Canon HV10 - MBP 2.16 with 2gb Ram - Final Cut Express HD

Hi All,
I am looking at purchasing the Canon HV10 camcorder on Tuesday but want to make sure that it is not only compatible with a MBP and FCEHD but also usable.
Obviously I am buying this cam for the HD technology so would like to know if the MBP will be able to handle editing in HD, are there any limitations I should know about?
I have been struggling with the decision between the Canon HV10 and the Panasonic GS500 (SD), I am worried I am wasting my money on a HD camcorder if my MAC and software are not upto the task of editing.
As mentioned I am planning on buying this on Tuesday so hopefully someone will be able to reply before then.
Cheers.

Search this forum: there is at least another thread on HV10 compatibility with FCE...

  • What's involved with upgrading to Final Cut Express HD?

I was just wondering what is involved with upgrading to High Definition. My current computer is a PowerBook G4 and I did not know if this would support the HD. What percentage of users are still using the regular and what percent have upgraded to HD.
I figured that when I buy a new Mac I would upgrade the HD, but until that point I'd stick with the regular resolution. I would need to buy a new HD video camera too.
    Thanks for any thoughts!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD (3.0 and 3.5) is not only for HD editing, it's the new name for Final Cut Express since version 3.0, and you can edit in HDV or SD with the same product.
HDV is pretty demanding on computer power, RAM and storage.
Altough a G4 1,0 GHz meets the minimun requirements to do HDV, pay attention to video card itself. See spec section for FCE HD:
"Macintosh computer with 500MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 (550MHz for PowerBook G4) or Intel Core Duo
    512MB RAM
Display with 1024-by-768 (or higher) resolution
An AGP or PCI Express graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme or an Intel GMA integrated graphics processor in MacBook or Mac mini
Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
    QuickTime 7.0.4 or later
HDV features require 1GHz or faster processor and 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended)
500MB disk space required for applications; additional 16GB of additional storage space for Soundtrack and LiveType content (can be installed on separate disks)
    DVD drive for software installation"
A big monitor is also a good idea (kind of one to one pixel at displaying video:the 23" Apple cinema HD display 1920 X 1200 pixels or greater).
Think about an external hard drive to store your captured media.
In the camcorders line-up, it's better to choose a tape recording based one (no hard disk, nor DVD nor media card recorder), because FCE HD allows capture directly from a such camcorder (altough it's possible to download from other sources and convert your material to something that FCE can handles without rendering. A 3 CDD one is better (I own the fabulous FX-1). Many HDV camcorders allows down conversion directly from capturing process: so we can edit in SD format with the same material.
Currently, HDV can be edited on FCE HD, but you will have to print to tape your edited HDV content to keep it in HDV format. You cannot burn HDV or blue-ray DVD ( aka high definition DVD) from iDVD 6 and watch it on a HD TV set.
There are some HD DVD burners around the corner ($$$ to buy and blank DVDs are not cheap) but the choice of software is very limited.
HDV is simply ashtoning to watch on HD tv set and it's the future.
I think you can count on an instant 200$ rebate if you buy a new mac and FCE HD on apple store:

  • Logic stops recording (MBP 2.16 with 2GB Ram, M-Audio Firewire 1814)

    Hello everyone
My Logic 8 sometimes stops recording with an error like System overload, could not proceed recording. I tried to recorded only two audio tracks with no plugins, so that should not be a problem, also there was no other application started.
I guess, it is a problem with the m-audio driver. I use the newest driver (1.8.2).
Anyone guesses how to solve the problem? It is quite annoying if you record and it just stops in the middle of your best take ever...
Don't even know what would happen, if i would try to record 8 or 16 or 24 tracks at once in a studio situation...
    Sincerely
    kapeh

I'm also having major problems with my MBP and Logic - I'm about to start a new thread...
I wouldn't necessarily blame the m-audio - I have attached the Apogee Ensemble and HDs from my G5 dual 2.7 and tried to play songs which were working fine on that - not a hope! I'm using a lot of Kontacts, as I use the East West Orchestral Library, and I can hardly get one to play, let alone the 16 or so I can run on the G5...
I've run X-Bench, checked all settings - the only two things I can see might be the problem are 2GB or ram instead of 4.5, and a 5400 HD instead of a 7200 (although all song and audio files are on external 7200 FW HDs).

