Cannot open some PDF files in Illustrator

Hi,
One of our users is unable to open some PDF files in her ver of illustrator.
Her version is 15.0.2 using Windows 7 64bit
She can open the PDF in reader but when she tries to opens it in Illustrator she gets error "file not found" this is the same if she right clicks open with illustrator or double clicks, and also if she tries to open from within Illustrator.
The file was created using illustrator for MAC and they can open the file OK, they also tried to save the file as an AI and she still cannot open it.
I have no ideas, any help would be very much appreciated.

kprust,
Which version are the files created in?
If above CS5, what happens if they are downsaved to CS5, then (saved as PDF and) opened by her?
And what happens if she creates a PDF herself and then tries to open it?

  • Ipad Dropbox app cannot open some pdf files

my Ipad Dropbox app cannot open some pdf files. The blue download bar appears and when download is complete, the wheel spins and spins and nothing happens.
Some files are password protected. until recently, the password window would open. Now it does not. The wheel just spins and spins and the file does not open.
AN email attachment (pdf) which I opened in Dropbox on my iPhone opens fine.  Files saved in Dropbox from my desktop won't open. This is true for pdf and MSWord files.
    I'm running iOS 7.1.2 (11D257)

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Should that fail, you might delete and reinstall the app.

  • I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section).

I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section or IRS.gov or credit card statements).  I have uninstalled Reader XI, cleaned and reinstalled.  I have no problem right-clicking and downloading and then viewing the files.  No problem viewing acrobat files.  I'm runnnig Windows 7,  IE9.     I can acces them through Chrome.

    RESOLVED
I found two suspect programs that were installed within the last 48-hrs that may have caused the problem
    1) - Libre Office - latest update.  This is a fork of Open Office.  (unlikely)
    2) - ManyCam video manipulation software  (likely)
Following info here, I opted to try to open an Adobe PDF file that was on my hard drive.  When I did, it refused and IE10 gave me an ActiveX error (AHA!!).   When I checked the installation of ManyCam, it had installed a version of DirectX that may have over-written the resident versions or disabled them somehow.
I uninstalled ManyCam but left Libre Office's update in place, then I ran a system restore from a point 24-hrs before the installations.
    This resolved the problem 100%.
So, the suggestion here is that there may be one or more program in the wild that is interupting the ActiveX or DirectX systems.  They may be running or installing an older version.  In this case it appears the handlers were broken.
Once the system restore had completed I was able to open Adobe PDF files within my IE10 browser from the Internet as well as open PDF files from my hard drive.
Note that this same issue also clearned up a problem I was having with the Comodo Dragon web browser, which is a fork of the Chrome project.  Once I eliminated the suspect program and ran the system restore all was well.  In the instance of the Comodo browser it was unable to open or reach anything - dead white screen below the menu bar.
So my suggestion would be to take an inventory of recent program installations, remove/uninstall them, run system restore from a date before the suspect programs were added, and see what happens.  In my case that fixed the problem.

  • Reader 10 can't open some .pdf files

Reader 10 on a Windows Vista system cannot open some .pdf files. Ones that I create within MS Office open fine. An IRS file (Form W-9) opens fine online, but won't open after downloading. The computer response is "Not responding". Uninstall/reinstall hasn't changed anything, nor has rebooting. Does anybody have suggestions how to tackle this problem?

    HI,
It is happening to me too! What browser are you using?  It happens to me in Firefox on my brand new MacBook Pro.  I don't have the problem on my old MacBook Air....
    Kind regards,

  • Cannot open some PDFs on Macbooks

Hi folks! I have Macbook (2008) and Macbook Pro (2010) and both cannot open some PDFs. I got an error message 'there was an error opening this document. the file is damaged and could not be repaired'. I tried to use Mac's Preview, Adobe's Acrobat (9 and 10, with latest updates) and Adobe's Photoshop CS5 - none did work. Both laptops have OSX 10.6.7 with all latest updates. The funny thing is that files work fine in old Adobe Acrobat 6 Pro on Windows XP though before opening it shows a message that the file was created in newer version of software and you should update yours but then it opens the file.
The problem is completely random and I cannot find any correlations with Acrobat's options/settings. Does anyone have any ideas?

Since you say that the file opens in Acrobat 6, why don't you do a Save As in that version to rewrite the file. Then it may work. (Basically, the file sounds corrupted.)

