Canon HG10 and sequence/project file settings FCP6.x

I have previously transferred footage from my Canon HG10 into FCP6.x and had it play back fine. I just transferred in some more footage and when I layer the clips the playback freezes. Now, I'll admit I'm a novice in the HD game so let me know if my settings are all wrong:
Sequence is set to:
frame size - 1440 x 1080
aspect ration - HD (1440 x 1080) (16:9)
pixel aspect ratio - HD (1440 x 1080)
field dominance - upper (Odd)
compressor - Apple ProRes 422
quality - 100%
Under the "advanced" tab it is set to interlace at 29.97
The audio/video settings are:
sequence preset: apple prores 422 1440 x 1080 60i 48 khz
capture preset: HDV apple prores
device control preset: HDV firewire
video playback: digital cinema desktop preview - full screen
audio playback: default
Recently updated QT to 7.6.4
Running FCP 6..0.6 on a G5 2 x 3GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon tower with 8GB 800 MHzDDR2 FB-DIMM
In other words, HELP!

OK, doing some more research. When I look at the clip properties it is listed as 1920x1080 1.0 29.97i UFF, not progressive. If I go to Modify Clip the field order is listed as Field Order from File: Upper Field First and I have the option to Conform to: Progressive Scan
I'm confused because I thought i Interlaced was for broadcast TV and progressive was better for editing on a timeline for things like web video, adding effects and combining with other footage.
Should I modify the clip to be progressive you think? Another question, if I just change the Sequence Settings to be AVCHD 1080p is that enough or would I still need to modify the clip as well? It's so hard to find this info on Adobe's site or in any books.
Not sure why Canon would list the setting as progressive but it is wrapped as interlaced. After Googling I see this is the case and I'm not the only one who has noticed this, but I see no recommendations.
Thanks.

  • Has anyone heard of RoboHelp HTML v10 "magically" deleting itself and all project files?

We have an off-site contractor that swears RoboHelp HTML "magically" deleted itself and all project files. I've never heard of this and wondered if anyone else had. It sounds kinda fishy to me, but I've seen some strange things from RH, so thought I'd ask around first.
    Thanks-

    Hi all-
No, no source control in play that I know of. It appears we have gotten few answers to questions. The problems began when it was reported that they could not copy the project files to a flash drive. I personally have never had an issue with this task. Then, it was reported that the project had gotten deleted by RH. The resolution after-the-fact is that the contractor spent 1+/- week recreating the project (60-70 topics) from the published content.
I'm surprised that as a contractor they didn't know to come here and ask questions or find tools available to reverse engineer from the published content, but I suppose not everyone knows of the goldmine that lives here. I'd never heard of an uninstall removing project files, but I know there are a million ways it could have been configured and never say never, right?
Thanks for the quick replies - you guys ROCK!

  • Opening/storing Visio and MS Project Files

We are using Teeming for a small team shared across two sites. They want to store and use Vision and MS Project files.
Using standard MS Office documents seems to work fine, access via Teeming works as expected.
When opening Visio or Project files, they have to 'download' the file first, make changes and resave the document back up into Teeming. Not so smooth.
Is this a restriction of Teeming? Can we get this to work as other Office docs?
    Teeming is V2.0 on SLES.

It's because the PowerMac G5 had HUGE bandwidth with a fat BUS on each processsor so they could run hard, hot and heavy.
It's not so with the Intel processors which are multi-core and share a common bus thus bottleneck.
The newer Intel processors can do more work on the CPU, but when it comes to in/out they are s-l-o-w.
I've had a wickedly fast dual processor (not dual core) G5, RAID 0 pair of 10,000 RPM drives as boot and a fast video card, I could do a lot very very fast.
You'll likely have to upgrade to Final Cut X to get more cores utilized, prepare to cry a little bit, Apple is working on the features they stripped out of it to make amends to pro users who complained loudly. (all over TV too)

  • Canon s95 and g12 RAW file support???

Adobe has now updated Lightroom to include support for cr2 RAW files for the Canon S95 and G12.
An guesses how much longer for Apple to get its act together?

It's only a "release candidate" not a proper final release. Consider it an advanced beta. Adobe explain "release candidate" here:

An guesses how much longer for Apple to get its act together?
Aye - no doubt the entire Aperture team is sitting back, playing games on their iPads, drinking coffee and generally skiving...
I know this is not the answer you want, but the simple answer is - patience. It will be here when it's here - that's the way it is.

  • PP crashed and now project file is blank despite autosave being active.

