Cannot "systemctl enable root-suspend"

I have recently installed arch and want to run custom scripts on when using systemctl suspend.
I have been following the wiki but when i try "systemctl enable root-suspend" for root/system actions or "systemctl enable suspend@marno && systemctl enable resume@marno" i get an error:
Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory
what am I missing?

From that list I can see there is no root-suspend.

Hahah, I want to assume your being funny (expressing disbelif about someone actually reading the wiki) and not implying that I lied. if I missed something, or misinterperted please do tell me!
Actually I think i see my mistake I have been trying "systemctl enable root-suspend" before making "/etc/systemd/system/root-resume.service"

But I agree, I do not remember any situation where in a Terminal session "su root" was necessary. In all cases using sudo was sufficient.

Systemctl enable suspend@user fails

I'm trying to add a hook that runs on suspend-to-ram, and am following these instructions:

To enable it for user "lefty," I try to run
# systemctl enable suspend@lefty
but I get this error:
Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory
The same thing happens if I try
# systemctl enable suspend@user
I feel like I'm probably missing something. Any idea what it is?

Use your preferred editor (nano)
copy and paste the script to
/etc/systemd/system/[email protected]
Heads up...you might want to enable the resume service too

Changing short name - cannot enable root user??

Hi I encountered a problem trying to enable the root user in order to follow the steps to change my short name. As I follow the steps into opening Directory Utility and entering my administrator account name and password. Here's where I'm stuck at, there is no "Edit" button asking me to enable the root user. Anyone have any idea what I should do now?

In Directory Utility.app (in utilities) unlock the lock, lower left by clicking on it. Then in the menu, top left on your screen, under Edit, click Enable Root user and proceed.
You can also enable the root in a terminal by entering
sudo passwd root
and first entering your regular admin password and then selecting a root password, which should not be the same as your admin password for obvious reasons.
After that you are on your own, but I suggest first backing the OS up since there might be unexpected consequences from changing the short name. Even if you have nothing saved, you might find that the OS gets hosed for some reason and you have to do a complete reinstall. Using a TM or clone backup makes this a trivial thing to do. Otherwise, it's starting from scratch and updating everything all over again.

Cannot enable root user

When I set up my user account last year when I got this computer, I am pretty sure I remember a shortname being filled in or suggested to me, and it had an uppercase character for its first letter. So, my short name is "Name" -- except, you know, instead of "Name" it's my first name.
Anyway, I haven't had any issues until I installed 1Password. I'm having some trouble keeping it in sync, and ran a troubleshooting app as part of their guidance and I see that they say an issue is that my shortname contains an uppercase letter, when in fact it should be all lowercase.
I find mixed reviews online of whether all lowercase in the short name is still a thing—I've found a few places that say uppercase letters were allowed in 10.6.8, but others say that it should be all lowercase and I need to change my shortname.
I'd really rather not change it, but just to see how I would do it if I ended up having to, I checked out these instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428. I got hung up on enabling the root user, though, because I'm not able to select "Enable root user" from the edit menu. It's always grayed out.
I then found this Apple doc on enabling the root user in Mountain Lion: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11331?viewlocale=en_US but it's nothing different. "Enable root user" is still always grayed out in the edit menu.
So... Is there no way I can enable the root user? I'm running 10.8.

FWIW, enabling the root user account to change a user's shortname is taking a sledgehammer to put a tack in a wall to hang a picture. Better is to follow this:

I've not enabled the root user account since installing OS X in 2002 and I use the Terminal and the CLI routinely.

Home folder name change, cannot see enable the root user option

Hi I am using Mac OS X (10.6.8)..got it from others.. I would like to change the home (small home symbol in finder) folder name. Went through many discussion in apple support. My problem is, I am unable to enable the root user. I went through the following steps: Apple menu -System Preferences- Accounts- authenticated as an administrator account- Login Options- Join- Open Directory Utility- Directory Utility window- administrator account name and password, then clicked OK. After this I can not see option with name Enable root user ( I can see only Active directory, BSD flat file and NIS, LDAPv3, Local). If I click active directory then the edit section will be activated. If I click edit, its showing active directory domain). I can not understand this.

