Trying to edit using InCopy but can't download the file from the designer because I get this message: cannot handle request because a modal dialog or alert is active

That means exactly that: there is another dialog on the screen that asks for an OK, or Cancel etc. Dismiss this dialog first.

I'm having bunch of indesign CS6 files. I have written piece of code in C# which opens indesign files & exports those files to xml & pdf. If I run the exe, it works properly. But when I schedule it via task scheduler (runs at point of time without
human intervention), it throws an error "Cannot handle the request because a modal dialog or alert is active" which results in failure of my process. This error keeps me annoying. So how to over come this error?

Modal dialog or alert is active when opening a doc.

lately whenever I open an indesign CS4 existing document a tiny alert window pops up that is too small to read what it says. when trying to reopen the doc the message appears "Cannot handle the request because a modal dialog or alert is active"
I am not doing anything besides opening a document. and the only way to get rid of the tiny alert window and open the doc is to hit return. any idea whats happening and how to stop this?

There are no startup scripts, just the out of the box program.

When starting SQL Server 2008 R2 it hangs , and I cannot exit...so when trying to logoff to reset I get the following "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio cannot shut down because a modal dialog is active. Close the active dialog and try again"Any

I have 2008 R2 SP2 installed on my Windows 7 Machine which is also fully updated. The marked answer above is clearly not the solution.
The fix I had posted before did not work. It appeared to work temporarily, but now I am back to the same invisible dialogue. I have not been able to identify any pattern by which this is triggered. I can have an entire day without this
issue and then it appears the next.
The invisible modal dialogue is definitely the connection dialogue. The only way out is to hit the escape key to close it, but then I am no better off without an ability to connect to a server. The dialogue is still invisible when I re-open it.
However, even as I type this post, I have just gotten the dialogue to appear after restarting Management Studio, hitting escape, then clicking connect again. That same pattern failed just minutes ago numerous times. Again, I can't find any pattern.

Cannot handle request?

I'm working in InDesign CS3. I'm working on a file that is 64 pages. It's a file with pages of ads so there are a lot of fonts and logos in it. When I go to create a PDF, InDesign crashes and I get this error message, "Cannot handle the request because a modal dialog or alert is active." Can someone please point me in the right direction as to a fix to this? I've searched the forums and yes, there are issues with this error but none that I can do the suggested fix for. (because I don't want to do the scripting that needs to be done for the suggested fix-it's gets too much into the guts of the computer software)

Sounds like you asked InDesign to open Acrobat to view the PDF after it
was created and you already had a dialog box open there.

Do you see any exception on the server side ? May be endpoint is throwing some exception. If you use JAX-WS 2.1 the error diagnostics are much better.

Cannot complete request because of a disk error

HI all,
I just upgrade to CS4 creative suite on my iMac and using for about 2 months. Everything is fine and great until recently.
Suddenly, I will always get this message "Cannot complete request because of a disk error" when I try to open or save the file in Photoshop CS4. Then, the program will freeze. Sometime re launch it will solve the problem but mostly not. I will need to force quit or restart my computer to make it go away. Also, when I start up the program, it takes a little bit longer than before to read the preference file. It will stay saying "reading preferences" for like about half to one minute.
First, I think there is a problem on my HD. I used disk utility to check it and the HD was fine. Also, the problem only happen in Photoshop but not others programs.
I really want to find out what's the cause of it.
Does anyone can help me figure out the problem? Thanks!

you need to BACK up your data now
then add "disk error" to your search (it has been covered before)
you could have "bad blocks" on one of your disks that a scratch disk is hitting, or a file written over a bad area that can no longer be accessed
Basically, I would get the BACKUP done, then "Carbon Copy Cloner" clone the hard driver over to a new drive if you are lucky, the clone will get you back to work
If the problem is hitting on your Scratch Disk, you could try to "zerowrite" it to repair it

How to create modal dialog to suspend menu activity until process completes

I have a Swing application with several tabs, buttons, and menu items.
When the user pushes some of the buttons, a background process is kicked off that may take some time to complete.
When the process is finished, I get notification from a socket that the process has completed.
I then display a dialog that notifies the user that the process has completed.
All this is in place.
What I need to do is to block the user from pushing any other buttons, selecting tabs or menu items while the process is in progress.
My thought was to display a modal dialog with a message and no buttons to remove it,
and then have the application dispose the dialog when I get the completion response.
Is there a way to do this with a JOptionPane or some variant or do I need to create a modal dialog from scratch?
Any suggestions?

I was playing around with this a bit and I think it can be done.
In the main class of my application, I have a variable

mainFrame = this.getFrame():
In the page where I want to disable the application, I have the following:
parent.mainFrame.setEnabled(false);
(parent is a reference to the main class)
When I get a response back from the socket, I can set
parent.mainFrame.setEnabled(true);
This seems to do what I want, but the fly in the ointment is that it disables the entire application.
If I don't get a response, then the application is hung.
Can't use the "X" button to close the application.
I think I can work on some refinements from the clues given to make it work.

