I bought an iPhone 5c today, and in the store backed up my old phone to icloud. When I went to restore my backup, it would not allow me to because the new phone has a higher operating system. Help!

You can restore an older iOS backup to a newer iOS version. Perhaps you meant the opposite, that the 5C you just got is running an older version than the phone you backed up. Set it up as new, not from a backup, then go to Settings > General > Software Update, and update to iOS 7.1.1. After the update, and the phone reboots, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Confirm, and then you can walk through the setup screens again, and this time restore from a backup.

My iPhone 4s recently stopped working (not the phone itself, just he screen) so I cannot get into it to set up an icloud backup or whatever. I luckily made a backup only a day before it broke, so now I want to put that backup onto my new iPhone 4s. Unfortunately, when I click "restore backup.." it says that my iPhone has never been backed up onto my computer, and thus it finds no backups that I can restore it to. I am aware I never backed it up, but I am unsure of how to access my backup from my old iPhone when I plug in my new iPhone into itunes. Any ideas??

Now that I am getting a 4th Generation Touch to replace my three year and a half year old 3rd Generation Touch, I previously backed up my 3rd gen iPod which ran iOS 5.1.1. Am I able to sucessfully put this backup onto the 4th generation? And if so, will it make the 4th gen run iOS 5.1.1 or will it run iOS 6.1.6, the current iOS for that device.

When you restore an iOS device either to factry settings or from any backup, the retored iPod will have the latest iOS version for that model iPod. When you restore youyr 4G for the backup of the 3g the retored 4G will hae iOS 6.1.6

But, I only want the Contacts, Notes & Apps from my 6 Plus Backup to be restored onto my iPhone 5 because my iPhone 5 16GB has too little storage and so the whole 6 Plus backup won't fit. How can I do this?

Are you aware that 4.2.1 is the last iOS version compatible with a 3G? You never could install iOS 6 on it.

Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

HELP - Restoring from a Time Machine backup onto an OS 10.3 PowerBook

I've been having a lot of problems with my computer running the latest version of OS 10.5 so I did a Time Machine back-up then reinstalled the software install/restore disc that came with my PowerBook 1.25 ghz (OS 10.3).
I forgot that 10.3 didn't include Time Machine and I can't find my OS 10.5 disc, so I can't restore my computer using the backup.
Is there anyway to restore my computer by directly accessing the Time Machine files without first installing OS 10.5? I really don't want to have to buy that OS again especially since 10.6 is right around the corner.

Sorry, without a Leopard Install disc, you're out of business.
If you've still got your receipt, Apple may replace the disc for a nominal fee. I don't think an Apple store will do this, but if you're near one, it's worth a call. Otherwise, try AppeCare.

Cannot Restore Client from WSE 2012R2 Backup

I have just setup a home server using WSE 2012R2. Everthing seems to be working well. Clients backing up OK. One machine has just about maxed out its 256GB SSD (backups have just stopped because of insufficient space) so I thought I'd replace it with a 512GB
SSD from another machine. So following directions I created a USB boot stick. No problem. However I simply cannot get the client to boot from the stick despite many tries, resetting the bios to boot from USB CDROM (which instructions seem to favor), USB HDD
etc., The USB works I know that.
So I thought I'd try another approach. I installed Win7 Pro on the new HD and connected the machine to the Server, then setup the restore environment and did a restore from the dashboard of the client machine. No Go! Files are copied to a "Restore"
Folder, and the machine fails to copy 30 files because the file name string would be too long. Then it quits, leaving me with 239 GB of files in a folder instead of a restore. This is not helping...
So much for doing backups! Any ideas out there?

