Cannot re-add SQL database to protection group

Hello,
I have a situation where my BES database was inconsistent in DPM 2012 SP1. I removed the DB from my SQL protect group and deleted the replica data from the server. When I try to re-add it back to the protection group, I am unable to see the DB in the list
of DBs on the instance.
BES DB is mirrored (no FS Witness)
Principal is 2008 R2 SP1 Cluster
Mirror is 2008 R2 SP1 Server (No Cluster)
DPM Server is DPM 2012 SP1, version 4.1.3417.0
Protection Group is Auto-Protection enabled
I have stopped protection on the entire SQL Cluster (keeping data), recreating the Protection Group. I have also disabled and re-enabled Auto-Protection. No dice.
Any ideas?
Shawn

Hi,
What was the original casuse of the inconsistency to begin with - that may hold a clue why we cannot re-protect ?
Please make sure the mirroring role has not been switched.
Any mirrored database will be listed on the principal server only and can be selected there for protection.

  • MS Access returns a SQL Database date field as text

When linking to a table via ODBC to a SQL database, Access returns any field that is formatted as 'Date' as a 'Text' field. A Date/Time field works fine. I cannot change the SQL Database.  Is there a fix for this?

    Hi,
In regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.
Which version of Access and SQL server do you use?
Do you use ODBC Driver 11 for SQL server?
Based on my test (My environment: Access 2013, SQL server 2014, and ODBC Driver 11 for SQL server), I can't reproduce your issue. Regardless  of "Date" and "Date/Time" data type of SQL, both of them can be linked to Access
that are formatted as Date/Time type.
I suppose this issue may be caused by the data. For example, if the date like: 2015--2--23, it can't be recognized as date type in Access. Please try to check it.
If you have any update, please feel free let me know.

  • A few SQL related protection group Questions - DPM 2012 R2

Hi - Here is my environment: DPM 2012 R2 backing up SQL 2012 DBs. Some of the DBs are simple recovery model, some are full recovery model in the same protection group.
    1) Regarding the fact that DPM only looks to the recovery model when the DB is first added to the protection group, if I ever changed the recovery model in the future, would stepping through the "Modify Protection Group" wizard without changing
anything be the solution for DPM not changing its methodology on the backing up or not backing up the log files? Or would I have to remove the affected databases from the protection group and add them back in?
    2) I have disk protection configured for 30 Days, sync every 15 minutes, and application recovery points once per day. Online protection is configured for 90 Days. Does this mean my disk consumption on the DPM side for full model databases will be the full
size of the databases, plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days? OR does it mean it will keep 30 full copies of the DB? I am fairly sure the former.
    3) If I do decide to reduce the retention range on the disk side of this protection group to say 14 days, are there any specific issues with changing that after the PG has been working for some time?
    4) My former backup solution had an option to run consistency checks after every SQL job. Is that still considered best practice? Would the "Run a daily consistency check" be a better choice than the "Only run if a replica becomes inconsistent"
option that I currently have in place? Would there be any ramifications to enabling this now after this PG has been in place for some time?
    Thanks very much!

    Hi
Q1) Regarding the fact that DPM only looks to the recovery model when the DB is first added to the protection group, if I ever changed the recovery model in the future, would stepping through the "Modify Protection Group" wizard without changing
anything be the solution for DPM not changing its methodology on the backing up or not backing up the log files? Or would I have to remove the affected databases from the protection group and add them back in?
    A1)
Changing the Recovery Model of a Database
To change the recovery model of a protected database to the simple recovery model
Stop protection of the database, selecting the retain replica option.
Change the recovery model on the SQL Server database.
Add the database to a protection group.
Q2) I have disk protection configured for 30 Days, sync every 15 minutes, and application recovery points once per day. Online protection is configured for 90 Days. Does this mean my disk consumption on the DPM side for full model databases will be the full
size of the databases, plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days? OR does it mean it will keep 30 full copies of the DB? I am fairly sure the former.
A2) Your disk consumption on the DPM will be for size of model databases plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days.
Q3) If I do decide to reduce the retention range on the disk side of this protection group to say 14 days, are there any specific issues with changing that after the PG has been working for some time?
A4) Not really, but to gain back the potential extra space allocated for the original 30 day retention - you can try shrinking the recovery point volume once the retention range is reduced and the older recovery points are pruned.  I would wait until
after midnight to be sure the old RP's are deleted, then try to shrink.
Q4) My former backup solution had an option to run consistency checks after every SQL job. Is that still considered best practice? Would the "Run a daily consistency check" be a better choice than the "Only run if a replica becomes inconsistent"
option that I currently have in place? Would there be any ramifications to enabling this now after this PG has been in place for some time?
A4)  A consistency check will only run if DPM detects the replica is inconsistent.  Even if you have the option selected to run nightly, if the replica is already consistent a consistency check will be skipped.

