Cant boot, filesystem error

hi.
I am using ext3. During last boot the root partition was checked and it gave me an error:
/dev/hdb5 Inode 144226 has imagic flag set
I have the options to repair the filesystem manually or reboot.
If i choose to reboot, I cant boot. I have a message saying that filesystem has errors and chech forced. So I see again the previous message about Inode.
Any ideas?
How to repair the filesystem?
didnt find something...

you can also choose repair manually. To do so you need to type root password, press enter and then run:
fsck.ext3 /dev/hdb5
or, if you don't want to be pressing [y] key, run:
fsck.ext3 -y /dev/hdb5

  • Unmountable Boot Volume error

After installing windows on my mac ive tried toget into it again but a blue error screen appears with UNMOUNTABLEBOOTVOLUME. I cant seem to switch back to mac as i didnt have the latests service package i needed to install it anyway so i turned off nmy computer to see if i could switch back to mac but i cant and that error just comes up for windows. Any clues on how to fix the problem?

I am having similar issues, but I'm still working on the main reason for the problem. We are trying to install Windows XP from our network installation system using WinPE.
If I format the drive as GUID partition table XP crashes with the UNMOUNTABLEBOOTVOLUME error...pretty much sounds like the installer doesn't understand GUID even though it is an XP Professional Service Pack 2 install base.
If I format the drive as an MBR partition table XP will load fine, but then I have the issues where the OS and OS chooser screen don't see the Windows partition as a bootable partition, and then I have to use rEFIt to boot into Windows.
If I install Windows XP from the same CD that I created the network install source files from the OS will load just fine on a GUID partition table.
So I, too, am having this same problem, but I'm trying to figure out what's different between the source CD and how the network install tools for unattended deployment change it.
You are using an install CD that is Windows XP with Service Pack 2, correct?

  • Everything 'exists in filesystem' Errors occurred, no packages were up

Something like 260 package updates failed to same error.
Really do not want to use --force
    Any ideas?

  • Cant boot G4 tower

    hi
ive been running a G4 tower 800mhz at work from an external lacie firewire drive with the latest tiger without any trouble so far.
however, since i took that drive home and connected it to my cube there to transfer some files, i cant boot from it any more.
the drive is completely fine and all my files are ok. just since i reconnected it at work, it doesnt boot anymore
it gets stuck at a standard blue apple desktop background.
ive done most of the things i could think of, including:
    - removing any startup items
    - single-user mode with some codes to reset vram etc
    - verbose mode doesnt give suspicious messages
    - verifying the disk using disk utility doesnt give errors
    - no third-party ram
any help? what can i do to make my disk bootable again?
any ideas why it became unbootable just by connecting it to another mac for like an hour or so?
    thanks a lot for suggestions
    maarten

no i didnt boot the cube from the external firewire drive. just connected it. went into my home folder on there, copied the files over, and disconnected it again
didnt do anything more with it
archive and install. sure a solution, but quite a pain. id prefer to find out whats wrong. i thought it might have to do something with permissions, but i repaired those and it didnt change anything. still stuck on startup....

  • Mkinitcpio upgrade: "exists in filesystem" error

When running pacman -Syu, I get the following errors:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    mkinitcpio: /lib/initcpio/hooks/keymap exists in filesystem
    mkinitcpio: /lib/initcpio/hooks/udev exists in filesystem

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
error: pacman exited with an error (256)
I assume this has to do with the changes to mkinitcpio mentioned on the front page
I have earlier modified the HOOKS line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata keymap uresume filesystems"
So, what do I do? Force the upgrade?

I'm getting the same error on yaourt -Syu (also occurs when trying to upgrade mkinitcpio)

    mkinitcpio: /lib/initcpio/udev/load-modules.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
The upgrade is from mkinitcpio 0.5.30-1 to 0.6.2-1 and to mkinitcpio-busybox 1.15.3-5 (new package)
I'm running x86_64. I can update other packages without problems.
Edit: I forced the upgrade of mkinitcpio and rebuilt the kernel image. The new image doesn't work (it can't find /sbin/udevd, which does exist). If I remove klibc-*, the kernel won't build at all (Can't build hook udev).

    Hello.
I had the same problem last week where i reinstalled arch 3 times becuse of root read only(only one computer).
    ************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root        *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount      *
    * it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw /                            *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the will                     *
    * reboot automatically.
When enter control -D it says something quick on screen about /dev/shm not mounted
and some text say bla bla use iofs8 bla bla use fuser i dont now what that mean.
I could not find any direct solution when google root read only, some think is a kernel bug ,some say hdd failure (i change hdd after 3 new installations with root read only)
Now my new install had worked for 2 days and im scared to death to shutdown computer

  • Cant boot past White screen

Cant boot from internal hard drive, stops at white screen with apple and spiral. I can boot from an external hard drive, and when i press alt on start to choose the external hard drive it shows both the macintosh hd and my external hard drive. Is there any way i can back up my internal hard drive from while booting from my external hard drive?

