Hi,
I think you are telling us that this is to a PC, that you send an invite that they accept but nothing else seems to happen not even an Error log.
What have you done to set up your Mac and IChat to work ?
Was this working in Tiger ?
Which Version of AIM on a PC ?

video chatting in ichat was working fine until now. i've had my computer for a little more than a year. now it says that it cant support video chat, only audio.. help!

    Hi,
Make sure iChat is not starting up when the Mac does  (it records the "wrong" speed that is available).
Check what Internet Speed you are actually getting.

  • Can iChat have video chat with Windows Messenger?

Is there any way to use Jabber or other means to establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
Alternatively, does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hello Peter,
Is there any way to ... establish a video chat with an MSN Messenger user?
The best way is still with a Windows XP PC and MSN Messenger.
For use with your Mac, see the MSN, Yahoo, Win Messengers & iChat? FAQ. Jabber is text only.
There is a beta application called Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X that is an MSN Server client.
However, please note that the Mercury Messenger Webcam / Video Conference Support section, which I quote, in part, includes the following:
Video-conferencing is supported on Mac OS X, however it is receive-only, due to an incomplete JMF library for Mac OS X. The feature is still relatively new, and so some issues may occur in use.
Although Mercury Messenger (beta) will connect to the MSN Server, those comparing it with iChat AV's capability should certainly study the sections about the limitations and known issues.
If you get Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X working, please post back and let us know what you think of it.
... does anyone know if Virtual PC for Mac supports video chat with windows computers?
VPC for Mac does not support Firewire video, so it cannot use an iSight for video. Sorry, but I have not seen anyone post a method of using VPC that rivals the performance of using the same application on a Windows PC.
Also, VPC with the current version of Windows is so expensive that, at least where I live, it is often cheaper to buy a used, and sometimes a new, PC to run your PC software.
If you really MUST use PC software, I suggest running it on a PC.

  • "invite to video chat" is inactive

    Hello
I can't have video chat with my ichat6.0.1 in macbookPro with OS X10.7.3. The most of my icones in buddies is inactive.

    Hi,
Are you saying that Buddies in the Buddy list on the whole do not display Video iCons ?
They will appear "Flat" like this for Buddies that can do 1-1 chats or like this "Stacked", for those that can do 3 or 4 way chats.
Check the Video Menu that Video Chat Enabled is ticked (The words change for earlier versions).
Check in the View menu that Show Video Status is ticked.

  • Can't start Screen Sharing, Video Chat, or Audio Chat

    Hi there,
I've been through countless Apple Discussion and other website threads, but I can't figure this out.
I just got my dad a brand-new iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on it. I'm using a MacBook Pro, also with 10.8.3 on it. We're both using the Messages app, signed into our respective Google Talk accounts (not Apple IDs with Google email addresses).
But for the both of us, "Invite to Video Chat," "Invite to Audio Chat," and "Share Screen With..." are grayed out in the Buddies menu, even though both of us have "Video Chat Enabled," "Audio Chat Enabled," and "Screen Sharing Enabled" checked off. I unchecked the option to consolidate the various Buddy Lists in the Messages > Preferences > General pane, and when I go to my Gmail account's Buddy List, I see the four buttons underneath the list (with my dad's name highlighted), but only the "A" button is clickable--not the other buttons for Audio (the phone icon), Video (the camera icon), or Screen Sharing (the two rectangles layered over one another icon).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this (short of using a completely different method of screen sharing)?

    HI,
On your GoogleMail Page pull down your own Name/ID
    Click Account
    Choose "Products" from Menu.
Enable "Talk" (Sign in to Dashboard far right)
This is separate from the settings to actions on the Web Mail Page accessed in the Settings icon.
However I am not sure if the setting absent there if TALK has not been enabled as it was done some time ago for for me as well.
Jabber apps can have  Priority Setting to allow people to be logged in via several devices and be sure a messages goes to the right device at the time.
iChat version 3 through 5 had the same Priority as the Web Browser login and would stop text Messages getting through.
iChat would show the Buddy still on line if they were logged in via the web page at a later stage
but the Video and Audio green icons would disappear from the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom would be greyed out.
Messages has a default priority of 0 compared to iChat's 23.
However I have never managed to work out which end of the scale outranks the other.
Essentially logging in to Google Mail web page to Check things is likely to stop the ability to Video chat.
This is because Jabber app use a Protocol  called Jingle to connect and this is not compatible with the SIP iChat and Messages uses.
It is included in the Web Browser Plug-in you can get from Google.
The default setting for the Bandwidth setting is the NONE one.
However it can pay to set it to 500kbps.
This helps when  internet speeds that are faster vary too much for the Buffering in iChat and Messages to work.
In broad terms a 5% variance in a 10Mbps download speed can be 500kbps.
Forcing Message to only use 500kbps is fast enough for 4 way video chats but is well below any variance interference.
It can also help where the ISP slows the connection as it thinks it is a Peer-to-Peer file sharing event.
Video and Audio chats (including Screen Sharing) are peer-to-Peer connections.

  • IChat Video chat with AIM Buddy - Possible fix?