  • DPM 2012 Cannot modify or create protection groups after upgrading from DPM 2010

    Hi,
We have recently upgraded from DPM 2010 to 2012.  Since the upgrade we have been unable to create new protection groups or add new datasources to an existing group.  Existing backups are running without errors.
We have tried checking the DPM sql user account permissions as described in
this article but with no luck.  More searching has not provided any other relavent fixes.  We are now stuck on how to troubleshoot this any further.
In the DPM console we get the following error adding a VM to an existing protection group:
Modify protection group: Virtual Machines failed:
Error 207: An unexpected error occurred on DPM server machine during a VSS operation.
Error details: VssError:Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,
The error 0x8004230C VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED: Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported, can only come when trying to enable shadow copies on new volumes created when trying to add new datasources to protection.   Generally speaking
Only NTFS volumes greater that 1GB with a minimum of 300MB free space can be shadow copied, so something is going wrong with the volume creation / format process.  Please investigate that, see if two new volumes get created when protecting a new data
source, and the sizes are greated that 1GB and also verify it's formatted NTFS.

  • Moving SQL servers from one Protection group to another

We are using DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 4. We have started to move some SQL servers from a Protection group with 90 days of retention to a Protection group with 15 days of retention.  The recovery data is co-located on the backup device and we are using
disk based backup.  A couple days after moving a couple of the servers, I have noticed that the number of recovery points has stayed the same and not decreased.  It would seem that when moving to a different protection group, that the SQL server
would inherit the new retention settings instead of retaining the ones from the old protection group.  When I moved them, I stop protection of the databases and then added them to the new group.  Why is this occurring and how do I get the new retention
settings in the new protection group to take affect?

Thanks for the information.  DPM is really a pain when trying to move co-located data sources to different protection groups.  I do hope in future versions that this is simplified and corrected.  I am now stuck for 90 days with data that I
don't want and I can't get rid of without getting rid of every recovery point for that group.  That is bad news when my LDM DB is almost full.
An important note for those who are trying to see how many extents certain data sources have when following this article
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2010/03/30/what-volume-to-migrate-first.aspx
If your DPM DB has changed from "DPMDB" to DPMDB with bunch of random characters, you will need to this line in the script for it to work.
    $db = $srvr.Databases["DPMDB"]
<-- change this to your server’s DPMDB name
Also, you will need to greatly increase the width of your command window to see the "NumberOfExtents" column which is the most important column.

  • Cannot Connect to Azure SQL Database in Visual Studio 2013

    Beyond Frustrated here.
I am trying to connect to an Azure SQL database - it has been created, has tables etc. I am trying to create a new Data Connection from within Visual Studio 2013, latest release for VS and Azure. I continue to receive the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)
I have ensured that TCP is allowed and above Named Pipes in the Configuration Manager. The associated IP address is allowed on Azure Firewall. Certificate has been added to VS etc. But still no connection. I can see the database in the Azure section in Server
Explorer, but cannot add a Data Connection. What is equally as frustrating is I have a MacBook Pro running Win 7 sitting right next to my office computer and it can access Azure fine, not problems.
If anyone has any other ideas on how I might be able to solve this I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance.
    Jeff

