Cant rip CD with abcde

I cant seem to rip an audio CD with abcde, I have always been able to, I think the last time I tired was before the systemd switch, I know get:
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: open: Permission denied
[ERROR] abcde: CD could not be read. Perhaps there's no CD in the drive?
as a normal user.
with sudo I get:
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: CDROMREADTOCENTRY: Input/output error
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: CDROMREADTOCENTRY: Input/output error
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: CDROMREADTOCENTRY: Input/output error
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: CDROMREADTOCENTRY: Input/output error
[WARNING] something went wrong while querying the CD... Maybe a DATA CD?
[INFO] The disc does not contain any tracks. Giving up...
I have not changed any abcde settings since it last worked, any ideas?
*EDIT
here is dmesg:
[ 87.993415] sr0: CDROM (ioctl) error, command: cdb[0]=0x52 52 01 00 00 00 0c 00 00 20 00
[ 87.993550] sr: Sense Key : 0x4 [current]
[ 87.993554] sr: ASC=0x8 ASCQ=0x2
[ 87.998265] sr0: unsupported sector size 67585.
I have tried many different, official audio CD's, even one that I know worked before.

It works on a different PC with no udev rules, also arch 64 bit
*EDIT ok it just started working again with:
sudo abcde
on the computer it previously did not want to work on, but it wont run without 'sudo'.
So, on computer A, at first I was not able to rip at all,
Then I put the drive into computer B, and was able to rip as a not root user made like this:
useradd -m -g users -G wheel,storage,power -s /bin/zsh jason
I then put the drive back into compter A, and was not able to rip as a user, only as root.
How can this be? the groups are identical apart from my user on A being in an extra custom group.
#Computer B:
jason@jason-pc ~ % groups jason
wheel storage power users
#Computer A:
admin@russell-server ~ % groups admin
wheel storage power things users
admin@russell-server ~ % abcde
cd-discid: /dev/cdrom: open: Permission denied
[ERROR] abcde: CD could not be read. Perhaps there's no CD in the drive?
admin@russell-server ~ %
