannot add accounts to calendar

    Hello
    I had a problem with an exchange calendar and an online "fix"was to delete the library/calendar cache files - which I did.
    This caused issues and I tried to restore my calendar via Time Machine with no luck, so in the end I completely deleted my library/calendar directory to start afresh... well that's what I thought.
    Under System Preferences Internet Accounts I can see my iCloud, Exchange, Facebook etc which all have the Calendar item ticked. When I go to the Calendar app (on iMac not phone), the calendar is completely empty. If I look under Calendar Preferences the account list is empty. If I try and add an account,it lets me enter in the details but nothing gets saved and no calendars shown.
    Within System Preferences I've switched accounts and options on and off and nothing happens. It almost seems as though the calendar apps completely "dead" and nothing is syncing or saving.
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks.
    Nick

    Ok, I appear to have managed to solve this problem.  Basically I went into system preferences, turned off iCloud.  Rebooted the computer and then signed into iCloud.  At that point I got a prompt about merging calendars.  I had not received that message in all my previous efforts.  Clicked ok and then watched it sync back up.
    On to the iOS device.  Again, I finally turned off iCloud and allowed it to delete all the files.  Restarted the device and then signed back into iCloud and same results.  It finally synched.
    It appears that iCloud simply doesn't respond to prompts for some issues unless you just clear iCloud out and restart the whole process.
    Sheesh.  Calendar and other synching used to be so much simpler and I miss those days.  I'm still completely stumped by podcast synching.

  • Cannot add items to HierarchicalCollectionView when parent is a leaf

    Hi,
    I cannot use the addChild function on a hierarchicalCollectionView object, when the parent element is a leaf node.
    When the selected node already has children, it works, but if the new node would be the first child, addChild returns false.
    How can I add a new child to a leaf?
    Attached you'll find a small example (rename .txt to .mxml then). Try to click on the button when "Part1_1" is selected in the tree. -> doesn't work. If any other nodes are selected, it works.
    Thanks a lot for you help,
    Bye,
    Fritz

    Hi,
    i found the solution myself. You've to extend the HierarchicalData class and override the canHaveChildren function to automatically allow every node to have children.
    package {
        import mx.collections.HierarchicalData;
        public class EditableHierarchicalData extends HierarchicalData {
            public function EditableHierarchicalData(value:Object = null) {
                super(value);
             * Override this method to allow any node to have a children.
            override public function canHaveChildren(node:Object):Boolean {
                return true
    Bye,
    Fritz
    PS. I found this solution in an example of ILOG Elixir's OrgChart.

  • Outlook 2011 cannot add account

    Every time I try to add an account in Outlook 2011 the square box blinks to say my command was acknowleged, then nothing happens and I can't get out of the screen unless I alt-cmd-esc to exit the application.

    Sadly that link describes a process that is not correct for a new install.
    When you started Thunderbird you should have been asked to insert your email address and password apparently you did not allow the wizard to complete for some reason so now you have NO account configured.
    So open the Tools menu (alt+T)
    Select the account settings entry.
    At the bottom of the dialog is an account actions button, use it.
    Select Add mail account.
    Entry your name, email address and password when requestyed to set up you account.
    Do not select the get a new account button. Continue is what you need to do.