Modal dialog issue - very urgent

Hi everyone,
i'm working with indesign application under asp.net. I'm using Interop.InDesign.dll. I'm able to open Indesign, but when i try to change UserInteractionLevel, then application returns error "Cannot handle the request because a modal dialog or alert is active." I can't see what modal dialog is opened because, i can't see Indesign window. It is runing in asp.net context.
When i'm opening manually Indesign then none of the modal dialogs is active.
My code:

I have similar issues.
Initially this was caused by the splash dialog that appears the first time a user launches InDesign. Logging in with the credientals used to launch InDesign, and checking the "Dont show again" checkbox cleared it up for me.
Later, I ran into the problem again when InDesign was trying to recover some autosaved files.
This was cleared up by deleting the recovered file information from the accounts AppData folder.
I'm now getting this error again, but so far I dont know why. I have no Idea what modal dialog InDesign is trying to display. How can I tell?
I've got to say, I'm very disapointed with this behavior.
If a programmer sets ScriptPreferences.UserInteractionLevel to InDesign.idUserInteractionLevels.idNeverInteract; this should inform InDesign that its launch is part of an automated process; there is no user available to press anything, and there is likely not a desktop to display anything.
It is far more important for InDesign to respect the ScriptPreferences.UserInteractionLevel than to try and recover documents or display a welcome dialog.
But since we are stuck with this exception, I have the following questions:
Is there a way to programmatically dismiss the splash "Welcome" dialog via script command?
Is there a way to programmatically respond to the dialog that is displayed when InDesign has recovered documents?
Is there a way to programmatically determine what modal dialog is causing the exception? (app.Dialogs is empty)

Well this morning I woke up to see that my site hosted on Windows Azure was producing 50X errors and in general being incredibly slow (up to 60 seconds response time).
Now after looking through the DetailedErrors folder I see that the error received is:
HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration. If the page is a script, add a handler. If the file should be downloaded, add a MIME map.
I tried creating a new test website and host it and guess what? I receive the exact same error here as well.

Feature request: make the "transform" dialogs non-modal

Currently, the transformation dialogs accessible at Object>Transform are modal. I'm talking about "Move…", "Rotate…", "Reflect…", and so forth. These dialogs, when open, lock the user out of any interaction with the artboard other than the "preview" button, until the dialog is closed.
Even more problematically, they lock the scroll and zoom factor of the current user view, so that there's no way to inspect how a precise numeric adjustment affects a part of the layout outside the current window (or within the current window but very small inside it) without committing the change, inspecting it, and then later undoing if necessary. This creates cycles of tedious user adjustments (especially on small monitors) that really should be possible in one user step, by toggling the preview button on and off, and zooming/scrolling.
This is contrary to most modern UI design principles, which suggest avoiding modes unless they are truly and meaningfully necessary. I don't think this is one of those cases. Photoshop made dialogs for adjustment layers non-modal with CS4, and while there are issues with the newer interface (see John Nack's Configurator workaround), I think it's a win overall. Illustrator needs to catch up in this regard. I realize there is some pretty serious refactoring involved to do this, but it has to be do-able.

Just so you know you're not alone; I've been complaining about AI's archaic dependency upon modal dialogs for many years.
...I'm fully aware of the Transform panel...observing that there's another way to do it...doesn't really address any of my points here...
But it's not "another way to do it," because the functionality is not the same. The modal dialogs include crucial functionality that cannot be done in the Transform palette. For example, moving something in terms of distance and direction (diagonally), instead of merely by lame X and Y factors. Or transforming about an off-object center of transformation, rather than merely by the 9-point proxy.
...the "preview" isn't updated on keyboard entry, and the "preview" checkbox need to be manually toggled on and off...
But the preview does refresh (and does not have to be toggled) in response to keyboard entry if that keyboard entry is by the arrow keys. For example: Select something, doubleClick the Scale tool, click your cursor in the Uniform value field, and tap the up/down arrow keys (or press and hold them). The value will increment and the preview will update with each key tap. (Be sure to teach that to your students.)
That does not, of course, negate the complaint, but it does ameleorate it somewhat. The increments are preset; there are no preference settings for them. (Don't even get me started on preferences that should be doc-specific settings, and vice-versa).
Nor does the valid point that problematic dialogs abound beyond just those associated with the transform tools, but I do agree with it. For just one of many examples, it's nothing short of idiotic that the Scale fields of Transform Each do not have a uniform scaling lock, and that only percentage fields are provided and no explicit dimension fields. Illustrator is quite saturated with such inconsistencies and half-baked implementations.
But...you're often arguing with the emotionally attached Illustrator devoted here. So I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. It would probably be more effective teaching Illustrator's shortcomings to your beginning students. Probably one of the easiest ways to explain the problem of modal dialogs is to point out that you can't change the current selection with the dialog open.

If you are working with a file you modified in Lightroom, you should go to the Lightroom Photo menu and choose Edit in... and the version of Photoshop you want to open it in.
There a dialog will ask if you want to transfer the LR settings you made to your photo when you open in Photoshop.

HiRISE JP2 Images fail to open in CS6 (64bit) - Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file.

Unable to open any of the HiRISE images within PS CS6. Receive the following error: "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."
The files are NOT corrupt as I can open them in IrfanView and ACDSee, just not Photoshop CS6.

I downloaded a small HiRise JP2 and used Preview to export as Tiff. It opens up just fine.
Apparently the JP2 takes up an awful lot of memory uncompressing, and Photoshop gives up.

I also got the same error on the file in Message one, so saving it as a tiff would work.
