Canon Legria FS19 camcorder supported in iMovie 11?
Hi there,
I would like to ask whether my Camcorder Canon Legria FS 19 will be among the supported cameras in iMovie 11. Because I was unable to find it among the supported cameras on the site.
I would like to know whether it makes sense to upgrade for me or not.

No it's not compatible. Even the camcorders that are listed as compatible (eg Legria HF20 / HF200 aren't compatible. Just do a search on 'Legria' and 'Interlacing' and you will find many tales of woe.

IMovie 11 not importing audio from Canon Legria FS19
Hello everyone,
I have a Canon Legria FS19 which was working perfectly with iMovie 11 until the patch 9.0.8 and then whenever i tried importing videos, their was no audio, what would be a green box with the audio levels in it was just a grey box and whenever i try previewing any footage in the import from camera window, iMovie crashes, does any one know how to fix it

Canon Legria HF M406 Compatable with imovie?
Hi!
If someone could give me some basic advice it would be very useful. I am looking at buying an HD video camera and would like it to work as seemlessly as possible with apple and iMovie. Will iMovie import video directly from a Canon Legria HF M406? My other chioce of camera is the Panasonic HDC-SD90, and as far as a i know this works well with iMovie, am i correct?

Above is Apple's list of compatible camcorders. The HFM41 is listed, so your camcorder should work fine.
That is, if you have iMovie 11. It records in AVCHD so if you are using Imovie 06 there would be a problem. The panasonic is also a fine camcorder.
So both camcorders seem to be ok for iMovie 09-11.
You will, of course, need to make your decision based on cost and what you are using them for. I have found that for basic uploading to the web, say YouTube, any modern camcorder pretty much works.

*NO* Samsung camcorder supported in iMovie 10?
I just upgraded to Mavericks and to iMovie 10. Lo and behold, I see that NO Samsung camcorders are supported. What the heck? I've been using my Samsung HMX-H300BN in the previous version of iMovie with no issues. Is there a reason NO Samsung camcorders are listed on the compatibility page? Are there plans to add them? Does camera support generally get added in subsequent releases? It is really disheartening. This is not an old camera at all.
any camcorder using AVCHD (or 'antique' miniDV) is supported by iMovie.
That list you're reflecting to, is only mentioning devices, Apple has tested.
Apple can not tewst ANY camera on the market.
There are also many popular cams from Sony, JVC, or Panasonic notl listed…

Is the Canon DM-GL2 A supported on iMovie '09?
When I hook up my Canon DM-GL2 A to my iMac through either firewire or USB to import video through iMovie, my camera is not detected.
The camera must be connected via Firewire (not USB) to import the DV Stream format.
Read the manual for further instructions. It should work with any version of iMovie. -

You need to do some homework about your software and camcorders and what will make life a whole lot easier for you. HINT - a miniDV cam with Firewire.

Canon Legria HF20 - Compatibility with iMovie
I have just ordered a Canon Legria HF20 camcorder. However, I have a concern.
I just checked Apple's offical list of iMovie 09 compatible camcorders, and the PAL version isn't listed as a compatible camcorder. However, the NTSC version is, which is called the Cannon Vixia HF20. I am not sure if the reason why the PAL version isn't listed is just because they haven't got around to testing it.
Can anyone confirm whether the HF20 works with iMovie? Am I safe to assume that if the NTSC version is compatible, then the PAL version will also be compatibleSee:

Camcorder no longer supported by iMovie. What do I do?
I see that the Canon Legria HF S20 is not supported any more by iMovie. I'm not going to be changing this camcorder soon, it's still really good! I now have hours of video on the camcorder that I can't watch or save on my Mac. Are there any ways around this, or am I doomed to be left behind?

You may be able to import the clips into iMovie if you put the SD card from the camera in a reader and download the them to you Mac using the Finder (the SD card will appear as a removable drive) then import into iMovie from there.

