Cannot log and transfer canon 5D mark3 into FCP
Cannot log and transfer canon 5D mark3 into FCP
Or use Compressor...or 5DtoRGB...or EditReady...lots of options.
Convert to ProRes 422...not HQ. HQ will only take up more space, with zero quality gain.
But yes...log and transfer does not support this camera. FCP was discontinued before it was released.

I cannot log and transfer clips that are longer than 5 minutes.
Hello,
I am trying to log and transfer several clips from my Canon Vixia HF S11 camcorder. When I attempt to transfer a clip into Final Cut Express that is longer than 5 minutes, it stops right when it is about to finishe and says, "Unknown Error." Due to the volume of my HD footage, I am working on an external hard drive with ample space. Could this be the problem? Should I attempt to transfer these longer clips onto my MacBook hard drive? Thank you very much for you help.
-SamanthaUse Disk Utility (in your Applications>Utilities folder) to erase the drive and reformat as Mac OS Extended. There are differing opinions regarding whether or not you should select journaling. With media drives, I tend not to. (This process will, of course, erase what's on the drive presently.)

I cannot log and transfer videos larger than 4 gb
I have final cut express 4.0.1, Macbook pro intel core duo 2 ghz, 2 gb ram, Canon HF100.
I saved my raw video onto a external drive, which is also my scratch disk. I have been able to log and transfer short videos fine. When I try to do this for longer videos, I get an exclamation point on my long and transfer window and my clip transfer is in idle.
I have noticed that when the long videos (over 5 min) are transferring, their sizes get bigger but then max out at 4 GB.
My audio is set to plain and I have the latest OS. I also changed my recording settings to match my playback settings = RT safe, video quality dynamic, frame rate dynamic.
Please help. How is the external formatted?
It should be Mac OS Extended.
Most drives are pre-formatted to suit Windows FAT32, file sizes are restricted if so.

Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6
I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
I would appreciate any suggestions.#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

Cannot log and transfer long udma card files
I have started to do some longer recordings on the sony z5 with udma cards that are log and transferring to final cut. Last week I had 1:07 minute file that could only transfer 58:00 minutes worth. I did another test today and recorded for 1:10 minutes and only 51 minutes transfered? The file size is 10gb and 9.57 gb for the other?
Well, this may not be the same for you, but I think I had a similar problem with my Canon FS200. It was a hassle, but I was able to get the footage. I bought an Apple Product, it was called something along the lines of Quicktime Converter Mpeg-2, it's an upgrade for final cut and it works automatically. But in addition to that, I downloaded a free software from the internet called Mpeg Streamclip. You then open the file with that software, and hit "Export to quicktime". That SHOULD work for you, it did for me.

CANNOT LOG AND TRANSFER FILES FROM PANASONIC P2 CARD
I rented a Panasonic Ag-hpx170 to shoot footage for my son's high school today. After filling two p2 cards with video, I transferred the content to my hard drive (exactly as described in Tom Wolsky's book, and as coached by the video rental company). I have two folders on my drive from the two p2 files, but when I try to bring them into FInal Cut Express (4.0.1) , I get the message:
"HUNTER INTERVIEWS CARD 1" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
There's a whole day of footage in there, and I'm panicked that I've lost it (and that the next two days' shooting will be ruined, as well).
The footage was shot in 720x25. I set the "easy settings" on FCE to the Apple Intermediate codec format, using HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p25.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm starting to really worry I'm going to disappoint a lot of kids!Well, this may not be the same for you, but I think I had a similar problem with my Canon FS200. In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk? With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files. If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).
Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
Folder structure is
AVCHD
BDMV
CLIPINF
.CPI files
Index.bdm
Movieobj.bdm
PLAYLIST
.MPL file
STREAM
.MTS files
AVF_INFO
3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
DCIM
101MSDCF
empty
MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
Thank you in advance

