Cannot maintain wireless connection mac mini time machine

I have an iMac and a mac mini in the same room equidistant from my Apple TimeMachine.
While I have constant wireless contact on the iMac, the mini is constantly loosing connection, experiencing extremely slow response, etc.  I have to go through diagnosis nearly everyday to have it reconnect to the internet.  This started happening several months ago.

Use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that each Mac sees:

By the way, to avoid future confusion with forum posts, please distinguish between a Time Capsule (an Apple Wi-Fi base station with an integrated disk drive) and Time Machine (backup software included with OS X since version 10.5).

  • Using Mac Mini, Time Machine and External Hard Drives as a Backup Server

    Hello...
I own a graphic design studio and have been looking for a long time to create/buy a no-thinker backup system for my macs. I have 4 workstations that I would like to backup to one central "server".
So what I was thinking was buying a Mac Mini, 3-4 external USB 2.0 Hard drives, external Blu-Ray burner and upgrade all our systems to OS 10.5. What I need to know is, will each work station with Time Machine on it back up across the network to a specific drive on the Mac Mini? If I have each workstation automatically mount one external across the network onto the desktop, will Time Machine recognize that hard drive as a legitimate drive to backup to?
Having the external Blu-Ray disc burner will give me the ability to burn data to a disc so I will have a way to take some of my information off-site. Since we are a graphic design studio, we use large amounts of disc space and regular DVD-R (4.6 gigs) is just not enough to back up some projects.
Can someone enlighten me, and tell me if this would work or not. It's the only way I can see me creating something that has enough space, will back up automatically across the network and allow me to make off-site copies of my data without spending $5,000.00.
Thanks for any comments you might have on this topic.

I'm a member of a freelance graphic artist team and have been scraping by with my MacMini and CS3. I recently obtained a used iMac (approx. 2 years old) and, instead of painstakingly transferring everything left on the Mini to the iMac, I wanted to know if it's possible to turn the MacMini into a pseudo external hard drive using the FW800 port.
I already had an external attached to the Mini and plan on using that as well, but I tend to hoarde information and run out of space really quickly. So keeping the mini around, preferably in a way that I can access it as an external through my iMac, would be perfect. I have very little experience with networking and don't have a wireless connection (yay modem cables!) so I don't quite know how to figure this out.
Has anyone done this? Would a FireWire 800 work? Would I need to set up a network between the two and use them as independently connected computers?

Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:

I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • WRT320N & IBM T42 laptop keeps dropping wireless connection at key times

I have an IBM T42 laptop whihc keeps dropping the wireless connection at what seems to be the same time windows each day.
I have my cable modem connected to my WRT320N.
My wireless it set up as follows :
    Manual configuration
Wireless Band = 2.4Ghz (Think it needs to be this for the T42 wireless).
    Network Mode = Mixed
    Channel Width = 20Mhz only
    Channel = 2
It seems to be that at approx 8pm each night when using the latop downstairs, the wireless connection will drop and then fail to reconnect for a period of time. I reboot the laptop and it will then begin to work again. The wireless connection does seem to keep trying to connect but it cannot maintain the connection to the router.
    Any ideas?

Well I've pretty much given up trying to get this router to work so have spoken to the supplier I bought it off who said it's now discontinued by Linksys - all support is through them now. Took it up with them went through all the steps I've done to try and troubleshoot it (helps to be an IBM engineer as I logically follow procedures through).
I've RMA''d the router and hope it's replacement works better. I've just unbricked my old WRT54GS to make do whilst I wait for a replacement - back down to 100mb traffic - I'll miss my gigabit switch for a while!

  • Can't connect to my Time Machine?

I migrated to Lion last week & have been unable to connect to my Time Machine, both for backing up my system & accessing earlier files. Is there a workaround on this? Do I need to reconfigure my Time Machine/Time Capsule to to accept the new operating system? The error message reads -
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/....sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
    Any help is sincerely appreciated.

  • Error "The Connection Failed" in Time Machine, Migration Assistant and Restore From DVD

I am receiving this error when trying to connect to my Time Machine Backup in my Time capsule. I input the proper password to access my Time Capsule and It returns me to the screen with the caption "The connection failed" under the Time Capsule name in the "Select your Disk" screen. What would cause this error. I am connecting via WIFI (AirPort) and have full signal. I am using Mac OSX 10.6.8
I recently had my 1TB hard drive replaced and I am attempting to restore using Time Machine, migration assistant or from the startup dvd (tried multiple ways, no success). The initial setup of mac OSX 10.6 would not let me connect or other attempts after erasing hard drive and reinstalling OSX from disk.
Worked on it all weekend and don't have enough beer to drown the frustration, any help is appreciated.

