Cannot run X apps in a docker container

Hi, I have a Dockerfile which enables me to run X apps.
It works perfectly in Ubuntu, but not in Archlinux:
FROM mascip/archlinux:2014.12.09
# To avoid a bug with the filesystem: https://registry.hub.docker.com/u/base/arch/
RUN sed 's/^CheckSpace/#CheckSpace/g' -i /etc/pacman.conf
# BROWSERS
RUN pacman --noconfirm -S nvidia-libgl && pacman --noconfirm -S leafpad
# NON-ROOT USER
# Replace you uid, gid, and username
RUN pacman --noconfirm -S sudo
RUN export uid=1000 gid=1000 && the_user="abla" && \
the_home="/home/${the_user}" && \
the_capital_user=$(echo $the_user | sed 's/./\U&/') && \
mkdir -p $the_home && \
echo "${the_user}:x:${uid}:${gid}:${the_capital_user},,,:/${the_home}:/bin/bash" >> /etc/passwd && \
echo "${the_user}:x:${uid}:" >> /etc/group && \
echo "${the_user} ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL" > /etc/sudoers.d/${the_user} && \
chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers.d/${the_user} && \
chown ${the_user}:${the_user} -R ${the_home}
# Replace username and home
ENV USER abla
ENV HOME /home/abla
WORKDIR /home/abla
USER abla
CMD /usr/bin/leafpad
In order to run it, I do:
$ docker build -t a1 .
$ docker run -ti \
-e DISPLAY -e XAUTHORITY=/tmp/.Xauthority -v /home/user/.Xauthority:/tmp/.Xauthority -v /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix \
a1 leafpad
which works in Ubuntu (a Leafpad window opens), but not in Arch where I get:
leafpad: Cannot open display:
PS: I have a similar Docker container which runs leafpad in a Ubuntu container; the problem is exactly the same for that container too.
PPS: the Dockerfile stems from here: http://fabiorehm.com/blog/2014/09/11/ru … th-docker/
Edit: I need to make it work soon. I would appreciate any idea to investigate further. I find X11 magic very confusing.

I have tried checking that the Xserver was running with
$ ps aux | grep X
and it wasn't (is that even possible, as things were displaying on my screen?)
So I installed the whole xorg group:
$ sudo pacman -Sy xorg
After that, startx wouldn't start anymore, and I had to upgrade everything:
$ sudo pacman -Syu
which fixed the problem.
Now the X server is running:
$ ps aux | grep X
grep: warning: GREP_OPTIONS is deprecated; please use an alias or script
root 335 0.8 1.0 289376 42688 tty1 Ssl+ 06:46 0:01 /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg :0 -seat seat0 -auth /run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt1 -novtswitch
user 459 0.0 0.2 304648 9980 ? Ssl 06:46 0:00 /usr/bin/lxsession -s LXDE -e LXDE
user 531 0.4 0.6 497908 24460 ? Sl 06:47 0:00 lxpanel --profile LXDE
user 532 0.2 0.8 607376 34960 ? Sl 06:47 0:00 pcmanfm --desktop --profile LXDE
user 944 0.0 0.0 10712 2256 pts/1 S+ 06:49 0:00 grep --color=auto X
but Leafpad still won't be displayed and throws the same error.
Any more ideas?

  • Problem with Adobe AIR 2.7, cannot run any apps anymore

    http://english.sandrostudio.com/a-strange-problem-with-adobe-air.html
    Above is the error I get: This application requires a version of Adobe AIr which cannot be found. Please download the latest version of the runtime from http://www.adobe.com/go/getair or contact the application author for an updated version"
    I could run Adobe AIR previously without any problem. i checked for a solution online, in this forum, It seems it's a problem not so uncommon. I receive the same error when trying to uninstall Adobe AIR (?!). So I am basically stuck. Any help here? Any advice? Is there an upcoming new version of the installer?
    I need Adobe air for many important applications I use.
    Thanks!

    Oh, sorry, I find many of those files but the latest is this one:

  • Different screens in docking container...?

    Hi gurus,
    I'll try to explain what I'd like to do....
    I have a dynpro with a docking container, on the left I have a tree where I can choose an activity (e.g.: go to se11, go to se38, go to se16, and so on).
    I would like to run those transaction inside the docking container, without leaving to another screen, is it possible?
    Thank you very much!!!

    Hi,
    I think it is not possible, although your idea is interesting. You must think that we must use Call Transaction XXXX and that means that we´re leaving our current programme in order to execute the called programmed and screen behind transaction XXXX. We cannot use Submit since the instruction is for executable reports only.
    When using the SAP´s main menu, we have to leave the main programme (SAPLSMTR_NAVIGATION, screen 0100) when double clicking a node in the tree. When using a docking container, you must insert either screens or subscreens for displaying your information. You cannot enbed a transaction into this screens since it happens what I´ve explained in my first paragraph.
    If you find a way, let us know.

  • How do I install itunes on a windows 8 computer. I keep getting the message that the app cannot run on my computer.

  • App cannot run on Windows Server 2012 R2

    I have an application that runs well on Windows Server 2012. The application has two editions 32-bit and 64-bit, both are from the same code base.
    However, on Windows Server 2102 R2, the x64 version of the application works, but the 32-bit version does not run. Invoking the 32-bit of the application generates the "This app cannot run on you PC" message.
    I tried the compatibility troubleshooting, and it does not help.
    Any suggestion on what could be the problem?
    Thanks.

