Cannot connect to https or encrypted sites (banks, pay-sites etc)

Since two weeks I can no longer connect to most https sites.
Some are very slow but finally show up after a minute or two (like finance.yahoo.com). One bank site (Interactive Brokers) allows me in, albeit very slowly but then they are only half functional.  Some payment sites appear unformatted.   Others just hang like my bank site.  I get into Apple Support https site but then it hangs when I sign in.  Looks like a timeout issue.  Some sites have more patience and I can go further in, others not.
This happened on my 17" MacBook Pro 8,3 with Lion (it is Raided onto two SSD drives, the second having replaced my DVD). The whole system worked flawlessly for about a year.    I upgraded to Mountain Lion hoping this might reset things as before.
This happens with Safari, Chrome or Firefox and also with Internet Explorer from a VirtualMachine with WMware, on the same MPB 17 machine.
This happens with my wireless router as well as with a wireless SimCard using a different provider.
I did the usual tricks of clearing caches etc, resetting Safari and the others both before and after upgrading to MLion.  I had no Firewall on or Parental controls.
I tried to make a new location network, and I tried to change the MTU to a different value.  All to no avail.
THIS DOES NOT happen on two other machines in the office: a Mac PRO  and on a MacBook AIR 10.6.7 and Safari 5.0.4 which briskily open all those sites.
Thus I conclude that it may not the browsers, as they all do not work on the MBP but work on the other machines;  it is not the wireless networks as both do not work with the MBP but they do work with the other machines.  Likewise for the ISPs.
It started right after my bank had a major down time after putting up a new site and software, so I initially thought it was their fault.  And since then it started affecting also the other sites.  Thus I thought it may be a bug within the system, but I have now finished all my ammunitions and now need help.
I noticed that similar problems happened before in this community, as I have seen posts dating a while back and some were resolved with various tricks which have not solved my problem.
Anybody with a suggestion?  Thanks
gp
PS I should add that everything else seem to work ok, except that in one of my datafeeds where I place orders (trading platform) there seems to be a marked delay 2-3 seconds whereby these orders were instantaneous before..)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

    Hi,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • Trying to restore iPad and cannot connect to apple with iPad, is Apple's site down?

I have erased my iPad and am trying to restore. However the device will not connect with apple via network or iTunes. I suspect Apples website is down since I cannot get past the initial user setup screen. Is anyone aware if Apple's server is having issues in this regard?

    Hi..
    Servers are not down..
If the iPad isn't recognized in iTunes and you are using a Windows based computer, try here > iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
And try turning off your router for a few minutes, then turn it back on.

    Hi Ken,
Wow, I've logged into adobe and never seen your response until now.
I need to make the forums more of a daily stop I guess.
Thank you for your response, When I go to the Archives, it states I have none. In addition, previously when I'd tried to move items to the archive, they just disappeared
Currently my desktop is not connecting at all, Everytime I connect, it's states "We have now logged you out" and requests I login again.
    I have of course rebooted,
Gone into taskmanager, killed all the relevant threads,  tried again to login through the desktop, no luck, I'll have to uninstall it, make sure the threads are killed, then reboot it and then reinstall it, but I've not had the time to do that.
On another note, and just as a point of reference, myself, personally, I hate these "cloud" file repositories (not to be confused with adobe cloud services which I love) but the file repositories themselves imho, are a blackhole of resource usage when one doesn't/isn't using them,
Is there a way we can use it more of a "ftp" sort of thing, when I want to I can  put files there?  There is no way to "Download" the repository, no way to download the folders.. only individual files and then it takes I think three different steps before the download starts.. I find this very inhibiting.  Just an fyi. for what it's worth.
Please, feel free to contact me,