You are correct TM is not at all easy to do a full restore.
To answer your question: Yes TM disk does show up in finder.
After my initial startup setup I was able to start TM and access all my previous backups. I migrated some files and was able grab the data from finder. Not satisfied with that I tried to do a restore to that previous date, to no success. I then erased the HD and reinstalled OSx and tried again from the setup screen. That didn't work, sulked over some beers. I then tired with Migration assistant...same result (more beer).
In starting TM after trying MA, only one backup was showing in the Star screen (today). None of my previous backups were showing. Since exiting TM it has been "Making Backup Disk Available" ( xGB of 6.29GB). Considering the size, I can only assume that these are my previous backups.
I have reviewed Pondini's posts, FAQs, and tutorials. I am a little scared to try and locate the drives through Terminal as in Pondini's TS #6 guide. If I can get my previous backups to show up, I will be happy with dragging files from Finder to restore my data and slowly work at restoring my settings/applications.

had to reinstall OS last july after exel update installed virus  and cannot access itunes although backed on time machine help

You should still be able to recover your media through iTune's "open" feature:
Connect your time machine drive and navigate to it in Finder.
Open the backup.backupd (or similar) folder.
    Pick a recent date (folder)
Pick through to your home folder
drag the music folder onto itunes in the dock
Hope this helps, It might not be very clear.

  • Access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD?

    Hello.
Is it possible to access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD? Or is the external backup HDD required? This is assuming Mac OS X 10.8.5. I am not sure if the newer versions can do it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • HT1338 cannot access old back ups on time machine

I cannot access my old backups on time machine, using Gdrive as a back up

    Hi.
Are you using the time Machine app to attempt this... or are you simply opening the backup drive in the Finder? This you cannot do.
To access the data that is backed up to your external drive via Time Machine, do this...
    • First, navigate in the Finder to the folder that should contain the data you wish to retrieve.
    • Now, starting in the Menu bar at the top of the screen... click the Time Machine icon > Enter Time Machine.
The Time Machine will appear, with its display of copies of your Finder window leading back into the distant past.
    • Using the timeline along the right edge of the screen, select a date or point in time as far back as you need to go until Time Machine dislplays the file version that you wish to retrieve. At the bottom of the screen, TM will show the backup date of the current window contents.
    • Select your file in the display window and click Restore in the bottom right corner.
Time Machine will now move a copy of the backed up file back into place in your Finder window as it closes the Time Machine app.

  • I cannot restore my iphoto library from Time Machine

I have lost my iphoto library.  I am trying to restore it from a backup and it was located in the My Pictures folder.  When I try and restore it, there is a big red circle with a dash in it saying I don't have permission to open the folder it is in.  These have all of my prescious photos and I am devistated that they may be lost!  Why can't I access this folder and get my photos back - what do I need to do?

    Hello kristine515
It all depends on how you are restoring your data. If you are using the Enter Time Machine it should not give you the permissions issue.

  • Shut down Mac while Time Machine backs up

Since I don't always check if Time Machine actually backs up, I was wondering if it matters to shut down your Mac while Time Machine is doing a backup. I guess Apple would make it more obvious, if it would matter, but anyway, does anybody know for sure?

it does not matter. so long as you shut down properly (from the shut down menu and not by holding the power button) TM will stop cleanly and resume the interrupted backup when you power up the computer.

  • I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I tried to bring across my files from my last mac using time machine. After it was done copying I can't find my files anywhere but the space (about 130gb) has been used on my hard drive. Help please!!

I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I tried to bring across my files from my last mac using time machine. After it was done copying I can't find my files anywhere but the space (about 130gb) has been used on my hard drive. Does anyone know how I can get to them? I did change my user name from 'user' while it was copying, could this have something to do with it?

You don't want to do that by copying.
Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant.  If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.
If it came with Lion, it's a bit different: Using Setup Assistant on Lion

Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

Yes, but TM, Leopard and external drives are not OK with hot-swapping. Never unplug a drive without properly ejecting it first.
Each computer will have it's own backup folder on the drive and each computer will recognize its own backup folder. There is no limit other than HD space on how many computers can be backed up on an external drive.