  • Cannot run more than one instance of a remote app in remote desktop services Server 2012

    All,
    I installed "Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Quick Start Deployment for RemoteApp, Windows Server 2012 Style" using the instructions here http://blogs.technet.com/b/yungchou/archive/2013/02/07/remote-desktop-services-rds-quick-start-deployment-for-remoteapp-windows-server-2012-style.aspx
    I need to set up an image viewing program (Olyvia) to allow students using Macs and iPads access to this windows only application in order for them to get their work done.  We may have 12 or more students accessing and trying to run the Olyvia application
    at any one time.
    All works good, except that I cannot run the Olyvia application (setup as a remoteapp program) more than one instance at a time.  That is, when I start up "olyvia" on a Mac, it works great.  If I leave it up and running, and then try
    and start up "olyvia" on an iPad (using different accounts), I get the following error message:
    "Cannot run more than one instance of this program simultaneously.  Either the program is already running, or it has not been terminated completely."
    I need to understand the root issue.
    1.  Is this a licensing issue?  So, I need to add some CALs to the RDS server?
    2.  Is this a application issue with "olyvia"?  So, no matter what I do, it is not going to be able to be used by more than one person at a time when configured as a remoteapp?
    3.  Did I not "publish" the application correctly?
    4.  Is this happening because I followed the "quick start" guide?
    Appreciate any help I can get on this.  We have no problem getting CALs, I just need some help with the root issue.
    Thanks,
    Geoff Weatherford

    Hi Geoff,
    Each application uses different techniques for determining if multiple instances are running.  If you can determine what method it is using then perhaps you could use App-V or other virtualization software.
    In the best case you really should direct your question to the maker of Olyvia.  The reason I said that is they specifically designed their software to prevent multiple instances, so the first question is, why?  Is it related to Licensing?
    Compatibility?  If you knew the specific reason(s) why they are doing it and the technique used then at the point using a virtualization technique may be the best option.

  • PhotoShop Elements from the App Store cannot run actions??

    I am so upset that I spent $80 to download PhotoShop Elements 9 from the App Store and then found out that it cannot run actions and presets!!!! For some reason, the version of PSE that you get from the app store is not capable of this, which is the main reason I NEED and USE PhotoShop! Please tell me I am wrong and if so, how to fix it!!! I have them installed in the files correctly but they don't show up in PS. Thank you for any help you can provide, thanks!

    I just loaded my actions using the PSE 10 from the App Store.
    Close PSE.
    Access the System library location from Finder, Click menue, "Go" then select "Go to Folder...". Type in  "~/Library" and click Go.
    The systems Library will open up and then you take this path:
    Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor > Presets > Actions (The Actions folder is where you move your actions file to)
    Then go to the Photo Creations Folder > Locales > en_US and delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file (move it to the trash)
    The next time you launch PSE your Actions DB will be rebuilt with the new actions installed.

  • Cannot run application in JSC - Cannot start app server

    I have 4 separate JSF applications developed in JSC.
    On occasion, I have a problem starting the application server and get a popup saying to check for misassigned port names and contents of domain.xml.
    Whenever this happens, a system reboot seems to clear up the problem until now.
    Now, rebooting does not help.
    I have tried all 4 projects after rebooting and none of them will start.
    I do not know anything about the workings of the server, so I have not changed any of the server files since the time that it was working.
    I have attached the server log below.
    Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem is and how to resolve it?
    Thanks

The PATH must be consistently formated (e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\bin; ) or the Appserver may not be able to start and/or stop.  Mixed quoted spaces in your PATH can cause problems, so the launcher will remove all double quotes before invoking the process. The most reliable solution would be to remove all spaces from your path before starting the Appservers components.  |#]

    I'm having the same problem again.
    I tried using pe-start.bat -reset and it worked once, but not any more.
    Here is the result from running pe-start.bat -reset.
    If anyone has any clue as to why I cannot get the app server to start in JSC and how I can fix it, PLEASE let me know.
    I really don't want to do a reinstall.

    Thanks too all the people who responded. . . . (noone)
    Got it sorted though. Seems that Apple has issues with multiple apple id's.
    Seems i had to somehow remember and use the original id i had when i first bought my 1st iPhone. . . .
    Even after that it was extremely hard to get my apps back on my PC.
    If anyone else has the same problem. . . .email Apple. Cya.

    We can't really know. Your info is at best vague. Presumably something is blocking the activation system, so refer to this:

  • Docking container in splitter container?

    Hi forum,
    i would like to generate a view (dynpro) with is seperated in 3 vertical (resizable) areas. I have solved this with the splitter container.
    Now i would like to fill the 3 areas with dynamic content, i. e. different table views. These different contents should be nested in containers, so i can push my predefined containers into the splitter areas. (just the contents the user would like to see...)
    In my opinion, the docking container is the right choise, because i have not to carry about positioning the container at all.
    Now theres a problem in adapting the docking container to the splitter container and i am not sure if it is possible at all?!?
    I try to create the docking object with the splitter object as parent, but the debugger calls a run time error?!?
    CREATE OBJECT docking_container

    Each time that I boot up, the app store appears in the dock even though I remove it each time by dragging and letting go and the "spoof". What do I do if I don't wanna see it in the dock each time?

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
