Cannot ping REAL server IP addresses from CSM 6500

I have a dual 6500/CSM routed topology in which the traffic from clients to the server VIP works fine. However, in preparation for some upcoming work, I find that I cannot ping the REAL server IP addresses. This would seem to be an important troubleshooting step. Any ideas why this wouldn't work?

Gilles, followup question. If I understand this, what you outlined above will allow traffic external coming into the 6500/CSM to be forwarded thru to the REAL server IPs. If it wasn't clear, I was trying to ping from the native-mode 6500 that contains the CSM. I've tried regular and extended pings using the CSM-configured server VLAN's IP and alias IP, but get no response back from any of the REAL server IP addresses.
Is what you've indicated required to ping even if I'm on the 6500 which contains the CSM?

  • Cannot ping Real IP, but can ping Virtual IP, what is the issue?

    Hi
I have load balancing for some servers on CSM, i can ping to VIP but cannot ping to Real IP of servers behind CSM. I need it for some testing and management pupose, Can anyone help to spot the issue? thanx
    Topology
    MSFC--FWSM--CSM--servers

in routed mode, by default, the CSM does not allow client to connect directly to the servers.
To allow this traffic you need to create a vserver for the subnet with a predictor forward serverfarm
    ie:
    serverfarm route
    no nat server
    predictor forward
    vserver vlanX
    vip x.x.x.0 /24 any
    serverfarm route

    Thanks in advance.

If you're being flooded with this (literally every second) in /var/log/messages I would recommend applying patch 5679560 (if you have access to metalink):

  • Cannot Ping Linux Server From Windows Terminal

    Hi Guys
Please forgive me if this is a really stupid quesion but I am very new to Linux.
I have recently installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 onto a server with the server name: oradbsvr
After following a tutorial from otn, I have successfully installed a 10g Database (10.2.0.1) and Apex 3.1 and APACHE. Whilst operating on the Linux box locally, all urls for the EM console and Apex work fine:
    e.g.
    http://oradbsvr:7777/pls/apex
When i try and access any of the EM or Apex sites from my windows box, I have to replace the hostname oradbsvr with its ip address (192.168.1.14)
This is the same at the cmd prompt from windows in that I can ping the Linux machine by ip but not hostname.
Since the Linux box will eventually be switched over to use DHCP, manually adding an IP address to the windows host file is not an option.
I guess my question is what do i need to do on the Linux box so that it can accessed via its hostname when using DHCP?
    Thanks for any suggestions
    Duncs

    Hi, Duncs!
Well, you need do nothing to the Linux box; that is not how the naming system works. You will need a way to have your Windows boxen know how to look up the server name in your naming service.
For example, you probably have a line in the "/etc/hosts" file on you Linux box that looks something like:
    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx oradbsvr
If not, then your sys admin has defined an entry in the Domain Naming Service (DNS) or the WINDOWS equivalent. Your WINDOWS boxen need to be able to resolve the name to an IP address; that's not done by your Linux server.
Is your Linux box part of a local network domain? If so, it will have a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN, in the lingo). Perhaps oradbsvr.mynet.mycompany.com; if so, your WINDOWS boxen will need to use the whole FQDN name unless they have "mynet.mycompany.com" as their default DNS search list.
Life will be much easier if your sysadmin will use DHCP to assign a fixed IP address to the server and then you configure your WINDOWS TCP/IP services to use the same DNS service as the Linux box.
So, to make a long story short (too late, alas!) is that the problem is in your client setup, not the Linux server. Your network admin can make quick work of this, if you have one.
    Cheers

  • [Solved] Cannot ping my Arch linux pc from other devices

My newly installed arch linux pc is connected to my home network via wifi. I can successfully connect to the Internet. Also, I can successfully ping other devices on my network. However, I am unable to connect to my Arch linux pc from any other device on the network. As I said, I cannot even ping it from these other devices.
Does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this?

ewaller wrote:I have a hunch that the router does not know how to find your machine.  Routers need to know to find which each IP address that is attached.  Yours might not be smart enough to remember that an address that it did not assign talked to it over the wireless.  When other computers try to talk to your address, it is clueless that you are on the wireless segment of the network, cannot find it on any wired ports, and (if it is not smart enough to figure out that it is not routable) will send it up stream or (if it is smart) will drop the packet.   Try DHCP, or, ensure that the router itself knows that the static address has been assigned to your MAC.  To do that, you will need to go into the router setup.
I switched my Arch box to Dhcp. I thought the problem had resolved, but the issue has come back even with Dhcp enabled. I have isolated the problem to the wireless router. If I refresh Dhcp on the router, I can then ping my Arch box from other devices again. Is there anything I can do to the router to resolve this? Again, the wireless router is an Asus RT-N66U.