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions group. I received my MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple computer, just two days ago, and came upon this group after discovering the problems establishing a video chat with someone using AIM. With the help of "Rjin WI" I was able to verify that I could indeed have video chat Mac-to-Mac. This morning I decided to try something I should have tried on day one-I fired up AIM 5.9 on my PC, and tried to chat with myself.
I disabled all firewalls involved: the Mac firewall, the Windows SP2 firewall, and the SPI firewall on my Linksys router. I chatted with myself between two screen name for a few moments before initialising the video chat from the Mac, but was quite shocked to see on the PC "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." On the Mac was "Failed to start Video Chat because: (I) did not respond."
I tried a few more times just to be sure, but the error message was persistent. I kept looking for some button to press or question to answer in the invitation, but there was nothing to be found. Except for the "video" button in the AIM chat I had previously overlooked. I initialised the video chat from AIM, and what do you know, I received the invitation on the Mac, accepted, and was connected just fine.
I reenabled all of the firewalls again. And once again, I was able to have a video chat with myself when I sent the invitation from the PC. Trying from the Mac instantly gave me the error on the PC, and after timing out, the same error on the Mac.
Does anyone else have anything they can add to the mystery of iChat?

    Jason-
great post. i'll try and make my situation short and sweet, as I don't have the energy to try and describe every little "error" that my computer runs into. To make it short; just got the brand new macbook (thinking 'now i can actually video chat, unlike the isight which never worked and solutions/helpful advice via appletechs seemed to be non-existent). Low and behold the camera works perfectly...2x. At the time I was using airport for wireless connection, but I have since been using the computer with a linksys. Because the computer worked with the airport and not with the linksys, I thought this was were the problem existed...then the camera worked with a different user (with the linksys) so I scratched that idea. Anyways I have been trying to video chat with another macbook and there is no success whatsoever. We both get the msg " did not respond) when the user accepts, the camera icon goes "shaded" but then goes back to its normal state. Both firewalls were disabled, and both of us are using linksys. I also run vonage in my place if that could somehow play into this scenario. I apologize for such a poor post, but my energy regarding this matter is limited since I am so tired of trying get this video chat working. (first a worthless isight, then a macbook which can't even function with another macbook. in addition, to put it lightly, i am very dissatisfied with applecare regarding this issue.)

  • Using video chats in college... HELP!!

well its pretty clear that everyone must be having the same issues as me. everyone is moving into school and taking advantage of the free internet in the dorms but now video chats dont work!
    is there anyways around this?
im assuming its because the ports are closed and i gurantee no one is going to convince the school otherwise to open them
is there ways around this to allow us to have video chat to work! help guys! haha thanks so much

    Hello Broski7
You have landed in iSight Discussions.
If your built-in iSight passes the checks in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight, you can rule it out as a contributor to your problem.
If your iSight is not your problem, and your ONLY trouble is with iChat AV 3, you will need to concentrate on that one application.
If you can use iChat video outside the school's network, the problem must be related directly to using their LAN. Perhaps your school's IT or LAN administrators can help you. Have you asked them? If anyone else successfully use iChat video from behind the school network, have you tried their suggestions?
There are a number of people who have solved their iChat video problems at school. You can consider the suggestions that helped the users who posted these threads
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5113793
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4938159
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4631466
or some of the other links returned by this search of iChat AV 3 Discussions.
Perhaps you are not using iChat or have tried several different chat applications and KNOW that the problem is with the school's network. You say that you "gurantee no one is going to convince the school otherwise to open them". You may be right about that. Sometimes there is nothing you can do other than get outside the school's network and use a different internet connection.
    <hr width="85%">
Although I do not believe this is causing your problem, your system info shows that you are still using 10.4.8. Unless you have compelling reason to use the outdated OS software, you should update to the latest version using the following method:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (Intel).
Finish with another Permissions Repair immediately after you restart your MacBook.

  • Skype update includes video chat :-) just not for VZW devices :-(

What's the deal? DId VZW do something to ruffle the feathers of phone manufactures and software makers cause it seems that even thought their service is superior the devices are second rate. Same goes for the app support on popular VZW devices. Skype still doesn't have video chat for a single VZW device with a forward facing camera. Does anyone else find this odd?

    GreenRobot wrote:
Best network, biggest network, most expensive (in some peoples opinion), and the worst video chat rights. It Just doesn't add up. I Although I guess VZW spent a boat load on their 4g rights. I win some you lose some..
Thank you for your inquiry GreenhRobot. Adding to what was stated, Verizon Wireless and Skype are working on this a new service for 4G LTE Smartphones that will enable video calling. I am sorry that we do not have a launch date to share with you at this time. • MSN Messenger Video Chat???

    Hello all,
Does anyone know a way to have video chat with MSN Messenger users on either iPad or iMac??

Well Microsoft has a Messenger client for Mac but it doesnt offer video support. I have tried Adium, which works pretty well for everything, but it too doesnt offer video.
I was hoping that I was just out of touch with the mac world and that there was surely a solution for this but im beginning to think otherwise.
With all of the Messenger clients out there non of them support video chat, not even Microsofts very own.

  • I cant have a video chat with people without macs?! why?

i can have a video chat with anyone with a mac, but weneveri try to conenct to anyone else with a web cam it says there is a conenction problem. whats wrong? the version of i chat that i have is ichat av 3.1.8. please help! what do i do?

The problem is that there is no standard for audio/video that everyone uses.
Each IM provider has decided to use their own method of doing it, and they're all incompatible with each other.
It's possible to use iChat on Mac OS X to do an audio/video chat with someone using Windows, but only if that person is using the AIM protocol in either the AIM client or Trillian Pro.
The method that is generally recommended here for cross-platform audio/video chat is Skype. I don't like recommending them because of their misleading practices, closed proprietary protocols, and the fact that they treat Mac users as second-class citizens (and Linux users even worse), but for the moment they are probably your best bet.
WWDC is in a month, so after that we'll know whether Apple has added additional protocols or changed their methods for doing audio/video in Leopard's version of iChat. Personally i'm hoping for full support for both Jingle and SIP (open) standards, which will allow communication with Google Talk users on Windows and VoIP (soft)phones on every platform.