Here are the instructions from Apple on changing user short name or home directory name. I've used this on a couple of used MacBooks I've bought on eBay. And remember to go into System Preferences>Sharing and change the Computer Name in there.

How do I enable root user in OS X 10.7 Lion?

How do I enable root user within Lion? I've looked online, and I've been instructed to launch the 'Director Utility', but I cannot find this ANYWHERE in Lion. It's not in my Utilities folder. Can anyone offer any advice as to how to enable the root login? Thanks.

I get to step 5 and don't see the option to enable the root account.

You can do almost everything "root" can do with "sudo" and an administrative account. Keeping an open and "always god-mode" account around is hazardous.

I'm on a fully updated Arch_x86-64/KDE initially installed without systemd.
I've have several problems which I suspect to be related to a partial transfer to systemd.
1. During the last full system update, I've got the following error:

Do not remove it, if you did install it again. The reason behind it is it provides more files than only the init symlink. Never remove packages from the base group if you are not absolutely sure what you are doing. You can see the package is part of the base group with "pacman -Qi" and you can see what it provides with "pacman -Ql package" .
Also check "pacman -Qg base" , so you will not ask if you can remove one of those packages in the future...

'Cannot open mirrored root device' -- after dd and h/w swap

Hi All,
i needed to clone the server (netra440, sol10)so i took a sector copy (dd) of two mirrored hard disks
and tried to start from them on another netra440 server , i've got an error listed below,
is there any way to bring this mirror to life if given that original server is unavailable anymore?

System can be brought up in this way; however do you have any idea if the root disk has been encapsulated by VxVM before this panic during the reboot?
I`ve encapsulated the root & its mirror under veritas volume manager and rebooted the machine and landed upon

I am getting this coming up in the error log when I attempt to import an unmanaged solution.
After searching on google Type 29 refers to a workflow.
I go into the source system and query the database by the GUID and discover that it is actually a Business Process Flow called 'Phone to Case Process'.
I do not have this process in my target system as I deleted it.
Looks like this is one of the out of the box ones. I don't think we we have changed this one much.
What does this mean and what should I be looking for??
Anyway how do I remove this offending process from the unmanaged solution xml file and attempt to re-import it?
It doesn't look like I can generate the solution again without the offending workflow/process..

Just modify both solution and customizations xml by searching for the guid and removing the root component

Calendar syncing cannot be enabled because there are no calendars available.

I have iCloud calendars and a google calendar, but iTunes says I have no calendars. Endless loop. How do I break out of this?

I tried this but when I go back to check Sync Calenders I get this message:
"No calendars available. Calendar syncing cannot be enabled because there are no calendars available. Do you want to open Calendar and create a calendar now?"
When I open calenders it show I have two calender On My Mac.
The same applies to Sync Contacts.
I have tired Restore iPod but that did not make any difference. This problem occurs across all logins on my Mac.
I've Reistalled OS X but that did not help either.

How to enable root user in Yosemite

I see in SEARCH how to enable root user in LION but not Yosemite. Does anyone know how? The sys prefs button choices is different so can't find out how to do.

Do a backup before doing anything. To delete them you will need to enable the Root User and log in as the Root User. You need to be very careful while logged in as the Root User because you can delete any file and could potentially ruin your system. As soon as the non-functioning applications are deleted, log out and use your normal account. Did I mention doing a backup?

Very strange: can not enable root.

One of my old G4 behaves very strange, unless everything is running very well, I can't log in as root.
Also after enabling root in NetInfo manager, I can't login as root, neither as user nor using SSH.
I resetted the Pasword using the Install-DVD. But still no effect.
Finally i deleted the root account using NetInfoManager and deleted the root home dirctory /private/var/root.
So I was able to activate root in NIM again, restarted the local NetInfo-Domain and again: nothing.
It is complete impossible to log into this machine as root. But I have to.
Making a complete new install on this mac will cost me at least one day, so this is not an option.
Workin since ever with lots of macs, I never faced such a strange thing. Please help!

Should the features and access you require not work in 10.4.11, you may have to
consider installing a new system folder and update that; if the issue really is one
of some unusual happening and the superuser or root user is inaccessible.
Are you sure you really need root user access? There are other ways to do stuff.