If you were running Snow Leopard then you can reinstall as follows:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you boot from your external drive and if the internal drive mounts on the Desktop and can be accessed, then you can copy your files onto the external drive or onto a second external drive.

  • R61 R&R won't start after "unmountable boot volume" error

    Hello all,
New user, first post - after problem, of course.
I have an R61 Thinkpad with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Has worked flawlessly for years, then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.
No problem - I re-start, hit the ThinkVantage button, then hit F11 to use the R&R hidden on a separate partition of the hard drive........I get the black screen with the big progress bar, ok, then a blue screen......then nothing.  Hangs up and sits there.  I have repeated this about 5 times now.
No problem! - I was smart enough to make an R&R CD set a while ago!  Put the primary R&R disk in the CD drive, start the machine, ThinkPad button, F12 this time to choose boot from CD.....much CD activity ensues and I once again get the black screen with the big progress bar.  It takes much longer, and I get teh blue screen - BUT - then it goes one extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" screen with the life preserver image.
Excellent, I thing - except it then hangs there.  Just sits there.  No disk activity.  No keys will do anything.
I can find no threads here or on any other forum with this particular issue.
Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi jim, welcome to the forums,
Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS, was there an entry in the boot list against HDD0?
Regardless of it being shown in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reseat the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe over time it's lost contact to the mainboard socket. If you don't know how to do this you can find out at the R61 movies site.
The next thing I would do is run a hard drive diagnosis check from a bootable cd, these can be downloaded from all HDD manufacturer's websites e.g. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.  It may be that the drive has simply gone bad after all those years of work.
Let us know how you get on

  • Unmountable Boot Volume error in Z61T

    Hi Members,
I just encountered the the Error Unmountable Boot volume error(Blue Screen)  in my Z61T Think pad laptop.
I'm not sure what caused this error. Is it possible to fix the error?
I tried to go in to Recovery Console using XP CD and then repair the OS, but unfortunately when i go to repair mode i get another error which says unable to recognize the hard drive. Im really confused as of what is the exact problem with my laptop and also im worried about that data.
appreciate if anyone can throw some light in to the issue and help me out in fixing the same.
    Thanks
    Rajesh

If you believe that your hard disk/file system may be corrupted, try using any bootable diagnostic cd.They are operating system independent and will let you know if your HDD is getting corrupted.
Try the data life guard diagnostics(bootable).
    Cheers and regards,

  • I upgraded from Dreamweaver CS4 to CS6. but now "an TFP error occured - cannot make connection to host". I spent hours with the host technician and we cant find the error. I reinstalled DW4 and it connects to host perfectly. Anyone else seen this problem?

I upgraded from Dreamweaver CS4 to CS6. but now when I want to upload I get "an TFP error occured - cannot make connection to host". I spent hours with the host technician and we cant find the error. I reinstalled DW4 and it connects to host perfectly. Anyone else seen this problem?
    Mac OS 10.8.5
None of these issues are causing the error in DW CS6. We have double checked all of them and we have everything exactly right. Also I have exactly the same SiteSetup in DW CS4 and that works perfectly well. Could there must be factor in 6 that didn't exist in 4? Something that isnt in the SiteSetup but in some hidden dialog box ?
I can also upload to my host using Fetch, a third party FTP. And as I said DW CS4 works fine. So the problem is not with my host, its with DW CS6 in particular.

Thank you Jon, that fixed it perfectly. You have saved me from going crazy. The only difference I see now is in "Server Name" it changed what I had entered (my ftp address) to "Remote Server"; which seems odd -- but it works!   Although I know there maybe also some other dialog box I have never seen
Of course I saw that menu item "Import"  and but I thought thats obviously not for me: "Why would I want to import an entire website?". I did not however see "Export the selected site" for thats only a tiny icon in the footer. However I would have thought the same:  "Why would I want to export my entire website?".
An observation: I've seen this problem in a lot of Adobe software, the menu-names of items are  obscure, non descriptive. What would be better would be for the menu names or popups to say "Export Site Setup settings" and "Import Site Setup settings"

  • Cant download itunes error 126 keeps popping up ,saying avfoundation cant be found

cant download itunes says it cant find avfoundation.error 126

This post (credit: user Gungho) explains that:
there are three things associated with this kind of error is a permissions issue, illegal characters, or a non-existent share point. To address the first possibility Get Info about the alias and check the permissions. You should have read and write access. For the 2nd remove any illegal characters in the name such as characters;: ", | * [] / \ = + <>. The . can only be used to separate the file name from the file type.
Could any of those things be happening? This link also has some good suggestions.
Here are some other things to try:
    Try to restart
    Perform a file system check
While starting, hold "Command + S"; once there type "fsck -fy"; once complete type "sudo shutdown -h now"
This user posted that it worked for him