Help needed: How to import video from Canon Legria Camcorder FS306?
Dear all,
After happily purchasing Canon Legria Camcorder FS306, I realise that my IMOVIE HD could not detect the camcorder when connected to my Macbook pro.
Have 2 questions here:
1. Is it impossible for IMovie HD to detect newer camcorders? Should I then upgrade to IMOVIE09?
2. Currently, Canon Legria Camcorder FS306 is not listed as 1 of the supported camcorders for IMOVIE09. It is one of the newer models. Is IMOVIE09 able to import video from this camcorder now? Or in the near future? Or it may never be supported?

GamYou would need imovie 09 to use this camcorder.
This camcorder is not on the iMovie 09 supported list. However, every Canon camcorder since 2008 has supported iMovie 08 and 09, so odds are good that this one will, too. Odds are good that it works right now. IF you want to know for sure, call Canon. ....or take your camera to an Apple Store and hook it up.
It might be possible to do some manual conversions and continue to use iMovie 6. For example, you could try converting the MPEG2 files to DV using a tool like MPEG Streamclip. You would also need the $20 Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. I find iMovie 09 to be a much better editor, but if you are comfortable with iMovie 06, this might be worth a try for you. -

+With the PAL version, iMovie 09 incorrectly tags the 50i content as being progressive, and the 25p content as being interlaced. In contrast, with the NTSC version, iMovie apparently correctly identifies the 60i content as being interlaced and the 30p content as being progressive.+
+This results in the following outcomes:+
+For 50i content:+
+- When the 50i content is previewed in iMovie, it shows the horizontal combing effect on fast motion content as iMovie thinks that it is progressive and doesn’t do its normal adjustments (as it does for the Vixia version) when displaying interlaced footage.+
+- If you play the AIC file in Quicktime X, the interlacing lines also are visible, as Quicktime doesn’t know that it is interlaced footage.+
+- When the 50i content is exported from iMovie, the progressive tag remains on the file. Therefore, if the footage is played in Quicktime X the horizontal combing effect remains, as Quicktime once again doesn’t know that it is interlaced footage.+
+- When the ‘Deinterlace Source Video’ option is selected when exporting from iMovie using 'Export using Quicktime', the footage doesn’t get deinterlaced as iMovie identifies the footage as being progressive.+
+For 25p content:+
+- When 25p content is displayed in iMovie, it appears to display properly. It also displays properly if exported from iMovie and viewed in Quicktime X, despite the fact that it is incorrectly tagged as being interlaced.+
+- However, an issue arises with the 25p content if a special effect is applied within iMovie that alters frame size (ie. Stabilize, PIP, Crop, Ken Burns effect, Wipes, Ripple, Zoom etc). These special effects are referred to as scaling effects. Normally, if scaling effects are applied to interlaced 1080 footage, iMovie deinterlaces the content from 1080i to 540p. This has been a deliberate feature in iMovie since iMovie 09 (Version 8.0.0) to avoid scaling artifacts associated with interlaced footage when a scaling effect has been applied.+
+- In relation to progressive content, iMovie doesn’t normally make any adjustment to the resolution when scaling effects are applied as scaling artifacts aren’t an issue for progressive content. However, as a consequence of iMovie incorrectly tagging the 25p content as being interlaced, iMovie will treat the footage as interlaced footage when special effects are applied, and unnecessarily reduce the resolution from 1080 to 540. Obviously, this is a bad outcome as it means that the resolution is unnecessarily reduced by half.+
I haven't had the opportunity to test iMovie 11, but I just wanted to post a warning to anyone that may be influenced by the official list of supported camcorders that they should confirm whether this issue has been resolved in iMovie 11 before they purchase the camcorder.
As I not intending to use iMovie going forward (as I can't look past the lack of native AVCHD editing) it would be great if someone else who own this camcorder could confirm whether this issue has been resolved in iMovie 11. If the problem remains, the issue should really be highlighted to Apple, and the camcorder removed from the list.A warning doesn't solve the problem, but using a software utility can.
This is the cause of the problem:

