Canvas with swing

Hi,
I would like to drag and drop components to a Canvas. Shall I use Canvas with the Swing components?
Sometime back, I do remember reading an article saying not to mix swing components and awt components. Is the Canvas an exceptional case?
Any suggestions please.

why do you want a canvas
- just use a JPanel instead, (it has the paint() method you need)

Can I build a GUI application with SWING only without [import java.awt.*;]

I have seen several threads (in forums), books and tutorials about SWING and I see that they all mix SWING with AWT (I mean they import both Swing and AWT in their code).
The conclusion that comes out is:
It is good to learn about SWING and forget AWT as it won't be supported later. I have decided to do so, and I never include <<import java.awt.*;>> in my code.
But I see that you cannot do much without <<import java.awt.*;>>. For example this line which changes the background color:
<<frame.getContentPane().setBackground(Color.red)>>
works only with <<import java.awt.*;>>. I have seen that codes in this and other forums import awt to change the background. Why is that?
After all, I wonder, what can I do;
My question is, can I change the background (and of course do all other things listener, buttons etc) without using <<import java.awt.*;>>.
I would like to avoid using <<import java.awt.*;>> and using awt since my program will not work later.
In addition, I believe there is no point to learn awt, which later will not exist.
I know, I must have misunderstood something. I would appreceate it very much, if anyone could give me even a short answer.

Since swing is a layer on top of awt, AWT will exist for as long as swing does.
If sun does ever remove AWT they will have to replace it something else swing can layer on to and you will probably only have to replace your import statements.
The main difference is the way there drawn to the screen.
You can do custom drawing on swing components but you can't on AWT.
If your using a desktop PC system it's probably best to use swing just in case you wish to do some custom drawing.
awt uses less memory than swing and is faster but swing can be extended. awt comes only as standard.
Say for example you wish to implement a JButton with a ProgressBar below the button text, this can be done with swing!

Long canvas with scroll bar

Hi. I have a form with a very long canvas containing more items than fit on the screen at a time - meaning some items are far down on the canvas and do not appear unless the user physically uses the mouse and scrolls down. This causes a problem for me because as the user tabs through the various fields the cursor will eventually "appear" to disappear. It has not actually disappeared of course, but it has simply navigated to an item that is further down on the canvas out-of-sight. Thus the user must recognize that this has happened and then use the mouse to scroll down and find the cursor again.
Is there a way to automatically coordinate this scrolling so that the cursor always stays in view for the user - meaning that the user will never have to manually scroll down to find the cursor? Or worst case, can I programatically scroll down for the user so that the cursor always remains visible?

Don't do that. That apparently guarantees the problem you have.
The Window size should be no larger than will fit on the user's screen, and the user running the lowest screen resolution should be your target. We create forms no larger than will fit on the 800x600 layout. Our forms always use the Real,Pixel coordinate system, and I create forms with the window size set to a maximum of 784x442. Those reduced numbers allow the form to fit within a browser window in web forms. Our forms run under both 6i Client/Server AND Web, and there is a pre-form that adjusts the web form window size a little larger, but that is all.
Also, when you run your form, that scrollbar you see is there because your window is not maximized. Our forms always maximize the window, and even have a when-window-resized trigger with this:

The wwr trigger ensures the user never sees the Window0 border -- it is useless unless you are running a form with multiple windows, which we never do.
So.... Maximize your Window0, and then you will see the behavior I have been describing. Create a stacked canvas with a vertical scrollbar, and it will behave even better.

Using Report tool with Swing Application

I'd like to use a reporting tool (Crystal Reports or anything else) with Swing application. Could anyone help me?

Stacked canvas with horizontal scrollbar

Hi,
In a forms module I want to show a stacked canvas with a horizontal scrollbar. I have set the generator preference POPHSB on every level to yes, but the stacked canvas is still generated without scrollbar. In the Designer help topic "Generated stacked canvas properties" it is stated that the properties horizontal/vertical scrollbar is derived from the object library. But how can I set in Designer the name of an object library object for a stacked canvas? I don't want to override the object CGSO$CANVAS_POPUP because I also have other stacked canvases that doesn't need scrollbars.

Hi,
This is what I just have found: you must indeed create a new canvas object in the object library and then enter the name of the new canvas object in the property "Placement Template/Library Obj" of the first Module component on that canvas! Apparently, you can change the canvas by means of the first Module Component on that canvas.

