  • Now Mavericks is installed, I cannot access my downloads folder.

Now Mavericks is installed, I cannot access my downloads folder. How do I click on items in the folder and get them to open? When I attempt to click on the items, nothing happens. Before Mavericks, I could click and get the folders to open.  Yes, I have used three different devices to try to click on them, so it is not my mouse/treackpad/Wacom pen. I am getting very frustrated with this new OS - this is not the only thing bothering me.

  • HT1551 I cannot find the rental we just paid for, and there is no downloads folder..?

My husband hit the wrong button, so now we supposedly have rented a movie, but it's not downloaded.  We are prompted to go to the downloads folder, but we cannot find one.  Help?

A number of people have reported similar issues recently, many appear to have found a discrepancy of some kind in their account settings and making changes to these settings or simply resetting them has resolved the matter.
Check your account details are correct, check that you are using the correct details for Location, Region and Time Zone. You may want to change these settings and then change them back to see if that helps.
You might also try logging out of and then back into your iTunes account (Settings > iTunes Store > Apple ID’s > Sign Out) and restarting your router. (Some have reported that after doing this, they need to check for rentals even though it may report that there aren’t any, after which rentals once again appear in the ‘movies’ feature)
Rentals should appear under their own heading in the ‘Movies’ feature, you might also check at Settings > iTunes Store > Check For Rentals.

  • HT201364 I've downloaded Mavericks, but cannot set up the installation.

I've downloaded Mavericks, but cannot set up the installation.  The clock just keeps turning, and I can't continue or exit.  Any idea of what to do next? I believe my system meets the requirements, although I'm not real sure of the age (I think I purchased mid 2007 or early 2008).

  • Cannot add new folder, e.g., "Downloads," to the Dock "Download

A few days ago, my "Downloads" folder disappeared from the right side of the Dock. The downloads folder still appears on the left side of my hard drive menu (and 'my computer' menu), and does contain the items I've downloaded; however, if I attempt to move the download folder icon to the right side of the Dock, it 'evaporates' when I drag it out of the menu onto the desktop. At one point, a question mark appeared over the downloads folder, but now both the question mark and downloads folder have disappeared from the right side of the Dock.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Kappy for the info. I trashed the downloads folder by mistake. went to my home folder and
dragged it to the right side of the dock. all's well.

  • Cannot delete items from Downloads folder

I was doing some maintenance on my iMac and noticed that in one account there were a large number of downloads. I logged into that account and tried to delete the files but they would not delete. I have Parental Controls enabled (only time limits) but not sure if that's the problem.

Parental controls should not be a problem. Have you tinkered with permissions on the Download folder on that account? prehaps by using "apply to enclosed items" button? That could have resulted in symptoms you are seeing. Run the following terminal command from the affected account and see if it makes a difference. Copy and paste, do not retype please.
    chmod -RN ~/Downloads/*

  • I cannot open downloaded files and they do not appear in the download folder

Up until yesterday everything was fine. All of a sudden when i try to download anything via firefox it shows it is downloading it completes the download but when i click the downloaded file in the download section or try to click open containing folder nothing happens. Also, I have checked the download folder and no file is present there. I have tried everything in the faqs and they do not seem to work thank you.

Firefox doesn't use the IE Favorites folder.<br />
Firefox stores the bookmarks in the Firefox Profile Folder

If you no longer have access to that old computer then you can try to import the IE favorites or export the IE favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in Firefox.

  • How do I set a different folder than the Windows MyDocuments/Downloads folder? I do not use 'My Documents' at all, all my saved files go to other hard drives for storage, and I do not want to bother with the My Docs route. I used to have downloads set to

I want to set a different folder from the My Documents/Downloads folder for Firefox to put everything I download, like I used to have it. I recently rebuilt my computer and reinstalled everything from WinXP to security software to Firefox, and I cannot find any options anywhere to set a different folder like I used to have it... with the same software, other than it being a newer iteration of Ff. So tell me, am I losing my mind so bad that I just can't remember how I did it before, or have things changed so much that what I want is no longer possible? Please, someone tell me how to set it to do what I want, I can't stand to have what I do on my computer dictated by programmers who only think that they know what people want. If that sounds a little angry, I apologize with the disclaimer that I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and therefore cannot handle frustration... and this kind of thing frustrates me to the point of rage.

  • Why setting the download folder ton an external HDD doesn't work? the downloaded files goes to My Documents (Windows)?

Why setting the download folder ton an external HDD doesn't work? the downloaded files goes to My Documents (Windows)?

I did what you said and updated FF, now the download goes to the external HDD that I specified, but now FF bugs, it freezes (not responing) :s
I reinstalled it but it doesn't fix the problem. I don't know what to do :(

  • I've set Mozilla to ask where before downloading a file, but it keeps going directly to the downloads folder

I recently upgraded from a 32bit XP Pro Windows machine to a 64bit 7 Pro Windows machine. In XP, Mozilla was set to ask where to save something before downloading and it always worked. Windows 7 Pro Mozilla is also set to ask where before downloading something, but it never asks. It just goes right to the download folder. Once something's in the download folder I can't even move the item from there to somewhere else. Do I need a special add-on or something for Win 7 Pro?

You can check for problems with preferences.
Rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js and user.js files to reset all prefs to the default value.

  • After having the Apple Store erase my HD, now I need authentication and password to move things from a downloads folder to another folder in Finder. WHY? And how can I change this?

I'm trying to move things from the downloads folder into a folder that is over there on the left in the sidebar. Every time I try to move something, I get this message and then I have to give my password. I didn't have to do that previously and I sure don't want to do it now, either. I've checked and checked and cannot find where I would go to change this setting. Does anyone know where I should look?
The Apple Store erased my HD on Friday and I had to restore from Time Machine. my OS is Mavericks and I'm on a MacBook Pro.

That has been like that since Firefox 3.0 was released in June 2008 - 7 major version releases thus far with it like that and the developers haven't changed it - so I wouldn't count on it.
When I want to save a duplicate bookmark, I just "grab" the website image in the Location Bar and drag it into the Bookmarks Sidebar, into the folder where I want it placed. On Windows and Linux, { Ctrl + B } opens the sidebar and then just drag.

  • Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
    0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.