I recently downloaded Premier Pro CC and love it so have got round to editing some footage I took over the summer.
I am a few hours into editing a project when PP crashed, I dragged the 'warp stabilizer' effect onto a short clip (4 seconds) and the windows loading cursor popped up, then it said 'not responding' on the window title bar. It stayed like that for about an hour so I closed PP by clicking the 'X' and then clicking 'close program' when the dialogue box popped up.
Now when I go to open my project file up it just opens a completely blank project. Autosave was active and it popped up many times while editing this project, most recently about 10 minutes before PP crashed.
Any idea why the autosave doesn't seem to have worked? Do I have to do anything special to access a separate autosave file or something?

Sorry for being a complete dunce, I have just done a quick google and found out how to access the autosave files and I have now got the project back minus the last 10 minutes of work.

  • Different setting for Canon 7D and 7D2 RAW files?

Help!  I'm trying to decide whether to return my new Canon 7D2.  I shoot RAW and import my images into Lightroom 5.7.  I've done lots of identical test shots with my old 7D and my new 7D2.  The 7D2 shots usually look softer and cooler and generally of lesser image quality.  I can make up much of the difference using sharpening and tonal work in the Develop module, but this is a hassle.  Can anyone explain why this is happening?  Does Lightroom apply different settings when it imports RAW files from the 7D and 7D2?  Or am I seeing some inherent difference in the cameras.
    Thanks,
    Steve

The Adobe Standard profile is an attempt by Adobe to make the look of the camera be the same across different models; however, improvements in sensor technology and processing may lead to some differences so maybe you’re very sensitive to any color differences or maybe there is something wrong.  When the 7D Mark II is cooler is this after you’ve neutralized the WB by eyedroppering on a neutral object (gray card) or could it be the camera detecting a cooler WB, itself.
A lot of what you’re wondering about could be cleared up by more careful description of the process you’ve followed to ensure the WB is the same between the two cameras—whether it could be a difference in camera detection of WB or a difference in LR rendering of colors other than neutral due to Adobe Standard profile inter-model differences or just a mistake where neutrals aren’t neutral in your comparison.
If you’d like a separate opinion, post two comparable raw files, one 7D and 7D Mark II, and a screenshot of an X|Y  side-by-side in Lightroom that shows the differences you’re seeing.  Others would be able to say if the differences you’re seeing are within expectations or not.

  • RH7 and large project file handling

    Hello
Does RoboHelp 7 handle a larger number of topic files than
    earlier
versions? I am investigating whether it might be worthwhile
    upgrading
from X5 to 7, and the possibility of being able to handle a
    project
with over 3000 topics would be a distinct advantage.
    Thanks in advance
    M.

    Welcome to the forum.
I don't think any change has been made there but why would
it? 3,000 topics has never been an issue. I am running merged
webhelp and two of the projects have around 4,000 topics.
RH7 makes it easier to work with the topics. See my site if
you want some more information about it.

  • I was working on a tune all day, I quit Logic 9 then re opened it and the project file had reverted back to how it was 7 hours earlier when I had started. Can't find any evidence of the up-to-date project file and no Project File Backups folder

I was saving the file all day at regular intervals,
never happened to me before btu has now happened twice in the last week
it's a real version off logic too, no crack

Have you looked in Time Machine? Even if you're not connected, it still does little backups throughout the day.

  • Any way to prevent dupes in Premiere Project file?