    Hi,
The Error message "   A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is
configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53) "
The issue comes up mainly because the application is not able to connect to the server.
To resolve this issue, try the following steps (in that order):
Make sure that TCP IP is enabled as a client protocol on the application server. For more information on how to do this, see
Configure client protocols. On application servers where you do not have SQL Server tools installed, you can check this by running cliconfg.exe (SQL Server Client Network Utility).
     2.  Check the application’s connection string to make sure that it is correctly configured. For example, make sure that the connection string specifies the correct port (1433) and the fully qualified server name.
Note You can follow these steps to obtain the connection string from the Azure Management Portal:
                          Log on to the
    Azure Management Portal.
In the left navigation pane, click
    SQL Databases.
Select your Azure SQL Database server.
                          Click
    Dashboard.
On the right side, go to the
quick glance section, and then click Show connection strings.
Test the connectivity between the application server and the Azure SQL database by using a UDL file, ping, and telnet. For more information about how to do this, see
Azure SQL Database connectivity troubleshooting guide and
    Troubleshooting SQL Server connectivity issues.
Note As a troubleshooting step, you can also try to test the connectivity on a different client computer.
Try increasing the connection timeout. Microsoft recommends using a connection timeout of at least 30 seconds.
As a best practice ensure retry logic is in place. For more information about the retry logic, see
Azure SQL Database best practices to prevent request denials or connection termination.
If these  steps do not resolve your problem, follow the below steps to collect more data and contact support:
If your application is a cloud service, enable the logging. This step returns a UTC time stamp of the failure. Additionally, SQL Azure returns the tracing ID.
Microsoft Customer Support Services can use this information.
For more information about how to enable the logging, see
how to enable diagnostic logging for Azure Web sites and Developing SQL Database Applications section in
    Azure SQL Database Development Considerations.

the list of best practices for Connecting to Windows Azure SQL Database.

  • Can't Add 2 of 3 host clusters' C/SystemState drive etc to a Protection Group

I originally had my Cluster host servers added to one protection group and backing up at the same time, but this was causing some lag on the VMs due to the fact that all the hosts were being backed up as the same time.  So I removed them from the existing
protection group and started to create three individual groups with different start times.  Now on 2 of my Hyper-V Cluster servers when trying to enumerate, so I can backup the server itself not VMs, the MMC crashes when creating a new protection group
or trying to add to an existing group.  This happens on two of three of my Hyper-V cluster Servers, the VMs are getting backed up successfully and all the rest of the servers enumerate or expand like normal.  Here is the event ID that is recorded.

I solved my problem and it was actually not difficult, just not very logical.
When you encountered the crash as mentioned above, try the following:
In the Select Group Members dialog:
Select the node that has the problem, but do not press the “+” sign to the left of it and don’t double click it.
Press the Refresh bottom, and wait for it to update the data source.
That solved the problem for me.
It’s still a bug, that it can crash the MMC!

    Hi Guys
I need help in saving bitlocker protected removable drives on the sql database instead of active directory .
I have tried to play around with the policy and I am not winning , currently my GPO : Choose how bitlocker-protected removable drives can be recovered has only the allow data recovery agent chosen and I have left out all the AD DS option unticked
Please point me in the right direction on how to achieve this , I want all my keys in a SQL database so the users can recover the keys themselves using the mbam helpdesk website

Under client management, define your endpoint URLs. You can see the help and the description section for that particular policy. Copy and paste the URL removing the port number and replace the name of the Server with that of your MBAM Web server.
Also, Disable or don't configure the policy "Choose how bitlocker protected removable Drives can
    be recovered".
This will save your recovery keys to the MBAM DBs.

We found out that there were duplicate entries in the PkgStatus_G and the PkgServers_G tables in the SCCM DB.  We identified them, deleted them , and then we were able to run the /TESTDBUPGRADE command and it went through fine.  We performed

  • DPM2012 R2 - cannot free tapes for deleted protection group

I've deleted one of the protection group with option to delete protected data.
But tapes are still not set as free - and I cannot do it manually - I have constant message that tape is a part of protection group.
I cannot set them also as free by using a script (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399673.aspx) - the same message is shown :
Set-Tape : The selected tapes cannot be marked as free because they belong to p
    rotection groups.
You need to stop protection of the associated protection groups before you can
mark the tapes as free. The protection group that a tape belongs to is listed i
n the Protection Group column. (ID: 31116)

  • Brazil Preview - Create Sql Database Server - Argument 'adminPassword' cannot be empty

While trying to create a new Sql Database Server in Brazil (Preview) using Azure Portal the following error occurs: "Argument 'adminPassword' cannot be empty".
Anyone is having the same error? I have fulfilled al the form inputs: LOGIN NAME, PASSWORD, CONFIRM PASSWORD AND REGION.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I can't believe this issue was because of using firefox. I tried with chrome (unintentionally) and it works.