Mavericks and Final Cut Pro 7 - Log and Transfer crashes
Hi all. I (perhaps unintelligently) upgraded to OSX Mavericks on my Mac Pro while working on a project in Final Cut Pro 7. What is good news is that FCP 7 still works for the most part. The bad news is that Log and Transfer crashes.
I have a Panasonic P2 camera and I dump video via FireWire 800. When I first click on the Log and Transfer button, nothing happens. When I click on it again, the Log and Transfer window opens, but then FCP 7 crashes.
Is there any way to get video from my P2 card into the project without Log and Transfer?
Also, would any of these options work?
Trash preferences (working to figure out how to do that on Mavericks)
Worst case, re-format and re-install Lion (Don't have much time to do that)
Please let me know if you have a work around or a fix for this. I need to have this solved TODAY.
I appreciate your help in advance.I am having the same issue on my iMac that was udated to Mavericks a while back and apparently I haven't tried to log and transfer anything since.
The error comes up everytime I have a my Sandisk High Speed Card in my lexar Fire Wire 800 card reader. The Log and Transfer screen pops up and it starts adding the clips and instead of populating the screen, it crashes. Mine also says FCP quit while using the canonIHL plug in, here's a screen shot of the indication.
I agree, this needs to be resolved ASAP. I'm dead in the water. The only thing I can do is transfer the raw files into a folder somewhere, then import the clips, but then to have them as ProRes files I guess I would have to use compressor before hand. I've done it before, but it never runs as smoothly without it being natively imported. -
FCP express HD when I go to "Log and transfer", don't transfer.
Hi. I got an Imac 21.5 ,2010 with 10.9.5 maverick and 4GB of ram. I installed the FCP express HD. when I go to "Log and transfer", shows all the clips and when I click for log and transfer, simply does nothing. It's shows that it's trying but at the end, nothing it's transfer. What it could be? Thanks.
What are the properties of the source material you want to ingest?
What camera shot this footage?
FCE cannot log and transfer AVCHD material that was shot at 1080 60p as that standard did not exist when FCE was discontinued.
Is your copy of FCE updated to 4.0.1?

Log and Transfer Problem - Red Exclamation Stop Sign
I cannot log and transfer any of my files from a Panasonic HD camera P2 card. I checked the other posts about this and tried most of the solutions. The one thing I noticed is that my external hard drive (which is usb) is formatted for Windows NT but it has worked fine for several months until last week. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Shane,
I found one locally but wanted to see what you think. It is a
Western Digital My Book Studio LX 2 TB FireWire 800/USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (Aluminum)
Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-FireWire-External-Aluminum/dp/B003IT6XDI/r ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1307482250&sr=8-3
Will this work? It does spin at 7200rpms. -
Log and transfer crashes when converting to 422 from avchd from sony fs700
trying to import AVChd files shot on a Sony FS700.
the files are on average one hour or more.
Need to import as 422 HQ
log and transfer sees the files but FCP 7 crashes every time
I've tried using PavTube to convert but files over 10 minutes are segmented in chunks ranging from 10 minutes to 11 minutes when the source file is long. Also the media slips out of sync over time.
I have had success with short files in FCP 7 via log and transfer but anything long results in the crash.
is this just a limitation? IS there a fix for this?
thanks

seems like some formats that the camera shoots are not compatible. Not sure if this applies to your footage, but you might want to try clipwrap to do the conversion.
http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
It's not very expensive and there's a free trial to test the workflow.
Don't think there are any updates for fcp that will help this, but you might try doing a software update and see if there's anything that looks likely. -
Constant crashes during log and transfer
Whenever I try to use log and transfer to import a clip FCP crashes. Here's some info on my system
Mac Pro 6 Core 3.33GHz 8GB RAM
FCP 7.0.3
Mac OS 10.6.4
Source footage is AVCHD recorded to SD card from a Sony NX5U
Tried importing directly from the SD card as well as copying the entire SD card folder structure to a local drive - neither works
I have tried different cards, different cameras (same model), and different computers and all do the same thing.
Here's a crash log from the most recent crash:

Any thoughts? One of the lines in the crash report say unable to allocate memory, but there is plenty of free memory when this happens (2GB+). Also, I don't think it's bad RAM since this happens on multiple computers.I'm having the exact same problem trying to edit a church service shot with the Sony HXR-NX5U recording AVCHD on SDHC cards. I'm using Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 on a Quad Core Intel Mac Pro running OS 10.6.4.
Some of the shorter clips logged and captured successfully, but the 1 hr. clips crash each time I try. Shane Ross recommended locking the SD cards before log & capture. I failed to do this with the first attempt, but did so afterward. Then I archived the cards by making Disk Images of them. Shane says that a Mac will write code on an unlocked SD card when first inserted and that this can interfere with editing work. Could I have hosed my data by not locking the card the first time?
This is very depressing, because if I can't depend on the recorded source footage, the cam becomes a very expensive paperweight. I am extremely disappointed with FCP.