  • Strange clicking noise with audio in Final Cut Express?

I recently imported some new audio in to FCE. When I previewed it, the audio played fine however when I added it into the timeline there was a strange clicking/tapping noise playing with the audio? It is in MP3 format and I've never had a problem with using MP3 format in FCE before? If the audio format needs to be changed how do I do it?

You can convert the audio to the correct format for FCE by using Quicktime 7.
Open the MP3 file in Quicktime 7 and then go to the menu File > Export.
From the drop down menu on the Export pane, choose Sound to AIFF.
Click the Options Button and once the options pane opens choose:
Click OK, then save  the exported file to a location of your choosing.
Import the file you just converted into FCE and you should be good to go.

  • What CD digital format to work with in Final Cut Express

I am having reel to reel AUDIO tapes(circa 1960) transferred to digital format by a third party vendor. What digital format should I request (audio CD's?) back, so that I can work with it using Final Cut Express(3.5.1).

The best format would be AIFF files @48kHz. Regular audio CDs are 44.1kHz. You can convert audio from CDs in QuickTime Player. (You might need QTPro; I'm not sure.)

  • Will final cut express work with a sony DCR-SR40

I got a sony DCR-SR40 camcorder for christmas an imovie won't work with it - will final cut express do the job?

First of all, welcome to the forum.
That camcorder uses a USB interface, correct? FCP and
iMovie can only import via FW. For hard drive
camcorders, you must import the footage like you
would files from an external HD. Then you can work
with the files in FCP or iMovie.
Good luck and happy New Year.
This Camera supports Mpeg -2 files I have had no end of problems importing this into I movie. Bought the software recomended by Sony (Capty MPEG ..whatever) cost £65 and is rubbish, so bought the Quicktime MPEG 2 codec plugin for £15, got the picture not the sound. What plug in do I need for the Audio, or should I ditch the camera and go for a Firewire version.

  • Performance with 2GB RAM and SSD

I own a late 2010 MBA, 13" baseline model with 2GB RAM, w/SSD.  I am using Snow Leopard, and it runs perfectly.  I would like to upgrade to ML to sync with ipad, but a concerned with performance.  I use my MBA for word processing, emails, and internet surfing, including occasional movie downloads.  I cannot upgrade the RAM on this model.  I would therefore very much appreciate if someone who has run the latest versio of ML on this model can inform me of its performance w/2GB RAM and an SSD drive.  (I know it can run; I want to know how it runs).  Thanks very much!

Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. Technically my memory tops out at 3gigs, but I can get 4 in there if I insist (though the machine won't take full advantage).
After a considerable amount of research, and hearing some horror stories of some folks who dove straight into Lion on older machines, I opted on upgrading memory to 3gig, backing up all my data, then running a clean install of Snow Leopard. I then reinstalled all my stuff, followed with a run of Monolingual (a shareware program that removes unnecessary languages and builds), then ran OnyX (another shareware) to run scripts and check/repair permissions.
Works fantastic. Machine is operating perfectly on 10.6.8 and with the memory upgrade and clean drive its running faster than ever. Definite new breath of life in the machine.
As per memory upgrade, I'd recommend going to Crucial. They're very Mac friendly, customer oriented, and reasonably priced. They have a small program you can download that scans your machine to determine the correct chip required, then brings you stright to an info and ordering page. I managed to get a 2gig chip with shipping for about $25. With the Snow Leopard upgrade total cost was under $60 for resuscitation.