I am restoring a Lenovo X201 laptop with Win 7 Pro installed on Drive C (boot), trying to migrate from 256 GB to 512 GB. The WSE 2012R2 equipped Server has been doing backups of the C drive for the last week or so as well as another half-dozen machines.
Searching technet, I found a guide (http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj713516.aspx). Also, just following the Dashboard instructions(Devices> Client Computer Backup Tasks) indicates that a USB stick with the recovery key would allow access to
the server's backups for the machine. The problem seemed to be that the machine would not boot from the stick. I tried re-installing several times, different bios settings etc., and never could get the stick to boot.
The other recovery method, again as indicated in the Technet article above or the "Client Computer Backup Task" (3rd tab), is to use the "Client Restore Service". The instructions are a
bit vague..(How can you restore to a machine you can't boot?). Also when I eventually tried (after I booted the machine with a Win7 Pro disk) all it did was copy the entire drives worth of files into a single "Restore" folder. Not very helpful.
I also had image backups of the drive that I had made using Acronis 2014 onto an external drive. So I made a recovery CD there and booted the machine figuring I'd restore the image. However after loading properly, the program would freeze preventing any
recovery actions. I had a go-round with then, downloaded the latest recovery media etc., no dice.
So I finally solved the problem of upgrading to the 512 GB drive by downloading EaseUS's free workstation backup software and imaging one drive to the other using their recovery media. I never heard of EaseUS before. They are located in the Chinese city
of Chendu. The recovery media booted up the first time, I imaged the drive over in a few hours and was done.
I think i'm going to buy the software for all my workstations and the Server too. AS A FOOTNOTE. After all was back to normal, I checked the Client Computer backups on the server. It said no backups were being done because the backup database was corrupted
(did not say that when I started all this) So I checked and repaired the database overnight and it is working again.
However, this machine and the 15 TB of drives is brand new, and has been working for about 2 weeks. I have lost confidence in the Servers usefulness and reliability for doing backups that are worthwhile. I'm very happy I did this before I was in crisis mode
trying to recover valuable data.

4s: Cannot Restore iOS 6.01 through iTunes - no error code

Please accept my apologies if this has been covered elsewhere - I've spent hours now going through dozens of sites and cannot get anywhere.
I'm having issues with battery life on a 4S (as well as FB not working, but that's minor) after updating to iOS6
My iPad3 on the other hand is experiencing incredible battery life on it even watching HD films
So, I'm trying to restore it to Factory settings via iTunes on an iMac - a good starting place.
Each time I try restore to factory settings I receive the message below (with no error code)
"The iPhone "X iPhone 4s" cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.
Please try again later"
I've tried it probably 20 times, tried using different cables, USB ports, checked all of the advice below (reset, upgrade software etc) but nothing.
Any advice? I'm slightly nervous after reading other accounts that it can freeze up if something goes wrong.

Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

Dont use GUI to restore database.This issue can come sometimes when your login is not administrator in SQL Server, instead use below query

You cannot "restore" iOS 7.0.4 as a new device through iTunes as the newest iOS version that your iPhone qualifies for (currently iOS 8.1.2) will be downloaded and installed.
You can do virtually the same thing from your device itself without having a forced iOS update if you do the following on the device:
Go to Settings/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings
If you wish to make a backup before performing this operation, go ahead and do so.
This will wipe out all user data/apps/media/music/etc and will return the device to a clean state without updating the iOS...your device will remain at the iOS version that it is currently on. If you want to restore from a backup later (however, it sounds like you do not want to), you can do so after the "Erase All Content and Settings" is completed and the iPad is being set up as a new device. Otherwise, just proceed with setting up the device from scratch.

Oops, I admit it - I messed up but need help please?? I received a replacement iphone today. My broken iphone OS and my itunes had the latest software updates and I did a full backup before going to the store to get the rerplacement. However, when I got home with the replacement iphone and plugged it in, it asked if I wanted to update the OS on it. I made the mistake of saying yes. It then made a backup of the empty factory settings from the new replacement and restored from that rahter than the backup I made before going to the store. Yes I know I should have said no and just did the restore which would have resotred my previous backup that I made before going to the store. Then after everything would be allright I could have told it to update the OS.
You can slap my in the face or I will do it myslef for making such a stupid mistake. All ready did the "I should have had a V" thing to my forehead.
After seeing the restore was fromthe factory settings rather than my earlier good backup, I went into my documents and drilled down to the mobile sync backup and saw that one of the three folders (with giberish as a title) has a lot of information with the date and time I did the backup before going to the store.
Could I possibly delete the later (factory setting backup) folder and then do a restore to get my good backup onto the iphone? I didn't do that yet in fear that it might mess something else up on the iphone and I wanted to check with you experts here first for guidance and assistance, PLEASE?

They take quite a while (about 50 minutes each actually). Your help got me half way there and is very apprecaited! I did manage (with your excellent help) to get most of my backup put onto the replaced iphone. the photos, music, and videos didn't get put over. I think I can move those back over by making sure they are selected in the seperate tabbed screens for the iphone. Well I did the resotre from 3 times and that page still comes up when I plug in the iphone. Yes, I did close itunes, reboot the PC, and powered off the iphone and then brouhgt it back up before connecting (all several times), but itunes still takes me to the same "setup iphone screen".
Can you help me to get it to the standard iphone screen and there I will make sure the selected items are checked and do a sync.

The "Backup" do not store your Applications, Music, Video's. It saves your settings, your application preferences, etc.