Cannot reconnect to Canon HF11 in Log and Transfer window
I am using a Canon HF11 HD camcorder with FCEHD and was able to view, log and transfer clips into FCE without a problem. I saved the project on FCE but when I came back the first time, it told me that several clips were missing and could not reconnect to the media. When I came back a second time, now it will not recognize the camera in the log and transfer window. Anyone else had a similar problem? Any suggestions would be great.
ThanksI was having the same issue with a Canon HF S100. What seem to work for me was connecting the camera AFTER I opened the Log and Transfer window. Read my complete description on this thread, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9573812#9573812.

Canon HF10 avchd file will not transfer in Log and Transfer window
Hello-
I just installed Final Cut Express 4 on my MacBook (intel core due with 4gigs ram... running snow leopard/ 10.6.1) and I cannot get any video to load in from my Canon Vixia HF10. When using the Log & Transfer window my camera is recognized and I see and can preview all the clips that are on the camera (attached via. USB). All video is shot at the highest quality FX rate. When I add a clip to the "Que" the wheel spins for about 10 seconds then it says '1 clip queued' and an orange "!" appears. If I hover over the icon it says 'failed- no data'.
I am using the apple intermediate HD codec 1060i and stereo audio. I have re-installed FCE, removed preferences files, rebooted the computer, restarted and reconnected the camera etc... and no luck.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. I have seen a smattering of others with a similar issue but no resolution that works.
Thanks for your help!I cannot get FCE to recognize my m2ts (AVCHD) files either. It seems FCE, like iMovie, will import directly from the camera but it will NOT import m2ts files already off-loaded from the camera onto a drive on your computer or network. Some have said it will work ONLY if the entire file set, including the support files the camera creates in addition to the video file itself, is present at the time you attempt the transfer. Worse, Canon's software that most people use to transfer the video files from the camera do not also transfer these support files. It may be doable if you connect the camera and transfer the entire file and folder structure as-is but that's only a guess.
If you are like me who offloaded these files long before I purchased my MAC (and did not also offoad the support files), you may be out of luck. This caveat to working with AVCHD files is a subtle distinction that Apple should clear up, especially since it is prominently highlighting this new capability. I was in the Apple store and viewed the product with a sales associate BEFORE the purchase. The sales associated looked at the Log and Transfer utility and also thought this would work-- so I bought FCE on the spot.
If anyone knows how to import previously off-loaded m2ts files directly into either iMovie or FCE, I would like to hear how it is done. Please note that I have been down the file conversion route too. Toast 10 de-synced the audio and other file converters left horrible jagged edges to moving pictures. De-interlace programs made it worse. Most conversions will introduce some corruption or undesireable artifact.
Others have said, boo hoo, AVCHD is a garbage codec that the pros will not touch and Apple shouldn't either. OK but Apple is attempting to sell its computers to the average Joe and people who like SIMPLICITY. Would be nice if Apple better supported AVCHD "for the rest of us." -
How to import Canon FS100 footage (.MOD) via Log and Transfer?
I have a Canon FS100 video camera. I records in standard definition 480p video, and saves the files in the .MOD format. Lately, I've just been using iMovie to edit my videos because it can easily import to files. Final Cut Express cannot, though, as far as I'm aware. What I've been doing is copying the files onto my computer, then using a convertor to convert the MOD files into .MOV files, but then FCE has trouble editing it. It causes it to have to render after each edit. Is there an easier way to edit my video? I've tried converting the MOD files into other formats such as DV video, but it still has the rendering problem. My FS100 doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer window of FCE. Is there a way I can make it appear? Thanks.
.mod files are a problem. Are you shooting in 4:3 or 16:9 mode?
What app are you using to convert them ... and what are you converting them to?
The .moi files are index information associated with the .mod files that contain the actual video.
MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert the .mod files. You may need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Componen, if you don't already have it on your Mac. ($20 download from the Apple Store). (You may need to change the .mod file extension to .mpg then open it in MPEG Streamclip.) If you are shooting 4:3 then in MPEG Streamclip convert the videos to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression (this is a selection on the conversion screen).