    Hi hp323,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that you are unable to get the apps to work on your Photosmart 7520 series printer and that you are unable to log into HP Connected.
HP Connected has only been rolled out to the USA and the UK.  Please try logging into HP's ePrintCenter with a country other than the USA or UK as the your country choice (this can be chosen in the lower left hand corner of the screen, please see the screen shot below).  That will stop the redirection to HP Connected.  What is occurring is you are trying to log into the USA/UK ePrintCenter which automatically redirects.  The redirect is using the country from the computer and is trying to redirect to the HP Connected for your country and it fails as there is not an HP Connected for your country.
As for the apps,  HP is aware of the issue and is working on a solution. It is recommended that you have your product updates set to automatic on the front panel of the printer in order to be able to receive the update when it becomes available. If you wish to discuss this with a phone support agent, please call HP's Cloud Services at 1-855-785-2777 if you live in the USA/Canada region. If you live outside of the USA/Canada region please click the link below to find the Technical Support number for your country/region.

    Result:
    - I can access database from Sqlplus
    - I can't access database from OEM

  • SFTP cannot connect to host

Weird issue here. Probably not DW's fault, but this seemed like the best place to start asking.
I'm using DW CS3 on a laptop running 64-bit Vista Ultimate, and it's connect via WLAN. On this machine I cannot connect to a site over SFTP. I get an immediate "Cannot connect to host" error. All normal FTP sites work fine. I also cannot connect to this SFTP site using CuteFTP on this machine.
However, on another PC, which is running XP Pro and is directly on the LAN (same network), I can connect to the same SFTP site successfully with DW CS3. The site settings are the same: I exported them from one machine to the other.
At first I thought it might be an issue with the Vista machine's Windows Firewall, but I disabled that, and got the same error.
I've Googled a bit for problems pertaining specifically to Vista and/or Wi-fi with SFTP, but so far no luck. I'd prefer to use the laptop as that is my primary work machine, but at least I can use the alternate PC to work on this site until I get this figured out.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Greg

It definitely feels like a firewall kind of issue.  Do you have a firewall set on either of your Dreamweaver installations? You can set this up in the Preferences panel (screenshot attached).
    Hi Josh,
That's what I thought. So I temporarily disabled the firewall (Windows Firewall) on the laptop, but that didn't fix it. (The PC on which it does work has ESET's firewall.)
There's also a firewall on my D-LINK router, but its logs didn't show any blocking in real time.

  • Fix for cannot connect to iTunes store

I have been working on this problem (iTunes for Windows) since April 2012 and finally got it working. I have gone through all the suggested "advanced" trouble shooting procedures with no luck. I even tried opening a work order with them which was a waste of time because they had me retry everything I had already tried and never read my responses. I am attaching all my notes on what I have tried since the beginning. What I think was the issue all along was .net 4. The fix was listed in 12-03-12 where I removed everything, including .net 4, installed an earlier version back when iTunes was still working. I am now running version 11.0.1.12 and it is still working, Good Luck!
    ===============================================================
    12-05-12
Updated to latest version of iTunes 11.0.1.12
Windows had put back .net ver 4
Did repair of .net 4 from control panel, add/remove programs
Did repair of iTunes from control panel, add/remove programs
Went to store tab, review my Apple ID, it displayed my account info
From there went to the music icon, selected one of the drop down options
Store displayed all the music in that category
    Store is still working
    ===============================================================
    Fixed 12-03-12!!!
Removed iTunes, all the apple crap, bonjour and QuickTime
Rebooted and reinstalled an earlier version of  iTunes ver 10.3.1 9 (still didn't work)
Removed .NET (it was ver 4)
Rebooted and retried iTunes, still no iTunes store.
Removed iTunes ver 10.3.1, rebooted and reinstalled iTunes ver 10.3.1 with no .NET stuff at all and it worked.
So iTunes didn't need the .NET stuff to work but it must have been corrupted in a way that won't let it connect to the iTunes store correctly.
Next I am going to upgrade to the latest version without .NET to see if it still works. If not I will fall back.

    Hi Velvalee,
While there may not be specific information about that error, here is an article of steps for troubleshooting connectivity issues with the iTunes store:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store

If that article does not help, there is a link near the bottom for an additional article of advanced troubleshooting.

