  • Can't get lvm/luks to boot - cannot find root partition

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a dm-crypt on top of lvm to boot but without success so far. I followed http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sys … r_dm-crypt and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … AID_or_LVM, everything works fine (I can mount the partition) but when I try to boot from it, it cannot find the crypted partition and fails.
    USELVM="yes"
HOOKS="base udev usb usbinput lvm2 encrypt filesystems"
    root=/dev/mapper/sda2 cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:root2-lvol0 ro
    jan@jan ~/src/xf86-video-ati $ ll /dev/mapper/

    crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 62 21. Feb 2008 control
    brw------- 1 root disk 254, 0 21. Feb 2008 root
    brw------- 1 root disk 254, 1 21. Feb 2008 root2-lvol0
    brw------- 1 root disk 254, 2 21. Feb 2008 sda2
/dev/mapper/root is my current encrypted / without lvm
The boot process successfully identifies the lvm /dev/mapper/root2-lvol0 and continues with hook 'encrypt' but doesn't ask me for a passphrase but goes on to hook 'filesystems' and fails then because it can't mount the correct root-partition obviously.
There's only /dev/mapper/root2-lvol0 and /dev/mapper/control when I'm in the rescue sh from initrd.
Anyone got that combination to work?

Reboot, at the sound of the chime (not before) depress the option key, when the startup manager appears choose OSX.

  • Initramfs cannot find root partition in initramfs

    Hi,
I recently changed the Mainboard in my PC and ran into some GRUB issues afterwards. After reinstalling it, it at least is able to boot the kernel.
But when i select my installation I`m dropped in to the recovery shell with the message "Unable to find root device". In the recovery shell i cannot find it either, in /dev the whole SSD isnt listed. This confuses me, since the kernel is on a partition of that disk and obiously loaded already and i can access the device from a liveiso without any problems.
My partitions are setup as follows:
    sda: (the missing device)
    1: /boot/efi
    2: /boot
    3: /
    4: swap
    sdb:
    1: /home
Could the error be produced by the fact that sda is an SSD?

That worked! I generated new initramfss using mkinitcpio (was that necessary) and now the normal boot works, either.

  • Cannot find Bootcamp partition on restart

    Hi everyone,
I have successfully partitioned and installed windows operating systems on the Mac platform before. But recently on my 13" MacBook Pro, when I partition the drive using bootcamp, this all goes well and asks to start installation. But when the windows files have been read from the disk and it asks to use a partition the "Bootcamp" labled partition is not there.
    Thanks

Ok, so far so good. So we're going to create a new hybrid MBR with different parameters than your present one.
    In gdisk terminal type
r  then press enter - to take you to the recovery menu
    type h then enter
you'll receive a warning that hybrid MBR's are flaky and dangerous. That's ok.
It then asks you to type from one to three partition numbers, you should type
    2 3 4  -  That's 2 space 3 space 4  -  press enter
it will then ask if you want to include the EFI partition as first partition - answer Y
you will then get each partition number displayed one at a time.
for partitions 2 and 3 just accept default settings (by pressing the enter key) but answer N to making them bootable.
When partition 4 is displayed accept default selections but make sure that partition hex code for type is set to 07 (but it probably will be).
When asked whether partition 4 should be marked bootable answer Y - press enter
Once finished and back to the normal prompt type w and press enter, to write the changes to disk.
Confirm the changes when asked (with a Y and enter).
Once done type q and enter to quit gdisk.
Close terminal and reboot holding Alt key. If Windows option appears try to boot it.
Please post any errors shown or if you're not sure about something, ask :-)

  • Windows cannot find my boot camp partition in set up.

I have been trying to install windows 7 via boot camp on my new imac. Every time I get to the install screen it asks where do I want to install windows.  I choose the boot camp partition and format it as it says.  The computer than tells me that set up cannot find a partition to install on.  In the boot camp installation guide it says that the partition will be partition 3 but mine says partition 4.  Does this have anything to do with why I am not able to install. Please help.

You will need to uninstall the software using the HP scrubber.
To do so, perform the following steps:
    1. Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ and then click on “HP Uninstaller”
    2. Next click “Continue”
    3. Highlight the device on the left pane.
    4. Press and hold Control+Alt+Cmd on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on “Uninstall”.
    5. After you do this, you will see a pop up that asks you if you want to uninstall all HP software. Please note, that in doing this, it will remove any other HP printers that you also have installed.
    6. Click “continue” and wait for the program to finish.
    7. After it completes, reboot your computer.
Once the computer is back on, do the following steps:
    1. Go into “System Preferences” and then select “Print & Fax”
    2. Right click (or control+click) in the rectangle listing your printers and then select “Reset Printing System”. This is going to delete all of your printers.
After you have reset the printing system, go to the following link and download the most recent version of software for your operating system.
HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Drivers - OS X 10.8
Once it is downloaded, install the software and everything should work now! If it doesn’t, just let me know and I will see what else I can do to try and help resolve this issue for you.
If I have been helpful or if you’d like to say thanks you can click the white star under my name to give me Kudos.  I really appreciate it!
    Best of luck,
    Kyle