  • I have a macbook with 2 512 mb ram, and wanting to at least replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS If I do that?

I have a macbook with 1 gb ram, 2 rams with 512 mb. I am planning to replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS if I replace one of them? Please help. Thanks.

If you want to upgrade your RAM it;s very easy on most MacBooks with the removable battery. We'll need to know the model to further advise you. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
    1,1 (Early 2006) can handle 2gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can handle 3gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    3,1 (Late 2007) can handle 4gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

  • Anyone can confirm that Lion runs as smooth as Snow Leopard with 2GB RAM?

    Hello,
I want to install Lion on my 1st gen Air, with 2GB RAM. With Snow Leo, sometimes i have to quit Safari because of the RAM is running low.
So i don't want to upgrade if Lion eats more RAM than Snow Leo.
Can anyone confirm that is it worth to install Lion on a laptop with 2GB RAM?
    Thanks

I have a late 2007 2.0GHz Macbook with 4GB of RAM. Snow Leopard ran beautifully on it ( I am a web developer and video editor ).
I clean installed Lion last week and it is very sluggish. It'll often hang and 'spinning beach ball' when doing the simplest tasks such as trying to scroll through a web page, switch applications, open a print dialogue box, etc.
The new UI, animations, and some of the new features of Lion are nice, but I'm considering switching back to Snow Leopard. As a power user on an "older" machine, Lion just doesn't cut it. Depending on what you use your laptop, you might have a fantastic experience with Lion. It certainly takes more video memory, so it's likely newer machines won't struggle with it at all. my concern is that the simple elements of the OS have problems running on my machine, meaning one of two things: 1) Lion is built to run well on newer machines with newer hardware or 2) Lion is built poorly. It seems more likely the former is true. in either case, if you have a "base" machine like Macbook or Mac Mini 2008 or older i'd say stick with SL. otherwise upgrade to your heart's content.

  • Canon HV10 Not Recognized By Final Cut Express HD

Final Cut Express will not initialize my new HV10. iMovie has no problem downloading so I do not believe it is my computer, a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. Anyone know if this a problem with the software?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Not only Canon HV10,
my Sony HCR-HC3E also has this problem.
The quality of footage after capture is very poor.
When I use iMovie to capture the footage,
iMovie show that it is using the codec 1080i25.
Final Cut Express HD has not provide this codec,
    only has 1080i50 and 1080i60.
I have ask about this, the feedback is that there is no
    codec that call 1080i25.
    How can I do?
There are the samples of my problem.

  • Does anyone of you use a HD-camcorder like Canon Legria HF G10 and cut films with Final Cut Express.

Does anyone of you use a HD-camcorder like Canon Legria HF G10 and cut films with Final Cut Express 4.0.1. I did not buy this product yet but ask before. Now I have 4GB RAM and i5 MacBooK Pro. Do any problems exist using FCE having made films with this camera?
I save the films als QuickTime films (mov) and create DVDs with iDVD.
Will the data be too many if I make films with such a camera (HD) so that 1 hour of film cannot be burned to one DVD (or if is not necessary to film with such a good quality because in iDVD the film looses its quality?).

I was able to find this info regarding the camera:
    AVCHD 1080/50i. 1080/25P (Maximum AVCHD 24Mbps)
    Recording Modes
    MXP 24Mbps / FXP 17Mbps / XP+ 12Mbps / SP 7Mbps / LP 5Mbps
The 1080/50i (interlaced) modes will work with FCE. PAL in this case. 60i is NTSC.

  • Does anyone have experience with using a Canon Vixia HF M52 Camcorder with Final Cut Express?

I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder that is compatible with my Mac OS X (10.6.8) that will work well with Final Cut Express 4.0.1  I have downloaded the camcorder support info from Final Cut Express that list many capital camcorders.  I've used Sony tape based camcorders in the past.  I'm looking for High Definition.  I can stick with a tape based camcorder, but thought I would look at the Canon Vixia HF M52 as an alternative, which is listed as compatible.  I would like to download directly from the camera to FCE.  I film in the wilderness, like having an optical zoom of 20 or greater (yes, I use a small tripod). Does anyone have experience with the Canon Vixia?  And if not, but you really like another camcorder that you can recommend, what is it?