  • "Configuration Manager cannot connect to the site" after site update from SP1 to R2

Our dev SCCM environment only has a single primary site with a remote SQL database.  Initially, the dev primary site had SP1 Beta (5.00.7782.1000) installed but as everyone is aware there is no upgrade path available to SP1 or R2 from Beta; so, we uninstalled
the site and removed the database, re-installed SP1 non-Beta (5.00.7804.1000), then proceeded to update all devices with the latest client agent.  Afterwards, we attempted to upgrade the site from SP1 non-Beta (5.00.7804.1000) to R2 (5.00.7958.1000).
All seemed well until we attempt to open the Configuration Manager console and we get the following error message:
Configuration Manager cannot connect to the site (Site Name)
The Configuration Manager Administrator console could not connect to the Configuration Manager site database. Verify the version of the console is compatible with the version of the site server you are connecting to and then try to connect again.
So we tried reinstalling the console directly from here...
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\tools\ConsoleSetup\AdminConsole.msi"
still the same error message persisted, so we tried installing it from here...
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\tools\ConsoleSetup\ConsoleSetup.exe"
still the same error message persisted, so then we tried installing it directly from the R2 (5.00.7958.1000) installation media, and afterwards the same error message persisted....
All along, we were checking the AdminConsole log from here:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminConsole\AdminUILog\SmsAdminUI.log"
    Here are the contents:
    [4, PID:4836][04/22/2014 15:21:10] :Property: 'Features'\r\nSystem.Management.ManagementException\r\nNot found \r\n   at System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode)

of the site server you are connecting to and then try to connect again.'\r\nMicrosoft.ConfigurationManagement.ManagementProvider.SmsConnectionWithDetailException\r\nThe Configuration Manager Administrator console could not connect to the Configuration Manager

    connection)
at Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.AdminConsole.SmsSiteConnectionNode.GetConnectionManagerInstance(String connectionManagerInstance)\r\nNo details are available for this error.\r\n
Once again, we validated we could connect to the SQL database from this box, and that the console was at the same version as the site.  Any help or guidance with getting our access to the console restored after the SP1 to R2 upgrade would be greatly
    appreciated.

From the Primary Site Server, I tried uninstalling the Admin Console and re-installing using:
    consolesetup.exe /q TargetDir="%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Configuration Manager" EnableSQM=0 DefaultSiteServerName=<SiteServerName>
Of course replacing <SiteServerName> with the FQDN of my Primary Site Server.  Console installed successfully however the same error message persists.
Also tried installing the console on a clean Windows Server 2008 R2 installation.  I tried it from the R2 (5.00.7958.1000) installation media, from the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\tools\ConsoleSetup\" both without any luck, the
same error message persists.  I verified I could ping the FQDN of the site server also, and that the firewall between the two permits communication over the ports listed here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427328.aspx
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cannot connect console to site server

    Hi Guys,
We did a restart on our sccm server today and after the reboot we could not connect to it anymore via the admin console on a remote computer. It still works on the server just not remote computers.
Tried to troubleshoot using guides online but have got nowhere.
I hope someone can help us here.
    Thanks,
    Richard

seems like ,cannot connect to wmi. can you try performing the below steps to make sure if you are able to connect wmi namespace remotely ?
Click Start, click Run, and then type wbemtest.
Click Connect, type \\siteserver\root\sms, and then click Login.
Click Enum Classes, click Recursive, and then click OK.
In the Query Result list, double-click SMS_ProviderLocation.
Click Instances, and then double-click the line that contains the target site code. For example, SMS_ProviderLocation.SiteCode="<var style="box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px;">xxx</var>."
In the Properties section, locate the NamespacePath line. You may have to double-click this line to see the whole line.
Copy the NamespacePath value to the clipboard. For example, copy the following value:
    \\<var style="box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px;">server_name</var>\root\sms\site_<var style="box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px;">xxx</var>
    reference via https://support.microsoft.com/kb/317872?wa=wsignin1.0
is it happening to all users remotely ? any changes or patches applied to the server ?