I don't see any messages of loading nvidia ("NVRM") or nouveau. Are you sure that you have installed a module that is compatible with your current kernel?
You'll also need to patch your ACPI handle or the nouveau/nvidia driver will refuse to load at all, see https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/2 (this is specific to some machines, your Lenovo G580 machine included)

  • Upgrade from server 10.4.11 to 10.5 cannot find OS

    Greetings all,
I have an Xserve running 10.4.11 and I am trying to upgrade it to 10.5. When I run the setup assistant it initially doesn't see the OS RAID partition (two 500GB drives, RAID level 1). If I open the disk utility and select the parent of the RAID partition, the disk becomes visible in the select target screen, however after it runs through the installation pre-calculation I get a message telling me that the setup assistant cannot find OS X on the installation target.
I am at a loss here, the mirror is healthy and works properly but I cannot get the installer past this point.
The only offhand thought I have is that it might have something to do with the RAID version--Disk Utility tells me that the mirror is "Version 1.0" and gives me the option to update to version 2.0) but even after several hours worth of searching I can't find any information on this distinction and I am not about to try it if there is a chance that the upgrade still fails and I'm left with a 10.4 install that cannot boot.
Any thoughts or ideas would be immensely appreciated, thanks in advance.

I had similar problems upgrading same configuration even after converting to version 2 RAID sw.
I think I cloned boot drive to non RAID ext. drive, did the upgrade and cloned back to freshly in 10.5 configured RAID 1 setup.
Your milage may vary. diskutil (man diskutil) can be used to convert RAID v1 ->v2.

We had been getting a successful backup once or twice a week which showed completed (with no mentioned of warnings) but now it regularly shows completed with warnings as noted above.
We did a manual full backup of the DC to a different external drive a few days ago and that completed without warnings and the backup shows:  E: Completed 63.38 Full - VSS Copy Backup Successful, 8/27/13 3:35 PM - 4:43 PM. Data Transferred 63.38
On a side note, we can view the logs in the windows/logs/windowsserverbackup directory but when we attempt to view the details of a log file through the Local Backup Console for any log which shows completed with errors, we get a "MMC has detected an
error in the snapin and will unload and then it shows Object referenced not set to instance of an object."  The manual backup noted above that was successful is able to be viewed through the Local Backup Console without this error.
Any idea as to why this is failing during the scheduled backups?  This hosts a database that we need to have regular successful backups.

    15. regsvr32 msxml.dll
    16. regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    17. regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Please let us know if any command failed to be performed with an error.
If issue still exists, have a try with the step it provided "VSSADMIN Resize ShadowStorage" to enlarge the shadow storage.
Also you could test to delete all old Shadow Copies by acccessing <Drive> Properties --> Shaodow Copies --> Delete Now. This will remove all your backup information so if it is not acceptable, just skip this step.

  • How do I reinstall Lion if I get a new hard drive?  My mac came with Leopard and I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Leopard.  I have the OS and Applications disks for Leopard but I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard.  I would like to perform a clean install of Lion on the new hard drive and restore some data from my Time Machine backup.  I am not looking to restore the current image to my new hard drive.  I have not yet removed the exisiting hard drive nor have I wiped my data.

The only way to do that is to buy a New SL Retail DVD. Or you could buy the Lion Install USB thumb drive from Apple for $69.
You must have SL installed to then install Lion or have a thumb drive with the Lion installer.
You could also create a Lion USB Recovery thumb drive using Lion Disk Assistant. But you need to have Lion already installed and the Lion RecoveryHD Partition on your drive to make the Recovery thumb drive.

  • Boot from DVD but cannot find hard drive now

just updated to 10.7.3, then cannot boot from hard drive. I boot from DVD and cannot find hard drive now

Did the 10.7.3 update complete the installation process?
Some updates, when being installed and applied can restart (but not fully start up) the machine a couple of times.
I'd restart your machine and give it a few uninterrupted minutes to see if it boots up normally. Depending on the specs of your iMac, the remapping of app shortcuts etc can take a little while to complete (but not an excessive amount of time).
It is unlikely the update caused your hard drive to fail.
If your iMac doesn't boot up, restart and boot into the recovery partition of Lion by holding down both the cmd & R keys while booting. This will run Lion Recovery which will allow you to repair your Hard Drive, reinstall or install a fresh copy of Lion (network access is required).
If this fails, boot from the recovery DVD and launch Disk Utility from the Tools option in the toolbar and see if your hard drive is listed in Disk Utility. If your hard drive is not listed, there is a hard drive problem and you'll need to speak to Apple Tech Support to arrange a repair.
    Hope this helps