  • Can't open some PDF files

These are probably very basic questions but here they go. I am having some trouble opening some PDF files from my school's website. I can download them just fine but when I try to open them a window pops up saying the file could not be open because there was an error.
The tricky thing is I was able to download and open PDF files from other sources (mainly email).
Because of that I went into Adobe's website and dowloaded and installed both Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader over the copies that I already had on my computer. Is that bad? Does the computer just write the new copy over the previous one I had without a problem or does it now have duplicated files in the program's folder that could lead to future malfunctioning?
Even tough I haven't noticed any changes in performance yet could that be concern for future problems (crashing, computer slowing down)? Should I reformat the HD to factory settings and start from scratch since I do not have almost any info/ files in the computer yet? Or am I better off  leaving the computer as it is and not messing with trying to reformat.
    When a
The other question I have is can there be PDF files that open only in Windows OS and PDF files that would work on both?
    Thanks in advance

Probably you're opening pdfs using Preview. Preview is very good and it'll open almost any pdf but not 100% of them, for that you must use Acrobat Reader.
What you did was fine, just keep using the computer.

  • Why Adobe Reader XI cannot open a pdf file that can be opened with Reader 9?

Why Adobe Reader XI cannot open a pdf file within a browser that can be opened with Reader 9?

    Hi Steve,
Sorry, I cannot post a URL to the file because it is for intenal use only.
I noticed that the pdf file can be opened outside of IE browser if I disable the Adobe Reader add-on (active-X) in IE browser. If I enable the Reader add-on, the Reader cannot complete the file download. The progress bar goes in a half way, and stays there.
Just FYI, the pdf file was created by Distiller 7. Do you think it is the issue of Reader add-on? Thanks.

Please supply screen shot when it is asking for updates. (Do not send as email, use CAMERA icon). This is important, there are many fake updates.

  • I downloaded Redear to see if it could open an old .pdf file.  Now I cannot open any .pdf files.

What is wrong with Reader?  Having loaded it I now cannot open any .pdf file in my computer or on email.

I gave up loading then scouring out Adobe products each time it told me Flash Player was loaded but was nowhere to be found on my system.  I have now done what I expect is the intention in that I have downloaded the full Adobe trial pack, which they then expect me to purchase.
Cannot get over the impression that the fault is deliberate.  Building in the requirement for all users then loading a weak link, that drives you to purchase.
Shockwave is FREE... Flash Player is FREE.... Adobe Reader is FREE... Adobe AIR is FREE... Those four products are, and always have been, FREE... Flash Professional, which is for creating and editing Flash animation and video files, is a paid licensed product. Acrobat Professional, which is for creating and editing PDFs, is a paid licensed product. Neither Flash Player nor Adobe Reader have any links to prompt an upgrade to the professional version of software for the file format. Never have. Viewing Flash content and PDFs needs to be universally available to the public who receive such content over the Internet. Creating and editing Flash files and PDFs is not something that everyone needs, so it's only available at a cost for those who need it and choose to use Flash Pro or Acrobat.
There are Creative suites with several Adobe applications for everything from photo and graphic editing, to video editing, to making e-readers, to web design, but those are for developers of the individual media.

  • Unable to open some pdf files

Hi there. Sorry to bother you guys but i'm really puzzled about something. Recently I've had problems opening some pdf files (they open fine on a pc). When i try to open it, the preview window opens but i am told "For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later." I have on several occasions downloaded the latest version, but this does not seem to solve the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? BTW I am using a macbook running on leopard. Thanks!

I don't know where bubbles went, but this just happened to me for the first time EVER using Mac OS X. I just received a pdf from a co-worker that gives me the  "For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later." when trying to open it with Preview. Like I said, I've never had Preview fail to open a pdf before. Has this been seen before? Is there something new r different about how this pdf might have been created that Preview doesn't handle?
I had recently downloaded a demo of YNAB (You Need A Budget) which also installed Adobe AIR (ugh). Thinking that might have changed something, I uninstalled AIR, rebooted, but no change. This pdf is still unopenable in Preview.
BTW, I am totally uninterested in installing Reader on my system and am hoping I can deal with this singularity.
Thanks to anyone with any insight...

  • I cant open some pdf files

I just cant successfully open some PDF files(preview default) occasionally on the new Macbook Air, left with all blank contents, whereas, there is no problem in other PCs, I have no idea at all, need solutions ASAP, thanks.

I downloaded and installed the lastest Adobe Reader(X) yesterday, but it doesn't help, still got the problem.