The Vixia HF M52 is an AVCHD camcorder and should work perfectly fine with Final Cut Express 4 (4.0.1).
The published "camcorder support list" has never been up to date and I would not take it to be a definitive list of compatible camcorders.
One note, however, the Vixia HF M52 supports a number of different shooting modes.  I suggest sticking with the AVCHD 1920 x 1080i / 60 fps mode for use with FCE.   FCE does not support progressive modes except in 720p25/30 (which the M52 does not seem to shoot anyway); nor does FCE support any 24 fps modes.

  • HT2948 Will Final Cut Express 4 work with the new Canon XA10 AVCHD ??

I'm in the process of shopping for new cameras for my students. We edit on Final Cut Express 4 HD. I want to buy the Canon XA10camwras which record to SD cards.  I keep reading AVCHD video and am new to the technology. The B&H website says this camera :
    Product Highlights
    1/3" CMOS Sensor
    Native 1920 x 1080
    24Mbps AVCHD Recording
    60i, PF30, PF24, Native 24p
    64GB Internal Flash Drive
    Flash Memory
The XA10 Professional Camcorder allows users to record up to 24 hours of clear high definition video to a 64GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory cards. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory cards when the memory becomes full.
Video can be copied from the XA10's internal drive to removable SD memory cards. That makes it easy to insert the card into your computer or HDTV's card reader and view your recorded footage immediately. Double Slot Recording allows recording to two SD cards simultaneously, providing an automatic backup while shooting.
    AVCHD Codec
The XA10 features the AVCHD codec. AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) was announced in 2006 and is quickly becoming the standard for professional camcorders. AVCHD utilizes MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression technology similar to the technology used in Canon's HD DSLRs. In addition to professional grade camcorders, AVCHD is very popular in the consumer market and as a result most nonlinear editing software, both professional and consumer, have full support for the codec; this makes for easy compatibility with the XA10 no matter what system you choose.
Will I be able to take out the SD cards, put them in a card reader, and simply log and transfer into Final Cut Express? Again, I'm a novice and don't know what a lot of this means.
    Thanks!!!!

FCE should work with the 60i (interlaced) footage this camera produces.
Also you should be able to load the SD and capture.
I do not have one or used one with FCE, the specs indicate it should.
Maybe a current owner can chip in their experiences.

  • Does Final Cut Express Work with Canon XF300 or Kodak Zi8?

Question... I JUST purchased Final Cut Express 4. Ihave a Cannon XF 300 and I have the XF plugin software but it doesn't to appear to have worked.
I used the same software at work..except work computers use Final Cut Pro and it works beautifilly... How did you get your Copy of Express to recognize your MXF files... or any files that came from your Canon XF for that matter?
While I'm on that note.. i alternatively use a Kodak Zi8 HD for vlogging and Final Cut tells me it can't recognize the files... ***?!? They're MOV files!  Isn't that a native to apple format?
Feels like I ****** away almost 200 dollars..

The Zi8 records to .mov files but uses an H.264 codec.   A QuickTime .mov file can be created using any one of a long list of audio and video codecs.  Just because it's a .mov file doesn't mean it's compatible with any & every app.
The XF300 records to MPEG-2 Log GOP
Neither can be used directly in Final Cut Express
Both will need to be converted to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.   I suggest using MPEG Streamclip to convert your raw video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec in order to edit in FCE.  MPEG Streamclip is free; but you will also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Component if you do not already have it on your Mac.  ($19 from the Apple Online Store)
An alternative would be to Log/Transfer using Final Cut Pro into QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Then transfer the files to your Mac that has Final Cut Express.