  • MDT2012 - Deployment failed, the system cannot find the file specified

    Hi everybody.
First, excuse me for my english, i think it's not the best thing I'm able to do, but now, I REALLY need help.
I encounter issues with my MDT 2012 Update 1 platform.
I have 5 systems to capture. All systems have 3 partitions (System, softwares, data). Capture is working fine for all parts.
In my Task Sequence, to deploy these images (C, D and E parts), I use a script after the "Install Operating System" which runs imagex to deploy the WIM images for D: and E:.
The script is the following :
    "%DeployRoot%\Tools\x64\imagex" /apply "%DeployRoot%\Operating Systems\D_Drive\D_Drive.wim" 1 %DDrive%"
But, for some images, the task fails on the "D" drive deployement. The wizard shows the following error :
Litetouch deployment dailed, return code = -214767259 0x80004005
Failed to run the action: InstallD (ie : the script above)
The system cannot find the file specified. (Error: 00000002; Source: Windows)
The error is on my task which uses imagex to deploy my D and E WIM.
So I looked to see if the file's path was the good one.
    And it is !!!
Wizard says that the file couldn't be find, but the file is existing, and in the good path.
For your information, there is no problem when I don't use multicast. Everything is working fine on unicast, not on multicast.
I even encounter this issue if I use my MDT server and my computers on the same switch.
Any help would be gratefull, my client gives me the week to resolve the issue.
    Thanks

  • ORA-20100 The system cannot find the file specified 0RA-06512

I can create and deploy a .NET stored procedure but when I run it either from Visual Studio 2005 Oracle Explorer or TOAD or SQLPlus I get the following:
ORA-20100: The system cannot find the file specified.

It is basically the same C# code as the OTN sample except for accessing a table in my database.
I found a forum thread dated 2006 with basically the same error message and it said the problem was fixed in Oracle Database patched to 10.2.0.2 but I can't find such a patch for 10g R2 Enterprise.

  • I want to downgrade to mavericks and cannot find os x download anywhere

I want to downgrade from Yosemite to Mavericks I did not do a time machine backup before I upgraded to Yosemite.
My mac book is so new I have no problem doing a clean install there are no personal files than can't be easily replaced.
I cannot find a copy of OS X Mavericks anywhere. Where can I get Mavericks

It's no longer available. You need to do the following:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Random cannot find root device at boot

Every so often when I boot my arch install I get the error saying that it cannot find my root device.  After a reboot sometimes everything is fine other times it will will repeat.  It seems to be about a 40-60 chance that the error will occur.  This same issue is also happening with a co-worker.  I began to notice this issue when I upgraded my laptop with an SSD which my co-worker also has.  I am beginning to wonder if it is related to the SSD because I have not had this issue until then.  Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the Arch Linux forums.
In order to get proper support for your issues, you need to be much more explicit about your problems.  An inability to find the root device can be caused by all kinds of things.  So simply saying that you switched to an SSD and started to experience these problems is really not anything to go on.  You need to also give a description of how your system is actually set up.  That is, how is it partitioned?  Is it the only OS on the machine?  Do you use LVM, mdadm, Luks/dm-crypt, btrfs, etc?
These forums are quite active and there are all kinds of people here who are willing to help.  But you have to help us help you.  We cannot see your machine, and the very nature of Arch Linux brings about vast differences in how each individual machine is configured.

  • Raid Admin Cannot Find XRaid

I have a G4 XServe running 10.4.11 and an XRaid divided into 2 partitions, both raid 5. Recently the second partition disappeared. The problem is that Raid Admin 1.3.3 cannot find the raid. We are part of a large network, where none of the IT people speak Mac. I have found out that the Raid IP is a 169.254.x.x address and our XServe is on a different VLan and Subnet.
Question 1: I have one Cat 5 cable going to the top controller and a fixed IP for the correct VLan and Subnet, how do I change the IP on the XRaid without being able to see it in Raid Admin?
Question 2: Do I need a separate IP and connection to administer the bottom controller.

Hello, Dennis Goff, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
+Question 1: I have one Cat 5 cable going to the top controller and a fixed IP for the correct VLan and Subnet, how do I change the IP on the XRaid without being able to see it in Raid Admin?+
You can't. Without RAID Admin access your only control over the box comes from things like resetting and rebooting from scratch.
Can you clarify what you mean by "correct VLAN and subnet" here? Do you mean 169.254 or correct for your company's infrastructure?
You need a machine on the 169.254. IP range which is self assigned - essentially "no IP". The easiest way to do this is to attach a notebook set to DHCP directly to the RAID and it will self assign 169.254 as well and then the RAID Admin will be able to search and find it. Whatever IP range the ports are on you will need a machine that can speak to that IP range to communicate with it. The 169.254 range is not accessible from regular assigned IP ranges because it is reversed for special use. Note that the RAID Admin software is Java and will run on virtually anything and does not need to be on the Xserve.
+Question 2: Do I need a separate IP and connection to administer the bottom controller.+
No, a single ethernet connection is enough for complete RAID admin. The other ethernet light will be yellow in RAID Admin instead of green but if that doesn't bother you then don't bother.