Due to working with both PluralEyes as well as multiple editors on the same project, I deal with importing a lot of XML and PRPROJ files into existing project files that I've worked with.
This, on a large scale, becomes untenable because every time I import another editor's work or a synced sequence, I get duplicates of all my media in the project. I'm trying to figure out if there any way to have Premiere check to see if the media is already imported, and reference that media in the imported sequence? If not, I will just keep getting larger and larger project files with multiple references to the same media, because both me and my other editors are working with the same media, but for different sequences.
As far as I can tell, when you import an XML, or even a sequence from another Premiere project, it creates new master clips for every clip used in the imported sequence. It does not recognize that you may already have a master clip that you're using in another sequence that is referring to the same media.
So if you want to keep both sequences in your project, you need to keep both master clips. If you delete a master clip from your bin, it will not stay in the sequence(s) that refer to it, it will get cut out, leaving a big steaming crater where it once was. Even if the sequence is not currently open. This is one of the things I loved about FCP7. You could delete every single one of your master clips and your sequence would be totally unaffected. You could even recreate the master clips by dragging them from your sequence to the bin.
I think if there really is no way to manage these duplicates, this is a HUGE problem for professionals who are working in environments with multiple editors. This isn't just a "well, learn how to deal with a new editing system" - this is actually a deal-breaker; and actually the only one that I see REALLY preventing Premiere from being the go-to choice for larger post houses. This problem becomes so big so fast that it makes true collaborative editing downright impossible. In my office we might have three people on a project, all editing and revising segments and passing them back and forth. On FCP7 this was easy as pie - we'd just cut and paste between project files and use basic versioning best practices. In Premiere, our project files quickly become nightmares and work is often inadvertently deleted or lost.
    I would like to see:
    - Smart media handling when importing sequences and projects. Premiere should look at the filenames and file location and attempt to relink any duplicate media. If it stumbles, it should ask for help like FCP.
    - A media consolidation inspection feature. I'd love to see an option for inspecting your project for duplicate media references. When found, Premiere should automatically consolidate.
    - Streamlined sequence exporting. You should be able to export a single sequence. I know there's some version of this in Project Manager, but we all know it should be easier than this!
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Link Master Clips to media on drives, not to sequences.
How would you like the feature to work?
"The selection you are deleting contains clip references in one or more sequences. If you continue these clip references will all be deleted. Do you want to continue?"  In short, I never want to see this warning again. I *need* to be able to delete master clips from my project without having media deleted out of sequences.
Why is this feature important to you?
Editors need to stay organized from the beginning. Professional editors don’t edit birthday parties; we often have large quantities of different kinds of media, need to know where it is, need to access it quickly, and don’t need unnecessary things in the way.
Organization exists in one place: the project panel.  The less that’s in the project panel, the smaller the project file size is, the faster the project file opens, closes and saves, but most importantly: the easier it is to find what you need, fast.
The reasons for working in multiple project files are endless. When you import a seq from another project, you also get the clips used in it. Often times these clips are already present in the project, which is why you now include a “don’t allow duplicates” checkbox in your import dialogue box (which btw doesn’t work when we’re working with Merged Clips painstakingly built in other project files).
While you might fix that Merged Clips bug, I still don’t know why you won’t just let me clean stuff up myself. Why are you trying to save me from myself? I know where my media is and Premiere knows where my media is: on my drive.
A professional editing program should not try to save people from themselves. It’s why I left FCP for you. You have a great, powerful suite of programs (that I’d pay a lot more for than I do now btw)… but I need to stay organized, not be unnecessarily prevented from doing so.
Please listen to us and make this fix.

  • Project file location...an issue?

I used to be warned by a supervisor to place FCP project files on the internal drive because it was worse to run the project directly from the ext. drive, even the one with the same media. (So the project file is on the computer and the media on an external).
Now years later I can't remember the reasoning and would like to see if others have opinions or if this is true, if you know a more detailed explanation.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
AFAIK the problem could be if your media drive (ussually not the system drive) is the same where you locate your project files. Reading/writing video media could be so disc intensive that could affect your FCP project performance if you have to use it to store the project itself.
Probably how much it could affect your performance depends on how complex are your projects (i.e. a lot of nesting/sequences, graphic files, effects, etc) and the codec that your video (i.e DV).
I prefer use my internal system HD just for apps and any of the other two (one internal and ne FW) as media and/or project files.
    My two cents . . . I hope !

  • Best Practices, Project Files with External Drives

I've found bits of discussion here and there, but I would like some further clarity.
For performance and stability is it best to have the Final Cut Pro Documents directory on an External HardDrive and the Project File on the desktop?
Ideally I would like to have all the files for each client project on a separate Hard Drive for working and storage purposes. Is this generally what others are doing? I've had some editors not do this, and I end up searching around for clips and project elements on the main hard drive, which makes me nervous that I will miss something for archiving.
Also, with some critical projects I've been making a second copy of the external hard drive at various stages of the project in case of drive failure. I guess a swappable raid system might be an option, but I really like the plug-in play of firewire, not to mention they're cheap.
Any insights into how others are managing projects, files and storage would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I keep all my projects on the internal drive (main system drive) and all the media on the externals or secondary internal drive. I back up the project files each night to one of the externals (the one with the media of the project I am currently working on) and a USB Thumb Drive. I do this redundant backup as the project file is gold...without this your project is lost. Tapes you can always recapture.
When I start a project, I designate the scratch drive. That way, all the captures and renders go to that drive. If I change projects I am working on from day to day, then I go into my settings and change the scratch drive, so that I keep things where they belong....and so they don't end up scattered across my system.
Backing up my drives? Cloning the media drives? Unnecessary IMHO. If you lose a drive, you still have the project file and you simply re-capture. And I have never lost a media drive yet...
But, it you want to be safe about it, get a RAID and make it the kind of RAID that makes duplicates of the media on several drives. Not sure what the RAID type that is.