  • Cannot ping inside IP behind sonicwall from Cisco ASA 5500

I have a sonicwall at site B and the cisco asa5500 at the main office. (site A)
The site to site VPN is working, but I can not ping the inside ip (10.1.5.2) of the sonic wall from Site A. I need this only to access the computers behind the sonicwall for remote desktop and dameware.
I have another office that also has a sonicwall (same config)  and I can ping that inside IP from Site A.
I can not see why I can ping one site and not the other.
What needs to be configured on the ASA 5500 to be able to ping inside the sonicwall at site B?
I prefer the wizard over the CLI.
    Thanks,

    Hi
AFAIK No you can not make vpn, transparent and routing in the same unit.
I would not want the DMZ and the outside interface to have overlapping ip address ranges.
logging and trying to keep track of it all would be way to confusing for me.
so what I would do is to split the external network into two network units (/25) and move all the units that can be moved to a dmz with rfc1918 addresses.
The units that can not be moved from the external network would have to stay put "for now" in another dmz with the 190 addresses /25
This would need the isp to change their routing table in the edge equipment, the lower (or upper) part of 190.X.X.X/25 would be the dmz and needs to be routed to the firewall ip address.
Then as time passes by the DMZ will be depopulated when equipment is moved out and replaced and in the end you will have the isp to merge the two 190.x.x.x/25 address ranges to one /24 and you will be back to todays setup but with all the servers in a rfc1918 network.
Do not use NAT, use PAT instead when it comes to the ip addresses translated from the internet side. it makes for a much more secure network and you do not need as much ip addresses (in a normal case)
With NAT you are translating the whole ip address but with PAT you translate the port so you can have ip X port 25 go to ip Y and port 25 and then you can have ip X port 80 go to ip Z port 80 or maybe 8080 or what ever port you want.
    good luck

  • Cannot browse to Server 2012 shares from Windows 8.x

I can't conntect or browse to any shares on a 2012 server from a Windows 8.1 client. I can connect from Windows 7 to server 2012. And from Windows 8.1 I can connect to 2008 servers. Is this a new security feature/setting on Windows 8.1 or on Server 2012?

    Hi Spetroski,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with your question. Please let me confirm something more.
Is it in a domain environment? Did you mean you type the share path in
Run, and then access share? If so, please check if use server’s IP address to access, will the same result?
If I misunderstood the connection way, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Please confirm which following scenario is similar with current state of this issue.
When use Windows 8.1, you can connect to server 2012. However, can’t browse and access all shares that host in server 2012.
Can’t even connect to server 2012, when use Windows 8.1.
If none, please feel free to let me know some details.
Meanwhile, please let me know if you can find some error message when this issue occurred. If can find, please
post the complete error messages here.
    Hope this helps.

    2. Since you mentioned this worked fine and nothing else is changed over a year, the possible cause may be like this. Looks like you have some Documentum stuff (or webapp or modules) loaded on this server. I am not much familiar with EMC Documentum stuff, except that we use that as external Content Management repository for Portal Applications. Looking at the full thread dump for thread 0, looks like documentum code is trying to publish something or interact with its documentum server and may be it is not getting the response back. So make sure if any external systems that this WLS interacts are all up and running.

  • Cannot send mail - server rejects address

Anyone know why I get this message half the time when I attempt to send an email, and usually in a day or so the mail will go ahead and send?.. I know the address is a valid email address.

igmackenzie's method is reported by many to work.
However, deleting your mail account will also delete the emails in your Outbox that you are trying to send. This is a problem when you have several in your Outbox, many of which have been carefully crafted.
So before you do so, if you don't want to lose your hard work composing your unsent emails, be sure to copy & paste each one into another application, i.e. Notes.

  • Can't Get Legit IP Address From My Cable Modem

I have narrowed down my problem.
I cannot coax a legit IP address from my Charter cable modem. I'm using AirPort Admin Utility to no avail.
Everything else in the system works perfectly...I have no problem networking between computers, or tapping into a different wireless system.
The problem is getting an IP address that works. I have tried, one at a time, an AirPort Express, AirPort Snow and, finally, an AirPort Graphite. None could get the real IP happening.
Of course, Charter claims "software problem". Maybe it is, but I certainly don't trust them!

hi! Have you Physically powered off the Cable Modem and powered it back on? Connect your Cable Modem's network cable to the WAN port of your Airport. Unplug the power to both the Cable Modem and the Airport Base Station.
Plug the Power Chord into the Cable modem first, then the Power Chord to the Airport Base Station.
    See if that helps,
    AL

  • WRT610N to TP-LINK SWITCH cannot ping printer on switch

I hope you can tell me what I have done wrong.
    dslmodem ---> wrt610N ---->TP-LINK(5port) ---- HP 2600N printer, another to IOmega HD
I cannot see either the printer nor the HD. I cannot ping them.
The cables from the TP to the printer are blue, CAT5 cables. Does blue mean twisted pair?
The HP and IOmega have static  IP addresses at 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 each.
The DHCP settings on the router allocate DHCP from 100-254 to avoid conflicts.
The firewall on the WRT610N is disabled.
Physical limitations permit only one CAT5 cable to the TPLINK box.
    If I avoid the box and do this;
    dslmodem ---> wrt610N ---->HP 2600N printer
I can ping it from both a Windows 7 and/or XP machine.
However, with the switch in place, I cannot ping it from the router nor any PC's connected to it. The PCs can ping each other.
Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thank you in advance.

The device is a TPLINK TL-SF1005D unmanaged 5 port switch. No visible settings or buttons.
The address handed out on other side of the TPLINK is 169.254.138.233
    My network is 192.168.1.*
Hmm. This does not bode well.
Should I set up a routing table entry to talk to this switch?
The wire from the router is hooked to port 1 on the switch. Should it not pick up the right submask, entry from the router?
    Thanks for all your help?