Stacked Canvas with one block displaying twice

I have a question regarding the Stacked Canvas. I have to create a calender for clients. (I am using stacked canvas to do that).
In the 'calender' table i would have the information like ClientID, Year, weekno, start date, end date.
So i created two blocks for 'Calender' table in this form. One block for Content canvas with ClientID and Year (Block1). And another block (Block2) on Stacked canvas for weekno, startdate and enddate.(normally there will be 52 weeks sometime 53 weeks)
On the Block1 it suppose to display the ClientID and Year once. And in the block2 (stacked canvas) it suppose to display 53 rows with weekno and the start/end dates.
When i create a new row in the block1 for clientid and year (1234, 2008) then the block2 will be populated with 01-jan-2008 to the 31-dec-2008. But the problem i am having is when i try to save it is trying to save two times one from block1 and once from block2 resulting in a unique constraint error.
how should i structure this so it saves only once?
I tried to keep the clientid and the year in block1 as non-database items and copied those values into the block2, that way it saves correctly but when i try to query on the upper block it gives me error.

But you only have one table. You need two tables for master-detail. Can you normalize the calendar table and change it to two tables (master-detail).

Newbie Help - Tab Canvas with Multiple Pages, Arrow to Navigate between

Hi All,
I am developing my first form. It is a page that requires several pages. I have created a tab canvas and put the pages on (there are 10 pages). When i run the form, i can see the first 4 page headers, and cannot see the other headers. Is there a way to have a arrow at the top so i can click on it to move the display so i can see the other pages?
How would this normally be done? What i am after is a similar multi page navigation to that in the assignment screen, or any oracle screen with several pages.

If i press F2, a list of all of the pages appear, but i do not get any arrows.
I have a single tab canvas with 10 pages on it. The pages fit on the canvas, but not on the display window. Do i need to modify the canvas in any way to get the navigation arrows to display?

Tab canvas with required fields (problem)

hi,
I am using tab canvas with 5 tabs with diff blocks.
receive
issue
adjust
return
view
some fields are required in all tabs.
when i run the form and in RETURN TAB and enter some data and click the save button the cursor goes to receive tab and focus the required fields with a message
FIELD MUST BE ENTER
same for issue tab also...
i dont want to enter any thing there ..
how i manage it

Not sure if I understand you correctly. You say some fields are required in all tabs, but also that you 'don't want to enter anything here'. Do you mean that the fields are required, but only if you're entering data on that specific tab? I.e. you don't have to enter all of the tabs.
If that's the case, are all the tabs based on the same block, or different blocks?

How to fill canvas with lines

Reversing with swing? Help!

Alright, before you guys flip out and say post it to the swing forum, why does the swing forum say read only? Now I have searched the forum but cannot find anything that deals with swing and the kind I am doing. So if you can provide some advice or some help, it would be greatly appreciated. This is my last hurdle to tackle in my school project.
I tried a StringBuffer approach but it kept giving me an error saying it would not work with JTextArea? Maybe the code was wrong?
This needs to take the text on the screen which I have and post it reversed when the "Reverse" button is clicked... I have been searching the web and these forums and all the different reverse methods and theories are confusing me, I try to copy them and get them to work but I just keep receiving errors. What is the best way to do this with using GUI?

Just write a method to reverse the text
read the string in reverse and start plugging the values into a string buffer (inside a loop of course)
then display results:
textfield.setText(stringbuffer.toString());
This is my last hurdle to tackle in my school project.I highly doubt it.
The fact you are asking this question shows me you did not learn anything about Java much less computer science. Your question has nothing to do with swing.

**Urgent**: GO_ITEM to pop-up CANVAS with IMAGE in Sun JRE gives error

Our Forms 10g Environment is this: Forms [32 Bit] Version 10.1.2.0.2 (Production) using Sun JRE i.e. Java Plug-in 1.6.0_06
Problem is that when we try to navigate to a canvas (from a Button) which has an IMAGE ITEM the form is exited. This happens in every form which has a canvas with an image.
i.e. In Button, we have code: Go_Item('block123.button1'). Button1 is also in that pop-up canvas.
Even GO_BLOCK gives the same result.
If the image is in the same canvas as the button which has GO_ITEM code, then it works.
Of course this whole things works fine in JInit. But we need to run in Sun JRE.
Is this a Bug?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sure you can. The earlier poster has said the same thing too. Just that hes made out like this is possible only in jboss. EJB is a distributed component framework and can support multiple types of clients. The client can be a servlet or jsp, another EJB or in your case a swing application. In fact many IDE's allow you to test your EJB called by generating an application client. You need to add a special application client deployment descriptor file ( atleast with weblogic) in order to do this.

Hi, I was wondering how to make a Canvas with clickable URLs. So I have a chatbox, and all messages are drawn on a Canvas, but if people give an URL on the chat, then this URL most be clickable, but I don;t know how to start. Some ideas?

Canvas with theme

I added a canvas with my project theme set to zen.
How can I change the backg of the canvas? I search but there is no file for canvas in the sdk of the theme, what it´s using this object?

1.   Create skinning for all the components in flex using Flash Catalyst 5.5.