When iMovie detects interlaced video it deinterlaces it causing a loss of vertical resolution. (BAD) But, deinterlaced video can have effects that "scale" video applied without ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
When iMovie detects progressive video it does NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
So the best solution is to shoot 30p. iMovie will detect progressive video and NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
The next best solution is to shoot 60i and use NO scaling FX.
The next best solution is to shoot 60i and use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag 60i as 30p. Now iMovie will not deinterlace causing a loss in vertical resolution, but you MAY still see artifacts when you use scaling FX.
For PAL shooters, you can shoot 50i which iMovie will think is 25p and so will not deinterlace causing a loss in vertical resolution, but you MAY still see artifacts when you use scaling FX.
Or, you can use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 50i -- which iMovie will deinterlace, causing a loss of vertical resolution but also preventing any artifacts.
However, the best solution is to shoot 25p and then use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 25p. When iMovie detects progressive video it does NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
So there is a solution for both NTSC and PAL shooters -- shoot progressive. PAL users, however, must use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 25p.
If you have already shot 60i, use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag as 30p and be careful in your use of scaling FX.

PS: you should use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag ALL interlace (50i/60i) video as progressive so iMovie will not deinterlace your video! It's not just for the Canon Legria HF20 / HF200. -
Issue with Canon Legria HF20 and iMovie 09
I am having an issue with using the Canon Legria HF20 (which is the PAL version of the Canon Vixia HF20) with iMovie 09, and I am trying to confirm whether other people experience the issue.
I recently purchased the video camera, and while I am having no issues shooting in 25p, I am having an issue with 50i. When I shoot in 50i and import into iMovie at 'Full-Original Size" the footage displays with a horizontal interlaced combing effect, whereby if the camera moves left or right, horizontal lines appear, which causes the edges of things to look jagged. This is difficult to see in the small preview box, but is easy to see if you preview in full screen. I have been told that this shouldn’t occur as iMovie should recognise that the footage is interlaced and adjust the footage when being previewed (thanks Steve Mullen for confirming that). Again, there is no problem with shooting in 25p.

Also, when I export the footage from iMovie using 'Export using Quicktime' at either 1080i or 720p, the footage remains interlaced even though I have selected 'Deinterlace Source Video'
So far I have been unable to get to the bottom of this issue. I have spoken to Apple and they are saying that while the Canon Vixia HF20 (NTSC Version) is on the official list of cameras supported by iMovie, the Canon Legria (PAL Version) isn’t, although they couldn’t say whether this could have something to do with the issue I am having.
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could confirm whether they have experienced this issue. Can you please confirm that you are using the Legria version and not the Vixia version of the Camera.

Message was edited by: Casho3Well, it seems to me that it looks the same. I am not an expert here, but it occurs to me that you can either shoot in 25p or de-interlace it from 50i. I think it gives the same quality but the latter is more complicated unless you have the Final Cut.

I would like to import from my camera canon legria HV videos to imovie, but my macbook air is not recognizing my camera, i go out from my camera with firewire and go in the macbook air by usb. My camera is on and the tape is on "Play" .

looking at one of my files format is
Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Right, 48.000 kHz
So it seems that imovie re-packed my movies to mov but keeping MPeg2 as video codec.
Then I don't understand the point of this. If the codec used is still MPEG2
why not just the file as it is ?
What I don't like is that import / export take times even when it is (seems) useless.
I used to use tools like VLC and avidemux to do some change on the video.
but it is now impossible as they won't be able to open the mov files
anyway, If I understand valuable replies from both of you I have no other choice.

How to import video files from Canon HG20 HD camcorder to iMovie 09?
Hi. I have no idea how to this. I have a Canon HG20 HD camcorder. It came with software that doesn't run on Mac. How do I import the videos I took in there into my iMovie? Do I need any special equipment? All I have now is the USB cable.
When I plug it in the computer sees it but the .MTS files cannot be clicked on and whenever I try to select a file and click "import" something bounces up and says it's not a camera archive.
Can someone please give me a step-by-step guide? I'm a confused newb here =)There's no need to manually import files on a Canon AVCHD camera like that - iMovie should be able to connect and see them automatically.
Attach the camera, and set it to movie playback mode. Some cameras require that you connect them to power while you're transferring media. You may also have to choose "Connect to PC" on the camera menu itself.
Open iMovie (if it doesn't launch automatically). Click on the Camera Import icon to the middle-left of the window (or click cmd-i). YOu should get an Import window showing you the clips on the camera/card, which you can choose individually or import all.
